These men were polite, considerate, and willing to answer all questions that I had. I offered to let them come into the house while they were waiting due to the extreme cold, and they said no, they "were used to waiting in the truck. don't want to mess up my house." These men were true professionals. The man operating the backhoe could place the bucket precisely and scoop up a load of dirt/asphalt/concrete and dump it into the truck without losing a drop. One man made sure to shovel all of the dirt back into the hole so none was left on the street. They worked quickly and with a practiced hand. McDermott is lucky to have them on staff.
Description of Work: The plumber discovered a broken sewer line in the alley behind my house. City of Dubuque requires a licensed contractor to dig. He recommended a coupld of companies that they typically work with and I chose MCDermott. McDermott came and looked at the site, got locations of all utilities, called me with an estimate (which I accepted) and arranged to perform the work first thing the next morning. When I arrived home from work at 7:15 AM, they were there unloading the backhoe. By 8 AM the crew was cutting up the frozen blacktop and scooping out dirt to a depth of 4'. They tried to locate the sewer pipe and had to keep digging in 2 feet increments until at 12' they finally found the sewer ends. They were seperated by about 1-2 foot. They inserted a metal box into the hole so the sides of the walls would not collapse on the plumber. When the plumber had replaced all of the piping, everyone waited for the city inspector. After approval, they backfilled with some small pea gravel, tamped it down, then some dirt, tamped it down, then some limestone tailings, more tamping. When everything was finished, street repaired, and equipment loaded, the alley was cleaner than before they had arrived.
