Description of Work: Tree in my front yard had blown down in a large storm, half of it was in the street. They came out later that day and worked after dark (under portable lights) to get the job done right away.

A contract was agreed upon in 8/2012 that was initiated by a Groupon (for 3 hrs. of tree work) but included additional work, none of which was ever completed. Work was first scheduled for October 2012, then the next month, which came and went without communication from Embark all winter. The coupon value expired in January 2013, but owner, Mr. Harden stated in writing that it would be honored beyond that date due to the weather and scheduling glitches early on that kept bumping my work further back. After many calls and emails, I finally got a response in the Spring and work was scheduled for April (no show, no contact), then May at which time Embark did make an appearance and I was told that the work could no longer be done under the original contract d/t further die back in one tree since the job was bid. Mr. Harden went on to say that his Groupon customers regularly expect more work from him then can be accomplished in 3 hours, that he felt taken advantage of, and he had lost a lot of money with the Groupon. Although failing to understand why this information was shared or applicable, I agreed to a new contract so that Embark would be fairly compensated for the additional work brought on by not completing the work as scheduled last fall. In my haste to run back to work, I did not get a copy of the new contract and it was not left or sent to me at my request and no work was scheduled. In July, I sent an impatient email to Mr. Harden with a compromise: provide me only the 3 hours of work as indicated in the Groupon voucher, stop at 3 hrs and we’ll call it good. He responded back with further laments over being screwed by demanding, unsatisfied Groupon customers, his financial losses, and safety issues associated with the change in work scope, but agreed to provide the 3 hours per the Groupon and no more. Repeated attempts to schedule the work over the next month were futile. When he replied to schedule the 2nd week in August, he demanded indemnity should tree failure or property damage occur in the future. I agreed to hold him harmless. The excuse the 2nd week in August was jury duty and I have not heard from him since despite repeated attempts. It is clear that Embark does not intend to honor the agreed upon contract or any equitable variation thereof.
Description of Work: The agreed upon work in August 2012 included trimming of dead limbs in two trees on my property, but to date the work has not been completed.

This customer is completely omitting the fact that she (like several others) was attempting to coerce and eventually threaten me into performing work far beyond the stated value of the promotion she is referring to. She is also omitting the fact that we did show up to complete the work, but that it was raining the date of our appointment, making it unsafe to perform the work. Perhaps the most important aspect her review omits, is the fact that her tree is VERY close to her house, and was in a very obvious state of decay and needed to be removed. I informed her that I strongly recommended that the tree be removed because of its poor health and hazard to her home, but she was insistent that the tree be trimmed rather than removed. It was at this point that I began to realize that this person was not going to be reasonable to work, completely ignoring our recommendations regarding a very very obviously dying and hazardous tree. When we arrived to complete the work, the condition of the tree had continued to die back, to the extent that it was no longer possible to complete the work in the time estimated. Thus, the scope of the work had changed dramatically, and accordingly, the price must change as well. This tree had continued to take the course I had predicted, although faster than what I had thought it would, becoming unsafe for us to climb, and impossible to access with aerial lift equipment. It was a unique situation -- but it came to the point that I was unwilling to risk my life in this tree to trim it, especially in view of the fact that I could become liable for the future behavior of the tree, that is, after our trimming if the tree continued to decay and fall on her house, it is foreseeable that I could be liable for that and was unwilling to do so. I very clearly explained this to her. The day we came to complete the work, it did rain, so with my crew there, I did attempt to come to some kind of agreement with terms that would consider the change in the tree's condition, and I did provide her with a copy of the changes she agreed to in writing on that day. Groupon had sold about 4x's the amount of the promotions that they had told us would sell, and we attempted to be forthright and upstanding about it by informally extending the expiration date, and being upfront with people about the time frame. Most people had no problem waiting, as they were saving money in the first place, and after meeting me, wanted me to complete the work instead of other competitors in the area. It is true that we had scheduling issues because of the way Groupon handled the situation, but we did work through it. The other difficulty we had with the promotion was customers who wanted us to complete hundreds, even thousands of dollars worth of service for only $99. This reviewer was such a person, eventually threatening us with lawsuits and other threats, over a $99 promotion which was intended to save her $125. She also fails to mention the fact that Groupon has an absolute return policy, and at no time has she ever been in jeopardy of losing her $99 as we have never redeemed a customers promotional coupon prior to completion of that person's work. In the end, Groupon garnered us a great deal of exposure -- we had a 95% approval rating upon completion of over 400 groupons; out of 400 people, 10 did not review, 5 were pleased with the service but not pleased with the scheduling, 5 were not happy at all, and 380 were very happy with us and continue to recommend our service. We were awarded with an additional gift card from Groupon for our excellent performance of this promotion.

