They were recommended by my builder. Initially the Father/Son trio seemed great. They were local and seemed to really want to earn my business. We worked through the plans and came up with options on components and pricing. When I did a simple google search on the components they were recommending I quickly realized they were way over priced. Then I shopped a local electronics store and even they were way cheaper. Red flags starting going up. They did the wiring and ran everything to a homerun panel. I ran A LOT of wiring and everything is super tight. It is difficult to see what is what. The wires are marked but hard to read and in some cases I simply don't know what the wire goes to because I can't read the writing. I have asked for things promised to me during our contract discussions (like pictures they promised to take of the wiring) but have not been able to live up to their word. I get a "it is not our policy". From a Father and Son operation, really? If I ask them for help they are likely to charge me some ridiculous $70 charge for driving to my house. Not exactly the kind of experience I had hoped for from a small local shop. The remote control (harmony) did not really work for half of my devices. I had to ask them to come out multiple time to fix it. On one occasion they sent me a link to harmony's website implying I just fix it myself. Not exactly a great customer experience. They finally got the remote to work ~85% of the time and that seemed good enough for them and I gave up asking for it to just work correctly. The sub-woofer they sold me arrived defective and I had to wait until the RMA'd a new one. They gave me a "loaner" but it was super frusting. Later in the year I had them install a couple of outdoor speakers in my patio. Literally two speakers, easy access, to the wires that they installed for me. I got a bill that included 2 hours of labor plus a $70 bill for "travel". I don't live in a big town. It can't be more than 20-30 minute drive. In all my interaction with this business the response to my emails is very slow. Some time it takes weeks with me sending multiple emails. The only time I get a quick response is when I owe them money. Quality of work is ok, they will push over priced components (which they are a vendor of), they don't seem to care about making the customer happy and good luck getting them to respond after they take your money.
Description of Work: I had bitsmart do the low voltage wiring (coax, cat6, rj45, speaker) and initial installation of my home theater setup in a new home. This included installing components in a central closet and 7.2 in wall speaker setup and a harmony IR remote to control them. They also installed a pair of outdoor speakers later in the year.

Response from BitSmart Corporation
--"We worked through the plans and came up with options on components and pricing. When I did a simple google search on the components they were recommending I quickly realized they were way over priced. Then I shopped a local electronics store and even they were way cheaper. Red flags starting going up." RESPONSE: Yes we do mark up components to the MSRP level recommended by our wholesaler. This markup covers our time for researching the correct component, paying for the initial cost, shipping, inventorying, and if there is a problem, the cost of debugging the problem, returning the defective item, and reinstalling and configuring the replacement unit. It also covers the time it takes to process the return. If a customer would like to purchase their own components, there will be a charge for time to debug any problems, and installing the replacement. The customer will have to deal with the store he purchased the item from for the return. Many retailers, if a component goes bad after the first 10-30 days, will require the buyer to deal directly with the manufacturer. No manufacturer provides loaners during the return cycle. The markup also helps to offset the costs of system design and quoting. We research and specify the equipment to make sure it will work properly for the application. In this case, we matched the price of an audio component that the customer had found at a local big box store after he had already requested that we order it for him. --"They did the wiring and ran everything to a homerun panel. I ran A LOT of wiring and everything is super tight. It is difficult to see what is what. The wires are marked but hard to read and in some cases I simply don't know what the wire goes to because I can't read the writing." RESPONSE: In this particular installation, all of the low-voltage wiring was run into a small closet with shelves. It was a very tight location and the homeowner would not allow us to place the home-run panel anywhere else in the home. The wiring was marked for our reference, and covered with plastic during the construction of the house. During sheet rock and painting sometimes the plastic will get damaged or removed and the markings on the wiring get painted over. We have methods and tools to trace wiring so we can identify its location. --"I have asked for things promised to me during our contract discussions (like pictures they promised to take of the wiring) but have not been able to live up to their