They were able to do the job that weekend after I had contacted them on a Friday. They installed 3 motion detector lights (each fixture had 2 lights). There was a problem with one and they came out and fixed it promptly. The big, problem was the cost. My son-in-law had gotten 2 other estimates that I was not aware of. I had been working out of town and was back in gown for just a short time. They were also from established companies that provided electrical services. Those 2 quotes were around $900. I was shocked at the price quoted by Mainstream Electric, but as I was in town only for the weekend and needed the security, I agreed. I did complain to the company and they looked at the bill and said it could have been quoted differently and refunded me $300.00.
Description of Work: At very short notice, Mainstream Electric installed 3 sets of motion detector lights for home security.

Thanks for submitting your review I’m sure it’s hard to find time when you spend so much time in Seattle working. At Mainstream Electric we are always striving to provide the best service possible. Contracting is not an easy business. I believe that most companies do their best to give the best price that they can. With that being said there are many reasons why a price can vary from contractor to contractor. Time of year and how busy a company is at a particular time can reflect a difference in price. Some Companies lower their prices in slow times just to keep employees working. I’m glad to say that we are as busy now as we were in December 2013 when we completed your job.( If you know of any drug free, clean cut, hard working electricians please send them our way we are in need of 5 more to get through the summer and fall months.) Not many companies are growing right now but we are. The low bid strategy is another way jobs are estimated. The low price wins and because it was just an estimate if the job doesn’t go smoothly or they missed something in the estimate it’s no problem to ask for more money. Estimates are just guesses. If you didn’t receive a written quote from bidding contractors it’s just a guess! Most contractors use this method because they find it hard to get any work otherwise. Their low price could be temporary and it’s all they have going for them at the time. Here at Mainstream Electric we have made it our practice to give a guaranteed quote for any job that we do up front and in writing. We do this so you know exactly how much the job is going be before any work is started. We stick by our price once the contract is accepted and signed. Our quote is good for 90 days so there is no pressure to have the work done that day but we are prepared to start if that’s what our customer needs and want us to do. It’s up to you. Your project did go well for us and took us less time than we originally thought so we did give a small refund after you called voicing concern that other companies were cheaper. If the project had taken us longer, was more difficult than we originally thought, or you could see that we would lose money on the project would you have offered to pay more? Most people will usually say no and we would not have accepted it even if you offered. We wouldn’t have accepted because we entered into a contract with you and we live up to our promises by doing the right thing. We make no excuses when we make a mistake on a quote or a project we just take care of it. We are not always the cheapest but I am very proud to say that we offer a full benefit package to all of our employees to include health, dental and vision insurance which we pay 100% of the employee’s premium. We also provide paid vacation, paid holidays, and a retirement package with matching. We could probably lower our prices some but I would have to make it off the backs of my employees by taking away their benefits and I’m just not willing to do that. We are in business to stay in business for our amazing employees and continued care of the world’s best existing and future customers. Thanks for your review Todd Damschen, CEO

They were extremely timely, but they were way too expensive. The work was adequate. They refunded $300 after I complained about the price. They reviewed the bill and said it could have been billed differently, hence the refund. They fixed a problem that occurred during installation. My son-in-law had gotten 2 other quotes from electric service providers that I was not aware of (I had been working out of town). Both those companies estimated approximately $900. I came home to Spokane on a Thursday night, called them on Friday, and they were available to do the job on Saturday. I had to go back to Seattle to work on Monday, so even though I was horrified at the cost, I accepted it as I needed the security for my house. There was a problem with one of the installed lights and they came back and fixed it. 10/5/14: having read Todd Dameschen's response, I stand by my account AND respect an employer who treats his employees as he reports. They do deserve it and not enough employers do ( or are able to do) this. All workers deserve health care, sick leave, and vacation, along with a decent wage.

At Mainstream Electric we have a philosophy of one customer at a time. Our technicians will not leave a customer’s home no matter the size of the project until that customer is 100% satisfied. Having to reschedule your project had nothing to do with the size of the job we were doing but rather the fact that we weren’t done with someone else’s project and we did not have any technicians available for the 3:00 appointment that you requested. We are not going to pull off a project just to start another one especially when the we are dealing with homes without any power in the middle of the winter. We feel like this type of business practice leads to sloppy workmanship, callbacks and less than through electrical work. We called as soon as we knew that we needed to reschedule to install a circuit to your dry kiln. In fact you rescheduled for a morning appointment on 01/27/14 but did not call us back to let us know that you needed to cancel because you already had the work completed. We made every attempt to make you happy but to no avail. Here is a copy of our attempted communication with you. 1/20/14 RESCHEDULED 11:01am - offered additional 10% off for inconvenience. Customer said that 01/27/14 is the next day she would be available for morning appointment. Needed check schedule and would call if that did not work. 1/21/14: 717am left message; on # provided to confirm had technician available for afternoon appointment- No Call Back 11/26/14 CSR tried to confirm for morning appointment no answer by customer – No call back 1/27/14: Dispatcher called @ 10:03am with technician headed to customer’s house and customer said they had someone else take care of it- No phone call from customer. I’m thrilled that you we able to have your kiln installed and saddened at the same time that we went able to make you happy. Todd Damschen, CEO

