I highly recommend Scott's Home Renewal. I've had them do some repair on dry wall that was the result of plumbing and electrical upgrades. Their work was excellent and they left the site very tidy. It was a pleasure working with this father and son team.

Andy and I took a little time to get connected ,but once we did, everything ran smoothly. He came over, recommended solutions that we better alternatives to what we thought needed to happen, and did an estimate, His estimate was totally reasonable, so we schedules the project. Andy and Roger arrived, worked efficiently, and kept us approved of where they were in the process, keeping our expectations in check. They even installed a small quarter round in my kitchen, which we forgot to ask about during the bid process. I think what impressed me the most was that Andy was not happy about how the patching went i out living room. He was very up front about and fixed it without us having ask. He and Roger were friendly, courteous, and each day the cleaned up after themselves. We will call them the next time we need things done around the house.
Description of Work: We needed to patch a water spot in the ceiling in our living room. We needed to have drywall removed and reinstalled in the basement, and we wanted new carpet on our basement stairs.

As Andy Scott, the front man, says of the cost of their services, they?re higher than some, lower than others. In any case, it?s my opinion that Scott?s gives the best value. They did a vinyl tile installation for me, a floor tear-off and a tricky plaster-patching job ? all absolutely first-rate work. Unlike many other contractors I?ve dealt with, these guys are pleasant, prompt and professional. And they truly mean it when they say they want to make the customer happy. If you?re not satisfied with an aspect of their work, they?ll do what it takes to make things right.
Description of Work: Scott's Home Renewal installed a new tile floor in the kitchen and re-plastered damaged drywall in the stairway. In an upstairs bathroom, they removed a linoleum floor and installed beadboard paneling.

Andy was great to call us as requested, got us a timely quote on the loft, did a great job with the design and build out. Quote came in slightly higher than another contractor, but we went with Andy because he seemed very professional and knowledgeable. THe final price came in slightly under quote, which was also a nice surprise. Great job start to finish. Nothing bad to say about Scott's home renewal.
Description of Work: Andy's crew installed a loft in our new pole barn. They did a GREAT job and we will be using their services again as have things come up. We were coming off a bad experience with the pole barn company (Breezy Hill Pole Barns- stay far away!) and Andy Scott was a pure professional. He arrived when he said they would, cleaned up their mess, were polite and pleasant to deal with always, and came in slightly under the quoted amount. He restored our faith in the construction professionals. Hire this company, you won't be upset you did.

I met with Andy for him to give me ideas on how to replace my existing precast steps. Andy provided several options for me and gave me additional feedback on what else might be necessary such as moving the faucet to prevent it from interfering with the steps and adding another step to prevent such a large step into the house. They were able to complete the job in one day. I suspected that I had a hole behind the precast steps due to some unexpected guests in my house. Scott's took pictures of what they found to show me the "hole". He discovered a rather large area was open between the steps and the crawl space. Andy's team enclosed the space to prevent any further guests and it was all included within the original estimate. I appreciated the photos of the before and after since the steps cover that area and I wouldn't have known what the situation was without them. My very happy with my new steps.
Description of Work: Scott's replaced my precast outside concrete steps with cedar steps and moved the outdoor water faucet.

I would hire Andy to do anything on my home! Not only is he a delightful individual to work with, but his workmanship is top notch. He's very busy so it may take him awhile to get you the quote, but he won't ever commit to something or a time frame fro completing the work that he cannot fully commit to. He's a true professional.
Description of Work: Remove popcorn ceiling texture and paint ceiling. We've also contracted him to remove old stair rails and banister and replace with updated style.

We contacted Scott's Home Renewal in September, with plans to put our home on the market October 1st. We had an extensive list of small projects that we needed to have done to be able compete with this difficult Real Estate Market. Andy Scott got back to us quickly and set up an appointment. He was easy going, adaptable and professional as he made suggestions about how he would get the jobs completed. We received a very reasonable bid within a couple of days. One of the reasons we chose Andy was that he worked to fit us into his schedule, so we knew we could meet our deadline. Andy and his team were awesome to have in our home. My 14 year old home schooler mentioned, that the workmen were easy to be around. That is really important, if you our planning to be home when different workmen our showing up at your home. All of his workmen were professional and trustworthy. We were personally introduced to everyone working on our home. Andy always communicated with us about when they would be arriving and the approximate time that they would be leaving. They worked expeditiously to get the work done. As in any project, our home presented problems that we had not anticipated, but Andy and his team found solutions to fix the issues and completed the jobs in the time frame that they had committed to. All of the work they did was outstanding. We would highly recommend them to friends and family.

