I was very happy with my finished patio project. Construction Alternatives took my original design and turned it into my dream patio. They were easy to work with, professional and friendly, prompt and cleaned up their mess at the end of each day. The quality of work was excellent, when I was not happy with something we discussed it and they fixed it. They suggested some changes that made the finished project even more beautiful and personal.
Description of Work: Build a custom outdoor covered patio in Craftsman style with stone and wood.

1. HORRIBLE! Home torn up for approx. 21 days - kitchen cupboard contents, bathroom cupboard contents, coat closet contents all over the place. No work done for approx. 12 days they took for Christmas, New Year, & product delays. No work done on Saturdays. Didn't seem to have any concern for us living in the mess, nor did they have any sense of urgency. 2. Didn't ask enough questions--went ahead and did what they "wanted or thought" was OK. We discovered too late that these guys are not what we consider "experienced professionals who know what they're d***." They assured us, in the biginning, they were. Wrong! These jobs were not difficult or highly technical; some we consider to be high school woodshop level. They should ASK if they don't understand something. If they are uncomfortable with a job request, they shouldn't bid on it. 3. They blamed their vendors for delays. That's not the customer's issue. They need to find better, more, or new vendors. 4. Molding around new doors OK. 5. Cleaned up after themselves. 6 Completely failed at planning, material acquisition, structural knowledge & awareness, detail & customer satisfaction. We've had large kitchen and bath remodels done in previous homes. This was the poorest workmanship, time consuming, and overall poorest performance of all projects we've had done, yet the easiest to do. A waste of time and hard-earned money for us. 6. Most work needs to be redone by experienced professional, when we can afford it.
Description of Work: 1. Removed sheetrock at back of existing coat closet running under stairway (to provide additional storage in back). Drywal & fire tape walls, no texture or floor finishing. Demo & drywall good. Bad: did not put back our closet shelf or coat bar. 2. Removed existing seat (like a windowseat) in alcove area. Built coat closet; drywall & texture; install exterior moulding & door, shelf, and coat bar. They had problems getting a door, causing delays. Did not install door knob until we insisted. Eventually done & OK. 3. Install two bath medicine cabinets. Done OK. 4. Remove small shelf built into entry wall. Sheetrock & match to surrounding wall, match floor molding to existing molding. Patch does not match! Sheetrock & texture clearly show where shelf was removed! It will have to be redone by professional. 5. Build and install rolling shelves in kitchen cupboards & bath cupboards. Lots of trouble here. Clearly, they had not done it before. We told them specific materials to use and explained exactly how it should be done. None of the materials requested were used. Shelves do not slide easily; cheap glides were apparently used; some corners of the boxes are not mitered and don't match-up; no sides to keep items from falling out. We made repeated complaints about pull-outs; they made repeated attempts to fix problems. They gave up on one drawer & lef it as is. The charge for it was deducted from payment. Workmanship is poor and unprofessional. And easy job that must be redone by a professional and to our requested specs. 6. Power exhaust fan in attic installed OK. 7. Install door in second story bonus room tor access attic space over garage. They cut the wall from bonus room into the attic BEFORE looking into attic to ensure door would fit and swing IN from bonus room as requested. They saw AFTER cutting the wall that roof trusses kept door from swinging IN. Different door had to be ordered & now HAS to swing INTO bonus room. A HUGE ERROR! No planning, checking, or thought "prior" to cutting the wall out. TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL & a ruined bonus room/attic entry. Did not install door knob until we insisted.