We have an electrical problem that we thought was a fuse. However, the circuit breaker type thing in the wall had some issues and they came in and fixed it. They were quick. It was done quickly. They showed up on time. They did a very professional job. They documented everything and explained to us right well and I was very pleased. I don’t remember how much it cost but it is reasonable. I definitely will use them again.

I was looking for someone to install 4 ceiling fans in our new home. In the past (3 homes) I have installed the fans myself, but I did not have the time due to work and two of the fans needed to go into rooms where there outlets needed to be installed. Being new to the area, I had seen commercials regarding Mainstream Electric, so I gave them a call. I described what I wanted to have done and was hoping to get a basic quote on the phone but Mainstream required an electrician to come to the house. They were also up front that there was a visitation fee that I would have to pay but it would be applied to overall bill if I had them do the work. I was reluctant as I never pay to have someone come to give me a quote, but I figure the money would go toward the bill so it would be fine. I setup an appointment for someone to come to my home. The electrician showed up at our home on time and after spending a few minutes looking at the rooms, he pulled out several ?price books? and wrote up a quote. Having done this before myself and having a father who installed fans for years in CA, I had a ball park idea of what the installation would cost. When I got the quote, I was shocked at the price. The electrician offered to start the work that day, but I let him know I was going to get a couple other bids. I was open to using Mainstream but wanted to check the overall price. My own estimate might be wrong. Turns out I was not wrong. I had another vendor give me a quote, they were able to do it over the phone, did not charge me for the quote and their price was in line with what my expectations were. Overall, the people at Mainstream were professional and courteous. They returned calls when they said they would and they kept appointments. I am sure they would have done a great job. I would only caution anyone who is getting work like this done to get multiple quotes. I was able to get the work done and was able to save over $400. Plus the second vendor did not charge me anything to give me a quote.

Thanks for the review we are always striving to improve our customer’s experience. It looks like you were happy with all aspects of your experience except the price and I’m sure had you went with our company you would have been very pleased with the installation as well. You are absolutely correct that we do charge a onetime dispatch fee but we are also fully prepared to complete the project right then and there. As you mentioned we were up front about this fee and you agreed to the charge. Our profile on Angie’s list also clearly states in the section titled “Free Estimates” NO. The dispatch fee helps defray the cost of fuel, wear and tear on our vehicles, call takers, dispatchers, the pay for the technician (the clock doesn’t stop while they are driving to your home and going over your projects.) and many behind the scene activities that it takes to run a successful electrical service company. I want to address why we cannot give quotes over the phone. The Customer Care Representatives that answer our incoming calls are not electricians and have no way of knowing how much an electrical project should cost. The best way to get an accurate price is to have a licensed electrician look at the project and that’s the way we approach every customers situation. Mainstream Electric also offers Angie’s list Customer 10% off of any completed work which in turn would have saved you approximately $130.00 bringing the total difference to $270.00 I believe that most companies do their best to give the best price that they can. With that being said there are many reasons why a price can vary from contractor to contractor. Time of year and how busy a company is at a particular time can reflect a difference in price. Some Companies lower their prices in slow time just to keep employees working. By looking up the permit for your job I could see that it was completed January 7th 2014. I’m glad to say that we are as busy now as we were in September 2013 when we quoted your job.( If you know of any drug free, clean cut, hard working electricians please send them our way we are in need of 3-5 more to get through the winter months.) I am very proud to say that we offer a full benefit package to all of our employees to include health, dental and vision insurance which we pay 100% of the employee’s premium. We also provide paid vacation, paid holidays, and a retirement package with matching. We could probably lower our prices some but I would have to make it off the backs of my employees by taking away their benefits and I’m just not willing to do that. I’m not sure about other companies’ values but I do know ours. When you hire Mainstream Electric a technician will come to your home to look at your project and you will get a quoted price up front and in writing and only with your approval will we start the work. We guarantee that price because we have personally looked at the job before any work has started. Thanks again for the review Todd Damschen

This company charges $49 just to come out and give an estimate or bid, whether you hire them or not. Giving estimates is part of the cost of doing business. It's a poor business practice to charge a potential customer just to get a bid. I wonder how many of their customers use them, knowing that they are already $49 in to them, so they go ahead and use them anyway. And from what I see from other reviews, they are overpriced. Guess that's how they pay for the TV ads...!

