I engaged Sean Canfield from Finishing Touch Hardwood Floors to refinish the wood floors in our living room, kitchen, and entryway following the installation of our new kitchen. Sean’s entire sales pitch to me involved promising a long list of features to his work, none of which were delivered – it was a con job pure and simple. Based on my experience – an experience I now realize others have lived through after reviewing Sean’s online reviews, I strongly advise anyone considering his services to run, not walk, away from this individual. Working with Sean has been nothing short of a nightmare. From the very beginning, Sean’s grand promises about the durability of his finish included assuring me that it was "dog-proof." He even went as far as providing numerous examples of satisfied clients with big dogs who had no issues. Fast forward, and our floors are a disaster. Sean left numerous holes and cracks in the floor that were supposed to be filled, uneven finish between the two rooms he was supposed to restore, chunks of material stuck on the floor in the finish he was using, and areas left completely untouched – the list of deficiencies is extensive. And NO, it's not from my dog Sean, it's from your sloppy work. He consistently blamed our dog for the problems, a stark contradiction to his initial claim that the finish could withstand the wear and tear of pets. The floors are a mess, and Sean's refusal to take responsibility is infuriating. It’s worth nothing that our second story hardwood, where Sean did not work, shows no scratch marks. Additionally, Sean's promise of meticulous protection for our new kitchen, walls, baseboards, and other home contents was grossly unfulfilled. Our kitchen cabinet base molding and walls are damaged, requiring a complete downstairs repaint due to sticky thick flooring material residue. Our kitchen wood needs sanding to address the gouges and scratches left by Sean. The project was riddled with delays, extending far beyond the promised two weeks to a month and counting. The pantry, a specified area in the agreement, was left completely untouched, and Sean had the audacity to claim he had "lightly sanded" and refinished it. When confronted with a list of deficiencies, Sean's true colors emerged. After I sent him a text with a detailed list of issues, Sean responded with profanity, name-calling, and hostile behavior. He finally came to the house and as we were pointing out all the obvious problems, he became belligerent, cursing at my fiancée and me, flipping us off in our home, walking out, slamming our glass front door, and causing a scene in front of our tenant and neighbors. His unprofessional behavior continued with recklessly driving off our property, peeling out onto the street, screeching his tires and causing even more of a scene. There are burnout marks on our driveway and on the street from his violent outburst. My lovely tenant just moved over from Maui after the fires, and she heard Sean screaming at us and thought of videoing him in case he damaged anything else on our property. We are still in shock as to how Sean responded in our home. As working professionals who have dealt with numerous contractors, we have never encountered someone as frightening, untrustworthy, and unprofessional as Sean Canfield. His dishonesty, lack of professionalism, and extreme temper are seriously on another level. Despite promises to address the issues with our floor, he failed to deliver or finish what we paid him $15,000 for. We are pursuing legal action to rectify the damage he has caused to our home and to recover our money for this substandard work. Avoid Finishing Touch Hardwood Floors at all costs.

The work that Sean performed basically destroyed what was left of our downstairs hardwood floors as they cannot be refinished again. The finish that Sean applied to our floors, and that he is VERY proud of as he often stated that he "came up with the idea", involves him mixing a tint/dye with the clear coat polyurethane finish. After Sean completed the job on our downstairs floor and it was apparent that all of the marks and discoloration were not going away (even though Sean stated they would disappear after 6 weeks), I reached out to the product manufacturer. They stated that no tint, dye, or color additive should ever be added to their products as it will not dry correctly. Sean's alteration of the finish and his application technique directly resulted in dark marks, streaks, and discoloration throughout our house. In hindsight, and after researching this online, it appears that Sean does this to save himself time and money even though it is specifically prohibited by the manufacturer. BEWARE! I have ample texts and audio of Sean completely going off the rails as well, and on some occasions making veiled threats. Again, BEWARE! Sean also attempted to pay me to remove my reviews, which I refused.

Sean Canfield scheduled an appointment to discuss refinishing the hardwood floors in my parents home. We scheduled for Wednesday at 10am. After waiting 30 minutes for him to show, I called him only to be told he thought the appt was the following day. We agreed to rescheduled for the following day. However, he called back an hour later and said he was in the area and asked if he could come by to do the appraisal. He arrived promptly thereafter. After examining our floors he said he could make them look like new. I had already seen his work in my cousin's home and liked what I saw. He offered a quote and we agreed on a date for the work to begin. He didn't have a contract with him, but said he would write the contract as soon as he got home and would fax it to us, which he did. He forgot to include the stairs in the quote. We gave him 50% down and would pay the remainer upon completion. The Friday before they were to begin, I called to confirm. He said he was planning to call me because they were behind on another job so they would have to begin work Tuesday instead of Monday. I reminded him that I really needed the job to be completed by Friday as my father was to undergo chemo treatment Monday and I'd be leaving hawaii to return to the mainland Tuesday. I also had carpet scheduled to be installed saturday. He asked me to reschedule the carpet installation since the final coat on the floor needed time to cure and dry for at least 8 hours, but preferablly 24 hours. He said there'd be no problem completing the work by Friday. Well, today is Friday and the floor isn't finished. One guy showed up tuesday and he only worked 2-3 hours total. He came back wednesday, 2 hours later than scheduled, and again only worked 2 hours. After calling sean Wednesday to express my concern for the Friday deadline, I was told they were doing a job in Kahala which was taking longer than expected. After reminding him again of the chemo treatment Monday and the urgency to complete the job by Friday, he said it would be done. So here i am, friday night with a floor that isn't finished. There are still nail holes that haven't been filled, several old seams that haven't been filled, and a stain that isn't even close to the darker color that i asked for. I asked the worker if he planned to complete the job Saturday only to be informed that he didn't work weekends, but he'd be here early Monday morning. I called Sean to express my dissatisfaction with the service I was receiving but was unable to reach him. I left two messages. After speaking with Sean the following day, he educated me on the final procedure. Now the floors are finished and they are beautiful! The workers arrived promptly Monday morning, filled in all the holes and cracks, sanded, and added the final tinted finish. In fact, the workers kindly came back the following morning at 7am to help me move all the furniture back in place. So overall I'm disappointed the job wasn't finished Friday las promised, but the work performed is of excellent quality. The floors are absolutely beautiful! So, I would use this company again.