Response from Construction Alternatives LLC
OUR COMPANY IS VERY UPSET ABOUT THIS RATING. WITH EVERY DISPUTE THERE ARE TWO SIDES... HERE IS OUR LINE ITEM REBUTTAL. 1. STAIRWAY CLOSET WAS COMPLETED CORRECTLY AND TO BID SPECIFICATIONS. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CONSULTATION THE HOME OWNER WANTED A NEW STORAGE AREA THE ENTIRE AREA UNDER HIS STAIRS. THERE WAS NO MENTION OF THE CLOSET SHELVING TO GO BACK IN PLACE. TRUTHFULLY IT WOULD BE HANGINGING IN SPACE AND DISRUPT THE AREA. WE DID STATE THAT WE WOULD PUT SHELVING BACK IN, BUT IT WOULD BE A CHANGE ORDER, AS IT WAS NOT IN THE ORIGINAL BID. THE OWNER DECLINED THE OFFER. 2. THE CLOSET DOOR WAS NOT IN STOCK LOCALLY..WE SPENT A LOT OF TIME TRACKING DOWN THE DOOR TO MATCH THE EXISTING DOOR EXACTLY. IT WAS OUR ASSUMPTION THAT THE HOMEOWNER WOULD WANT THE EXACT DOOR, EVEN IF IT TOOK EXTRA TIME. WE ORDERED THE DOOR THE SECOND WE FOUND A MATCH. UNFORTUNATELY THE DOOR WAS ONLY IN STOCK IN UTAH. WE HAD IT SHIPPED IN DURING THE HOLIDAYS WHICH CAUSED DELAYS. WE HAD NO CONTROL OF THIS DELAY, DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE CANNOT CONTROL OUR VENDORS STOCKING, NOR SHIPPING COMPANIES. WE DID NOT PURCHASE A DOOR KNOB BECAUSE WE HAVE FOUND THAT THE HOMEOWNER USUALLY PICKS THIS OUT. WHEN WE SUPPLY THE DOOR KNOBS IN THE PAST THE HOMEOWNER OFTEN WANTS A DIFFERENT ONE AND IT BECOMES A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. WE DID STATE THAT WERE HAPPY TO INSTALL IT ONCE THEY PICKED IT OUT. WHEN THE HOMEOWNER INSISTED WE WENT AGAINST COMPANY POLICY AND PURCHASED ONE. 3.THE BUILT IN SHEETROCK DID HAVE SOME IMPERFECTIONS. WE DID OFFER TO FIX THIS BUT THE HOMEOWNER DECLINED. WE WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY TO SMOOTH OUT THE WALL AND MAKE IT UNNOTICEABLE.. 4. THE ROLL OUT SHELVES WERE A BIT OF A CHALLENGE. WE SPENT SEVERAL EXTRA DAYS TRYING TO SATISFY THE CUSTOMER. IN THE END ALL THE SHELVES WORKED GREAT, EXCEPT ONE... IT HAD A SMALL CATCH TO IT, BUT WAS STILL OPERATIONAL. WE CREDITED MORE THAN WHAT WAS IN THE BID TO SATISFY THE CUSTOMER. AS FOR THE MATERIALS WE WENT BEYOND WHAT WAS ORIGINALLY ASKED FOR. IN THE ORIGINAL CONSULTATION WE AGRRED TO A MELAMINE SHELF BANDED (OFTEN USED IN CABINETS THAT ARE WHITE ON THE INSIDE). AFTER OUR BID WAS SENT THE HOMEOWNER ASKED FOR BIRCH PLYWOOD LAQUERED. I AGREED TO THIS WITH NO UPCHARGE. AN ACT WE NOW REGRET. THE ROLLER GUIDES WER THE BEST QUALITY BALL BEARING STYLE.... EXACTLY WHAT THE HOMEOWNER WANTED. THE TRIM BOARDS AROUND THE PERIMITTER WERE SET ABOVE THE FACE THE SAME AS MOST CABINET SHELVES. THERE WAS NO SPECIFICATION TO HOW HIGH THEY WANTED IT SO WE MATCHED INDUSTRY STANDARDS. THIS MISCOMUNICAATION IS BOTH OF OUR FAULTS. 