My home - and garage door - is 10 years old. Each year my garage door would give problems operating / sticking / "bouncing" in the cold winter. I would have to UP the Up and Down Force settings on my opener motor so it would not stop. This summer, my door is giving me problems in the heat. - Time for a tune-up. After inspection, I was told that my rollers in the track were plastic, and it might work better if they had metal ball bearings, but it wouldn't help my door being "heavy" when it's near the top. So I declined the $99 extra to replace these. I was told that after 10 years my torsion springs were "getting old" and were "sagging" because they were losing their strength. And it would be $299 or more to replace them. I declined. When I was told my door was pushing too hard to get it down past the 3-foot mark, it doesn't make sense to me that the springs are weak. I would think that my door would be heavy and want to go down too fast. He tightened my springs instead, for no additional cost. I questioned why to tighten them if I had a problem with the door going down past the 3-foot mark. After he tightened them, the visible "sag" was still there. He said it wasn't going away - that only a new set of springs would be tight and straight-across without sag. Several things just didn't add up. I'm half expecting to have my door fail to go down again here in the next week, because I just don't buy into the story he was telling me. He was a nice guy and gave a good explanation on everything, but one explanation for one area didn't match up logically with his explanation with another area. I don't know if I was told the truth, and just don't understand really the dynamics of how a door works, but I think it's pretty straight-forward: If it doesn't go down, either the spring is too tight, keeping it up....or something is sticking, making it try to force past the resisting area. If a door can't lift (not my current issue), either the spring is too weak to help lift, or there's something too tight causing it to stick. It can't really be much more complicated than that. He also suggested that my motor "was getting wore-out" from "working so hard" with these door issues over the years, and I was quoted $400+ to $800 for a new motor. I declined. I grade a level "C" on Quality and Professionalism because what I was told just didn't add-up for me. I was offered a $50 charge to add an attachment plate to the center of my door where it attaches to the lifter. There was a small crack at this spot. If this gets worse, I will make sure it is reinforced with a steel plate. But I can produce one for cheaper than $50 parts expense. I understand it's part of how a service company makes money, but that's pretty high compared with the next item... I was offered a $99 charge to replace all the rollers. (about $8 each?) I was offered a $299+ charge to replace springs I was offered a $400+ charge to replace the motor. I grew up on a farm and know how to fix a variety of heavy machinery on a constant basis. I can fix things myself, but I have my own firm here in the city related to agribusiness, so I hire out for fix-it jobs. I've never experienced an electric motor just "get tired" from use and lose strength. An electric motor works strong until it's dead. A spring can get weak with age and use, but it can be tightened and gain most of that strength back. I've seen garage door springs last 45 years before they break. BANG!! Everything just didn't pass the Nose test. Something is fishy.

Response from Hicklin Door Services
Thank you for your feedback. The fact is your garage door is ten years old which is a very common age at which garage doors start having issues such as the issues you are having. Most doors start having issues far sooner then this. From what you decribed the technitian explained to you in great detail of what you needed fixed in order for your door to work properly and you declined because your opinion was that it did not need fixed. I guess that raises the question for me as to why you elected to use our services to repair your garage door that you originally felt was not working properly then not let us actually fix what was wrong with it? Our technitians are trained and experienced to not only fix what is an urgent repair but also recommend things that will be a problem in the near future. Of course what is actually repaired is entirely your choice. Which in your case nothing was repaired and you declined everything that was recommended. So I guess it would be safe to say you will continue to have the same issues as before with your door. I understand you grew up on a farm and feel you are a very handy person. We have two technitians that also grew up on farms and we hired them for that very reason. Great work ethic, honest and hardworking. The fact is even though they were very handy they still needed almost two solid months of training to learn our trade. With that said being handy in many areas does not mean your an expert in all fields. I'm assuming that is why you elected to have us out to look at your door instead of fixing it yourself? This would also explain why the adjustments you wanted us to do did not fix your problem. Our technitian only performed the adjustments you recommended because he was being curteous to your opinions and because you declined to have the problems fixed properly. Making adjustments to something that needs replaced will not solve your issue entirely. It will save you money in the short term which I'm assuming was your ultimate goal and In some cases it will make it last for a short period of time but overall it still will need replaced. I feel it is important to note that springs do not last 45 years even though you stated yours did in the past. The only way this would even be possible is if the door was never used. I've been in the garage door business over 17 years and can tell you this is the most common repair we do. On average a spring will last between 4 to 7 years depending on how much the door is used. In some cases I've seen them last 10 years but this is only due to the door not being used very much. Obviously the more you use the door the more wear and tear it goes through. Most home owners these days use the garage door as the front door which contributes to the springs wearing out far before the 10 year period. If springs lasted 45 years I can assure you we would not be in business nor would any other garage door business. Although I appreciate your opinions and taking the time to share your experience I completely disagree with them. Based on my 17 years of actual garage door experience and what you decribed the technitian told you I can assure you the recommendations the technitian gave you to fix them were accurate and you will simply continue to have issues with your garage door becuase you declined to fix them properly.

Purchased the $60 garage door tune up hoping that they could fix the problem i'd been having. Our garage door was going down almost all the way then turning around and going back up. The Representative arrived early in the given window, assessed that there was a problem with the motor itself as it was over 20 years old. They provided a quote and my wife let them know she would want to talk to me first but I was tied up in meetings at the time. They graciously went on to another job and said they would come back after we had decided what to do. I called the rep and he went over my options, we made our choice and they were back and had the install complete within a couple hours. Very fast and Very professional! I would highly recommend them. The only reason i didn't give all As was because I felt that the opener was somewhat overpriced but we needed it done quickly and they were super fast!