I called early on Monday and left a message. I received a return call on Monday eve. He was busy on Tues. but would contact on Wed. to come look at my project. It is now 2 weeks later and I am still waiting. I notice other reviews about slow timing and I agree.
Description of Work: Several areas of damaged drywall to be repaired and replaced. Move some electrical and duct. Wire a couple electrical switches in basement. Rebuild a wall. Re-rock another wall and texture all. Restructure clothes dryer vent, floor tile to repair, lay new tile in another area. Several other handyman projects of similar scope. Also have new carpet to install in great room and bedroom.

Andy and his crew (2) came over and started the work after three weeks. The thought was to allow the ceiling to dry out. I was OK with that, but it ended up as more of an excuse, regarding ongoing delays in completing the project in my opinion. Start to finish was approx 7 weeks..much to long. The quality of the work was above average. Andy and his crew are pleasant and go right to work. I believe Andy gets to many jobs going at onetime. He juggles his time between jobs, depending on who complains the most.,,"squeaky wheel gets the grease" so to speak. Overall, I'm pleased with the eventual outcome. My only suggestion is to get in writing a start and finish time-line. Andy is not the best time manager. I will use him again, but with the understanding that there is a start and finish date. No excuses.
Description of Work: I had a leak in one of my upstairs bathrooms, which damaged the family room ceiling below. All of the costs were covered by my insurance company State Farm. A word to the wise. Make sure you review your insurance coverage. I did, and I was coved for water leaks I contacted Andy Scott's Home renewal, after reviewing a number of companies on Angie's List. I chose Andy, based on these reviews. Andy was prompt to get back to me after, I called him. He came over right away, and tore out the old ceiling to allow it to dry. He called a Royal Plumbing and has them come out and fix the leak. I decided to have the old shower replaced with a 'new" updated shower and fixtures. There was some tear out work involved to fit the "new" shower in place. I was OK with the estimate and agreed to have the work performed, as outlined in our agreement.

When I first contacted Andy, I could tell he was very personable. He listened to what kind of work we were looking for and scheduled a time to come and take a look. We showed him all of the things we wanted done and he said he would work up a quote for us. The quote came to us later than he said but he was apologetic and courteous. The quote contained almost everything we had discussed with a few minor exceptions. I was sure to mention the misses and he added them quickly. We decided to proceed with the work and told him up front that communication was very important to us as we never wanted to be surprised about when they would or wouldn't be working. We would often communicate via telephone but it was nice that he was also open to texts. I must say Andy did a very good job of keeping me updated about when they would work and during what time of day. We have a dog and it was always important for us to know in advance when they would be working so we could put her in the basement. He did just that and we never encountered any issues. As far as the work site, Andy's team did a nice job of keeping everything clean and back to normal at the end of each day. We had had drywall work done prior by another individual and it was always a disaster with piles of dust but not Andy's team! There were only traces of drywall dust after days when they would sand so we were very pleased. I also appreciated his attention to detail and ability to make minor changes throughout the work. We had a baseboard that didn't turn out as dark as we had wanted with the stain. He was more than willing to re-stain it and re-install it so we were happy with it - which he did. Overall we were very happy with the work performed by Scott's Home Renewal. They were professional, timely, respectful and easy to work with. I would definitely recommend their services and will use them again if needed in the future.
Description of Work: Drywall Repair (Some areas due to prior roof leaks)*Plaster repair patch on wall and small area of ceiling in our entryway. Andy's team put some kind of netting into the patch to strengthen the plaster repair, sealed it and smoothed out the finish. It looks better now than before the damage occurred!*Wall opening in bedroom closet that needed to be sealed in with drywall. Andy's team installed drywall over this opening and patched/sanded it in until smooth. We also have another small dent that they patched. You can't even tell these areas were patched!*Drywall repair in kitchen - parts of ceiling and around a pass through. This was where the majority of work occurred. Andy's team patched several areas with new drywall - a small spot on the kitchen ceiling as well as both sides of a pass through. This involved a lot of corners and and tricky angles. They also re-textured the entire ceiling in the kitchen to be sure the surface looked consistent. The suggestion of texturing the ceiling was a great idea. It's as if nothing had ever been damaged. We were also quite pleased with the drywall repair work - very smooth and well done for so many corners, etc. Threshold Work/Wood Work*2 custom oak transitions (interior thresholds) were made, installed, stained and clear coated. This looks great! I can't believe we waited this long to have something made. Andy listened to what we wanted and made it happen!*Ready-made exterior threshold installed. Patched in new sub-floors directly in front of the door where water had damaged/rotted the wood. Re-stretched carpet.*Custom oak (plywood) bar counter made, installed (with hidden brackets), stained and clear coated. This is our favorite part of the work. Andy's team created a bar counter for us between a kitchen pass through and another room. We feel this space is now maximized and a great addition to the kitchen.

