Very bad refinish . Dust everywhere, scuffed cabinets. Poor product improperly applied. Floors are dryng out and cracking everywhere. A-Max was notified right after work done and they just wanted to charge $1200 more and took no accountability for damage done. I have pay someone else to do over to save the wood

1) Miss represented a finish product to us. They didn't let us know that the product we selected would result in a duller/rougher finish which we did not like. We ended up paying for them to come back and do another coat of the other finish which was more aligned what we expected. 2) end product has many drips and even a noticeable footprint 3) they lost the original deposit check we gave then so we had to cancel the check through our bank 4) its been weeks since the work has been finished and they still have yet to provide us with the contract and warranty information. We suspect it may have been lost with our check, but we are withholding final payment until this information is supplied, otherwise I doubt we'd ever see it.

To start of with they came over, and refinished my floor. It all started when they pushed back the fridge and left a scratch in the floor and tried to fix the spot. It wouldn't have been a big deal, but we had them stain the floor a darker color. So in the process you could see the circle left where they tried to patch the scratch. Also in a few spots you could see where they sanded by the sand paper marks on the floor. Fine. Then within a couple days I noticed white stuff and scratches from the floor. If you took your nail and slid it across the floor the top coat would come right off. They came back out and it was later decided that the top coat had maybe gotten frozen and that's why it happened. So the manager said he would have them come out and redo the floor and would be there to make sure nothing would happen. Since I was no longer sure I even wanted to try the UV again, we opted to do a regular finish. So they come out to do the floor again. The manager acts like hes doing me a huge favor by redoing the floor. (Am I wrong to think they are suppose to come out do your floor ONCE and not have to worry about it again) - Not to have to go thru the whole stinky process again. So they redo it and now I have a streak or line that runs along the walkway by the front door, and what looks like hair or lint that is stuck in the finish that goes all along the edges of the kitchen at least 2 feet wide. There was also an issue of them not filling in gaps in the wood and not covering the nail holes from a repair except with a marker. Telling me they were to close to the end of the wood flooring to do anything about. (Which was maybe only true on 1 or 2 boards. I wasn't going to write a review but it hasn't even been a year and my floors have scratches and dents all over. Its Red Oak, it shouldn't be scratching that bad. Yes, we have dogs but I bought a gate and they haven't even been on the floor. Yes, I have kids, but they are not little kids who play with their toys on the kitchen floor. Good luck with A-MAX. Hopefully your experience is better than mine. I only listed half the issues. The reason I picked them is because all the reviews were good.
Description of Work: I need my kitchen floor refinished. I picked them, not because they were cheaper than everyone else because they weren't, but because they had the UV instant finish.

We had a major water leak occur in our home that resulted in the need to have all new hardwood flooring put in. Our water damage company recommended A-Max Hardwood. Overall A-Max was attentive and did a good job. We went with the Sheyoga Hickory with UV coating. We chose to go out of town during the job as despite the low dust claims, and because the area being redone is our main living area. I am very sensitive to dust, and this was apparent when my family and I returned home to grab changes of clothes and were in the home for 1 hour. I sneezed and coughed for the rest of the evening. I can only image what I would have been like had the sanding process not been dustless. The crew did tape off, and did their best to maintain and contain the dust. Our upstairs and non-hardwood areas were unaffected. From the top to bottom, the staff at A-Max is friendly and helpful. Tysen made up many samples for me as I originally thought I wanted to stay with the same dark wood look in the home with the original flooring. Tysen made time to get the job started early by starting the demolition of our previous flooring. When Eli got the hickory laid out, he called to ensure that I wanted to stain the hickory a dark color. He agreed to let me see the floor before staining, and gave his professional opinion not to stain the floors. I ended up not staining, and grateful I took their advice. The unstained UV-sealed floors, while they show spills more, look amazing and open up my living area. I highly recommend going with a UV-coating. There was zero smell the day after, and many people have commented on how impressed they were that there was no lingering smell. We put back our furniture, and stayed in the home the same day A-Max completed the job. A-Max also gave me a wonderful and safe cleaner for my floors. I have used Method, vinegar-water, and Murphy's Oil soap as a cleaner for my previous floors. Wanting to do the best thing for my floors, I asked A-Max for a recommendation for a good cleaner. It leaves no residue, smell behind, and does not need rinsing. The reason I didn't give A-Max 5 stars are for these reasons. The crew did not do a good job of with the post-job clean. I found staples, and nails on window ledges through out the job site, a food container in another room in my home, leftover hickory wood on my back porch, a some work-related items left behind, and dust on my kitchen countertops. I addressed these issues with Tysen, and was told that the crew was reminded that customers are not their mother who are expected to clean up after them. I hope future customers have a better experience with the A-Max's installation crew's post-job cleaning habits. The second reason, I initially, went with A-Max due to coming under bid against another company, however, the bid was not as clearly lined out as it should have been. There was no "final" amount on the bid, and I took an amount to be the cost, only to find out that that it was a portion of the bid, after the fact. There should be a total bid at the bottom of the form, and the customer should not be required to add up all of the charges to figure out the bid. With these two reasons listed above, I would not let them deter you from using A-Max. A-Max was thorough, had the customer's best interest in mind, and overall did an excellent job.

