The roofers were very prompt and timely in showing up to do the work. Tim was on hand when the job started in order to make sure everything went as it was supposed to. Minor additions were needed in the form of additional sheeting (the plywood that goes under the shingles) required due to wear and water damage to the old sheeting. Tim notified me of what was being replaced and was very fair in the additional charge for the extra plywood. The crew used large tarps to cover the yard around the house and catch the old roofing materials which they were removing. The overall clean up was excellent, I have done this type of cleaning before after a roof removal so I know how difficult it is. The roof itself looks excellent, I have seen other work done by Tim's crews and mine is no different than their other work. The quality and timeliness of the work were up to expectations and the price was very fair for the work performed and materials used. I would not hesitate to recommend Tim and his crew to friends or family who required roofing service.
Description of Work: Tim Wolfswinkel of DeWit Roofing was doing a roofing job for a neighbor, I liked the quality of the work that they were doing and stopped by the job to ask him to bid on re-roofing my home. His price was very comparable to several other contractors who's reputations I did not know and 10-15% less than other roofers with similar reputations to his. I hired them to re-roof my home the next day, they were on the job 1 week later. The job took approximately 1 1/2 days, his crew stripped off the old roofing materials and replaced bad sheeting before installing the new shingles that I had specified. The shingles installed were Certainteed Landmark, the home is a 1500 square foot split foyer with a hip style roof, there is also a 12'x12' roof over the deck which required a rolled "peel and stick" type roofing.

I had received estimates from multiple roofing companies to fix a leak over my garage. A few guys quoted a price without really investigating the cause. Another guy fixed temporarily with a Band-Aid solution that lasted less than a year. Tim from DeWit didn't make any unrealistic promises and was honest from the beginning. He kept me in the loop throughout the process and consulted with me on numerous occasions. Although I ended up fixing more than originally anticipated (and consequently spending more than anticipated) I feel good about the work the company completed and I rest easier knowing that the work was done correctly.
Description of Work: I had a leak in my garage and had DeWit out to look at it. After getting the run-around from other roofing companies, Tim Wolfswinkle from DeWit was honest and realistic about the issue. He identified the issue fairly quickly and identified additional issues that I decided to resolve. Although I ended up spending more than I had originally anticipated or hoped for, I am confident that the original issue is resolved and that the repairs DeWit made will stand the test of time.

When we were looking for a contractor to replace our roof, we got on the internet and googled roofing contractors. deWit Construction was one of three contractors that came up. When I didn't receive an answer on the first contractor I called, I clicked on deWit Construction and within 5 minutes I was contacted by Tim Wolfswinkel . He agreed to come out on the following Saturday afternoon to take a look at my roof and discuss what we wanted and what needed to be done. After surveying the roof Tim provided us with a bid to tear off the current shingles, install an new venting system that would allow better air flow into the attic, replace the trim around the garage door and a couple of areas on the facia along with replacing the shutters on the front of the house. Tim stated that they could be out the following Tuesday to do the work and that it would be a one day job, start to finish. To us, that is what got them the job. Their crew was here at 8:00 AM that following Tuesday and the job was completed by 5:30 that evening. They did an excellent job of cleaning up when they were done and the quality of their work was very good. The roof and other repairs look great and we haven't had any problems with our roof. I would recommend deWit Construction to anyone.
Description of Work: We were in need of new roof on our house. We were continuously repairing and replacing shingles due to high winds. We also needed the shutters on the front of the house replaced, the trim around our garage door replaced along with areas along the facia in front of the house.

We called around for different roofing companies to give us bids and after meeting with several others during the bidding meetings, we decided to go with Mr. DeWit. He was definitely the most professional out of them all and his bid was right in line with the rest, not the most expensive and not the cheapest but right in the middle. He gave us a date that he would have the work completed and we were impressed when the crew showed up right on time and completed the work. When my wife and I arrived home we were even more impressed when we did the walk around the garage and we couldn't find a single piece of evidence they were there, the same for the inside of the garage as well. Mr. DeWit called that night to follow up and make sure everything was to our liking and to see if there was anything else we needed or any questions we had which impressed us too. We would definitely use his services and recommend him and his crew for roofing jobs.
Description of Work: We hired Mr. DeWit's company to remove an old roof off of our garage and replace it with a new one. Not only did they perform this service in a timely manner but they didn't leave a single sign they were there after they left except for a new roof.