Andy did the initial bid for all the work at my mother's house. He also gave the bid for work at our house.Everything went very well! Andy and his subs have worked together a long time. They are trustworthy and professional. My husband and I felt the work was well done and the price was reasonable.
Description of Work: Andy Scott was the contractor for painting and repairs to my mother's large ranch home. He subcontracted with Mawdsley Home Improvement for the painting (which was great! - see their review on 7/9/2012) He repaired the ceiling in my mother's garage. He also brought in a sub- Justin-to replace linoleum flooring in my mother's laundry room for $490 with a beautiful remnant-a great savings to us. Justin was very professional. He called when he was delayed, and did a super job of laying the flooring. Andy also did some repair work on the siding at our home. We had replaced some windows in the front of the house and discoveredthat the old windows (Shelter) had leaked and destroyed the wood underneath the siding. Andy was finishing up work at my mother's house and was very fortunately able to do the repair work the next week. Andy and Roger and another worker replaced the wood, the siding, trim, caulked and painted the area for $1490. We appreciated his willingness to help us out so quickly.

They came out to look at our room and they gave us a very competitive/fair bid the same day. The bid also included all the supplies and clean up. The next day, they delivered all the drywall, within the next 3 days they hung, taped, mudded and sanded the drywall. They textured on the 4th day and completely cleaned the job site. They did a very professional job, especially around all the windows, the cathedral ceiling and the texturing was done perfectly.
Description of Work: We were extremely impressed with Scott's Home Renewal. We contacted them to drywall our newly built 3 season room, they were very prompt in giving us a bid and they were able to start the job immediately. Their crew is very hardworking and professional. We were impressed how organized they were. We will definately use them again and refer them to all our friends.

Andy Scott was GREAT! His service was prompt (even though he had to squeeze me into his schedule) and friendly. He contacted me shortly after returning from Memorial Day vacation (good for him!). We arranged a meeting to discuss and review the work. He promptly gave me an estimate for the proposed work. I accepted his proposal and we arranged a time for him to do the work (despite his full schedule, Andy got me in quickly). I arranged to have someone at my home to assist Andy in answering any questions or helping to move furniture the day of the project. Andy repaired a 1' x 5' hole in the ceiling, textured the ceiling and newly finished drywall walls, repaired a tape joint in the master bedroom ceiling and textured the ceiling, repaired some nail pops for me (this was above and beyond the quote), removed some newly installed siding, blackjacked some flashing, reinstalled the siding, replaced other siding, caulked new siding, and then painted. I would highly recommend Andy to any of my friends.

We made a mistake in not asking when to expect the project to be done.(do this). We wanted to start the last week in April and it got started the 2nd week in May and was completed on June 8th. The work itself was good. The speed was not so fast. They seemed to have a lot of other projects keeping them away. I understand that this was a small job by comparison to what they probably work on, but it dragged on and on. 2-4 hours for putting up studs on one day. basic electric was down in one day. Drywall put up in a few hours. Mudding drywall 3 days from start to finish(including dry time), paint and doors 2 days, carpet 1 day. It took a month for a 12x12 room with no demo, or duct work. On multiple occasions was told that they would be here on a certain day and then they weren't. Completed room was delayed over a week due to carpet not being delivered on time. Andy is a nice guy and the work done was very good, but we felt like we were a last priority and they seemed disorganized with time management. Find an alternative for your floor with a hard deadline or be prepared to wait a week as it seems they only use one partner for floors. The estimate given was exactly what it cost which is great, the final product we are happy with. The time it took to complete was not good.

We initially contacted Andy for a ballpark bid on a family room renovation so we could make a good decision about the breadth of our remodel. Andy understood we would be getting comparison bids and was professional and helpful. Because one major part of the contruction involved creating built-in bookcases, Andy met his cabinetry sub-contractor at our home to address questions and make an accurate bid. When discussing changes to walls, Andy was able to listen to our ideas and provide his professional opinion tactfully. (Also subsontracted was some lighting work) Andy, Roger and Alex changed three walls and the ceiling in this room which was previously all stucco. They rebuilt one wall with new drywall and skimmed over the other walls and ceiling. I had not heard of (and was unsure of) the skimming process and held my breath. It looks great and we are very pleased with the new look. This team was friendly, punctual and clean. Andy was thorough in addressing every aspect of this renovation.
Description of Work: Our renovation was in our main living area which we call our family room. It involved covering or removing three stucco walls, updating lighting and building/installing bookcases and mantle.

