Description of Work: The 'handyman' is a very experienced carpenter, and had much useful knowledge to help me save money on small maintenance tasks which I was able to do myself. Steve put more clips on all the window screens on two dwellings in about an hour. He knows about many aspects of construction, and is able to to all the jobs I have tried to get someone to do for about two years. It was a treat to find someone knowledgeable, eager to do the tasks, efficient, and reasonable.

Description of Work: It has been incredibly hot July, August, and September in Hawaii. Steve told me that I needed a whole house fan. He told me to hire an electrician then he would install the fan. I let the electrician install the fan and the electrical because Steve didn't have the time. The fan does not work. It can barely pull a piece of toilet paper up that is placed right next to it with the fan on high speed. Steve said it was installed properly, now I need a roof ridge vent, so I had a roofer come out and install the vent, voiding my roof warranty. The fan will still not work. I told Steve that this fan is not appropriate for my attic venting. Steve will not come and fix the mess. He now states that I need to hire a expert on attic airflow to fix problem. Steve has never taken any responsibility for this $2,000 plus mistake. Today, I hired a handyman to add more attic vents, it still doesn't work. This whole mess started in July and nothing has been done. I have been cooked for all these months. For what this has cost and still not fixed, I could have put in really nice air conditioning system. Steve has tried to blame everyone but himself. All the e-mails, back and forth proves that he never did anything to fix the mess and just left me with the bills and the problem that to this day has not been fixed. Steve, please come out and remove this fan , patch the huge hole, and pay me back the money I have spent on your huge mistake. Zero customer service!

Response from Maui's Handyman Service
I am not sure why we received this review. But attached is the email that was sent in reference to [Member Name Removed]' Attic Fan. It is worth noting that when considering a attic fan, be sure that the attic is "over vented" as the unit takes warm air from the home and forces it out the attic ventilation. Here is our response email: [Member Name Removed] Received and read your emails. As to your whole house fan. Originally, you had wanted me to install gable vents alone to aid in exhausting the heat from your attic to help remove the heat from your home to which I explained would not be enough. In fact, I said that I would not do the work if the intention were to simply ventilate the attic and relieve the heat from your home as new gable vents may not be enough. I think it is worth noting that having a whole house fan installed was a "suggestion" based on my understanding that the heat building in your home with no place to go. My evaluation was from ground level and as you recall, I mentioned to you that you need to "over-vent" your roof in order for the heat to escape. As I have experience in whole house fans I understand that "before" one is installed, a visit to the attic is necessary. The installer of the whole house fan needs to check that there is adequate venting "before" installing the unit (see below). "If" I was hired to install your whole house fan, I would have done the attic inspection prior to install. If I remember correctly, we were trying to fit you into our schedule but because your electrician was already routing the wiring for your fan, you had him install your whole house fan while he was there. You mentioned to me afterward that he had never installed one before and took a while on the project. Being paid by the hour, he was expensive and not experienced in whole house fan installations. (Which would explain why he did not inspect your attic for sufficient ventilation) After the whole house fan was installed by the electrician, you were upset that the unit was not working. It was not sucking the heat from your home. I came by and after you explained what you did (installed a whole house fan) - I told you then that the attic was not properly vented and that the person who installed the whole house fan should have checked for proper ventilation. That's when you told me you could not wait for me to install it and you had your electrician install it and this was his first unit install. I "suggested' that you contact a roofer and discuss venting and a ridge vent as a possibility to help remove heat from the attic as the whole house fan forced warm air from your home into the attic. Once again, the roofer should have considered the purpose of a roof vent and its effect with a whole house fan. He should have considered whether the vent would be a help or not. He was up in the attic, the fan was operable, it is something that I would have considered "before" installation. I sincerely regret that I was not able to do the work for you. I understand that you were in a hurry to get the work done and could not wait. I don't think that "blaming" me for the work done to your home is fair. I was not compensated in any form and, had the right person installed your whole house fan in the beginning, there may not have been further work needed as he would have mentioned that without proper roof venting, the unit would not perform well. (the manufacturer mentioned that to you as well) In fact, FHA and HUD recommends 1 sq foot of attic ventilation per 300 sq ft of attic floor space. There should also be a 50/50 balance soffit venting and roof venting. If your roof is 1200 sq ft of attic floor space you will need 4 sq feet of roof ventilation. The more the better, especially with a fan that is sucking warm air from the house and "forcing" it out roof vents. ref. http://www.chasenw.com/blog/how-to-calculate-for-proper-attic-ventilation/ But don't take my word for it - here is a article about whole house fans from energy.com Whole-House Fans I would be happy to come by and see if there is anything more that can be done. But a whole house fan does work with proper ventilation. Adding two gable vents to the attic may help, but once again, that is merely a suggestion and not a cure. It may be better to have a cooling engineer evaluate your home before investing more money on the project. Hope this helps.

