Description of Work: This provider contacted me the last week of August. He had some questions about measurements, etc. I replied the next day answering his questions. It is now 9/8/15 and I have had no further contact with him. I did send him an email on 9/8/15 inquiring about what was going on.

Dear Member. You were made aware this would not be a speedy process when told you on the phone that I was booked out until October and that even an estimate would take a while. I am in such high demand that I must charge a $40 trip charge to come onsite for estimates. (Most customers unfortunately are just kicking tires.) Even with that your interest was still piqued, so I offered that in the meantime I would send you some pictures of work that I had done. After your last email I simply had gotten very busy because as I told you, I regularly get 10 phone calls and 15 emails every day. Along with estimating and actually performing the work I am spread pretty thin. I'm sure you are just being honest and I know it is because so many in my field don't follow-up, but I explained how busy I am at the onset. If you weren't willing to wait, simply let me know. It is too bad that your impatience has lead to this unwarranted "C" rating and your statement that you will not hire me. You have received your estimate and I have not heard back from you since. My time got wasted too. Where may I rate you?

Description of Work: We had some water damage to the ceiling on our main level. They repaired that, got the patch to match the existing one and then repainted over it so it was not noticeable. They also did some odds and ends. They cleaned out the sink, re-hung a door and did some caulking around the bathroom.

Wonderful!
Description of Work: Handy Guy rebuilt a custom wooden front door for me. I could not get anyone to do the woodwork in town because it was too small of a project or they wanted to charge $3,000.00 for a brand new custom door as opposed to rebuilding the current door. The work entailed taking the door apart and replacing the rotted sections. He did a fabulous job and I truly appreciated his handiwork on this project.

I can't speak highly enough of the Handy Guy. He is punctual, honest, considerate, professional, knows his stuff and goes the extra mile to take care of his clients. I have had numerous other contractors provide service to my historic home and they all lack in many areas - but not the Handy Guy. I have high standards and demand good customer service. I also am highly suspicious of contractors who make claims that sound to good to be true. The Handy Guy passes all of my tests with flying colors. I will always call him first because I know he will take care of my house hold problems AND he'll be honest with me if it's a challenge that is beyond his scope of work.
Description of Work: I hired the Handy Guy to remove an old toilet and install and new one. In addition he provided repairs to a second toilet.

For the amount of work they did I thought the cost was very reasonable. What impressed me the most was his honesty before doing any work. If he saw anything that needed more attention and might cost more then he consulted me, offered me options and let me know how much the cost would be. They showed up on time and got things done in a reasonable amount of time. They cleaned up after themselves and were very professional.

Description of Work: I contacted this company for an estimate on some plumbing repairs to my home. I received an e-mail from the company requesting additional information - such as age of the house - whether the plumbing job would entail removal of part or all of the wall, what type of piping existed in the home, etc - all things that I as a novice would have no idea about - hence the reason for calling an expert for an estimate. I sent the information as best I could via a replay e-mail provided and received an e-mail back telling me that "he did not work for free - do you?" and was told that there would be an initial fee of forty dollars ($40.00) just to come to the home and prepare an estimate. The company was terse, rude and unprofessional and I sent a reply e-mail stating that I did not care for their "interaction" and that the experience did not jive with that as advertised on their website. I will not use this company in the future and I will caution my friends to do their homework and evaluate accordingly when dealing with this company.

In order to be fair, I have decided to reply to this report by including all of the correspondence between my wife, myself and the member here, newest to oldest and will let Angie's list members decide. ________________________________________ From: Jeremy Olson [mailto:handyguy@mchsi.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 12, 2011 9:29 PM To: The Member Subject: RE: Repair estimate Member: All the emails (but the last one) were from my wife, trying to put my verbal answers to your inquiry to text, as I was busy working. I was surprised at the apparent conflict when I received the last email stating you would not use my services and you would tell all your friends to avoid me as well. After reviewing all the emails I see that you ARE a real customer and there was a miscommunication resulting in your getting insulted, I am sorry that happened. My website clearly states that I charge $40 to arrive onsite and do an estimate. The majority of my customers appreciate my attempts to formulate a ball park estimate over the phone or email to save money. (As I believe I did for you earlier this year regarding some egress window covering and frogs pest problem; if not I am mistaken). I regret asking if you work for free. As I assume you were not pleased having a leak in your bathroom, I was also having a pressured day (end of the season rush) and foolishly expedited my sentiments. I also perceived your condemnation of my methods of estimating as terse and rude and responded accordingly (mitigated by my stress level at the time.) I wish I had simply informed you that I charge for coming to do the estimate. I performed over 300 estimates over the phone and email last year and I haven’t counted this year yet. It does consume a large portion of my unpaid time and takes me away from my children. I am sorry you feel the need to give me an “F” on Angie’s list, however unless you feel compelled to amend or revise your strong criticism, I will have to live with it. I deeply regret our interaction and any disrespect you have inferred from my correspondence. If I could change it I would. I wish you the best and again offer my apologies, Jeremy ________________________________________ From: The Member Sent: Tuesday, October 11, 2011 2:53 PM To: handyguy@mchsi.com Subject: Re: Repair estimate YOu have been conversing with me via e-mail for the past two days - at least someone using your e-mail account has - and I also found that you are a member of angie's list. The home was built in 2002 and to be quite honest - your query regarding this additional information is not inspiring any confidence in looking to you to rectify this matter. Time was that a Plumber would come to the home, diagnose the issue and then a plan of action on how to repair it. I am in a town 30 miles away from Des Moines. In my request, asked if he would come to my house. Client responded by saying it is not his normal service area, but that I could call him, and we would discuss. I called and left a message on the number he provided. Did not hear back. Went to his website and pulled off a different number. Spoke w/ his wife and she said she would pass the message on. Never had a response. I can understand the 'handyman" not wanting to drive 30 miles, however I wish he would not have told me he would discuss it if he wasn't going to call me back. I had a good day's worth of "little jobs" (hanging doors, swapping out outlets, etc) and had offered additional (substantial) work in the future. My house was built in the '40s and needs electrical, HVAC, plumbing, you name it.Oh well, I shall continue to search for a handyman willing to come to my town.

