#1 Sun Tanning Salon

When I first started my Club Tan membership #1 Sun had two locations and the Coralville location was so much better; the staff were great, the beds and lights were fully functional on a regular basis, and they had a TV in the waiting room because they were a smaller location so sometimes you had to wait for the bed you wanted for 10-15 minutes. No biggie. But last October they closed that location and all Club Tan members were migrated over to their Iowa City location. In addition to the longer waits for beds, the staff at that location are downright nasty. My husband had a membership for a while at #1 Sun and we often tanned at the same time. We're not model-types or anything but we're not mountain hobbits or something like that. I had gotten done in my bed first and was sitting on a bench in their waiting area when I heard the clink-clink-clink of my husband's keys walking down the hallway leaving his room. One of the staff members at the front desk, not knowing I was his wife, made a nasty comment about his physical appearance quite loudly to another staff member, "Oh, here comes......" They tee-heed about it. Luckily my husband didn't hear it, but I did. They seemed even dense to the fact I, his wife, had heard their commentary; I had locked eyes with the opinion-holder right after she said it. She didn't mind her opinion was loud and proud, and, hurtful. They gave their normal cheery unified, "Thank you!" as we left, one of their few redeeming qualities at that place, even if it is fake. I didn't tell my husband; the comment was something most people would say "ouch" to, and why do that to someone I love? I put off tanning with him until he just gave up wanting to go at all. After paying for months of sporadic membership use, he cancelled his account and I suspended my account while I thought about what I wanted to do. After 2 months I cancelled the account and forfeited the money I had pre-paid for future upgrades to my account. Not once did any staff member question why I was suspending or canceling my account. To be fair, I don't think they really gave a hoot and it showed. Other than the nasty comment about my husband, they were constantly on the phone with their friends while working or leaning against the counter watching TV or making comments loudly about their customers.It's just really unprofessional and quite hurtful when it starts extending to people I care about. On the positive side:They do have quite a selection of different beds to choose from and their hours are really good for most schedules, even on weekends. They always have some type of deal going on like BYGO on tanning packages or a discount on lotions. The location selection is decent and priced from low and affordable to super expensive and probably awesome. It is a well run business model, it's just unfortunate a few immature girls decided to be so shamelessly and deliberately hurtful for absolutely no reason other than to be nasty. It makes me sad.
