We had a move come up very suddenly. I played phone tag with their office for several days. Turns out, they wanted ME to do my own inventory for estimate purposes...not just furniture items, but numbers of boxes (which I couldn't possibly have done until I was completely packed). The form they wanted filled out was not well organized, and was rife with misspellings. I repeatedly asked that they send someone out to do a proper estimate, which they declined to do. The estimate they finally came back with was the lowest we received, though it seemed that they based it on my incomplete form, rather than the weight estimates, home square footage, number of bedrooms, etc. which I provided. I am sure the actual would have been significantly higher. We were on a very tight budget and needed a binding estimate, which they were unwilling to provide.

Response from J & P Moving Service, Inc.
We did have the pleasure of speaking with this member after she had attempted to fill out our online form and had some difficulty. After a couple brief phone conversations, she faxed us the list of items to be moved. We gave her a ballpark estimate and said we would be happy to come do an in home estimate if the ballpark figure was within her desired budget. She said it was not within her expected budget, so there was no further correspondence from either party.

We had a shockingly bad experience with J and P Moving. In a nutshell, they canceled our out of state move the day we were set to move from Chicago to Florida and refused to make any accommodations. It was entirely their fault, which they eventually acknowledged. We hired JP to move most of our belongings to Florida and keep some boxes and large pieces of furniture in storage for a year. We told them we had 6000-9000 lbs to move, and they quoted us $4400 for 6000 lbs and $.60 for each additional pound. On the morning of the scheduled move, my wife left with our two small children to get a head-start on the 1200 mile drive to our new home. The movers arrived and started labeling and organizing things, and then my wife (while on the road) received a call from Bonnie stating that JP was canceling the move. She stated that they were only equipped to move up to 7000 lbs to Florida, and the movers had estimated that we had over 8000 lbs of possessions. This was a shock, given that all of our conversations had indicated a range of 6000-9000 lbs. We were desperate, given that we needed to clear out our home for a new tenant and get to Florida for a new job starting later that week. We explained to Bonnie that most of the heavier wood furniture and heavy boxes of books etc. were designated for storage, and that we would happily put additional items in storage if necessary to bring the weight under 7000 lbs, but she refused to make any accommodations. She said she was speaking for her boss, Peter, and we demanded to speak to him, but she said he was unavailable. He eventually called a couple of hours later, and he at least seemed embarrassed about the situation, but he was completely unwilling to make up for his own company's mistakes. | |Peter acknowledged that he should have visited our home to make an estimate prior to making a contract for the move. But the fact that JP could not take over 7000 lbs to Florida should not have been an obstacle. We were more than willing to work around that and place more items in storage, in their facility or somewhere else. The worst part about the experience was that they were unwilling to accommodate us at all just because it was going to be more difficult/expensive than they anticipated. But given that the situation was ENTIRELY their fault, they should not have left us high and dry. As a result, our family bore the full brunt of JP's mistake. We were desperate and had to find another company to handle the move at the last minute, which ended up costing twice as much money and an absurd amount of time. The new company took 59 DAYS to get our stuff to Florida. We had to live in an empty house for TWO MONTHS with a 3 yr old and an infant with nothing but the clothes, toys, and air mattresses we had packed in our cars. J and P is to blame because they left us with scarce options. | |And let's make it clear, now that we have an accurate weight calculation from the new moving company, that it would have been extremely easy for us to designate sufficient furniture items for storage and stay under JP's 7000 lbs limit. They just weren't willing to give us a chance. | |While having our huge, stressful, interstate move canceled was awful, I would not trust J and P for even a local move. The movers who showed up (though they themselves were nice enough and not to blame) had not even been told that some items were going into storage, or that we lived in a 4th floor walk-up, despite the fact that Bonnie was REPEATEDLY given this information. Bonnie is incompetent and not to be trusted. Her boss, Peter, is inaccessible and unaccommodating. | |We chose JP over other companies because of their mostly positive reviews on Angie's List. I hope this review will keep others from making the same mistake. UPDATE: In reply to J&P's response, I must state unequivocally that they NEVER told us before the day of the move that they were limited to 7000 pounds, or that there was a limit to what they could store. Perhaps Peter recalls saying this to Bonnie, but no one ever conveyed it to us and it was not written in the contract. We would have insisted on an in-home estimate or gone with another company from the beginning and been saved a lot of trouble. They purport to record their phone conversations and I would invite them to go back and check rather than fabricate an excuse for their horrendous customer service. Any miscommunication was entirely on their end. And we did not have "double" the weight we told them. We always said 6000-9000 pounds. Maybe it was "no-win" for them because they wouldn't have made enough money off of us, but they walked away unscathed while we suffered all of the inconvenience and expense of their blunder. It's understandable that they feel the need to respond to this review, but they really have no excuse. Frankly, it's insulting that they would try to assign blame to us after all they have already done to us.