word. I get a "it is not our policy". " RESPONSE: We take pictures for our own reference to help us locate wiring that sometimes is moved or hidden during the sheetrock process. We told the customer that we take pictures for this very purpose. We do not normally give those pictures out to our customers, but the customer is free to take as many pictures as they would like. In this case we did not have a good picture of the exact wire for outdoor speakers the customer was trying to locate himself. We did provide the customer with best picture we had, showing a portion of the wire. The customer then asked us to purchase tools for him so he could locate the wire, because we didn’t have a direct picture of what he needed. Eventually he paid us to locate the wire and install the speakers. --"If I ask them for help they are likely to charge me some ridiculous $70 charge for driving to my house." RESPONSE: We don’t charge for a service call in Eagle, where our shop is located, or for any warranty work that we are responsible for. For most of Boise we charge a service call of $60. This is for a 30 to 40 minute round trip. River Heights, where this customer’s home is located, is actually a 90 minute round trip for which we charge $70. This service call charge helps cover the time and fuel for one or two technicians to travel to the customer’s location. We made many trips to this customer’s home after the completion of his project that would have qualified for a service charge. We only billed him for one service call, for which he hasn’t paid. Almost every company that provides on-site service, charges service calls. For reference Sears charges $85.00 for a service call, on top of their hourly rate. --"The remote control (harmony) did not really work for half of my devices. I had to ask them to come out multiple time to fix it. On one occasion they sent me a link to harmony's website implying I just fix it myself. Not exactly a great customer experience. They finally got the remote to work ~85% of the time and that seemed good enough for them and I gave up asking for it to just work correctly." RESPONSE: We provided the harmony remote to this customer as a loaner free of charge because the customer decided to wait on installing a more robust control system. The customer’s home had some interference issues with the wireless remote control. Unfortunately because of the nature of wireless technology it can be susceptible to interference which requires some troubleshooting. We didn’t bill the customer for any of the multiple trips required to get the remote control running reliably. The website link was for some very easy steps the homeowner could try until our technician arrived to fix the problem. The customer is currently still using the remote we provided for free. --"The sub-woofer they sold me arrived defective and I had to wait until the RMA'd a new one. They gave me a "loaner" but it was super frusting." RESPONSE: Yes it is very frustration when a component is defective. To help our customer we did loan him our show room subwoofer while we waited for the return. This was a courtesy we provided because he purchased the subwoofer from us, and we had one we could loan. Big box retail stores do not provide loaners. Incidentally, we made three trips for this return, for which there was no service charge, because it was covered under our warranty period. --"Later in the year I had them install a couple of outdoor speakers in my patio. Literally two speakers, easy access, to the wires that they installed for me. I got a bill that included 2 hours of labor plus a $70 bill for "travel". I don't live in a big town. It can't be more than 20-30 minute drive" RESPONSE: As we have explained, the $70 charge is a service call for the 90 minute round trip of two technicians to the customer’s home. The speaker wire is the very wire the customer had requested the pictures for, mentioned above. The wire was hidden above a covered patio and required the use of our specialized tools to trace and locate. We installed the customer’s speakers in the covered patio which is fire rated with hardboard and double layers of 5/8” sheetrock. We billed the customer for the actual time spent working on-site. --"In all my interaction with this business the response to my emails is very slow. Some time it takes weeks with me sending multiple emails. The only time I get a quick response is when I owe them money. Quality of work is ok, they will push over priced components (which they are a vendor of), they don't seem to care about making the customer happy and good luck getting them to respond after they take your money." RESPONSE: We regret that our customer was not pleased with the work we preformed for him. We are a small business and try to schedule projects in a timely manner. We have taken his feedback about our responsiveness and are focusing on responding faster. Our reputation is all we have to stand on, and we do take it seriously when someone isn’t happy with our work. Out of curiosity sparked by the customer’s comments, we calculated our response time to all 39 of his e-mails. Our average response time was 4.5 business hours (9:00am to 5:00pm) with the majority of responses occurring within 1 hour or less.
