Description of Work: I hired John from ABC Handyman Hawaii based on his reviews. I needed him to install new drywall in seven holes made by my plumber to locate a water leak caused by my adjacent neighbor. He also had to replace the door moulding in the garage which was damaged from the water leak. | |On the first day, he left after the first hour because he forgot he had to take his girlfriend to the doctor but he wanted half of the payment for the job. | |On the second day, he rushed through the job. After he installed the drywall he failed to use tape at the joints before he applied the compound. The proper installation and finishing of drywall takes three days, but he did everything in one day. He came unprepared, so he used the same compound with his hands, to create texture on the wall to match the rest of the wall. It turned out to be a disaster. | |He didn't have a caulking gun to finish the door moulding, so he helped himself to my caulking gun and left it literally covered with drywall compound from his dirty hands. I also had to scrape the drippings of the drywall compound off the floor after he left. Before he left, he wanted the the second half of the payment. | |Of course, we all know that the drywall compound shrinks, so the next day the drywall hole replacements were very pronounced. It took me two weeks, on my days off from work, to doctor up the work John had done. I was furious. I will never use him again. | |John didn't even think to take an original drywall cutout to the hardware store to get a perfect match on the paint. Instead he eyeballed the color the first day, then picked up a pint size can of what he thought would match. I believe that the favorable reviews I read about him were based on John installing ceiling fans, etc and not doing drywall. I strongly recommend that you do not use him to do a drywall project, even though he brags endlessly about all the improvements he has done to his girlfriend's condo. | |

Description of Work: He did a great job. Quick, professional and fair. I had bought a new over the stove microwave from Home Depot. Unfortunately the contractor they hired was stumped on how to take our old microwave out. Called John that morning and he was able to come out that afternoon. He new right away what the problem was and how to take it out. It took him about 30 or 40 minutes. I plan to have him do other jobs around our house in the future.

 + -1 morereview I was spending all day looking for an AC Contractor that would do an installation into a jalousie for my bedroom. As many of you know, a lot of older homes in Hawaii have window jalousies, which are the absolute worst for window AC installs and insulation. I called up a bunch of AC contractors thinking they'd be willing to do a short 1 hour job for a good chunk of money, but most of them denied me or never returned my call. I later learned it's handymen that do these types of jobs, so I looked one up here on Angie's List and saw this handyman with great reviews. I called John and he promptly picked up my call. I explained my situation to him with the jalousie windows and AC and he confidently expressed that he would be able to install it without any problems. I called him late in the afternoon after business hours on a FRIDAY and he willingly squeezed me in on Saturday for an installation in a time slot between 3 - 4 PM. John arrived promptly and quickly went to work on my setup. He expressed confidence that he would have no problems installing the AC, took the necessary measurements and got to work getting the right materials for the install. He had lots of interesting stories to tell and was both very professional and friendly to talk to. He answered all my questions about the install and even answered some questions about some other issues I was having in my house. He finished in less than an hour and a half without any issues. I'm now chilling out with a great AC all thanks to John. If I need any other work done I'll definitely give him a ring again!

He quoted us a price a little higher than other quotes we had received, however, the other company we had thought about using would not be able to come and install our fans for over a week. In the summer heat of Ewa Beach, a little bit of a higher price is well worth the ability to have working ceiling fans in our home much sooner than we had anticipated. John was punctual, professional, friendly and courteous. He did a FAN-tastic job installing our ceiling fans. We are very grateful for his quick service! THANK YOU, JOHN!! We will definitely call ABC Handyman Hawaii for our future handyman needs.

 + 0 moreJohn is simply fabulous. There is nothing he cannot fix. His price is reasonable $150 to fix a Viking 1 HP garbage disposer. John was at my condo in Waikiki within 30 minutes. He took my entire garbage disposer apart. It was really tough to get it apart. I had tried all the things recommended on different YouTube websites but nothing worked. I still got the sad humming noise from a stuck-would-not-dislodge-garbage-disposer. Several tries later after taking apart the garbage disposer, John discovered a tiny metal circular fragment that resembled the head of a nail. I was looking at purchasing a brand new disposer high end at a cost of $300-$600. All the other repair people told me to get a new disposer. This one is perfect and so quiet and it fits under my sink. Now thanks to John it works fabulously.

 + -1 moreIn the upstairs bathroom, I needed to replace the ceiling with mildew resistant material, then painted with mildrew reistant paint. Installl 2 lighting fixtures replacing one over the vanity, and the one above the toilet . Walls treated for mildew, then painted again with mildew resistant paint. Install/replace old ceiling fan to a Lighted ceiling fan. Downstairs: Basically the same as upstair, the only difference is that that ceiling needed an access door put in as a precaution for future (disasters). And only a new lighted ceiling fan replaceing the old one, and moved closer to the shower/ toilet if possible. He did suggest having slats in the lower part of the bathroom door to allow more air circulation in there. He did text me more than 24 hours later to say he'd been soo busy that he hadn't even had time to creat my estimate. But, that he'd try and do one as soon as he was able. I told him thanks. I hadn't heard from him in four days, so I decided to text him and ask him how the estimate was coming along and that we had hoped we would have had one by then, and if he'd email me the figures ASAP. Less than 12 hours later I got a text from him saying after looking at the figures he wasn't able to give me a bid as it was over a $1,000 and as a handyman the law said he was not allowed to take jobs over that amount, and suggested I contact a contractor. I think if I have any other smaller "jobs" that I need done I would love to give ABC a try.
Description of Work: He was able to come in that same day that I called him to just set up an appointment time to take a look and give me an estimate, which was great!! He did a walk thru to 2 bathrooms (downstairs/Upstairs) taking measurements and pictures, and notes of what we wanted. I mentioned if he could write up an estimate and email it to me. I sent him my email via Text a couple hours later.

 + 1 moreJohn met me @ my condominium and knew how to navigate the building's strict parking and security rules. He quickly applied the drywall puddy on my hole in the wall. The puddy dried overnight and we met the next day, same time. John was willing to pick up paint to match my wall, however, I had a can that the previous owners had left behind. He painted the whole wall, which was a good idea, as I wouldn't want the repair to look patchy. He was meticulous, reliable and willing to help, which are the best qualities for a handyman.
