While I heartily agree in theory of going local, I felt it restricted some of my color choices, although I have to say the final outcome was still quite good. I appreciated having a designer on the team. I have every confidence in their honesty.
Description of Work: Remodelled kitchen: The overall look turned out well. However the counter was installed slightly not level so if I had not been there while the appliance co. installed the stove, it would not be level either (think about your eggs being deep on one side of the pan and shallow on the other: they won't cook evenly). So quality B+ to A- (but there's no place to mark that on the web form, and I admit I'm a very picky grader). I was also surprised that they did not give me an itemized price, just an overall price, so it was harder to make decisions about individual items. They used one local contractor for each item (one for counters, another for tile, another for sinks).

The process started with a detailed estimate. They gave me a detailed plan including blue print style schematics of each view and a basic time line and reviewed it with me in depth before I signed the contract and made the down payment They had a decorator that helped me pick out tile and fixtures. She was very patient when I got off track and was indecisive as I tend to be. She had good ideas to help me stay on budget and yet create a nice look. Sometimes the work was not up to par when contracted to outside workers but they always made sure things were fixed. There was an issue found with our plumbing that increased costs. Of course things took longer than planned, don't they always? It took 4 weeks instead of 3 but I didn't think the delays were unreasonable. I am really happy with how my bathroom turned out. I found Red House remodeling staff to be very professional, and I enjoyed working with them.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel. Floor and wall tile removed and replaced, walls gutted and replaced. Shower installed in existing bathtub. Replaced towel and tissue bars. Put in glass block wall. Refinish bathtub. Resurfaced ceiling. I did my own painting.

Pricing was outrageous! For a door we talked about replacing; he quoted us 3.5x the cost of the most expensive model door we could find at Lowe's as the "average" cost. His projection for the whole project was 4x higher than everyone else that has come out. I understand variances in prices based on quality of materials and craftsmanship, but unless he's going to use gold for the whole thing I don't understand how he could give us a quote that high with a straight face. If money is no object, I'm sure he does just as good a job as everyone else in town...

Response from Red House Remodeling
We pride ourselves on always giving people good information, even if it’s not what they want to hear, as it appears was the case with this homeowner. We’ve priced and completed many projects similar to his projects. We told the homeowner that, on average, it’s $3,500 to replace a patio door. Included in this price is a good quality, aluminum-clad wood door plus all installation materials, interior casing, exterior trim, removal and disposal of the existing door and door trim, delivery of the new door, installation of the new door by professional craftsmen, installation of the interior casing and exterior trim, staining or painting of the door and trim, as well as installation and adjustment of a quality lockset. It’s generally not useful to compare the cost of a material found at Lowe’s with the price quoted you by a full service remodeler because there is considerably more to a project, even a simple door replacement, than the material cost. In this case, the homeowner is comparing apples-to-oranges. Regarding the kitchen project, the homeowners wanted an estimate for a project that would result in an aesthetically and functionally unappealing project. We take great pride in our work and sometimes refuse to do things that compromise the end result of a project. We informed the homeowner that we would not be willing to take the shortcuts suggested for various reasons and then provided him a verbal, ballpark estimate for what it would cost to do the project correctly (allowing industry accepted spacing and visually appealing finish work). Therefore, our estimate might not be comparable to those provided by others. Again, an apples-to-oranges comparison. As for the cost of using gold for the whole thing … we’ll have to get back to you on that!

I called to get my bathroom slightly remodeled. I had a budget of about $3000.00. The lady on the phone was very very rude and told me they would not even come out to do an estimate for anything under $6000.00.

We have no record of having spoken with this homeowner. However, if someone from our office did speak with her, and she felt that person was rude, we sincerely apologize. As you can see from our reviews, we pride ourselves on providing a very high level of service and professionalism to our customers. We would never tell anyone that we would not come out to do an estimate for anything under $6,000. We provide free estimates for remodeling projects regardless of size and these estimates are typically provided in-home. Oftentimes, people are calling a list of companies to bid their projects and sometimes people confuse one remodeler with another. (We occasionally receive calls from people who think they’ve talked with us when they’ve actually talked with someone from another company. It happens.) Based upon what the homeowner says she was told, we suspect she may have confused our company with another. If the homeowner would like to have us estimate her project, we would be happy to talk with her about doing so.

I was in the grocery business for well over 40 years and this would be like having a cash register at the entrence to my store and charging people to come in the front door. You have to be kidding me so no I would not use this company.
Description of Work: This provider wanted $750 just to come out and look my project over and then give me a bid. Would take the $750 off my price if I went with his company but would keep the money if not. I would never do business with this type company, I o not care how good they are I just would not do it.

