+ -1 moreThis was a scam, the vendor did not perform the services, tried to sell us a new furnace, which we did not need, and we were told by the second opinion company that United was notorious for doing this kind of thing. The services were not all performed as expected.
Description of Work: Provider was supposed to check the AC and furnace, they only checked furnace, and found a "critical flaw" that the home inspector didn't find nor was found in any previous service. The "critical flaw" was a leak that would, according to them, cause the furnace to fail, and must be a total replacement. We got a second opinion, the critical flaw had been replaced awhile back, before we had moved in. The AC was never checked

+ -1 moreWe were unable to use the big deal since they didn't want to work on our ac/furnace because of its age (over 20 years old) with dysfunctional parts. So we appreciated that but then when we phoned and emailed to try to get our 99 dollars back since we couldn't use the deal, they played games with us never returning the money. We were finally paid in full back from angle's list who were awesome and very understanding. WIN for angles list LOSE for united heating and cooling

+ -1 moreOnce they finally got a technician to my house it was fine. The service was rescheduled twice from original date. My biggest complaint was they never contacted me to let me know there were delays or issues - both times before they actually came out to the house I sat and waited during the 3 hour window I was scheduled for. At the end of the window I'd call the office & then I'd get an explanation - too much rain, emergency service, too hot, etc. That was super disappointing. Once they finally did arrive (3rd time the appt was scheduled) it was fine. Technician was informative & helpful.
Description of Work: Service purchased was heating & AC tune up. While here, he found a few issues with water heater & humidifier on heater that weren't up to code & repaired those as well same day - which I appreciated!

+ -1 moreIt did not go well, let's just say. We kept emailing through Angie's List website. Made an appt. They called that morning to say they had to reschedule. I rescheduled with company, for Tues of next week. I came home and waited during the 2 hr window they had given. No one showed up, no one called, emailed or texted me. I am now asking for my $39 refund and will pick my own heating/cooling company that I have always used. I am not happy whatsoever, I had to rearrange other commitments to accomodate them to come and do an AC tune up.

+ -1 moreThe repairman showed up early, normally that would be fine but I was told he would call before coming, when he called he was at my front door and I was still at work, I rushed home to meet him. Once I got home he introduced him self and seemed very friendly. He first looked at the unit outside then looked in the basement. He removed the air filter, it had been a while since i had changed it and it was a bit dirty. He then went back outside to check the pressure of the Freon, he claimed it was about 1/4 lbs low and that is why i'm not getting cold air, my personal opinion was it was lack of maintenance on my part because i had failed to change the filter but i am not the professional, he put in the Freon then handed me a bill for over $200, after looking at the bill I noticed he was charging me for the Diagnostic Service Call, that was a coupon I purchased from Angie's List for and handed him before he filled out the bill, he then proceeded to argue with me telling me he always had to charge that, and he could not understand that i had already paid Angie's list for that service. He eventually took that off the bill and left. I noticed about two weeks later, he had never re installed my filter.

+ -1 moreSeasonal service on our furnace- cleaning, replacing a filter for the house humidifier, which is attached to the furnace. The deal we purchased also includes an air conditioner service in the spring, which I cannot review yet. The company missed our first scheduled appointment and a subsequent appointment made to replace the filter. They also failed to return our filter frame, which they took in order to replace the filter itself. When they did come, we were pleased with their apparent knowledge about the furnace and how to keep it operational, as it's pretty old.

+ -1 moreI scheduled the cleaning and tuneup. When the service provider came for that appointment, he noted that the A/C unit was not level which would cause it to wear out faster. He suggested I have him come back and level the unit. He also suggested other things I should do to make the unit run most efficiently. He showed me inside where the wiring is and how dirty it was after just 1 year, indicating why it is important to have it cleaned every year. I've only owned the home 1 year so when Dustin came in the fall to tune up my furnace, and again this time with the A/C, he took the time to educate me on the units so that I could perform appropriate maintenance on them regularly and improve their performance. A couple times when my service was scheduled, United called to re-schedule. Once because the outdoor temperature was too cold, they didn't think they could accurately assess all of the functioning of the unit so wanted to come back when it was warmer. They could have easily cleaned it and told me everything was fine and I wouldn't have known any different. I appreciated their integrity. The other time, because of significant rain, it was too muddy to level the A/C and have it stay level. Again I appreciated that they didn't just do it anyway and then it would sink and become un-level again.