It went well. Sometimes you never know what you'll get from a contractor, if we could do it ourselves we would but we are seniors and need help. The owner, Steve came out and looked at the work and was very nice. He took pictures of what we wanted and and he explained how they were going to do everything. They took out the old windows and door and took them away. They cleaned up the property and the work was done just as we agreed. He evengave us a senior discount and because my husband fought in the war we got a small discount there too. It was a joy to work with Steve and I would recommend him to my friends.

I have had three condos completely renovated on Maui in the last 12 months. I have used several contractors on the island with great satisfaction. The work might not always get done on time, but it has been my experience that contractors don't avoid people when they call, make promises to start the work and don't or operate their businesses like a person on the corner selling fruit. Overall, this was a complete waste of time. If this company's work is anything like the complete lack of professionalism, maybe I should be thankful that he never started.
Description of Work: On 12/21, I contacted Steve @ Maui Handyman Service for a small, but urgent job. He came to give an estimate the following day and said that we would email a quote. A week passed with no response. I emailed him and he sent a quote that was a little high, but fair. I immediately responded and asked him to do the work. The work was to be completed by 1/6 (at the latest). On 1/6, I called multiple times and received no response. He finally emailed me back and said it would be done by 1/12. Today, 1/11 he emailed me and told me that he simply could not do the job.

I apologize that we were unable to do the member's Job. I am currently out of town on a family emergency. I called and emailed the member several times to explain this. I have always (as you can see from previous comments) performed as promised. I regret that I was unable to do the member's job but this is the first in 9 years of serving Maui and was unavoidable. I certainly would not turn down work as it is what keeps me in business. i suggested that he use one of the contractors he used for his other condos but he said that they were unavailable and unreliable that is why he called me. The work has been undone for several months waiting for them to do it. I can understand the member's aggravation - just wish he would have understood how important my leaving to be with my family is to me.

They did a great jod. My husband and I work so we left Steve there by himself and by the time we got home he was done! The deck looked great and he cleaned up after himself taking all the bad wood to the dump. He did more than we expeected by painting areas that did not match the new paint so they would match. We are really happy.

It went wonderful. I am a handycapped person so I could not do the work and I have no children to help. I looked on Angies List and found Steve. He was attentive and worked quickly. He found some dryrot in the wall next to ny sliding door and replaced it at no charge. He gave me 15 percent off for being a senior too. I really enjoyed having Steve around. I have more work for him after the holidays.

I had a dry rotted porch and always wanted a deck around the house. My husband was going to have it built before he died but never got to it. One day my foot went went through a step and I asked around for a good carpenter. My neighbor referred me to Steve with Maui's Handyman Services. Steve came out and took time to explain what my options were and even drew out a few plans. I hired him on a Friday and he started on Monday tearing out the steps and building the deck and fence. He took pictures of the progress and kept me posted every day after he left of what he did and what he would do the next day. He was clean, professional, easy to work with and the job turned out great! I would refer Steve to anyone who needs a great carpenter. I will be calling him in a few months to put in some french doors in my master bedroom.

I was referred to Steve - from Maui Handyman Services - by a friend who used him for her home remodeling. I had some bad experiences with other contractors and was a bit shy about hiring another. But, via the coaxing of my friend, I called. From the moment I met Steve, we hit it off. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was very professional. We hired him to do our bathroom. We had a stand up shower and wanted a tub instead. He tore out the old bathroom, cleaned up every day, and installed a beautiful marble tiled bathroom for us! We loved it so much we hired him to do our master bathroom! I would highly recommend Steve and his company Maui Handyman Services. Sandy Brunell Kula, Hawaii
Description of Work: We had Steve remove our standup shower and install a tub with marble tile.
