We were called after entering our information in a drawing for a gift card at an Auto show. A month and a half after the show we get a voicemail saying they drew our name for a $40 gift card to Toys R Us or Texas Roadhouse. When I called back they said someone would come to our house to present the gift card and do a presentation on fire safety. They stated they would only discuss fire safety education. We were not told how long this would be so I figured about an hour. My husband doesn't get home until 7-7:15pm so I scheduled for 7:30 thinking we would be done in time for my 3.5 year old sons bath time. I also have a 6 week old daughter so schedules and bedtimes are very important. First thing the guy does is say it will take an hour. I said that we weren't told how long it would take and could it only be half an hour. He says it really takes an hour and there's a 12 minute DVD included. But he says he will try and be quick but he gets long winded. I never would have scheduled for that time if I had know how long it would take. He then proceeds to tell us he works for American Fire Safety and they sell DeTech fire protection systems but he wouldn't discuss that at this appointment. Well you just did and then proceeded to follow it up with a 10 minute talk about how we can work part time at your company!!! I work for the government and my husband teaches at a local community college, we don't need to be door to door salesmen and certainly not with two kids at home. We even stated this yet he continued to sell us on working for their company. The presentation consisted of scare tactics to convince you that the fire safety equipment you currently have is not sufficient to protect your family. Yes I know smoke rises, yes I know about the importance of an escape plan with practice. The guy was there for an hour and a half!!! And didn't leave until 9pm. This is not ok and I felt tricked into letting a scam artist into my house. He took an entire evening to tell me what I already knew about fires. He told me his company was A+ in the BBB and had great ratings on Angies list. I checked the BBB and the Bettendorf office isn't even there!!! They are on Angies list but there isn't a single review. I also checked out their prices since he didn't have a brochure to give us. It took some digging but a fire protection system from them cost $1,500-$2,500! That's nuts for some smoke alarms, heat detectors and fire extinguishers. I felt conned into letting this person into my home. I was frustrated that his hour presentation that I asked if it could be half an hour turned into an hour and a half!!! While the guy himself was nice and admitted he was new the company is a scam. They wanted another hour of my time to discuss their products and prices, not gonna happen. While this didn't cost me anything monetarily wise I felt betrayed, conned and tricked. Spoken from an angry mother and home owner.
Description of Work: Presented fire safety education. And then tried to schedule another appt for selling their products. UPDATE: The owner of the company called to talk about this review. I did not call back as I don't want to give them anymore of my time. But at least they contacted me and apologized for any misunderstanding.

Response from American Fire Safety
I'm very sorry that you had a less than favorable experience with our company. We do everything we can to make each experience a positive one. As you had stated "Bill" is brand new, in fact yours was only his second presentation since completing his training as an Educator for our company. He is an older gentleman who is struggling with some health issues and has had a very difficult time finding a job because of his age and health. We decided that we would give him a chance. I'v had discussions with him about the importance of completing his presentation in the time frame that we promise. Most companies might have terminated him over this type of customer feedback but we will continue to work with him and hopefully he will improve with additional training. You had set your appointment with our senior schedule Mary, she has work with us for almost 7 years without a single complaint. She has always informed people that out presentation takes about an hour, I'm very sorry if this was not communicated to you clearly. Bill did tell me that he had offered to reschedule your appointment to a time that would be more convenient for you when you initially objected to the one hour time requirement. I understand that you agreed to continue expecting it would only take one hour and no longer, We have been in business for 29 years and yes we do have an A+ rating with the BBB. I'm not sure how you were not able to find that as it can be easily obtained online. We continue to work with a number of organization in our community promoting fire safety. We are frequently invited to speak at civic groups, schools and business. We are frequently invited by volunteer fire departments in the area to participate in their fire prevention efforts. Many of our customers are firefighters as they see the value in what we offer, not only with the information but also our products. If we were only selling smoke alarms then I would agree with you that it would be an expensive purchase but we don't. We market the most affordable monitored fire protection system available today. Our system is comparable to that of ADT that charges typically $50 per month vs our $15 per month. The quality of our protection is second to none, we have saved 100's of lives and in fact have never had a loss of life or serious injury due to fire among our customers. The topic of home fire can be frighting, because it is real. I don't know of a way to sugar coat the topic without helping people to understand the fire problem. The biggest hurdle to overcome when educating families about home fire is the number one misconception "it wont happen to me". I realize that most people believe they could have a home fire and don't usually say it won't happen but rather they behave like it won't happen. You mention that yours is the first review on Angie's List and that is correct. Unfortunately satisfied people seldom take the time to write reviews. Just by virtue of the fact that after 29 years of business yours being the only negative review of American Fire Safety, I think speaks volumes for the integrity of our business. Again, I'm very sorry that your experience did't go as either of us had planed. We are a small family owned local distributor and we pride ourselves on customer satisfaction. Please let me know if there is any way that we can make it up to you as we truly do want to make this up to you. Sincerely, John Hutchcroft Owner, American Fire Safety