Response from Red House Remodeling
The claim that we wanted $750 just to come out and look his project over and then give him a bid is completely untrue. On April 16, 2013, Red House Remodeling owner Ben Trannel met with the homeowners in their home to discuss their remodeling project, at no cost to them. During that meeting Ben discussed the remodeling project with the homeowners, and provided them with a verbal estimate, again at no cost to the homeowners. He also described our Planning Agreement and fee. The Planning Agreement fee covers unlimited design hours and options, as well as unlimited help with materials selections, by our Project Designer. The design and materials selection are used to arrive at a fixed price for the project and the Planning Agreement fee is credited to the project at contract signing. Three days after the free in-home consultation, on April 19, Ben e-mailed the homeowners a written estimate for their project and once again described the Planning Agreement and fee, which for this project was $750. Five days after that, on April 24, Ben followed up with the homeowners via phone. At that time the homeowners said they were still making a decision about the project. Prior to the homeowners’ free in-home appointment, they also attended a free remodeling seminar at our office where we provided advice about their remodeling project, and explained the Planning Agreement, fee and process, which makes his claim even more puzzling.

I called Red House Remodeling around 5/22 to see if they would be able to paint and patch several walls in preparation for me listing my home for sale. I was on a short timeframe and needed someone fast and who would do a good job. Ben admitted that his team was booked out into the summer but he provided me with the name of a painting service he uses regularly and he recommended I give them a call. The reference was excellent and I decided to use them. I had a truly great experience with them. Though I didn't receive services from Red House Remodeling, I am grateful for the help Ben provided on short notice and also the fact that he recommended a company of such a high quality. Had I not been moving and should I have had a remodel project, I wouldn't hesitate to call Red House Remodeling for their services.

I never caught the handyman's name, but he called to let me know he'd be a few minutes late, which I really appreciated. This was a "small" job and I had trouble finding someone to take care of it until I called Red House Remodeling. The original builder didn't get the thresholds right on the front and side doors. One threshold was totally off and the other was wobbly. A couple of pieces of Hardiplank around the garage doors were crumbling. The handyman was pleasant, competent, and professional and he finished the job early. I am glad Red House Remodeling accepted the job and I wouldn't hesitate to call them for other jobs, large and small.

This experience was fantastic. We have had a couple of pieces of work done on our house, and this was by far the best. Ben brought his designer in, Jenna, who helped us put together a full design from my initial ideas and thoughts. They went through and suggested additional touches and helped us find the most cost effective way to get the look we wanted. Ben and Jenna were then every clear about how long it would take for everything to be delivered after we ordered the cabinetry, and they continued to work with the companies to ensure deliveries were made on time. Ben gave us a schedule in mid January for a one month job, showing which tasks would be completed on each day. His team appeared on time on the first day, and they stuck to the schedule religiously. I would go in every day or so and check on things while they were still here, and they were patient and explained everything to me. By day 2, we had found an issue. Our bathroom window had been leaking for months at least, and the insulation and drywall under the window was completely rotten. The team walked through the damage with me, explained what it would take to fix it, where it would fit into the schedule, and the impact to the overall cost. They were able to fix the damage without pushing the schedule back, and the total change order was less than $1000. Overall, the bathroom was finished on time, on budget, and is beautiful. I would not hesitate to use Red House again. I believe their prices are a bit higher than other vendors, but it's completely worth the money.
Description of Work: Ben and his team remodeled our master bathroom from start to finish. The only thing we kept was one of the two windows and the toilet. They replaced the shower glass, tile on floor, tub deck, and shower walls, vanity, vanity counter, mirrors, lights, and one of the windows.
Everything was planned and work proceeded on schedule.
Description of Work: Complete remodel of master bathroom and partial remodel of guest bathroom. Everything went as planned, with flexibility when certain problems were found. This project involved demolition, electrical, plumbing, painting, painting, dry wall, new lighting, new floor, new tile, new vanities and fixtures.

