The asparagus crowns that I purchased were supposed to be infertile hybrids. After maturing, the crowns turned out to be another variety that produces fruit. I purchased 2 walnut trees from the center. They leafed out the first year, but not the second. When I spoke with the center about the trees not surviving. They said that walnuts are susceptible to death due to cold weather and that because I had not mulched the trees, they were not responsible for the trees dying. I told them that the reason I had not mulched the trees was to avoid mice and voles chewing the tree bark and killing them and that I had planted a third walnut tree from a different garden center the same year and it had survived just fine and had been exposed to the same temperatures. Walnut trees are hardy to zone 4 and should survive here well. If the center seeks out walnut tress that are not hardy for this zone, there is something wrong with their business model. Because the center did not take responsibility for poor nursery stock that they sold and don't seem to be able to properly label other products, I suggest that other garden centers in the area are much better at meeting their customer's needs and being accountable for poor quality stock.