Replacing our roof was a condition of the pending sale of our home. DeWit Roofing provided very timely estimates as well as follow-up conversations as to how we were proceeding with the process of replacing our roof while coordinating estimates, roofing color and style, and completion date(s) with the new buyers. Work started and was completed as outlined in our verbal conversations and as written into the estimate. DeWitt used quality materials and employed an experienced roofing crew. Tim Wolfswinkel, owner of the roofing division, personally inspected our roof and provided the timely estimate. Tim was also on-site for the beginning of the project and worked well with his crew in all aspects of demolition, replacement of old shingles, clean-up, and the final inspection of the roof as well as the property around our home. Once every aspect of the job was completed, Tim personally stopped by our home for a final conversation about the entire process and in presenting us with his bill. The final dollar amount was exactly what was detailed on the original estimate. I would most certainly use DeWitt for any future roofing needs.
Description of Work: Our 12 year old house needed new shingles. These shingles were the original shingles and were within a year or two of failing to provide the necessary protection for the elements. DeWitt provided shingle samples as well as information pertaining to types, style, and quality of the products on the market today. We easily arrived at the shingle style and color that best matched the needs of the house. The shingle purchased has a wonderful warranty and is backed by DeWitt Construction (as specified in the estimate of costs). Tim's roofing crew quickly staged the property for the removal of the old shingles, tar paper, and flashings. ALL removed shingles and nails were quickly picked up and removed for shrubs and the lawn. The new shingles were delivered and stacked in an area of the property that didn't compromise our yard. Every effort was made to keep the yard tidy and clean and not allow anything to blow into the neighbors' yards. New tar paper, starter shingles, roof edgings, and flashings were installed as quoted. The entire job was completed in two half day increments (10:30 on a Monday and finished Tuesday PM). Again, all scraps of shingles, paper wrappers, nails, tar tubes, etc. were picked up from the yard. Gutters and downspouts were cleaned and inspected prior to leaving the final day. Once finished, Tim Wolfswinkel, owner of DeWitt, personally stopped by the house to ensure our 100% satisfaction.

He is extremely professional. He is very calm and quiet spoken. He has come up in the construction business and is a very nice young man; I don’t think you could ask for anyone better. He gives you a sincere comfort level. His mannerisms are excellent. He explains answers to your questions. He came out the day after he got married late on a Friday night. It was getting dark outside and he still offered to look at the roof. He has enough knowledge in his trade that you can tell him what’s going and he will give you an approximate estimate.
Description of Work: He analyzed the number holes in my roof and the diameter of the holes. He estimated the number of shingles that need to be replaced, approximately 11 shingles. It’s not as small of a job as it may seem.

De Witt Construction gave us a fair estimate for the work required after a very thorough examination of the problem. The reasons for the leak were explained to us and we were told in detail how the company planned to remedy the situation so we wouldn't have further problems. We had ample warning of their time of arrival and how long they would take. The crew was friendly, efficient, and self-reliant...they didn't require ANYTHING from us. Usually most other companies want to borrow this or that, et. al. They came prepared and finished quickly. We are very satisfied; we would hire then again instantly should we have a future need.
Description of Work: De Witt Construction was called in to inspect and solve a leak in a garage roof; the house is only six years old but the difficulty arises from some poor initial planning around second story windows and roof levels which meet over the center of the garage. De Witt found the source of the trouble and solved it.

Our experience with Tim Wolfswinkel and deWit Roofing was excellent from our first phone call through the extremely timely completion of our project. Tim was cordial, knowledgable and obviously experienced. He did a thorough evaluation of the project and explained the steps of the process to us. He was helpful in product selection and made well reasoned recommendations. We reviewed other estimates but had no question about whom we wanted to hire. DeWit' Roofing's estimate was competitive and they accommodated our need for unusually timely completion. Tim personally supervised his crew and checked with us throughout the two day process to be sure that we were comfortable with the work. The crew cleaned up very, very well and were enjoyable to have on our property. Our original call was based upon Angie's List reviews. This company delivers what they promise. Even though already very competitively priced, deWit was offering a 5% up to $500 coupon for Angie's List members. We have unrelated construction work to be done and will hire deWit Construction for that based upon this experience.