Description of Work: We had United Heating & Air Conditioning came to clean our furance to find out that our furance had a crack in the heat exchanger. It was putting a very high level of C02 in our home. They had to shut down our furance. This was bad timming for us due to me battling cancer. We had different companies come to give us estimates. We also learned that there are alot of different types of furnaces out there. With medical bills coming in and 4 children to care for we didn't know what we were going to do. We prayed to God as to what to do and needed help. United had learned about our situation,contacted my husband & told him they wanted to help us. They installed a furance, and upgraded our air conditioner. They took time to tell me about my new furance, and air conditioner unit. They clean up after the job was done. I can't thank them enough! + -1 morea message while I was phoning. I called him back. He said I would get a $100 rebate but the price of the AC included the Advantage Discount and the discount for buying both. He focused a lot on the quality of his installation, the old furnace being too large, the quotes may not include extra metal, the lowering of the utility bills etc.etc. I told him my complaint was the cost. He offered to service the equipment for a year for free to pacify me. I told him I was not interested. In fact, I wanted to cancel the plan I had for one of my rentals. In addition to the price being too high, I am concerned that the furnace and AC perhaps did not need to be replaced. My Cedar Rapids HVAC person said the new gas value should be about $300. I wonder if the low price service for the AC was for the company to find "guppy" customers like me. I so wish I had gotten other estimates before having him go ahead. I was in a state of shock because I am short of money and felt pressured to make my mind up in a hurry coupled with the cold front. I suppose I will not get any reimbursement but I have satisfaction that the 10 other properties my daughter and I have will not get any money from that company.
Description of Work: On 10/01/2012, a technician from the company came to do a routine furnance check. The check was the result of an Advantage Program signed up for in early summer as a result of a tv commercial offering $39 AC checks. The program offered reduced rate checks for fall and spring and a 10% discount on parts and service. My furnace had been running fine but on that day it was warm enough it hadn't turned on. The technician asked me to turn up the thermostat which I did. Within a few minutes he indicated the gas valve was broken and needed replaced as the furnace would not work without it. He asked how old the furnace was and I said I didn't remember but probably about 15. He said he would call for the part. He indicated they had the part and that the furnace was 22 years old and was twice as big as it should be. He indicated the gas part installed would be about $1800. (Just the week before I had checked with the HVAC person we use in Cedar Rapids for an estimate on a larger home my daughter was making an offer on. He quoted a price of between $1800-2000.) I asked Dustin what a new furnace would cost and he said $3650 for a 95% 60,000 BTU but I would get $410 member discount and a rebate from MId American. He indicated he might not be able to get at it right away as there was a commercial project they were going to have to do. I reluctantly agreed as I was nervous about the cold front forecast for two days later . After a call to the office he said he could get right on it and would have to finish the next day. I felt in a state of shock only to have it intensify when he called me down in a few minutes to show me the AC coils he said were corroding from leaking feon. He said now would be the time to change it out as it would cost a lot more to cut into the metal later. Then he said pershaps the man that was making the new metal could install an access. The next morning when he and the metal worker came he indicated the other man was not in favor of the access. After some discussion, I decided to go with the new unit. He quoted a price but I thought it was the basic price and would have the discount and also a discount for buying both. He indicated on questioning there would be $100 Mid American rebate. Before he left he indicated the office would send me a packet for the rebate I would need to complete. When the packet came it was only for the furnace. I then looked in my file and found the receipt for the old 93% energy efficient furnace which was installed 10/05/2001 for $1895 total. I called the office and asked Lacey about the rebate for the AC,the discount for the Advantage Plan and discount for buying two. She first indicated there would be no rebate and then said she would talk to Dustin and either she or he would get back to me. She indicated he was the owner which was the first I was aware of that. While I was waiting for the call back I randomly called four HVAC providers in Des Moines and asked for ballpark figures for the two appliances of the same size installed. The quotes were between $4895-6300 installed. Dustin left

Description of Work: Our air conditioner just wasn't keeping up with the thermostat readings -- in a new (1 1/2 yr) home!I called United A/C Monday morning; line was busy. The next thing I knew THEY returned my call and came out at 11:00 Tuesday morning. Our furnace/a/c was frozen -- the guys chipped out huge chunks of ice! There was no freeon (sp?) in the a/c unit and they found a number of code violations from the installation of the furnace. They took pictures and will document these violations so we can determine why the City inspector passed the original inspection. The scariest thing was that due to improper installation, we had a carbon monoxide leak!!