Response from J & P Moving Service, Inc.
When this member called, they asked for two separate quotes. One quote to store a table, six chairs, and a couple bookcases and another to move 6000 pounds to Florida. We gave them two separate quotes and explained very clearly that we had a truck leaving for Florida, but with only enough room for 7000 pounds at the most, and we would not be able to move anymore than that amount or store any additional items, as we didn't feel good about doing their move peace meal. The movers arrived and they had nearly double the weight they had told us they had(this may or may not have been their fault as they were using weight given to them by another company that may have understated the weight). The only reason we didn't do an in-home estimate is they called with very short notice. We felt we were very upfront about what we would be able to do for them and feel as if it was a "no-win" situation for us, because if we took only half of their belongings they may have claimed we did a poor job and didn't move all their belongings.

The move went well while it was going on. The provider was a little late, but really not a big deal at the end of the day. Two big problems here with me: 1. They asked for a $50 deposit for the day of my move. No problem, I complied. Then the day of the move, the movers and the office said I did not pay the $50. I was told I was incorrect and that I wasn't charged initially. A week later I got a call that in fact they had charged me twice for the $50. I was correct. I received no apology, just a promise the call was reversed. 2. They moved a grill. My husband and I went to use the grill last night-there was a nozzle completely broken off and a gas valve was bent. The grill had been leaking gas and now we need to order replacement parts.
Description of Work: The provider assisted me in moving from my apartment to my home. No major appliances, mostly just furniture and personal tems.

I was so nervous since everything was so fragile, but they did a great job. Nothing was broken, or damaged. they out everything back the way I wanted it. They even picked up a piano for me at a 2nd address as well. The furniture was all wrapped nicely. The movers were very nice, there were about 4 of them. they moved us from Chicago to Georgia. They moved it promptly. It took about all day but it was worth it. They put everything right where I wanted it. The men were great and forgot to bring something for the move, but they assured me none of my clothes or items would get dirty/lost/or damaged, and they kept their word.
Description of Work: They packed and moved 2 rooms or furniture. I had a lot of glass. Tables, dining room tables, a wall unit, a china cabinet, and a regular cabinet in my dining room. There were mirrors and pictures etc. They packed all of those fragile item up for me.

It was raining the day we moved and someone from the office called to see if they could add an extra guy (originally 3 guys were to come out) and left a message with the updated pricing. When I returned the call to inform them that I only wanted 3 guys the truck had already left. I was informed that I would have 4 guys helping and they would keep the same 3 guy quote. I was a little uneasy about that as I was afraid when it came time for me to sign off on the paper work the price would say different. They stuck to their word and we were only charged for 3 guys. They were very quick to load the truck up; they asked questions if they were unsure if something was going or not. When it came time to unload the truck I asked that any boxes that were marked with room location please be put in that room. Having other things needing to be tended to during the move I wasn't paying close attention to where boxes were being put but found that there are a couple of heavy boxes that should have been brought in, were stacked in the garage. While one of the guys was putting a box in the basement he kicked the stair runner off; they informed me and then proceeded to tell me that it wasn't on right in the first place and that's why it came off. Anthony stated at the end of the move for us to call the office and they will have someone come out and fix it. I have called the office and informed them of the situation and was told that they will have someone come out and fix it. I am still waiting and guess that I will be the one that will have to find someone to fix it. Overall, the guys did a good job. UPDATE: After filing a complaint with the BBB, someone stopped by and repaired the damaged caused during the move about a month after the move. Since this really was our only gripe with the move, and while it's unconscionable that it took filing a BBB complaint to compel the company to repair what they broke, I am updating the grades I originally gave because the rest of the move, customer service, pricing etc. were really to our satisfaction and I would hire them again.

So far so good. I wanted as early as possible and even in the rain they made it there at 8. They were polite, efficient and careful. They stayed polite even though I kept adding stuff saying can you take this? It rained the entire time which didn't help matters. The move out is complete now we need to see how the move in goes.

