I was just days away from listing my home when this accident occurred. They made time in their busy schedule to fix the hole and indentations in the dry wall. This allowed me enough time to prime and paint the areas before the home was on the market. This couple is the best. I have used them in the past, and they are on my speed dial.
Description of Work: Repaired a hole in the dry wall and other indentations caused by a ladder falling.

I did not use Handy Guy. I emailed Handy Guy thru Angie's List and asked them to call me. In the email left them my home and cell phone number. Handy Guy never called me but did email me through Angie's List. I expected them to call so I could talk to a person. Instead just got emails thru Angie's List. Then they asked me to measure something and I'm thinking that's why I am looking to hire you. I should have looked better at everything they had listed because I didn't realize that they charge $40 to give an estimate. Granted if you hire them you get the $40 back towards the bill. Really is that customer service? I don't think so! I was surprises they have such a high rating considering what happened. They must not need the work.

8pm. Once again being blackmailed into apologizing to an Angie's List Member for not being the grateful worker bee that he/she "expects" from me. Well I'm sorry I was not what you anticipated. However, my customers (all 2000 of them) do know that I am worth using again and again. You are correct, I don't "need" the work in the sense that you imply. This member gets a "D" from me for politeness and courtesy. But that's pretty good considering people like this only get "Ds" and "F's" during encounters with human beings; without exception. Of course the member didn't know I lost an Aunt on April 17, my best friend on Easter Sunday, and currently two beloved uncles are terminally ill. For a laugh, check out my other "Ds and Fs" ratings on my profile and you will notice a couple of interesting consistencies; A. I've never worked for them, and B. Each whiner sounds like the same person (maybe half-person) like carbon copies of each other, they are unreasonable, insensitive, demanding, rude, and hostile. "You can't please all the people, all the time." On a less sarcastic note; to let normal Angie's List members get the true picture, I have included all correspondence between the Member and Handy Guy, as follows: Message from Member 4/21/2014 Need electrical motion sensors, fan vents in 2 bathrooms, fan vent in attic, Wood Trim in both bathrooms, paint upstairs bathroom, right now that all I can think of right now. REPLY FROM: Handy Guy 4/22/2014 We have some time in the schedule next week. Please provide additional information to handyguydesmoines@gmail.com. Please provide if rge exhaust fans are new install it replacements. Please also provide the size of the bathroom that needs painted. Thanks Jennifer Handy Guy 326-4596 REPLY FROM MEMBER: 4/22/2014 Would like someone to call and set up an appointment to come over and look at everything and give me a bid. Member Street City, State, ZIP Phone: Cell Phone: Thanks MEMBER REPLY FROM: Handy Guy 4/23/2014 Member, We charge our $40.00 trip charge that all invoices incur, upfront for an on-site estimate. Of course we don't charge it again when we come out to complete the work. If you wish to schedule an on-site estimate, we currently have time the afternoon of April 28th, or the morning of April 29th, if either of those dates work for you. Otherwise, we have the morning of May 5th, or the week of May 12th. Thanks, Jennifer Handy Guy 326-4596 REPLY FROM MEMBER [5 days later]: 4/28/2014 No thank you I can't believe in this day and age that you charge $40 for an estimate. When most want the business and happy to give a free estimate. I'm also surprised that you wouldn't work. I also don't understand why you wouldn't call me instead emailing me thru Angie's List. Very disappointed in your customer service which you have none! I will fid someone else! MEMBER REPLY FROM: Handy Guy 4/28/2014 Member, I am sorry you have become upset with the way we do business. Unfortunately, if we ran all over CITY giving free estimates, we would never work, or feed our family. We get between 10-20 phone calls a day, not to mention the 5-10 emails. This is through repeat business, word of mouth and our integrity and quality of work. With that being said, we don't need to give out free estimates. However, as I've given you, we give the option of an off-site estimate to help customers get an idea of pricing, and to weed out customers simply wanting to fulfill insurance claims and those wanting to merely fulfill their curiosity. Good luck in your search. Thank you for contacting Handy Guy. Jennifer Handy Guy 326-4596

Description of Work: I called to ask for a bid for building a deck on the back of my house. They told me they were "traveling" at the time of our conversation. I live within this contractor's service area. They said they charge $40 to come to my home to give me an estimate. Without asking when I might need this estimate, they suggested I email them a plan for the deck and they would email an estimate back. I wanted to be able to have the builder see the area where I wanted the deck and also discuss ideas of what would work well for that area. I don't believe someone can give me an accurate estimate when they haven't seen the area on which they would build. I have contacted several builders and none of them have charged for coming to my home to give an estimate.

