Chris did an outstanding job. He is very experienced and knowledgable. I am an engineer (but not structural) so consider myself somewhat qualified to comment on his work. Chris took detailed measurements of relative elevations of multiple points with respect to the center of the floor, on both the basement and the first floor. He concluded that there is some small settling occurring, but not something that needs correction at this point. He also took detailed measurements of the deviation from plumb of walls in the basement and determined that the one out-of-plumb wall is as originally constructed, not off plumb due to any shifting of the house. The most valuable outcome of this study is that we now have a detailed quantitative baseline from which we can accurately measure any future settling to determine whether any preventive or corrective measures are required. All the measurements are documented in his report.
Description of Work: Inspect foundation and walls due to cracks in basement floor.

Excellent. He came on time and took his time to tell me his findings as we looked through the house. He has measured the floors and told me that while the house is leaning a more than he would like, it is also a 20+ year old house and hopefully everything has settled by now. He has given me recommendations for fixes and told me to follow up in two years or so to make sure the situation is not worsening. Written report was sent to me via email a few days after. All in all, satisfied with the work!

Great! He was very thorough, professional, and knowledgable. I felt like he gave us an honest evaluation of some issues with our house. He told us exactly what the issues were and how soon we needed to act on them and then gave us a report that I think will be invaluable in the future and if we ever sell. He offered some of his services for the future but I didn't feel like he was trying to "sell" me on anything. He seemed very trustworthy to me which is one of the most important things to me when I consider if I will recommend or use someone again.
Description of Work: We had some concerns about a imperfection in our ceiling and wanted to make sure there was no major structural problems and so Chris came out and did a whole house evaluation.

We really appreciated was how well he explained all of his findings to us in language we could understand. In fact, it was not only informative, but incredibly interesting to learn so much about construction and the materials builders use, and why. We were so relieved to find out that the crack in the foundation is not one to worry about and that our home is structurally sound. During the inspection he examined the walls, doors and windows too. He showed us where the ceiling had been patched due to a leak. He examined all of the joints in the walls and could even tell us what sort of product had been used during construction. He was happy to report that construction is good and no weakness was found. Chris told us what the unlikely signs of any dampness seeping into the crack would look like and recommended how it should be repaired. This was the best $500 dollars we ever spent. We have a signed and stamped report from him to keep on record in the event we should decide to ell our house at some point. We will call upon Chris again when we finish our basement to be sure all goes well. I would recommend Chris to anyone needing an honest, highly skilled and experienced engineer.
Description of Work: We had noticed a crack in the foundation of the townhouse we had just purchased. It had gone unnoticed by t he home inspector. We also had the sensation our house might be sloping down a bit. Chris came and took great care measuring every part of the house with state of the art equipment. It was determined that our home is structurally sound and the crack isn't the kind we need to worry about

Everything went unexpectedly well; We are working on a series of projects around the house interior and exterior; We are at the end; We are currently removing a wall dinning/kitchen and re-sizing the entrance; Having to deal with several contractors over the past several months (several structural engineering companies as well) I could tell that this was the most professional experience of them all. I guess we saved the best for last. I don't usually write reviews, but considering the competition this was so "on the mark" that I couldn't stop myself from writing. The other engineering companies are listed here as well and their professional expertise is probably high(I used several of them in the past), however it is the low quality of the competition's service(lacking punctuality, responsiveness and adequate professional advise) that made me write the review giving accolades to GRUBB. I already recommend it to neighbors that had projects to be done. Great service:)

We wanted an expert opinion on the structural soundness and integrity of our primary residence home before doing some renovations and repairs. Chris was the right person to call. He was on time for our appointment. He was very focused and took as much time as needed to walk around the entire house and property with us, addressing any concerns that we had, while providing valuable information and suggestions each step of his inspection. His knowledge in his field really put our minds at ease before moving forward. We would recommend Chris to anyone needing this type of service. Thanks Chris !!

Chris Grubb came out and reviewed what we wanted to do. He had one helper with him. Then he drew up the details for all the special connections, specified beam sized and joists / truss / column connections. During construction we made a few changes and Chris redid a few calculations and approved the changes. Chris was entirely professional. We communicated by telephone and by email. This was a breeze with his help on an otherwise complicated structural endeavor. We got every penny's worth of value from Chris Grubb. Knowing what I know now would I call him again? In a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Reviewed our proposal to extend our kitchen-dining room out 2' at the second level and then hang a large porch from that cantilever. He also made recommendations to restructure the 14' x 26' porch. He provided the stamped drawings for the building inspector and contractor to use.

Chris Grubb is absolutely terrific! As our renovation project took off, we discovered a structural issue due to a leaky shower pan ? and needed an engineer?s assessment ASAP. He responded immediately and now our project is well underway with a minimal loss in time. He understood out immediate need and managed to squeeze us into his schedule. He is professional and friendly with a great attitude. I would recommend him any time!