Dear Angie’s List Member, I always find it curious that Angie’s List allows its members to complain about companies whom they have never used … For those reading this review, that is the case here. The member called our office for a service call, and like with every single customer whom calls Mainstream Electric for an appointment, the dispatch fee is disclosed up front … every time. My company is very transparent about the dispatch fee, so there are no surprises. Customers do have a choice, and again in this case, the member decided NOT to use our company … yet he complains of his choice?? And that we were up front?? So that the Member does not have to “wonder how many customers use us despite the dispatch fee” … Mainstream Electric is in its 14th year of business. 65% of our business is repeat and referred business … this statistic alone says that customers are satisfied with my company, my electricians, their workmanship, etc. And, to purposefully sound repetitive … yes, the dispatch fee is disclosed up front, every single time to these repeat and referred clients. The member also states, “And from what I see from other reviews, they are overpriced. Guess that's how they pay for the TV ads...!” I would like to point out a few facts now and talk less to the member’s emotions: -If the member did his research (besides having the dispatch fee disclosed during his phone call with one of our world class Customer Care Representatives), he would have seen that right on Mainstream Electric’s Angie’s List profile it reads “Free Estimates – No.” At the risk of repeating myself yet again, that’s pretty transparent. -Secondly, regarding other reviews on Angie’s List (because the member says, “From what I see from other reviews”) … as of August 20, 2013, there are 37 Angie’s List Reviews. There are 29 A’s; 2 B’s; 3 C’s, and 3 F’s. Simple math shows that of 37 reviews, only 8% weren’t satisfied … none of whom chose to use my company’s services but felt a need to complain anyways. The member is referring to 3 reviews of 37 to make his point. -Finally, after a licensed journeyman electrician is paid his wages for going to a customer’s home and provides an estimate, (plus his paid vacation, paid holidays, plus his full benefits of medical, dental, vision, 3% match to retirement, etc) ... $49 hardly comes close to paying for television advertising. Most would assume that a typical electrician runs this company … that is not the case at Mainstream Electric. I happen to be a Master of Business Administration (an MBA) and I assure you, nothing is for free. Actually, it is poor business to think that free exists. We are passionate and excited about what we do at Mainstream Electric!! In fact, we have a phenomenal team!! Many of our clients do appreciate our No Surprise Protection and choose to use us again and again despite the dispatch fee. Sincerely, Elaine, President

This estimate was so ridiculous that we should not have had to pay their fee to provide it! We just bought a 1908 home that underwent major renovations in 2007. It was built solid as a rock in the old world way. It has up to date wiring except for a few issues, no knob and tube. Our home inspector, who was a general contractor for years, said the repairs would be around $500.00. Below is their exact quote. Work Suggested "OPTION 1: Install a new GFCI outlet on the east side of home. Replace wires to the garage that are damaged at two spots. There are not enough wires the way that it is wired at this time. Provide a ditch from the home to the garage. Install a conduit for the home to the garage with new wires. Install a new sub panel in the garage with a proper ground system and correct breaker sizes for the circuits. Install GFCI's in the garage along with switching for the garage lighting. Provide and install new lights in the upstairs closets (3) Install a new 200 amp service on the outside of the home above the roof for proper height from the deck Install a new 200 amp main breaker panel. The existing one is a GE split bus panel with more circuit installed than allowed. Install bonding and grounding to today's codes Install a whole home surge protector. Replace the existing outlets and switches in the home. Provide and install a new light in the laundry area of the basement with switching. $290 per month or $14190.51 OPTION 2 As mentioned above in option 1 minus: Whole home surge protection Replacement of existing outlets and switches. $240 per month or $11861.07 OPTION 3 As mentioned above in option 1 minus Whole home surge protection Replacement of existing outlets and switches. New power and sub panel to the garage. (Will include deleting the old sub panel and installing a disconnect switch for one circuit with GFCI protection and installing switching for garage lighting.) $182 per month or $9035.96 OPTION 4 Replacement of 7 outlets upstairs. Install 3 customer supplied lights in closets Install 1 customer supplied light for laundry with wiring Correct the sub panel issues in the garage with a disconnect, install GFCI's in the garage and add 2 switches for the lights. $57.00 per month or $2725.94 Work Done Quote out code and safety corrections on home." We contacted another company and the things the Inspector wanted done are going to cost $400.00 to $500.00. The closet lights did not have to be replaced, the Inspector just wanted a shade on them. We have NEVER had such a ridiculous estimate on anything! I had to laugh! If we were idiots, we might just be out over $14000. because someone acts like your home isn't safe. All I can say is good thing I was raised by a dad who was a contractor!! Whew!!!!