By the time I called Red House, several other companies had not returned my calls, others had laughed at me when I mentioned how much we wanted to spend and what we wanted done. This was the first time in our 19 years of living here that we were looking to hire someone to remodel our home. We had no idea what things would cost. I called Red House and they returned my call in a very timely manner. Ben scheduled time to come and meet with us. We discussed what we were wanting to spend and he was extremely professional in explaining that our budget really couldn't go as far as we had hoped. While initially disappointed, Ben worked with us and our budget to spend our dollars wisely and where we'd find the most value based on our family's needs and wants. We met with Ben several times to hammer out the details. He was always prompt, and if something came up he'd call ahead and ask if we could meet a bit later. Always professional and always respectful of our time. We also met with Jenna several times to discuss design and/or selections. She too was always prompt, professional and respectful of our time. Prior to starting the project, we met with Ben who laid out a schedule so we knew what to expect each day. Once the project began, we were quite pleased with Bob and the other fellow who did the work. They kept the dust to a minimum, never a mess, and their workmanship was top notch. Bob, who was their most of the time was great! He fit right in with our hectic house of 2 parents, 3 boys and 2 dogs. Trustworthy and personable which made the whole experience such a positive one! Also, if any plans changed, Ben would call and let us know. There weren't any surprises. Today, they finished up, cleaned up and their work is done! We couldn't be happier! Red House accomplished exactly what we wanted in the end! Our kitchen seems brand new. The new peninsula provides the additional countertops/work area, an eating area and that place the family can gather just to talk. Bathroom looks great, too! Red House took the time to truly listen to us so they could understand what we were really wanting to accomplish. Then they set about making that happen on our budget.
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel including removing flooring, countertop, sink, and stove. Provided design, selection and installation of peninsula which added additional countertop space, cabinetry and microwave in a drawer. Making the kitchen much more functional for both cooking and as a gathering and eating place for the family. Installed new countertops, flooring and plumbing. Modified some existing cabinetry around the in the wall oven. Furnished and installed new microwave which is an under the counter microwave oven and free standing induction range. Also installed new trim. Bathroom remodel included removing old cabinetry and flooring, patching the walls, refinishing the bathtub, installing new plumbing fixtures, flooring, cabinets, sink and shower door. Jenna, their designer, provided ideas and designs for the new peninsula. She also provided assistance thought the process with what could have been overwhelming decisions, such as sink styles, cabinets, colors, flooring, counter tops, etc...
Ben Trannel & his staff very very detail oriented from the beginning drawings to completion on time with great detail to accomodations needed for our newly injured & paralyzed son. The craftmanship & work completed is high standard for the price.
Description of Work: Double level 20x20 addition with handicap accessible shower & bathroom, elevator shaft, and handicap access with new doors throughout upper & lower level. New windows in addition, handicap ramp acces to home. New wood floors, carpet, siding in addition.

It was a long process - about 6 weeks - and that is why it was great to have such a professional company working with us. They cared for our home as if it was theirs. We made payments about every two weeks and paid the balance when the project was completed. The estimate process, tear down process, and the replacement (actual work) process went about as well as can be expected when your house is a construction zone for weeks. The communication was great and they were very accesible if questions arose.

The project ended up with a couple add-ons. When installing the new exhaust fan they noted that the vent stopped in the atttic and would be better if it went all the way to the roof. Then when they were on the roof, they noticed a hole near another vent that you could stick your hand through. They rigged up a temporary solution for me to keep out the rain that was coming that night, and scheduled another time within a week when they could come back and do a permanent repair. Each of these extras was about $300. A few minor problems were fixed quickly (e.g. wrong color light fixture). The price felt kind of steep to me, but they worked with me to adjust the plan to fit a budget I could live with. The end result is beautiful and we love it!
Description of Work: Red House completely gutted and remodeled my master bath. Their designer helped me plan and pick out materials for the new design. We discussed options in a face-to-face meeting and then she set up a morning of appointments with various suppliers that they work with to select tile, countertops, lighting, shower doors, and fixtures. Everyone I met through this contractor was very professional and very helpful. Planning took a couple of months from when we first met to when all materials were in and the schedule was mapped out. The project took about 2 weeks once demo started and was thoroughly planned out and predictable.

John was a little late on his first visit, but I figured he either had difficulty finding my house or got caught up in traffic. I gave him the benefit of the doubt because everything else about the experience was great. He worked on a hourly rate for me and worked diligently. I was comfortable having him in my home. He was careful not to let my dog outside when he entered and exited the house, and even carried some packages inside that were delivered to my porch.
Description of Work: John installed a 2" x 1/2" stacked stainless steel tile backsplash in my kitchen, and did an outstanding job. The pattern was a challenging one to install evenly, and John exceeded my expectations. He worked quickly, and did a great job on clean-up. He showed respect for for my property and for me. His problem-solving and communication skills were excellent. He's a clean-cut, responsible family man, and my new permanent handyman.
