Schaal Heating and Cooling

First, Schaal really needs to add "plumbing" to their catchy commercial jingle because whenever I'd tell someone who I'd called to come and fix my leaky toilet they'd say "They do plumbing too?" Yes, they do. Second, I have to mention Deb, who answered the phone when I called to schedule my appointment, has to be one of the best customer-service people I've dealt with. She was extremely friendly and helpful, so compliments to her. The reason for my call was a toilet leaking into my basement when flushed. Also had the valve replaced as it sprayed water when flushed. Plumber arrived on time (a bit early even), explained what was possible that he might uncover (my house was built in 1940 so I knew other problems could be uncovered) and got the work completed in under an hour. Luckily he didn't uncover anything more than the basics - wax ring replacement, flapper/valve replacement. The price for the work done seemed reasonable I suppose, but that's one of those things I'm never sure of. When your toilet is leaking into your basement you don't want to get a bunch of estimates, you just want it fixed so you get the first people available out. Overall completely satisfied with the work and would certainly use Schaal again in the future.

Technician arrived on time, was knowledgable, worked efficiently and was congenial. I am quite pleased

He changed the capacitors outside and inside. Didn't show me the invoice. Didn't make sure the air conditioning would run for a short period of time

I contacted Schaal through Angie’s List Monday morning. By Monday afternoon I visited with Jeff Backous of Schaal and by Tuesday morning Todd and Michael were here installing the system. All 3 Schaal employees are stellar: outstanding work ethic and very professional. They walked me through all of the decision making and the bells and whistles of the project. I made a great choice to use Schaal.

The technician spent nearly two hours cleaning and servicing our air conditioner. We had a Groupon for this, reducing the price considerably, but the technician gave us the same level of service he would have if we had paid full price. He explained everything he did and advised us on the condition of our system, showing us where parts were failing. Because of the age of our AC and furnace, we elected to replace them and are now comparing installers and systems. We met with a sales rep from Schaal the very next morning to discuss Carrier equipment. Still in the evaluation process, but we would feel comfortable buying a new furnace and AC from Schaal.

They were very good. One person came out to complete the service. It took less than an hour to complete.

They were great. They did the work quickly, competently, and did so on time and explained everything they did. The workers were superlative.

In short, the tech from Schaal's who came out to troubleshoot / repair my A/C unit. He instead totaled it out without doing a single thing, besides removing the cover of the unit. Lets just say Schaal's is in the business of selling you a new one instead of fixing the one you have. I suppose there's more money in for them. And the sale they're trying to make will likely be 125% over the market price if you're not careful. My A/C unit stopped working while I was out of town. I contacted Schaal's to repair the unit and they were prompt in getting someone over to the house. I was called by the tech to notify me that he was on the way. About an hour later, he contacted me by phone to report the bad news, my 12 year old A/C unit's repair costs were nearly as much as a total replacement. The tech described it as a catastrophic failure that is very uncommon. I was told the compressor and the fan motor were shot, which were caused by a short in the wiring. The total repair estimate came to $3,600. In speaking with the tech by phone, I came to the conclusion that I'd have to replace the unit. He offered to have someone from his company come out and quote me when I returned home. I agreed to that and paid him $73 for the diagnostic check. A few days later, an owner of the company came out and quoted me on a new furnace and a/c unit. I told him I'd be shopping for estimates and would like his most competitive offer. He basically came down $2000 off of his "book price" if I agreed to a year service contract for $150. So that was kind of sketchy. I thanked him and he went on his way. The next company I called came out and started to prepare a quote. He asked what was wrong with the unit and thought it was strange that 2 systems had failed. He offered to send a tech out and take a look that same day. When the tech arrived he observed the wiring harness was fried. As it turns out he noticed a few other things. The rep from Schaal's did absolutely no troubleshooting whatsoever on the unit. He didn't splice the wiring to test if it was eve getting power. He also didn't reset the breaker that was tripped from the initial short circuit. Because of these things, there was no way to know if the fan motor or the compressor had failed like he said they had. The 2nd company replaced the wiring harness for $175 and it has worked great ever since.