He was exactly what I had hoped for, as he was not only very responsive and very thorough, but he didn't downplay the seriousness of the cracks, nor did he overplay it either, once he found the problem. Given my anxiety over the situation, he could easily have suggested all sorts of expensive things to me and I would have gone with it. I very much appreciated that he didn't, and that he was interested in providing the right solution, not the most expensive one. I subsequently had the work (additional footings, including two steel posts) done by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. I now have a more solid house, thanks to Mr Grubb. I would call him again for any structural problem and would rely on his professional advice.
Description of Work: I had ominous cracks appearing near the window and door in one room of my (very old) house, and the floors seemed to be sloping more than they used to. Mr. Grubb performed a complete evaluation of the situation - attic, crawl space, interior - to diagnose the problem, and then made a detailed recommendation for fixing the foundation issues he found.

I?m disappointed that they don?t give you a written printout of the report included in the fee. Charging an extra $100 to simply have in writing what his inspection found is rather over-the-top! I needed the inspection for my own reassurance and not as proof for any home sale or insurance purposes. So, it was not as critical to have anything in writing. But, I like to keep records of everything dealing with my property. The engineer was good at returning my call and setting up an appointment. He arrived on time and took the time to hear my concerns as we walked around the exterior of the house. I have two large trees growing very close to my house and a large root running under the side of my foundation. The root actually lifted up a large concrete slap that was there as a splash guard for the gutter. I was concerned about any possible structural damage done underneath my crawlspace, plumbing or sewer lines. I was considering having it cut down. He spent about 2 hours doing his inspection under my very tight crawlspace, which I describe as a ?belly crawl.? He explained his findings and didn?t find any damage done by the tree root and shared with me that the tree must have a water source under the house since it is growing in that direction. The company should just include the cost of the report in with the inspection fee.

Generally, it takes me one to two hours to write one of these reports. We feel that $100 is a fair charge for our time. Many people prefer to save the money and not receive or pay for the report and this is actually the first time that a subscriber has expressed a negative opinion about it. Thank you for your feedback. We take every critical post into consideration!

Chris was easy to contact and the person scheduling him was courteous. It wasn't a rush so we scheduled a time about 2 weeks away from the time I contacted him. The day we had scheduled him to come he called when he got done with a project earlier than expected but was fine keeping the original time. (I thought this was nice) He showed up in a clean truck with a company logo on it and appropriate attire for doing an evaluation. (polo shirt with his company logo and jeans) He listened carefully and recorded some thoughts in a voice recorder as we went through the issues and proposed solutions. He wrote up plans for all the work we discussed in CAD and emailed them approximately 3 days after we met. I used his plans to install a footer that brought some temporary fixes up to code and it worked really well. If we undertake any more structural changes or improvements to the house we will definitely call Chris to help us figure them out. I feel I got more than my money's worth in getting a professional evaluation and guidance about structural issues in our home.

Grubb Engineering was selected because of the education and relevant experience of Chris Grubb. Throughout working with him for over a year, Chris was consistently professional, responsive, thorough, flexible, and friendly. Chris designed a minimally intrusive inspection procedure, inspected all units, then designed a corrective solution to appropriate units, and finally ensured the work was completed to specification by the contractors of our choosing. Chris was down-to-earth, willing to answer questions, and communicate with multiple contractors, happy to visit the site, and work with homeowners as necessary. I was very pleased with Chris's work, communication, and service through the project, and would strongly recommend him to anyone needing a good structural engineer.

Overall, since we were in a home-buying contingency period, dealing with sellers and realtors was no fun at all. But Chris made the whole process so much easier. He dealt with a lot of slack from both sides of realtors and was completely understanding about it. We felt completely comfrotable letting him handle everything and do the work, because we felt so comfortable with him from the beginning. It was clear he knows what he's doing and is passionate about what he does. As his client, he was on our side the whole time and made us feel very secure about ourwhile still remaining professional and friendly. All in all, I HIGHLY recommend Grubb Engineering Services! You will not be disappointed.
Description of Work: Grubb Enginerring Services did a full structural inspection on a home we were looking to buy. We knew we liked him right from the start; Chris (the owner) was thorough, spent time with us and explained everything so that we could understand it. He was personable, professinal, and trustworthy. After the initial inspection was complete we requested a full report to take back to the seller. The full report was detailed concise and even easy to understand in non-structural engineer terms! We requested that some of the work be done by the seller, which was agreed to, and Chris saw the entire project through from start to finish. I'm really not sure we could've gotten through it without his patience, understanding, and professional attitude through it all. The final product was impecable and we feel very confident that the structure of the house is now completely sturdy.

I am an out-of-towner and had to rely on his integrity to find any issues. Chris was very accommodating with my demands, did a great job and was very helpful in explaining practical consequences of the issues. He did not exaggerate anything and was very courteous. I recommend Chris to anyone looking for non-biased, practical expert opinion in home inspections - including the structural side, which are often not included in the cheaper inspections
Description of Work: We recently bought two houses that were rehabbed and needed a check of the work carried out as well as a check of the house structures. Chris normally only checks the structural aspects of the house but at our request he included an overall quality check of the whole house. We did not require a formal report and he was nice enough to send over an email with photos and explanation of the issues which was fantastic. I know he spent additional time explaining issues with the rehabbers and was professional enough to not raise it in our discussions.