Thank you for your opinion member! In my years as a handyman and contractor I have encountered all kinds of people (a couple thousand to date). Most of whom I have served with great satisfaction; many repeatedly over many years. Then there are a few I can not please at all even from the first moment they contacted me. I have adapted my expectations over the years to attend to this pitfall. There does exist a certain domestic policy regarding handymen and contractors in Iowa, that we donate our time and expense to satisfy the whims of the customers we serve and by extension even the ones we don't serve. No one expects an attorney to do this, or a doctor. Even the fire department charges you for false alarms. I do not believe that I am obliged to spend my time and resources running all over this immense metro providing educated guesses in the form of "promised bids" for free just because someone gives me a call. If I did I would have to raise my price to cover these expenses. When someone tells me they are not willing to pay my $40 trip charge up front, I know which kind of customer I am talking to. (If this describes YOU, please take notice: My profile clearly states I charge for onsite estimates. I will estimate for free via emailing pictures descriptions etc. to determine if we are in the same ballpark.) To avoid the trip fee, this member was told to send an email (which she did not) to which I would respond with a square foot estimate, if the price was not in her ballpark and she would decline, then I would save an hour or two of my valuable time (and likely $10 in fuel and wear and tear). My time is important, I am currently booked out one month. An hour or two spent with a non-paying customer is an hour or two not spent with my paying customers or even my family. As it turns out by her comments here, several contractors did in fact waste their time with her. The fact that she finds it necessary to ding my profile by retaliating on Angie's List for no good reason speaks volumes as to her judgmental character and the good fortune that I will not have to find out the hard way the fact that no one can please her. There are three reviews on my profile with less than an "A" rating. All three are because of the customer's unrealistic and insensitive beliefs as to my station in life as explained above. All three were customers that I never met nor did I perform any work for them. My failure was not playing the right part in their mind. This person makes 4. There will be more I'm sure.

I really could not speak more highly of the Handy Guy, Jeremy and his crew. I called the Handy Guy late on a Wednesday evening and to my surprise a real human answered. I explained the damage that a dog of mine had done to the house and the need for repairs to make sure there were no leaks. Handy Guy was at the house and had repaired the problem as well as provided future solutions for the door. This was all for about $100.00. I also had Handy Guy come and work on an internal cabling issue in our house. They spent nearly 7 hours trying to find a solution and eventually rewired part of our cable in a very difficult space and charged me a very reasonable rate. Jeremy is trustworthy, honest and great to work with. I would recommend them to anyone needing almost any type of repair on their home.

The Handy Guy said he would be there at 9 a.m. and he was there. He wasn't sure he could drill the holes in the steel doors but did the door in the basement and it went well. All locks were replaced and everything cleaned up by the 10 a.m. Very friendly and easy to work with. I told him I would be calling him again soon as my house needs many things done!

Thank you Member! I look forward to meeting with you again. Jeremy
I called the phone number on the website and gave the operator the details of the work that I had thought would be needed. I only described that the weathered front door needed to be refinished and that the metal security-storm door may have sagged the front framing. She said that they could schedule the job in about four weeks time and that she would call back with an estimate of the cost in a few days. The next day, she called and said that the labor for the work would be $300 for the wooden front door finishing and $200 for straightening of the door frame. Any materials would be extra. Handy Guy and his wife arrived on time at 9:00 AM on the day we had agreed on. He was very professional and assessed the situation as I described what I saw as the problems with the front door. He then described what he would do to correct the problem with the front door combination and frame. Since the weather was threatening rain that day, I allowed them to use the garage as a dry work area. They put down several drop clothes to catch any debris, they positioned their saw horses for working on the front door, and they put cushioned the tops of the saw horses as not to scratch the door. I thought that they went the extra mile to protect my property! I left them to do the work as I went to my part time job across the street. They went right to work fixing the frame. I came back about 4 hours later to see how the work was progressing. I saw that they had sanded the wooden door, put on the stain, and had spread the first coat of finish on the door. I told them that I had two other problems that if they had time, I would surely appreciate any work that they could put toward solving. I have a redwood fence with two large gates. One of the gates had sagged so much that the latch could not be unlatched from the outside and I had a set of redwood steps which the insects had eaten away at most of the supporting structure so that the steps were unsafe. He said that he could temporarily reset the gate so that it would latch correctly but he would have to come back to make the gate support structure stronger for a permanent fix at a later time. He also stated that the supporting structure of the steps (only two levels) could be rebuild with green wood so that insects would not easily destroy the integrity of the steps. I went back to my job and came back 2 hours later. The two of them had completed the second coat of finish, had straightened out the gate latch, and had rebuild the supporting structure of the back steps. Handy Guy told me that another coat of finished should be applied as the front wood door was extremely dry and had soaked up the finish unevenly. Another coat could be applied now but the door would have to be left open for 8 hours afterward to thoroughly dry. I told him that I could wait until another time when they were available in order to have him repair the back gate permanently and to apply a third coat of shellac to the front door. After they finished the repair work, he and his wife took great care in cleaning up the debris in both the garage work area and the back patio area. I plan to have them back again to do the work that they suggested. Both of them were friendly and professional. I was extremely happy that I called them and very satisfied with the work they had performed.
Description of Work: Handy Guy straighten out the sagging front door frame, refinished the solid wood front door (both stain and finish), realigned the front metal storm-security door so that the door swung closed naturally, and replaced supports for redwood back door steps with green wood supports.

Jerry and his wife worked together as a team. They showed up on time, did the work that was agreed upon, and cleaned up after themselves. Jerry seemed genuinely interested in finding the most economical way of accomplishing each task in order to save me money. I still thought the repairs were expensive but It was well worth the price given the quality of the work. Jeremy was able to match the stain on my replacement doors to my 17 year old oak woodwork nearly perfectly.