$200 in repairs, and no improved performance.

Technician was very thorough and checked the entire system. He made recommendations additional service and modifications to setup of our equipment. Very pleased and will use again.

Overall it went well. We needed to get our furnace checked out before it got too cold out and saw the Angie's List Coupon and thought "why not?" The technician came and in did their thing. Turns out our water heater was a hazard and they had to shut it off. Long story short, we had no water heater until HSA Home Warranty kicked in. It was an inconvenience, but we appreciated their promptness to tell us about our defective water heater. We ended up getting the water heater from another company that was partnered with our home warranty. It would have costed us $1200 to get a whole new one through Schaal. In the end, I would have them back again to check on our AC/Furnace. Very professional and was on time. Thanks Schaal!

All went well with the furnace and water heater install. I was set up for Schaal to complete the install of the air conditioner, took the afternoon off from work only to get home and have Schaal call and say they set up a maintenance appt. not an install so I had to reschedule. I then again had to take another afternoon off for the install; little irritated that I had to waste vacation time do to their mix up. Furnace and water heater work great and with the weather starting to warm up I look forward to seeing how the air conditioner works. I also hope to see a difference in my utility bill.

It worked out just fine. They were very kind, knowledgeable, seemed to know what they were doing and spent a little extra time with us even though we didn't pay any extra. They came out on time.

They are great. They were professional and cleaned up. They explained the process for the geothermal. They had sags that did the digging. The people they hired were professional and knowledgeable. Their price was comparable to other bids i got.

Asked for a quote on whole house dehumidifier. They sent tech out to visit. Tech and I discussed what I was looking for, we discussed different size options. I informed the Tech I wanted a specific size. The tech told me a price and said to call him if I wanted to schedule. I asked "is there a formal quote or proposal I need"? Tech said no, just call him when ready. The following week I called and asked for a quote that detailed the product and work. Took a couple calls to get this, then when I got it there was no detail, basically just "all parts and labor to install whole house dehumidifier". Another call asking to add the detail I requested, another email with same thing. Then called supervisor, SUP said he'd get it taken care of, then another email from the tech with same thing. Called the SUP back told him exactly what I wanted on the quote. Finally got what I wanted and turns out the quote was for the size smaller than what I asked for, and if I wanted what we discussed, and what I told them I wanted it would be an additional $800. Why would they add the next size up and a price to this quote if they didn't know that's what I wanted in the first palce? I felt this whole process was deceptive sales at best. Based on reviews they must do good work, but make sure you get a detailed quote and know what you are getting for your money.

They came to house, sold us on a great unit, but never got us the quote, despite two phone calls no one ever got back to us.

Couldn't be happier. They were prompt on email communication. Matched a competitor price. Arriving for the estimate and then later for the installation was on time and professional. Overall, great experience.

Our original air conditioning system was not properly cooling or heating the upper level of our house. Schaals recommended a new unit and discovered shoddy duct work. After correcting the duct work and installing the new unit the difference has been amazing. They were always punctual and very patient showing us how to set the thermostat etc. It was a pleasure dealing with them.

THEIR BRAND, SAME PARTS AS "CARRIER" WAS TOLD BUT CHEAPER............THEY CAME BACK AND HELPED PROGRAM THERMOSTAT.........CLEANED UP AND HAULED ALL OLD PARTS AWAY....HAPPY OVERALL

I researched Schaal on Angies List before contacting them. After verifying that they had good reviews I contacted Schaal for repair on our GeoThermal air conditioning unit. I called them at 9:30 this morning and they arrived at 11:00 am. It took them 45 minutes to diagnose and fix the issue. We had a clogged water drainage line in the Geothermal system...nothing too serious. I was very satisfied with the service I received and will call them again if I have further issues.

Called when unit died on a Monday, had new unit next day. Quick response and no high-pressure sales.