September 2015 I engaged A_MAX hardwood Floors to refinish my Dining, Kitchen and Entry wood floors. The floors had not been refinished for at least 8 years and were in poor shape. There were many areas where the finish was completely gone and places where they were uneven. The floor had yellowed significantly and need to be completely refinished. I can highly recommend A-MAX for the job they did transformed my worn floors from an eyesore to a thing of beauty at a reasonable price. I have to commend Brad and Jason for a wonderful job their attention to detail was first rate even in the closets where a quality job might no get noticed they did class A work on the edges and transitions. My floors are now flat and smooth and look like new. The dust was held to a minimum throughout the job. Brad and Jason were very professional and accommodating to our needs for access to the house. The floors turned out great and the work was completed in just 2 days. I can highly recommend A-MAX to anyone needing high quality floor refinishing. I would also recommend the UV cured finish as this allows use of the floor the same day. All in all a great job Thanks to A-MAX Thanks fellows Rich Link

It went well at first, however, after sealing the floors, we could see that the new wood didn't match our existing wood. Other professionals were brought in and we have been told by each professional that our existing wood is white oak #2 and they used white oak #1. On our stairs they used select and it doesn't match either. We also had an incident where they let our dog enter the home while the floors were still wet. It took them three attempts to repair the printed area. Despite the fact that our dog was secured in our back yard when we left, and they were the only ones that had access to our home, they tell us they are not responsible for our dog. Apparently they are not responsible for a customers home so I would beware when leaving your home in their possession. They have not accepted responsibility for the mismatched flooring either and when they sent a person out to resolve these issues, he was very unprofessional, mocking my husband and even cursing, which he said was ok as long as he did so under his breath. There are also many areas where holes weren't filled. In the new wood there are several areas where they should have used a different board, instead they would fill large areas with unmatched putty. One area is over 1 foot long. On our stairs, they damaged the wood risers during installation and there are large gouges in the wood. They keep telling us they we were informed that the floors wouldn't match exactly, however this is not a slight mismatch. It's significant. We have been living out of boxes for over a month, knowing that our items will need moved to repair the damage. However there seems to be no reasonable offers to repair our floors. They seem to be much more interested in leaning my house than resolving this issue. They have made the threat many times. I have also attempted to write a review on their website, but it seems that it isn't possible. Guess that's how they keep such good reviews

Brad and Jason just completed refinishing the lovely parquet floors in our historical home near the depot. The original woodwork in the house, including ceiling, floors, and moldings reflect the 'signature' look of a 1930's Hummel design and is truly a stunning feature of this vintage home. Taking a leap of faith based in large part on reviews, we chose A-Max to breathe new life into the floors. And we are thrilled beyond measure with the results! Our floors now look absolutely gorgeous! Where years of wear had left vulnerable patches and dullness to the wood, the refinishing has restored the floors to looking like new again. Brad was able to color match the stain of the original woodwork almost perfectly and the resulting look is simply beautiful. We are very, very pleased with their work and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone - particularly to those with delicate projects. Observations: They were punctual each day, maintained a clean work place, were respectful of our home and pets, and kept us informed of each stage of the process along the way. Only issue of note was with a misunderstanding over the original quote for the cost of the project, which the owner adeptly handled.

A Max Hardwood representative showed up and provided a conscise and thorough estimate and answered and questions that we had about the process and was very friendly and polite. We decided to use A Max for our floor as they are the only proiders that use the UV hardwood sealant, we scheduled the appointment to install the hardwood into our dining room to match our existing kitchen floor. The installers were friendly, answered any questions we had and were very polite. The work was completed over 3 days, each day was about 5 hours of work, except for the last day when they cured, used the UV light to seal the floor, that was only 3 hours. We moved our furniture back in the same day. The instllers cleaned up the mess created each day and asked for when they could arrive each morning. The floor is beautiful and even though you can somewhat tell when the old meets the new it looks like a whole new floor throughout. We are so very happy with the work and how it looks.

Overall the experience was very positive. They worked with our schedule and the results were great. However, having seen negative reviews about dust, I asked if they could do anything to limit the amount. They indicated there would be no dust. due to new vacuums etc. That was unfortunately not true. There was a fair amount of dust everywhere. I would still use them again. I would just cover things better to reduce the mess.