I sincerely apologize for not calling back. I am a sole proprietor and receive at least 10 calls per day, while working. I believe I received one message from you on my phone to which my wife responded, but I have not personally had time to respond. I assume my wife explained how much I have to do each day and that I may be a while getting back to you. If not I am sorry. I service the Des Moines metro and adjacent cities. If I work outside that area it is with an agreed upon travel compensation in excess of my normal fee, that would have been the conversation I mentioned. Also the work would have to be a day or less and with access to a builders warehouse or similar retailer. Good luck in your search. I do not agree with your C rating (it is my first C) for not calling back a customer outside of my service area, but I do appreciate your inconvenience. Jeremy Olson, Handy Guy.

He came on time which is really important because we both work. It took two visits. The water line for the refrigerator required threading through the ceiling tiles in the basement and going through a tile floor. It was not easy to do those cables, it involved crawling under the deck. Everything looks very tidy and neat--the cable to the bedroom is virtually invisible.
Description of Work: Jeremy installed our new dishwasher and microwave and the line for the icemaker on the refrigerator. He also moved the TV cable line to a better spot in the kitchen and put one in our bedroom.

The Handy Guy is honest, friendly, responsive, clean, skilled, and dependable. I have and will gladly hire him for any problems at my home! Highly recommended.
Description of Work: I've hired the Handy Guy two times: First, he came to investigate my new bath tub that was leaking through to the room below. He discovered that the company I had hired to remodel the bathroom and install the new tub and floor and not allowed for enough piping to go between the drain of the tub and the pluming in the floor and had forced the pipes together - which meant they would eventually leak (all very easy to see once we cut a hole in the closet to get under the space tub). He did such a good job that I hired him back to install a garbage disposal. When he did that job, he pulled out the dishwasher to run a new electrical switch and we found that the former home owner who had installed the dishwasher did so by running bare wires behind it! Jeremy fix that as well as a problem with the dishwasher which required balancing.

Jeremy quoted the job, I had to wait quite a few months until I was ready to have the work done. I asked Jeremy to make sure the quote was still good, and he checked on prices, and it was. He showed up exactly when he said he would on Thursday. He went to work and fixed the hole in the ceiling. I was impressed that he took the time to talk with me (I was home working on other projects) and accepted my input. I felt very comfortable leaving him in the house by himself. He selected the very best quality product for my floor, within what I asked for. I wanted a specific pattern and color for the vinyl floor, and I what Jeremy put in was BETTER than what I expected. I am so happy with that floor! On Friday, he blew insulation into the attic. He again listened to how I wanted things done. He originally suggested that he drill holes in the ceiling of my kitchen and living room, which I wasn't too happy about, so he accessed the space to be insulated from the outside. Overall, I'm very happy with the quality of the work and materials. The only negative is that his schedule is usually booked 2 weeks out, so plan ahead.

I called to get a quote. Jeremy scheduled a time to come out and look at the damage to give me a quote. He came exactly when he said he would. The quote was a bit pricey, but I learned long ago that you get what you pay for. I determined that the quote was fair. I paid half up front, and agreed to pay the second half upon satisfactory completion of the job. The promised completion date was 2 weeks after the contract was signed. He told me before I signed the contract that he would be sub-contracting out the job. The subcontractors did the job in within the deadline. The only complaint I had about the subcontractor was that he used some salty language in the presence of my 5-year-old. Other than that, the job was done well, and on time. Well enough that I am planning on calling them back for another job.
Description of Work: The area around my chimney had rotted out. The quite a bit of the structure needed replaced, and the rotten siding needed replaced. There was also not proper insulation in the chimney area, and I asked for a quote to also insulate the area properly.