I purchased a $99.00 Groupon with a $225.00 value in 11/2012 and job was not completed until April 2013.. Poor communications throughout the months to get them to actually complete the job was agonizing. Kept postponing my job and gave poor reasons. The work that was completed was done well.

Response from Embark Tree Services
We had scheduled this customers work based on her concerns with 4 trees. One portion of the work involved trimming a very large tree above a neighbor's house, while the other portion involved removing several smaller trees. Although she approved our estimate in part, when we arrived onsite to perform the work, another tree service was onsite working on the neighbor's tree; I assumed that she had done some shopping around and hired them to do the project as she had not communicated with us, although we had a date scheduled for the work and gave us no notice of the changes. As for the time span of the work, she was informed at the time of her purchase that the Groupon company sold an overwhelming number of the promotions, far exceeding what we were led to believe would be offered. In an effort to be upstanding despite Groupon's handling of the situation, we extended the promotional value far beyond its stated date so that our customers could still receive the value of their promotion. The two main issues with the Groupon have been that many people wanted us to provide services far beyond the value of their promotion, but were unwilling to pay the extra money that it would take to complete their projects -- many people lashed out at us because of this, even though we were very generous with the application of the value, in many cases beyond the time span the Groupon provided. The additional problem with Groupon was that we were told we would be selling 100-150 of them, while they sold over 400 of them and left us holding the bag. We informed our customers of this issue at the time of their consultation (before the work was even scheduled) and in all but a couple of cases, everyone one agreed to wait as long as it would take because they were getting their tree service performed at less than 50% of its retail value. Despite this person's poor review -- Groupon's customers final rating of our service was over 95%, high enough that they sent us a gift card as a reward for our performance. Had this customer given us prior notice of the other company being onsite completing other portions of her project, we would have been able to complete her project sooner.

We, too, obtained a Groupon coupon. We waited to contact assuming that they would have an influx of business. Got a reasonably quick estimate in Nov. 2012; but didn't detect an email follow-up for the bid for final OK. Waited until this spring to see what was going on. After several unreturned phone messages, we finally contacted Groupon to see if the vendor was even still in business. That finally prompted a response with a re-send of this email which we quickly responded our and quot;OKand quot; for the work. We were originally scheduled for work in late April. We've had three and quot;no showand quot; schedules with a 2-3 week delay with each re-schedule. It rains on our last scheduled day and we get bumped 3 more weeks. We just want the work done. We suspect that he already had turned in our coupon for his money as he asked for it and my wife gave him the number. We re-contacted Groupon with our suspicions which they didn't confirm nor deny; they just cancelled the coupon and gave us back our $99 in and quot;Groupon bucksand quot; which I'm not happy with, either. I agree that Andrew seemed very knowledgeable; however, the bane of new business owners is a painful lack of customer understanding as it goes towards service perception. He and his service is probably good at what they're supposed to do; however, providing the customer service necessary to sustain a business will likely doom him. The nasty combination of his bad (non-existant) service with a Groupon situation and a and quot;not perfect weather windowand quot; like the other reviewers experienced provided for this toxic review. And we still have a dead tree to remove and have to start, again, to find a better experience.
Description of Work: Was supposed to remove a moderately sized dead boxelder and trim a mature honey locust.

This customer purchased a Groupon for 3 man hours of tree service. Groupon had led us to believe that we would sell between 100 to 150 of the promotions, but then buried us under over 400 of them. We created a systematic approach to handle the influx by conducting an initial consultation to review the work to be performed, as well as to let our customers know of the unusual position that Groupon had placed us in; our response was to extend the expiration date of the promotion and keep building our schedule -- we informed all of our customers of the inordinate wait time, and nearly every one of them agreed to wait as scheduled -- because they knew they were saving a great deal of money. In fact, this promotion found our customers paying less than 50% for their tree work. Part of our system to keep track of the influx was to present estimates via email -- we specifically informed our customers that they needed to respond to the email with an approval of the work order in order to get scheduled. This particular customer waited months to contact us in the first place, and then waited several more months to respond to our email estimate. As we worked through the extreme conditions that winter, several storms came through slowing down our progress considerably. This customer seemed to have absolutely no understanding or empathy of how the weather affects the tree service industry, nor the unusual aspects of the Groupon situation, although we explained both. When this customer became very snarky with us, I informed them that they should get a refund for the promotion, because Groupon has a "no-nonsense" return policy. In every single case, we redeemed the Groupon only AFTER the work was performed -- but we did ask for the redemption codes before the work was performed so that we could confirm that the coupon had not yet been refunded. In the end, Groupon left us in an unusual situation, but ended with a 95% approval rating with Groupon customers. Our ending rating was so high with Groupon that they sent us a gift card as a reward for our outstanding performance. The 2 problems we had with the promotion was selling far more than we were led to believe that we would sell, and also people being pushy with us to provide far more value for their promotion that what they had purchased. In this case, the customer waited several months to even contact us, and several more to follow up with us -- I don't see how this was our fault.