Called and schedualed an estimate for a little after 6:00 waited until 8:00 called and asked whats up? " oh just finished a job ran late." I asked him "what you couldnt call?" His unconcerned response was" No I dont make calls, like I said I just got home. If you dont want to use us I understand." Had no concern that he screwed up my time waiting. And he certainly from the first call did not at all sound like he wamted the business. I found him to be very unprofessional and it was just plain rude and bad business mot to call and appologize for being unable to make it. I could have followed through on other changed plans. This was an unfortunate situation. The bid was missed as indicated and as stated, unprofessional. However, Tyson did call the Oliverius's back upon seeing the notification and missed call. He then proceeded to profusely apologize to Mrs. Oliverius twice, Then tried to explained that a customers house we were working on ran late and the notification for the bid got missed. While these sort of situations rarely happen they are sure to happen at some point in any business. We try our best to not miss an appointment or bid and customer service is our #1 priority. Once again, sorry for the missed appointment.

The results are amazing! We were only out of the house for about 27 hours. The guys came in & visqueen-ed off the book shelves & everything else that they needed to. Minimal dust was left behind. They put 2 coats of Bona Traffic on after sanding. Just hoping now that it holds up to our 5 small dogs and rural (read: dirt & sand) lifestyle. I've already put measures in place to help maintain the finish, like rugs at doorways to catch dirt and we replaced all the felt "coasters" on the bottoms of the chair legs.

Response from A-Max Hardwood Floors Inc
[Member name removed], I am sorry to hear this that a mess was left at your house. I wish you would have called me so we could have remedied the problem as soon as you had the issue. A-Max always makes sure that if the customer is dissatisfied with a part of our work that we fix the problem as soon as possible. A-Max stands behind its work and product 100%. However, this is a great reminder to my employees and me on how far we have come over the last few months. We have instituted a few changes and additions to our routine to make sure customers get the best possible service. Our changes include: 1. 2-3 hour setup time that includes taping off the full house with visqueen and tape. Doorways, hallways, pantry, lights & animal heads get visqueen and the cabinets/doors themselves get tape at/on the openings/seams. 2. A new vacuum setup that collects 98% of the dust from our machines as well as custom fabricated fittings for the smaller machines so that every machine is connected to the vacuum. 3. New machines were bought that are meant for containing dust as well as improving the end product. 4. At the end of the job we spend an hour to two hours with 3 people cleaning the house/workspace with a vacuum, microfibers and swiffers. We go over all surfaces including cabinets, appliances, doors & trim. 5. We also sweep and blow down the outside of the house where we worked while installing/refinishing your house. While I know these things are not helpful to your job that happened many months ago; A-Max has taken the necessary steps to improve our service and without reviews like this we could not see how far we have come. ***To our future customers, if you have an issue please call us, we always pick up the phone and do not run from a potential problem.

Initial work done in Feb. 2013...sloppy results on floor and poor work on baseboards. After a lengthy delay in getting Amax back out to address, baseboards were fixed by a capable subcontractor of Amax. Floor rework was done by Amax Nov. 1. The deficiencies "fixed" by Amax on Nov. 1 are back...gaps between boards, new gaps between boards, etc...We won't call them back as we have gone through the painful Amax experience twice. We'll live with our bad choice of flooring contractor. Andy is very professional and I believe that he is knowledgeable about the trade, but beware, he does not do the work. We were initially happy with the work, and then just weeks later, the inferior finsh work became apparent. We referred a neighbor to Amax, and they also had a negative experience and just don't want to deal with the hassle of moving out for a day or two in hopes that Amax will get it right. |Amax in my experience, was a professional company without an eye for quality workmanship. Andy needs to stay involved after he gains your business and check the work of his employees.
Description of Work: Amax was hired to refinish our floors after water damage. We also asked them to install new baseboards after the owner, Andy stated he was a finish carpenter by trade.

Response from A-Max Hardwood Floors Inc
I am at a great loss of words after reading this review. A-max Hardwood, has bent over backwards to accommodate the busy schedule to address the issues with their floor. Granted, there were issues in the beginning as was stated. The area that had water damage was at 10% moisture when initially checked (which usually is dry enough to sand) but reacted again. It was the Penagos family that wished to hold off on the fix, as they had much going on in their personal lives. Although this review written sounds professional and poised from the Penagos', that certainly was not the case in his e-mail communications with my company. They were horribly personal and threatening when I was not able to accommodate their narrow schedule when they were finally ready. As far as the baseboards are concerned, my Forman did an excellent job putting in the new boards. The job was fine. However, according to the homeowner,"they are not as nice as my neighbors baseboards." Therefore, I hired a sub-contractor to come in and 'fix' what they were not happy with. To address the final resand, we resanded the floor again, paid for the family to stay in a hotel two nights, came back and did a final inspection. There were no gaps when I left. The 'gaps' in their kitchen were as a result of dirt and grime that have worked their way into the void. I explained that the only way to fix this problem is to 'dig out the dirt' and refill the gap. They seemed okay with that explanation.