5. THE ATTIC DOOR WAS A PROBLEM. WHEN WE REMOVED THE PLYWOOD IN THE ATTIC WE NOTICED THAT THE DOOR COULD NOT INSWING DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT WOULD HIT TRUSSES. WE NOTIFIED THE HOMEOWNER INSTANTLY OF THE PROBLEM. AT THAT TIME WE STOPPED THE TASK AND COULD HAVE EASILY PUT THE PLYWOOD BACK ON, CAUSING NO DAMAGE AND CREDITED THE HOMEOWNER BACK THE BID AMOUNT IN FULL. THE NEXT DAY WE DICUSSED THIS AND THE HOMEOWNER STATED THAT HE UNDERSTOOD AND WANTED TO PROCEED. THE DOOR STILL OPERATES GREAT. IT ONLY SWINGS INTO THE UPSTAIRS ROOM INSTEAD OF TOWARDS THE ATTIC SPACE. IF WE WOULD HAVE CAUGHT THE PROBLEM IN THE BEGINNING WE ARE CONFIDENT THE END RESULT WOULD HAVE STILL REMAINED THE SAME. THE WALL WAS NOT CUT OUT UNTIL THE HOMEOWNER WAS APPRISED OF THE SITUATION AND SELECTED TO PROCEED. THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT WE WERE IN CONSTANT COMMUNICATION WITH THE HOMEOWNER. WE ONLY TOOK OFF THREE ADDITIONAL DAYS DUE TO THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY. IT IS UNREASONABLE TO EXPECT THAT WE WORK SATURDAYS. WE HAVE CHILDREN WITHIN THE COMPANY AND BELIEVE IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO BE GOOD PARENTS THAN TO WORK ON THE WEEKENDS. AFTER ALL FIVE LONG DAYS IS ENOUGH. WE WERE AT THE HOMEOWNERS HOUSE A TOTAL OF ELEVEN WORKING DAYS. A FAIR AMOUNT FOR THE AMOUNT OF WORK PERFORMED. WE ALWAYS LEFT THE HOUSE SPOTLESS AND ALL TOOLS REMOVED. THE ONLY REASON WHY IT TOOK SO LONG IS BECAUSE WE WERE WAITING FOR A DOOR, WHICH WAS EXPLAINED EARLIER. KITCHEN AND BATH WAS BACK IN ORDER WITHIN TEN DAYS OF STARTING PROJECT, NOT 21.... IN THE END WE ARE VERY UNHAPPY TO SEE THEIR DISATISFACTION. WE WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND TO MAKE THE HOMEOWNER SATISFIED. IN OUR ELEVEN YEARS OF BUSINESS WE HAVE NEVER COME ACROSS A PERSON SO HARD TO PLEASE AND HAD SUCH HIGH EXPECTATIONS. HOME REMODELS TAKE TIME AND WHEN WE ARE MICRO MANAGED THROUGH OUT THE PROJECT IT ONLY MAKES THE PROGRESS HARDER. WE TRIED TO ACCOMADATE THEIR NEEDS ALL ALONG THE WAY, EVEN IF IT MEANT STOPPING WHAT WE WERE DOING AND CHANGING TASKS. ANYONE IN BUSINESS HAS RUN INTO A CLIENT THAT THEY JUST CANNOT SATISFY NO MATTER HOW HARD THEY TRY. WE ARE TRULLY SORRY THAT YOU ARE UNSATISFIED BUT WE DID OUR BEST AND OFFERED TO REMEDY ANY PROBLEMS YOU SAW.

Construction Alternatives was recommended to us by another approved List company, Capital Landscape. We called Chad Webster, owner of Construction Alternatives, and he came out and we discussed our ideas for an outdoor kitchen. He had great suggestions that saved us money along the way. A few days later Chad called and wanted to stop by with the plans he had drawn up. Once we approved the plans he gave us a detailed quote which was very reasonable. Chad and Mark started work shortly after we gave them the okay. They are amazing craftsman. It was a pleasure having them around. The project took about a month start to finish. We have several other projects we want to have them build for us in the future.
Description of Work: Chad and Mark constructed a 16' x16' outdoor kitchen. The roof on the structure matches our house exactly, both pitch and materials. The counter tops are a concrete material that looks amazing. The structure itself is post and beam construction. Cabinets are knotty pine. The attention to detail is evident through out.
