After extensive damage was done to our vacation home on Lake Okoboji in Spirit Lake Iowa, a restoration company was called in to due the required demolition work. We then contacted several contractors for a bid to repair the damage that had been done to the kitchen , hardwood floors and adjoining bath. Gene Krueger Construction was one of the companies contcted to do a bid. The company was granted access to the home to view the damage in order to give a bid for the repairs. Shortly after we were contacted by our insurance agent that the owner of Gene Krueger Construction, Mr. Krueger was reporting that during the work he was performing he had discovered additional items that needed to be repaired. We were alarmed because he had not been authorized to do ANY work. The same day in speaking with another contractor who had been called to do a bid we discovered he had not done one, because when he showed up at the house to examine the damage and put together a bid, he was told that Mr. Kruegers company had been hired to do the work. I placed an immediate phone call to Mr Krueger who contended that our insurance agent had authorized the work. Upon speaking with him he confirmed that he had not, that by the time he had been contacted Mr. Krueger had already begun extensive demolition work that we would later discover was not required. Our restoration company confirmed that they had performed all the demolition work necessary. They also told us to beware this company had a done this exact same thing to many previous customers of theirs and later followed with threatening them with mechanics leins on their homes if they did not pay. After we instructed the company verbally and in writing that they were not authorized to do any work, or any further work we recieved a bill for $1295 dollars. An exhorbant ammount for for hauling 9 pieces of cabinetry, and removing 4 sheets of drywall from the home. We made a call to Mr Gene Krueger, that this work was overpriced and the bill was grossly inflated not to mention NOT AUTHORIZED. He then proceeded to send a letter threatening us with a lien if we did not pay the full ammount and would not return our cabinetry. He later proceeded with filing a lien and stating that he had over $100,000 in unpaid work from others people. I think this may be because he fits the crieteria of what is called a "firetruck" chaser in the remodeling world. The refusal to return our cabinets cost us almost 2 months in delay $900 in lost rent, and over $3000 dollars to match and replace the cabinetry, not to mention an additional $800 plus to replace repaint and repair the drywall that was removed without authorization or need. The actions of this company and the owner are truly crooked and border on criminal. This area is fulle of vacation homes with owners that are not local and this individual is obviously out to take advantage of them.