Very professional, courteous and prompt. This is a husband and wife team. On the first visit he put in a new overhead light fixture while his wife worked on the dining room table downstairs, which was missing some pegs. They both worked on the dining table upstairs, which proved to be more of a challenge because of a missing part. I asked them to come back a week later to install a dimmer in the bathroom upstairs and to fix a porch screen door that wouldn't close properly. They did all this work satisfactorily. I would definitely hire them again and recommend to others.
Description of Work: Handy Guy came out to replace and overhead light fixture and to repair two dining room tables. They also came out today to put in a dimmer switch in the bathroom and to repair a porch screen door that wasn't closing properly.

First impression was excellent. I had a disposal that stopped working. I'd tried everything I knew to fix it. When I described what was was happening to Handy Guy on my first phone call to them, Jennifer told me about a breaker on the bottom of the disposal. When I tried resetting the breaker, the disposal was fixed with no service call. When I called back after fixing the disposal, she asked it I had email and suggested I send an email with my list of fix-it items and they would send me an estimate. I did and they did within just a couple of days. They suggested an appointment time which worked with my schedule and came to do the work. Everything was done perfectly. They were polite, efficient and very nice people in addition to doing an excellent job. They are now the folks I will call for any kind of handy help I need.
Description of Work: Cleared a drain in one bathroom. Changed doorknobs that would not lock on two doors. Replaced a bifold door with an accordian door. Figured out why a slider in walk-out basement doesn't work smoothly and will provide an estimate for fixing that. Installed a doorstop on downstairs bathroom door.

This was not a job I trusted myself and my husband to do. We are not good at hanging pictures to start with and I wanted to make sure the picturess we all hung evenly and do so without destroying my walls. All the pictures had wire hangers which made the job even more challenging. The end result was beautiful. This wasn't the cheapest quote I recieved but they were able to get the job done about a month sooner than other handy men i called. I wasn't disappointed with their work. They were also very nice and professional. I will definitely contact them again in the future

Jennifer and Jeremy asked all the right questions before coming to my home so that they could come right in and get the job done with the proper equipment to hang the items. They responded immediately to my message and were able to get me scheduled quicker than I had anticipated. In fact, I had to get my beau who had the day off from work to come over and let them into my house during my work day. I also had them provide me a quote on an electrical job while they were at the house. While I didn't meet them personally, my beau said they were great in person. I would definitely recommend them and will use them again.
Description of Work: I had the Handy Guy hang two large heavy antique mirrors that weighed 30 pounds each and were 50" long in a standard height wall in a bedroom. I also had him install a large custom art piece (61x75) on a 17 foot high wall. It weighs approximately 25 pounds.

I just built a new home and my general contractor hired this company to put the screen into a frame on the screened porch. The company was told the screen porch was second story height and the screen would be put on the outside of the frame. They were told it was an outside job and they wouldn't need access to the house. I made the assumption the company came out to look at the job before they agreed to do it - they did not. They arrived the morning of 8/14 and discovered they wouldn't be able to use ladders but would need scaffolding - which they didn't have with them. They measured the height and said they had the scaffolding to handle the job. They went home to get it and returned. They put the scaffolding up and started working on the screen. They completed approximately 1/4 of the job and let us know the job was taking longer than they thought and moving the scaffolding with just the two of them was an issue. They did not complete the job. My frustration is over the fact that they very easily could have come out to look at the job before they agreed. I waited until 8/14 to have them come and now I have to call someone else and wait longer to get the work complete. With regard to the work completed - it was well done as far as I can tell. Overall - This is not good business practice. I hope they have learned from this experience - best to look at a job before committing - so the next customer will not be disappointed.

Response from Handy Guy
I am sorry for your inconvenience, I understand that is probably the biggest cause for your dissatisfaction. I do acknowledge everything about your report except for a couple of things: -The job was indicated as 11 windows and was actually 23 when we got onsite. -There was no where to prop up a ladder without scratching the anodized aluminum finish on the commercial frame so we opted for scaffolding, which is what stopped us; physically lifting the scaffolding in and out of tight rocked landscaping etc. -I offered to not charge the customer for their inconvenience. -I was originally contacted by the customer's contractor (her brother) who refused to schedule a $40 onsite estimate. The actual customer reporting was told that an onsite visit would cost $40 (my trip charge) upfront as well, but elected to just schedule the work, and get my opinion the day of. -The screen frame is not residential grade by traditional standards, and does not have a traditional round spline but a flat specialized spline. When it became apparent that this job was not for us, I told the customer I would understand if they didn't pay us, and did not have to because we did not do what they wanted. He insisted on paying. I think that giving me a poor grade on Angie's List is unwarranted because I didn't do anything wrong and she also left out that I did a great job installing the four windows we did. Can't win 'em all! I do feel sorry for your inconvenience, and will be sure to emphasize my estimate fee for future customers.

He did some work for me inside the house, he hooked up some electrical things and he also did some carpentry work for me. He did a fair job, I think that his price was fair and his professionalism was very good.