Our 15 year old maple hardwood floors were in need of refinishing. We referenced Angie's List to help us locate the best company for our needs. After reading many reviews, we received estimates from 2 companies. We chose to go with Andy at A-Max Hardwood as we preferred the explanation of their particular refinishing process and the protective finishes they use. We also felt they were a very professional and reputable company that seemed very concerned about making sure their customers are satisfied, and they were price competitive. We knew this was going to be a very "invasive" and messy, but necessary, process. Because of this, we moved everything out of our rooms that we could and then covered EVERYTHING ELSE (including curtains and carpet) in plastic. You need to do this! Go to Home Depot and spend $20 on a box of painter's plastic and take the time to cover as much as you can. You will be glad you did! As far as the actual floor refinshing, A-Max Hardwood was an A+ company to work with. They were very prompt for all appointments and the job started exactly on schedule. Once Eli and Tyson started on our project, they worked continuously until the job was complete. They were also great about answering any questions or concerns we may have had. The entire process took about 3 1/2 days (but it seems like longer, as you really will not have full access to your house) but was so worth it. The floor turned out absolutely beautiful!! We had a couple of minor issues to address on completion, but they were superb about getting things taken care of very promptly. We would highly recommend this company for your floor refinishing. Thanks again to Eli and Tyson for our beautiful floors......they are a masterpiece!! :)

Later we received a bid for the work...later on he called about doing the job...He was informed all we wanted done was the new sun-room floor...He insisted that we need to Re-do the connecting kitchen and would not installed the hickory flooring in the sun-room and could not lend himself to just that room. We hire another party, Martin Bloom to do the work and he did a great job...Comparing the new sun-room flooring with the connecting kitchen/dinning area shows no real wear difference in the appearance...In other words A-max was hustling us for a larger job and told us he would do as requested. He just couldn't do that. He treated my wife and I like old age morons, talking down to us and implying we did not know what we were doing...we told him we were going to do it our way... My wife is an ex banker CEO and I am a retired Insurance company CEO...I think we know what we want and do not need to have this man tell us we did not, in so many words. The new sun-room looks great and matches the rest of the flooring...

Response from A-Max Hardwood Floors Inc
The interesting thing about this review is that I NEVER did any work for these folks. I came out to Horseshoe Bend to look at the job and explained to them that the IDEAL way to do the work they wanted done was to refinish the old floor where it would join up to the existing wood. THAT IS INDUSTRY STANDARD. I am happy for them that the other company that did the work made it look good. I am sorry that they think I was 'hustling' them. I have not been accused of that before by a prospective client. I am very surprised that they would even go through the effort to write such a review.

The short answer is the service and quality we received from A-max was outstanding. One of the very best experiences I've ever had with a contractor and we've work with many. The quality of their work and their customer service were both phenomenal. We spent a fair amount of time researching companies to do this major floor remodel in our house and ended up with three finalists all of whom came to our house and provided an estimate. All three of these companies we ended up with bids from were well established and reputable and two were closely priced. We were most impressed with Andy because of his professionalism, extensive knowledge of hardwood flooring and his patience with us in adjusting the quote numerous times and even coming back out for a second review of the estimate to clarify some points about the hardwood replacement around our cabinets. His pricing was right in line with our other competitive bid. I particularly appreciated the more detailed estimate he provided and the fact that he was the only contractor who actually got on the phone with wood suppliers and completed the estimate while still at our house I thought was a very positive indication of how his work ethic might be (which turned out to be the true). Our project for us was a pretty big deal because we had to move a large portion of our main floor belongings out, relocate my home office, relocate our pets and we had to be out of the house one of the nights and most of a day. A-max stayed exactly on the project schedule which made life as easy as possible for us during the project. The demo of our existing flooring and the install of the new hardwood went off without a hitch . . . Andy and his crew are extremely professional and efficient. After the hardwood was installed and prior to sanding and finishing we had a question about a few areas and a few requests. For example the maple hardwood we had was very light with few variations, there was a board that was installed in the middle of our largest room which had a darker than normal variation on it. I was hesitating mentioning that and a few areas that we thought squeaked a bit but when I did Andy was immediatley responsive and had no problem replacing those areas which they did literally instantly. After the 3rd finishing coat had been applied there were a couple small areas that we had concerns with. Again, Andy and his crew were more than accommodating and refinished a small area and then sanded and applied a 4th coat to the entire 900 sf. The new hardwood they installed is amazing and it's totally transformed our house. The quality of the hardwood the install and the finish are beyond what we expected. The A-max crew was a pleasure to work with and the quality of their workmanship outstanding. I highly recommend A-max . . . one of two contractors over my life and 5 house construction projects that I can say that about.
Description of Work: Removed existing hardwood and carpet then installed and finished approx 900 sf of new maple hardwood.