For those reading this particular review, I would like to point out that the complaining member was NOT physically present at the service call to which she is referring to. Actually, my electrician informed me that he worked solely with the member’s husband. Clearly there is a gap in what she thinks happened versus what was really communicated during the service call with her husband. Here’s a quote by Sri Aurobindo, “What people call knowledge is the reasoned acceptance of false appearances. Wisdom looks behind the veil and sees.” There really are two sides to every story … the complaining member did not get to hear ours because she was not present at the service call. So, allow me to build “the look behind the veil and see.” The member was provided a punch list by her home inspector; someone who is NOT a licensed journeyman electrician. What is a licensed journeyman electrician??? Corey, in this case, attended a 4-year vocational electrical program (which is not required education by the State of Washington) and worked 8,000 hours of on-the-job training as an apprentice electrician. He is an 01-licensed journeyman electrician in the State of Washington, in which he tested for. Keep in mind, he has since participated in required continuing education classes and works as a journeymen electrician to master and hone his skills to ensure you (and our many other clients) are provided with the absolute best and safest installation possible. Also, my company (and all other electrical companies and electricians in the State of Washington) are held accountable to the safest installation possible by the NEC, the National Electrical Code … a federal governmental agency. In addition, we are held accountable to the safest installation possible by the WAC, the Washington Administrative Code … a state agency. To finally get to my point … how does a home inspector know that your job should cost around $500 when he’s not a licensed journeyman electrician and is not held accountable to the NEC or the WAC? Corey, my electrician whom worked with the member’s husband, is trained to look “behind the veil and see” a bigger picture of a home’s electrical system because of his training and the NEC and the WAC. Corey’s findings were that again and again throughout the entire home, there are unsafe electrical situations that he would have to re-work. Sure, Mainstream Electric could have band-aided what was on the punch list, but once my company works on an electrical system, BY LAW we are required to bring that system “up to code.” In addition, we are required to pull an electrical permit, so the work can be inspected by a state or city electrical inspector. We refuse to take short-cuts on our workmanship, material, permit process, etc. Did the electrician/electrical company whom performed your work pull an electrical permit and have their work inspected? Next I’ll address the member’s comment: “This estimate was so ridiculous that we should not have had to pay their fee to provide it!” The member CALLED US for a service call, and like with every single customer whom calls Mainstream Electric for an appointment, the dispatch fee is disclosed up front … every time. My company is very transparent about the dispatch fee, so there are no surprises. Customers do HAVE A CHOICE, and in this case, the member chose to move forward with the appointment. And now the member is complaining about the choice she and her husband made, after-the-the fact? As for the options that member chose to include in her review of Mainstream Electric, it all goes back to CHOICES. I spoke with Corey again this morning about this service call to absolutely make sure that he did not miss something. Again, he simply stated that he refused to take on the liability of the electrical mis-wirings throughout the house by band-aiding them and refused to have this conversation next to a fire truck. The member’s husband CHOSE not to proceed with the work … HIS CHOICE; and now the member is complaining about that choice, their right to choose?? I will end by addressing the member’s comment, “All I can say is good thing I was raised by a dad who was a contractor!! Whew!!!!” This actually tickles me and makes me laugh because I too was raised by a dad who was a contractor. And, I also say “Whew!!” I say this because it has driven me on my business journey to really understand the business side of my company, as well as instilled a desire to provide an outstanding customer service experience in the contracting world. (Again, the member unfortunately did not get to experience this because she wasn’t there; but her husband did). A simple “No thank you” is what my contractor dad taught me. Even a person-to-person conversation by phone is more productive and respectable than sitting behind a computer and venting about a service call in which the member was not present. While many would think that one’s personal life doesn’t belong in business, I’m going to go ahead and share a bit of myself, a human being … an owner of Mainstream Electric. I had a friend commit suicide this weekend and learned of the news yesterday, the same day I discovered this review. Life events and loss, such as the one I just described, really puts into perspective what is important and what is not. I’ve spent enough time responding to this review. We have had an A+ rating with the BBB for 10 years, and I know my company’s standards and my electricians' standards. I refuse to apologize for them. Sincerely, Elaine, President