During a recent storm, half of a tree fell on our detached garage. I contacted the owner of the tree service through his website, and after a couple of emails we set up a time for an estimate. When he arrived, I showed him the area, and stated that I wanted to keep the brush and wood (less time/work for him). He quoted me a price of $250 (plus tax) to get the partial tree off the garage and cut it up into manageable pieces. Also, because it was storm damage, he placed our job on higher priority. I was impressed with his knowledge. He knew about the several different kinds of trees on our property and gave advice about how to deal with them in the future (much appreciated). He did the work within 1 to 2 weeks of the estimate, while we were gone. He also sent an email afterwards explaining how the job went and that everything went well. It was a very pleasant experience. The owner knows what he's doing, quotes a fair price, and did exactly what he promised. I would recommend him to friends and family, and I look forward to hiring him again.

I had purchased a Groupon for Embark and contacted the owner, Andrew, for an estimate in August. While the company is relatively new, he was knowledgeable and assured me he would be doing the trimming and would do so by climbing the tree, rather than trying to bring in a bucket. Without prompting, he said he could not recommend doing any major work on the ash tree, given the likelihood of its eventual demise due to the emerald ash borer. He suggested cleaning up dead branches and improving clearance for the garage roof, which was what I had planned to request, but I was impressed with his honesty. He scheduled the work for December, after a hard frost, to avoid any danger of oak wilt disease. Despite some equipment difficulties and the illness of a crew member on the day of the work, he and a co-worker arrived shortly after 8 a.m. and worked until 4:30 p.m. or so. Most of the work involved a very large pin oak that needed extensive work to elevate the lowest branches, clean out the interior and remove deadwood and broken limbs. Even though the wood chipper was out of service, they did an excellent job of cleaning up after themselves and hauling all the refuse away in a dump truck. They were careful with my property and with my neighbors' properties. The trees look great.

It took a few week to set up an appointment for an estimate - which I anticipated, because I knew the Groupon likely caused an influx of business for Embark. I met with Andrew and was extremely impressed with his knowledge, expertise, and seemingly genuine enthusiasm for his line of work. Originally I thought I would have a few trees trimmed. After speaking with Andrew and learning that was probably not necessary at this time, he suggested a growth regulator for my beautiful very old oak tree which is very close to my home. I loved this idea. I also asked about trimming a very small maple that was also close to my house. Andrew recommended removing the tree as it would continue the same growth pattern after a trim. This made perfect sense and we plan to have this done in the future. The reason I rated the company a B was the follow-up after the appointment. I notified Embark I wanted to do the growth regulator and was told the product would be ordered and I would be called about a time for its application. Weeks went by. I had to make serveral phone calls to get this application on the schedule. While I understand product application may depend on the weather, a total of approximately 6-8 weeks passed between the time I asked for the service and the time it was completed. Again, I expect this has a lot to do with the increased business the Groupon brought in, and also the beautiful mild weather we had this fall in Des Moines. If this is the case, it's a good thing as the Groupon did what it was intended to do - bring in more business. However, each customer needs to still feel like their project is important, no matter how big or small. My advice is if time allows and if need be, a future customer may need to follow up a few times. I will say Andrew was very apologetic at the time that had passed and explained that they were indeed very busy. I would hire him again as I think his knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm for his craft outweigh the wait. I'd give this company a B+ if this review allowed me to.
Description of Work: I purchased a Groupon for Embark Tree Service. The Groupon was a $99 Groupon but for $225 worth of work from Embark. I met with Andrew Harden, the owner/arborist, and after some discussion had a growth regulator applied to my white oak tree. The tree in question is fairly close to my house, and I wanted to be able to keep this tree without having to remove it because of its proximity. Andrew offered a great solution to this by informing me about this growth regulator product.