Description of Work: I had a leak in my newly remodled living room. I inspected and found my roof to be in need of major repair. I called Dewit and Tim came to my house to inspect. We had a major hailstorm that damaged our roof. After a visit from the insurance adjuster, we were told that it damaged only the west side of the house. And off I went to Angie's List. I have had extremely good experience in the past with the route and hoped that good luck would prevail - and it did! I selected 2 of the top roofing companies on the list for quotes. Both quotes were for the same work but the first came in far above both the adjuster's quote as well as the second quote from DeWit. Since I appreciated Tim Woldswinkel's candor and communication skills, I told him we would go with him if he could promise two things: the job would be completed in one day and the site would be spotless when he completed the job (i.e. no nails strewn throughout the lawn, driveway, and sidewalks. He told me he would be there at 8:00 AM and sure enough, he and his crew were there as promised. Because I knew nteiher the brand nor color of our original shingles, he had to remove them and take samples to the supplier to determine a match. I received a call mid-morning indicating that upon removal of the shingled he found 3 rotting sheathing boards and recommended that they be replaced. He gave me the total cost for purchase and installation (i thought very reasonable) and I gave him the go ahead to replace them. I came home mid-afternoon to find the roof well on its way to completion and the rotting boards in the driveway so that he could show me what was replaced. He told me he had walked the whole roof to ensure there was no other damage and there was none and took the time to explain why he thought the sheathing had rotted (initial installation issues), and what was left to complete. He again assured me that the roof would be done before end of day and they site would be cleaned. As the last roofer finished, i watched from inside my house, another one using a broom to our back deck, a blower on the patio, driveway, and sidewalks, and a large magnet over all (including the grass which was on the other side of the house) picking up nails. Upon inspection, it was truly cleaner than before they started and none of my plants or trees were damaged. The next morning as we were leaving for vacation (nothing like cutting it close), i noticed that several of the shingled were not laying flat on the roof so i gave Tim a call. he assured me that because the weather was cold, they shingled were a little stiff and they would "relax" in a few days but to make sure that I gave him a call if they didn't. We just came back from vacation, and sure enough, those shingles are as flat as ever, just as he promised. Tim emailed me a Certificate of Completion that I just sent to the insurance company for the remaining reimbursement as well as his bill. At the time I contracted with him, he was offering a "coupon: for 5% off from Angie's List, and he remembered to deduct the 5% from the bill. I just got through mailing him his check and couldn?t be more pleased with the experience. My co-worker asked how the job went, I told her my good experience and she asked for his card, so hopefully, he can expect additional business. Thanks, Tim, for a great job (and that extra note about recycling all of the old shingles and metal, rather than just dumping them was also great to know!)

Our experience with deWit was very positive. Tim came out to our house the same day I called and gave me an estimate before he left. We got four different estimates and Dewitt was the best value. Our job had some unique challenges including Tim had to coordinate his work with another contractor we had doing other work on the house. Also, our home is over 100 years old and has some unique architectural features which Tim worked closely with us to ensure that we maintained the integrity and charm of the old home. The crew did a nice job and was very professional and courteous. At the end of the day they cleaned up the job site very well. Would I hire them again? Definitely.
Description of Work: We had some ice dam damage on a portion of our roof. deWit roofing removed two layers of existing shingles, repaired sections of the roof where the sheeting had rotted, installed ice and water shield, roof vents, drip cap and new shingles.

Our experience with Tim Wolfswinkel of deWit Construction and Roofing was very good. Tim understood the urgency of fixing the roofing items quickly because of the pending house sale, and the work was performed the same day I called. Tim kept us updated during the repairs, and he gave us his recommendations on the proper way to complete the work. An example was his recommendation to replace the metal vents instead of fixing the old ones. Once we agreed on this approach, he went out and purchased vents that matched our roof color. We were so appreciative of the prompt professional service during a stressful time of selling a house!
Description of Work: We were selling our house and several roofing problems were required as a result of the housing inspection. We hired deWit construction and Roofing to make the following repairs: Replaced metal vents Repaired flashing around chimneys New sewer vent boots Replaced missing drip edge