In all regards the company was excellent in their communication. During the initial phone call the person I talked to went thru all aspects of what to expect from the visit and cost involved. Additionally, during the visit the technician was very professional and very cordial. I will definitely do business with this company.
Description of Work: The technician from Mainstream came out and took down the information for an estimate for the electrical work on a shop I am constructing.

this company did an absolutely awesome job for me. Their electrician Mike came on time and ran into alot of problems with the wiring in my 100 yr old house. He stayed 6 hours until the work requested + some was done to code and the job was finished. Going way above and beyond what anyone else would have done........He needs a medal !!
Description of Work: the bid was to install a new ceiling fan in the bedroom and install a medallion in the living room where another person had installed a ceiling fan .

It was a negotiable price. They did an outstanding job. In fact, when they came out and bid it, they were ready to work the moment I said go. They were willing to work right then. They gave me a price, and they said what they were going to do. They brought two guys out. The only thing that stopped it was the original price that they quoted me. I told them that I don’t think so. So we basically chatted, and I asked for discounts and continued to ask for discounts, and finally got a discount. They did outstanding for everything. There is a ten-year warranty on their work that includes everything; the wiring and the box. I got a call from them last week asking for their access to come and inspect the work that they did to make sure that it was still okay. They do that one year later, then at the fifth year and at the tenth year. There is no additional charge for the inspection, which is amazing. Electricity doesn’t move other than in the wires; it really isn’t going to do anything. If nothing else, there are going to look and say that everything is okay. Let's say a switch or something isn’t working right, they will fix it. They are really good. I liked talking to the people. I liked the people that came out and did the job. From the moment, they came in here; they cleaned up after themselves, which I was very surprised of. My place was actually cleaner after they left than before they started. We have to drill through 2x4's and things of that nature. When the electrical inspector came in, he said it was Mainstream and that it passed. He just basically gave it a quick glance and said that it's passed. Apparently, he's done a lot of their stuff and feels that they ought to do a great job. They are pricey, but people will have to ask for discounts and challenge them on the price. I told them that if they wanted the work, they should lower the price. I said if not, they were going to go home and leave money on the table. Even my final bid was probably more than what I wanted to spend or pay for, but once the job was done, I was really satisfied with the quality of the work that they did. For that reason alone, they were worth it. Especially if we are short on time or if time is of value to us, they are awesome.
Description of Work: Mainstream Electric put in a sub-panel in my basement and rewired my entire basement.

This company over charges, it is just that simple. This job should have been closer to $200 total including parts. These are some of the questionable items that were charged: $65 for a permit, $49 for a travel fee, $109 to plug the dryer into the new socket, that is no joke, it is writen on the receipt. i would like to know where that $65 permit is, I will follow up with the city today to find out what that money went to. I will never do business with this company, they are over charging, plain and simple.
Description of Work: The plug-in to the clothes dryer needed to be replaced. It is three feet from the box, and a new three foot piece of wire needed to be installed.

Dear (member name removed), Mainstream Electric has no record of doing any work at your residence as listed in your member information; we do have record of performing an electrical service at your father’s home at a completely different address. While I’d normally be happy to respond to a derogatory Angie’s List review, we prefer to converse with the actual client, your father, as you weren't there. ~Sincerely, Elaine, President

This is the third time we have used Mainstream Electric. Unfortunately I forgot to change my gas fireplace gas valves from pilot to on. I thought the switches were the problem. The electrician quickly determined that the issue was the gas valves and not the switches. We were charged $270 which I felt was high given the time spent onsite. I followed up with them and received a follow up call from their management team. The really seemed to care about the situation and our experience. I am happy with the outcome and will continue to use them in the future.
Description of Work: I hired them to fix two gas fireplace switches.

This went really well. Communication was super, everyone I spoke to was nice. I called in the morning and they had a person there in the afternoon and we have a working dryer again! Repairman was very nice and explained things well. Work was efficiently done and I think the price was very fair. We have not used an electrician before in our older home and are quite pleased with this company!
Description of Work: They changed out the power outlet for our dryer and rewired several junction boxes.

I called these guys partly to diagnose a hot water heater problem and partly to switch a ceiling fan from one bedroom to another. They analyzed the hot water heater, and said that the problem wasn't electrical, so they couldn't help with that. But they did an excellent job switching the ceiling fan in one bedroom with a ceiling light from another bedroom. They made the ceiling fan installation so much better than where it had been installed, and it worked beautifully all summer. Everything they did was professional and neat. The price was a bit more than I was expecting to pay, however.