Overall went well. They arrived a bit late due to some employees calling in sick etc... The crew was very accomodating as I closed on a sale and a purchase on the same day. They moved pretty quickly at the house I was selling so that the new owner could conduct a walk thru, went to lunch while I was at the closing of my purchase and arrived at the new house when I did with the key. A couple of pieces of furniture couldn't get up the stairs, while I wanted them to try, they were very cautious and explained that they did not want to damage the furniture or the stairway, which was appreciated. They were fast and efficient, respectful and professional. I'd use them again, and recommend them.

Brian, Justin, and a third guy (sorry I don't remember his name) did an outstanding job! They were very friendly and professional. They made sure to ask where boxes should be placed if we forgot to label them. In addition, they asked us to determined the layout of each room before bringing in the furniture so we wouldn't have to rearrange it later. We plan to use them again for an in house move for heavy workout equipment.

Dan & Dave arrived right on time on the appointed day, introduced themselves, surveyed the job and began the move. They worked nonstop until the move to my daughter's condominium was completed...a good three hours. They took great care to ensure that neither furniture nor walls would be damaged. They dismantled and reassembled the large bed and bunk beds with care and a concern for safety. These movers were obviously professionals, who took pride in their work (and rightly so).

They are wonderful. Their price was very reasonable. They were very attentive, they were on time, they were total gentlemen and helped with everything. I had to move my 85 year old parents and these two old people loved every single one of the guys and they're not easy to get along with. They're very good with some furniture, very quick and they are friendly but they keep moving. I would tell to definitely use them and they're definitely worth it. I recommend them.

They overcharged us and were unprofessional -- however -- of the 3 movers, we felt that Anthony did a good job. Despite our complaints to the moving company, we felt they treated it as just another negotiation, not a serious customer service issue. In return for inadequate compensation, they always tried to get us to sign something that would prevent us from giving them a review on Angies List. We managed to get back $365 from the credit card company and quite frankly, do not have the desire to go through all of the issues we encountered. They were many and I would have much rather paid the extra $365 for professional service.

So I'm really surprised about all the high reviews of this moving company, it's the only reason I chose them in the first place- BIG mistake. We moved from a 2 bedroom condo to a 3 bedroom condo, no appliances and not a lot of major furniture or "things" yet it still took them from 9:30am to 6:00pm to move our stuff, and that includes a 12 minute transport time. The crew was lazy, white trash and unprofessional, possibly their first time on the job. They took their sweet time without any motivation to get the job done, even took multiple breaks throughout the job and stopped at McDonalds for lunch. If they didn't take all day to move, they wouldn't require so many breaks. I had meticulously labeled all the boxes as to which room they would go into, making things more efficient. Instead the dudes ignored the labels and piled everything in the living room, on the opposite end of the house where they were coming in. In order to make room, while pregnant, I had to pick up the boxes and take them to the correct place. All the boxes they unloaded, they put where all our dining room furniture was going, and we kept telling them to stop piling there otherwise there would be no place for the big furniture that was in the back of the truck. At one point they kept piling boxes higher and higher, about 5+feet high until my husband asked if they thought that was a good idea, "I guess not" was their reply. Well come to find out, when unpacking the boxes a day later, I found all my Le Cruset stoneware and cookware smashed into pieces, and those items don't break easy and were meticulously packed in bubble wrap. I submitted a claim shortly thereafter with my complaint of their sloppiness and destruction to my dishes as well as a lamp outside the property. The company came back with $40 for the lamp and said they wouldn't give me anything for the dishes since I packed them myself and apparently don't care about my possessions and would obviously pack them carelessly. I fought that stating we observed them stacking heavy boxes on one another, so they came back saying they'd give us an additional $6. Wow, hope I don't spend it all in one place. For a company that prides themselves on moving and customer service, and even on their website state they take pride in moving delicate belongings, they didn't care at all that items their movers moved were damaged, and that overall I had the worst moving experience I've ever had. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this company to anyone, I'd rather move myself than utilize a poor moving company like this one. Maybe we received a bad crew and were unlucky, however you never know who is going to show up the day you move. It's too bad because there is no shortage of options in moving companies, I truly feel mislead by Angie's list with this one.

I'm sorry to hear that she felt our crew was "white trash", but the crew sent to her home was polite, respectful, and have been on thousands of moving jobs for us and have received countless positive reviews from our customers. The member had packed some plates improperly and they were damaged during the move: not from any mishandling or negligence on our part. We didn't damage any of the hundreds of items handled by our staff, just one box of plates had damage and this would have been avoided if the plates were packed upright and with plenty of packing paper: they were laid flat in a box with only bubble wrap around them, no paper was used and they were laying flat. All plates, bowls, glassware should be packing standing upright. We did offer to pay for the outside fixture that had fallen during the move. We take great pride in doing a good job for all of our customers and make every attempt to resolve any issues fairly and promptly. I'm sorry that she wasn't happy with the settlement offer, but we do offer professional packing services to help our customers avoid situations like this, and we also have helpful moving tips on our website and email tips sent to our customers.