We got a verbal quote from him, but he did not follow-up. He was at a neighbor?s house, and we asked him to come and give us a quote. He gave us a general verbal quote and said he was going to email a written quote to us. Three days later, I called and asked for the quote, and he said he had been really busy and hadn't done it yet, so he was going to email us. Three days later again, he called my husband asking for our email address saying that he tried sending us an email, and it did not go through. My husband provided him the proper email address and was told he'd send it right out. Two days later, he left my husband a telephone message stating that he wanted to discuss a few things before "finishing up the quote" and sending it to us. Earlier that same day, however, we had hired a different company because of the lack of follow up. My husband did not return this final call because we felt like we were getting the run-around. ***Update in response to DeWit's response. I provided this update when a representative of Angie's list called me & asked for our opinions on DeWit. I very specifically stated in the TELEPHONE interview with Angie's list that we did NOT hire this company. I explained the reasons why we did not hire the company, which are truly and accurately outlined above. Today, I received a call from Tim from DeWit asking if I was the one who posted this. Tim stated that he had called a few people this morning, and had looked me up in the phone book when he finally deduced that it must have been me that posted this comment. A few notes about this: 1) my phone number is unlisted and not publically available; 2) Angie's List clearly provides that "your name, address, and this review information will be available to the service provider being rated"--thus, the assertion that I somehow withheld my identity is absurd. I am properly registered with Angie's List, and I can only presume that this is how Tim contacted me in the first place. Regardless of how Tim came to call me today, I truthfully informed him that I did speak to Angie's list on the phone the other day and that I did provide my experience to Angie's List regarding getting a quote from DeWit,i.e., we were promised a written follow up, and despite several attempts and communications, still did not have it nearly a week and a half later, so we went with a different company. I expressed that I could not give good "grades" based on my experience because the lack of follow through is, in my opinion, very unprofessional. It was also very frustrating for us, because we made clear that we would not proceed with any company without a written estimate and because we also made it clear that we planned on selecting a roofer within a few days (DeWit was one of the last estimates we sought to receive). In his phone call to me today regarding my Angie's List opinion, Tim from DeWit basically told me that I was a liar who was slandering his company. He said that Angie's List doesn't call people and that I was lying about that. He claims that he looked me up in the phone book, even though my number is unlisted. He claims that I misrepresented who I was on Angie's List and concealed my identity, apparently because I have a different last name than my husband. He also accused my husband of lying. While Tim's phone call may have originally been intended to "rectify" my unhappiness with his lack of follow-through and to ask me to remove my negative review, he succeeded in doing nothing more than making me feel extremely harassed. I express no opinion and have never expressed any opinion as to the type of work DeWit does. As far as I know, they may be outstandingly good roofers. However, I stand by my opinion regarding MY EXPERIENCE with them in relation to my attempt to get a proper quote for services. We obtained seven different estimates before hiring a roofing company and every other company provided us a written estimate promptly and with no problems. We delayed deciding on a roofing company for nearly a week while we waited for DeWit to follow through with their repeated promise to put very generalized numbers into a written quote format. They failed in this regard, and that is the basis for my review. It was my understanding that Angie's List is supposed to be a forum where people can honestly share their opinions regarding experiences that they have with contractors and service providers. Apparently, DeWit believes that you should only share your opinion if you have something positive to say. While I certainly understand that positive reviews are helpful to a company in difficult times, I will not be bullied into providing a positive review when my actual experience was negative. And frankly, given Angie's Lists' motto, "reviews you can trust," it seems pretty clear that the service is not intended to bolster DeWit's business, but to permit CONSUMERS to share their actual experiences so that can make an informed decision in hiring a service provider. My experience with Tim during his phone call to me today affirms for me that I made the right decision in not hiring him. I would note, however, that had he followed through with any of his three separate promises to provide a written quote, I would have happily given him a positive review and this whole situation would have been avoided.
Description of Work: We got a generalized verbal quote from DeWit Construction and Roofing for a new roof and the repair of some underlying damage.

Response from Des Moines Area Roofing
We at deWit Roofing take great pride in our work and our customer service. Unfortunately we are not able to satisfy every customer or potential customer. We take full responsibility for any shortcomings but always ask that the customer or potential customer clearly communicate with us while we are in the process of providing a service or in this very case, an estimate. We were asked to do this bid while in the process of bidding the members next door neighbor. We subsequently roofed the neighbor's house and he gave us an A review on Angie’s List. The communication breakdown we've gathered from the situation is that we took down or were given an incorrect email address at the time of the initial meeting. We then tried to reach out to [name removed] (this is who we met with and not the member) via phone and unfortunately he did not return any of the calls leading us to believe that he had chosen another vendor. There were a few other attempts at reaching him but again there was no response. The member claims that she called us to request a bid via email and deWit does not deny that. We can only deduce that the differing last names of the clients requesting a bid on the same residence created confusion that deWit Roofing again takes full responsibility for. This is a lesson learned for deWit Roofing and we will continue our outstanding customer service bearing this instance in mind. We are grateful for all feedback but ask potential customers to read all of our reviews before making a character judgement on our company. We strive for perfection but will ultimately fall short once in a while. Reading all our reviews will ensure a better picture and expectation of the craftsmanship, time and attention you will receive from deWit Roofing.

Our roof was leaking into the garage. Sent email and received a call from Tim that evening. Tim stopped over the next morning to check out the roof. He even stopped over on a Saturday to do a more detailed inspection. Once they had a good idea of the issue, we scheduled a day for the repairs. The repairs were completed in a day and within a day or so we had another strong thunderstorm. No leaks were found.Tim's crew checked all of our flashing and corrected what they found to be installed incorrectly. The repairs and dealing with the company went very well.
Description of Work: Leaking roof repaired. Flashing correction.