I could not get the garage door open this morning and my wife had a mid day appointment. I called Hicklin at 9:30am and was told someone would be there between 10 and 12 today. At 10:15am they showed up and analyzed that the lift spring had broken. they gave me three cost levels to replace the spring, basically reflecting the potential life of the spring. I took the least expensive with only 90 days labor warranty but we don't use the door multiple times a day, so I figured I'd get fair life out of it. They installed the spring, set the tension, checked the opener and reprogrammed it to adjust to the new tension and they were done, 30 minutes or so! I bought an Angie's List deal from them for a door tune up, which they had done and I liked their service, so I called them for this issue. They could not have been able to test the spring for failure, it was working fine 6 months ago. I would call them again in a heartbeat for any garage door issue.

Rob was very patient, explained a lot to me. Tuned everything up for the $60 offer I found on Angie's List. I asked for a new keypad entry and he installed it - it cost $68.00 - the tune up was already paid for. We discussed a new garage door and opener. I will have them back in the fall to replace those as mine are over 15 years old.

We have been in our house almost 9 years and had not done any kind of maintenance on the garage doors or opener. We were having some random issues with it sticking, and were concerned it would need replacing or at least major service. We were extrememly pleased with this service, as the tune-up process made it like new again. The technician was very knowledgeable, quick and friendly. He assured us the system was just fine and suggested ways to keep it operating smoothly. We would highly recommend this service.

This is a Hicklin garage door that they had installed 2 years ago. I had been remiss in not doing any preventive maintenance and the garage door was sticking somewhat. Just due to normal freezing/thawing earth movement and humidity swelling the door frame. I was very pleased to see an offer on Angie's Big Deals for a garage door inspection by Hicklin for $60. They remounted the door to stop the sticking and fixed it all to run perfectly. All as part of the annual service at no extra charge. Thank You!

On Sunday I came home to find that neither my keypad nor remote would work to open my garage door. I cleared the memory and recoded everything, but had to recode over and over because one minute the remote would work and the next minute it wouldn't; one minute the door would close, the next minute the opener lights were blinking and the door refused to budge. I saw that Hicklin, who had replaced an 8-year-old Chamberlain garage door opener with a Chamberlain Professional Formula 1 opener and installed new rails and neoprene ball bearing rollers for me five years ago (with a lifetime warranty), was offering a tune-up deal on Angie's List. On Monday I purchased the deal and Hicklin quickly emailed me to set up an appointment for the following day. On Tuesday Rob arrived on time and was professional. He saw problems that the prior installer hadn't, replaced brackets and reconfigured the rails so that the garage door would open and close smoothly. I'll have to touch up some paint on the door because of the bracket replacements, but it's good to have the door working better. Rob told me that the code problems could be a bad logic board or wi-fi signals messing with my opener's circuitry. He deemed my opener not old enough to have logic board problems, so he said the usual fix is to replace the wall switch, which they can do for $85 if I continue to have problems with the remotes and keypad.

The technician said he had never worked on a door with the old springs and did not want to check tension or mess with them. His solution was to sell me a brand new door. His service consisted of spraying all moving parts with silicone. I felt all he wanted to do was put in a new door period. I would not recommend this company,.

Response from Hicklin Door Services
Sorry to hear you were not completley satisfied with your service. The reason the technician recommended a new door versus fixing your old door is the type of spring system you have is outdated. The parts needed to fix your type of spring system are simply not available. Although it is very rare to come across older systems like this there are still some doors still operating that are over 30 years old. The parts on these few remaining doors are no longer being manufactuered becuase the doors being made today are much different and far more advanced. Some of these older systems are so outdated that our technicians have never seen them before because so few exsist.

I was very impressed with them! I paid for the seal to be replaced around the exterior of my garage door at the time of the service maintenance, but then didn't hear back from them for over a week. I was just planning to call and inquire when they called me. He explained that they happened to be out of the size needed for my garage so had needed to wait for the seal to come in. They came out the very next morning to repair it (on time - even early!). My only comment would be that they could have let me know that they were waiting on the parts, but it certainly wasn't unreasonable and I understand they are busy. (Isn't everyone?). Overall - I would give them an A+ and would certainly recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: I purchased the garage door maintenance from Anige's Big Deals. They came out on time, were very professional & courteous. He answered a lot of questions for me - and taught me a few things as well - which was great. I asked for an estimate to repair the seal around my door also. Very reasonable, so I had them come back & repair that also.

Great experience as I purchased the door tune up on a Sat and was contacted Sunday. Appointment at 9 am Mon. Not use to that quick of a response or service. I purchased the tune up because we are selling our property and wanted to make sure all was in good order. Meanwhile the wife calls and says garage door won't open. Released latch and raised it manually and found very heavy so figured it had a broken spring inside the tube. Emailed Hicklin about the issue and sent pics of part number on tube in case they needed to get parts. The young man showed up right on time, quoted me 299.00 for new assembly installed with no labor charge because I scheduled the tune up in advance. He was very professional and efficient and had the repairs done in an hour or so. I could have done it my self but would have wasted a whole day chasing parts etc. No regrets having them repair it and definitely recommend them to anyone needing garage door repairs.

Signed up for the "deal" because I knew something was wrong. Hicklin guy showed up right on time and got to work-- nice guy. He gave me a list of what he could do through the "deal", and then a list of what probably should also be done. (replace the spring). We talked about it a bit, and I decided to replace the spring, too...but because it was through a deal, there was no labor!, so it was just the cost of the spring. Everything has been great since then!
Description of Work: Realligned garage sensors...tightened up some loose rails.....then replaced the main spring.
