+ 0 moreI had tried to get several quotes form other businesses and could not even get someone to call me back. I called A1 Fence and they came the next day and provided a quote. Once I accepted the quote they delivered supplies the very next day and completed the job in less than a week. Every single person here working on the fence was very polite and kind. Even the quote process (with the owner Tim) was easy and he was great to talk to!
Description of Work: Built a 6' cedar privacy fence for my back yard.

Description of Work: Sorry for the length. |When I made the appointment it was through the company that takes care of my lawn here in Ankeny. |I advised upfront that I have $750 in gift cards for Home Depot and wanted to use their vinyl privacy fence and need to keep in mind the wind that blows through my back yard. The appointment date was set for Wednesday 3/18. When he came to look at it and he brought A-1 (pretty much to my surprise as I didn't know a 3rd party was coming).. |The A-1 guys and walked around my yard measuring and talking about when they worked for American Fence and they finally grabbed some samples (a post and rail that are still laying on my deck). I figured ok, they can give me an estimate for that product. The estimate was for Kroy (Ply Gem Classic Solid Privacy Fence) Commercial Quality Fence (which amazingly enough is what American Fence sells and shown as the only dealer in Central Iowa). |My current cedar fence line is 380 feet with double and 3 single gates. I had put it in with friends when I was in my 40s and it is now over 15 years old. |I had asked for 400 feet and 1 double and 2 single gates with 2-way key locks. |When the estimate came for $11,500 in vinyl materials alone I balked. After a day to get over the shock and consider how to respond to my lawn guy (he sent me the estimate for them and was to only one I communicated with from that point forward) I advised that bid is a lot more than I expected or am willing to pay. I asked for an itemized estimate and through subsequent emails reiterated my desire to use Home Depot fencing and was finally swayed to Menards which was approximately $5000 and obviously not as thick as a commercial fence (which I never asked for). I also advised that my cousin said he was willing to do the tear-out of the old fence (he has a tractor and low boy) for the family rate of free. |We communicated back and forth until 4/8/15 when my lawn guy said he was out as there was no money in it for him and told me to call Tim @ A1 Fence and his number is 515-865-9993. |Then next day my lawn guy sent another email stating he communicated with Tim @ A1 Fence and they were out too. Having owned a small business for 3-4 years the lack of communication by A-1 to me directly was another red light for me. |From what I can figure my lawn service probably got paid for referrals and A-1 obviously makes their money on selling and installing the fence. The problem was the only time I ever met them and talked to them I wasn't comfortable with them and given they didn't really listen to what I told them -only with my Lawn service guy who I have used on and off several years and has done landscaping for me both with good results, (unfortunately I am a bit less comfortable with him now). |