I used Angie's list to find J&P Moving. They provided a good quote, clearly stating what they would do. There was one glitch with the moving date being put down as a month early, but that was quickly resolved and no one showed up on the wrong date. The day of the move, they arrived as expected, carefully wrapped everything. There was one loaded piece of furniture that put on it's side, reshuffling the contents, and the dining room table end broke, but that was not due to rough or inappropriate handling (no claim was filed). Everything was delivered and put in place. The bill was settled without any changes. Overall, it was a good experience. We especially appreciated the use of shrink wrap to keep pieces together and minimize any change of items getting dirty.

It seemed like the perfect storm of moving days... End of the month, weekend, holiday weekend, and end of the summer. J & P charged $120 per hour for a 3 man crew. Other movers were asking $150, $180, and $210 per hour. Before finding J & P I was sure that I was going to end up paying a lot more. Until I found J & P I was considering renting a U-Haul and begging my friends for help. Before the move I boxed as many items as possible. The guys arrived on time. They efficiently loaded and unload the truck. The movers were courteous and responsive to my requests. I highly recommend J & P.

I would NOT recommend this company for a move. They made major mistakes with our move on July 31st 2013 in the Chicago suburbs which caused us considerable inconvenience. Key Issues they got wrong 1) Estimate for the Move: Even though we asked someone to come over and estimate the size of the move based on our four bedroom house. We had their estimator Bonnie come a week prior to the move and she estimated that it could be easily completed with a single truck and a team of four movers. This proved to be totally wrong. The truck they provided was far too small to fit our furniture and the movers needed to make two moves with the small size truck. This caused a delay of at least two hours or so and we were forced to pay for the delay since they charge by hour. We ended up having to pay $ 1,895 for our move versus an estimate of $ 1,500 and the over-age was caused by wasted hours due to poor planning in terms of the truck size and the crew being sent over of four versus six. 2) Items to be moved: We also talked to Bonnie (the person who came to estimate the move) about our flower pots and other questionable items. She said there would be no issue to move it all. After the second load the driver decided not to take anymore items and stated that he would needs to make a third trip due to the small size of the truck they provided. He also stated that he would not take our flower pot because of the ?liability?. He was very obnoxious and unprofessional. After very unpleasant conversation and requesting management on the phone he took a few more items, but then he left without consulting with us. 3) Items Left Behind by Movers: We were left with a full office closet, several items in the garage and area rug! It took us over an hour to load those items into our cars, while the moving truck with the crew was parked in front our new place and taking a cigarette break. 4) Furniture Damages: The crew did not place our furniture in places we requested. They also broke two bedrooms chest?s legs and did not tell us about, they just made it look stable. When we tried to move the furniture to the place we wanted them the furniture just fell apart. Since it is very difficult to fix furniture?s standing legs, the chests are useless now or we need to pay good money to replace completely those legs. We also had several new moving blankets I purchased for our use which they utilized during the move. When I asked the driver for the blankets to be returned, he gave us back old and dirty blankets that they had in the truck instead of our blankets. At this point we were too tired and too distressed to argue about anything. We have moved a lot for last several years and this move was far the worst and was most stressful. Overall we would strongly not recommend this mover. They also suggested that due to the nature of our move ? we not post a reference on Angie?s List.

Response from J & P Moving Service, Inc.
When Bonnie went the the customer's house to do an estimate, she met with the husband. During the estimate she was very specific about unpacked breakables not being able to be transported on the truck and offered to give an estimate to pack these items: he advised her that they planned to move some of the fragile items and smaller things themselves since it was such a close distance. A few days before all moves, we also send a moving instructions and reminder email outlining what we can and cannot take to avoid any miscommunication. All or our local moving trucks are 26', the same size used by every other mover in the industry. We did not assure them that everything would fit on one truck and didn't offer a second truck, advising them that it would be quicker to make two trips since they were moving only a few blocks away(less than a five minute drive). The final balance was within 15% of the original estimate and considering the amount of unpacked items that we anticipated them moving on their own, it was done in a reasonable and efficient manner. We were not aware of any damage to the dresser, but will be happy to have someone come and make a repair.
