Ric was very willing to partner with us to keep the cost down. He was professional, courteous, and pretty prompt (A- on that, but no one is perfect, and we think he has a lot of people competing for his time). He did beautiful work with the wood, including building out an area at the top of the surround where there is a funny little 'shelf' that required some creative thinking. He spent a lot of time determining exactly what we wanted and discussing alternatives. We didn't get an estimate, just went with an hourly agreement, and ended up paying less than we expected. He told us he had spent more time than anticipated with the varnishing--making sure it would be waterproof and that the color matched the existing trim--and that he charged what he thought the job was worth instead of the higher amount it would have been if he had been strict with the hours. We called him several months later for another job, and he was honest about his lack of skill in that area (creating a stone tile shower area for a different bathroom) and suggested someone else. He uses green materials and is concerned about the environment. He did a lot of research for a third potential job before we concluded that what we thought would be easy was really difficult and would be very expensive. He did not charge at all for doing the research. We will call him first for any repair in the future.