We had a half height wall between the kitchen and the stairway leading to the basement that we wanted to make a full height wall in order to create additional space for new cabinets in the future-one side involved putting up scaffolding on the stairway. We also had a wall that partially separated the kitchen and dining room removed so we could make the kitchen more open to the dining room. Andy came and looked the project over on January 5, and had a bid to me that weekend. As he was looking over the project he made a suggestion that, while I was planning the project, I hadn't even thought about, but it improved the project significantly. After I reviewed the bid we scheduled the project for January 23-24. Andy advised they would be arriving about 8:00 AM (we live a fair distance outside of town). Andy and his crew arrived almost to the minute of 8:00 AM. We spent a few minutes reviewing what was to be done, and he and his team dug in. They had everything done and ready to be textured by 2:00 that first day, but couldn't go further because the drywall compound needed to dry overnight. The next day they arrived early, again dug in and wrapped it up by 11:00. The entire team was very professional, very courteous, and very customer oriented. It's not often that I can't find a single thing to complain about, but working with Andy was one of those few times. The new wall looks perfect and blends perfectly with the existing walls. The area where they removed the wall they took great pains to make sure the ceiling texture matched up, and it did. It was absolutely dead on, and I defy anyone to see where they patched it in. In the future, any time I need work done that I can't or don't want to handle myself I will call Andy first, and probably no one else.
Description of Work: We had a half wall that was extended to the ceiling, and a wall that was removed. There were outlets added to the wall that was build, and the new wall, as well as the area where the old wall was removed were finished and textured.

We are LOVING our kitchen! Even after the first day, we were impressed with the care and detail in Scott's work. The patches were beautifully done. This was my husband's first time installing drywall, and we were nervous about the taping, mudding and texturing. Scott's came in an worked with what we had done, adding support where necessary. They finished off the work beyond our expectations. They did a great job of containing the drywall dust and cleaning up after they were done. We consider this quite a feat since our kitchen is open to all of our first-floor living areas. Andy reminded us that his company performs all kinds of remodeling services, so we will definitely be keeping them in mind as we work throughout the house to bring it into the current century!
Description of Work: We're performing an "iterative" kitchen remodel and were ready for drywall. We had wiring completed and needed to patch the ceiling and walls. My husband installed the drywall. Andy performed the estimate personally. We have executive knock-down texture on our ceiling, and Andy suggested that he skim and texture the entire ceiling because patches would be noticeable. We left the option open, but Andy, his father, Roger, and his friend, Alex did such beautiful work that you can only tell that the patches are there because we KNOW they are there. :) They arrived early on Monday morning and patched holes in the wall that were revealed when we removed a large cabinet that had housed a wall oven/microwave that we removed. We replaced it with a slide-in dual-fuel range and OTR microwave. We had also installed a new water line behind the refrigerator, and they patched that area as well. Andy returned on Wednesday morning to apply another coat on the walls and then everyone was back that afternoon to sand.

They did an amazing job and cleaned up everything. I will be using them again when I remodel the kitchen and for some touch ups on my garage.
Description of Work: Due to the flooding of 2009 my basement walls were removed due to mold issues. Scott and his crew came and removed what was left of the old walls and put in new walls and added a wall to the back wall that as concrete. They finished out the windows and hung new drywall and mud and taped and textured the walls.

Andy and his helpers came to my home this afternoon and repaired a couple of pieces of vinyl siding that had separated from my windows. They were prompt, came at the time agreed, and fixed the siding quickly. Sometimes I've wondered about the effectiveness of "Angie's List" in a small market like Des Moines, but clearly it works -- it's bringing contractors like Andy to the top of the list, just as it should. I would highly recommend Andy Scott Home Repair.

It is rare to find a contractor that a family can trust implicitly to come into their home and do any type of work.. They do their work as promised. They do a tremendous job, they follow up, and they are very contentious about everything they do. Our home is nearly 100 years old, and we cannot trust just anybody to do work in this home. Andy and his team are the only people we've found who know how to navigate the unique needs of such an old home, and I'm confident that you'll feel the same way if you hire them to do any project in your home---large or small. Finally, I can't help but think that some of the negative reviews represent an aberration, and probably say more about the person doing the review than the company being reviewed. Some people aren't going to be happy, no matter what. So, despite what a couple nay-sayers have said, I can say without hesitation that Scott's Home Renewal is the best in the business, and we will call them over and over again to do work around our home. Everybody in our home, including my wife, our two young kids, and our dog, love to have Andy and his guys come into our home. After completing several projects for us, we view them as a member of our family.
Description of Work: We have used Scott's Home Renewal a number of times in the past, and have always been more than impressed with their quality of work, price and timeliness. This summer when we needed a gazebo built for a special project, I turned to Scott's, and, from start to finish, this project was conducted with the utmost of professionalism and workmanship, and when they finished on schedule, the project exceeded our expectations and was completed at a price below that which I had expected to spend. As always, we couldn't be happier with their work. In addition to trusting Scott's implicitly to work in our home, I have never hired a contractor that has been as easy to work with as Andy and his team. We'd trust them with the key to our home, we'd trust them with our kids around the house, and we plan on hiring them again and again. You should do the same.
