Description of Work: Removed 1980s all wrought iron railing from large, curved, entryway staircase. Replaced with wooden handrail and balusters. The new staircase is gorgeous, and just what I envisioned. There was a minor hiccup on "cleanup", but that was resolved and we are very pleased with the work.

One of the owners made the sales call. She was prompt, professional and friendly. I wanted a special order baluster and she was kind enough return to my home to drop a sample off for me to view. I quoted the work with 2 other providers. While Vision was not the lowest cost provider, they were happy to source the special order and allowed me to conveniently view a sample (the other providers either sent pictures or were unable to source exactly what I wanted and tried to sell me something else). The Vision quote was within 15% of the other providers and was exactly what I wanted so I felt the premium was worth it. They were a little slow to schedule the work (about 5 weeks) after I signed the contracts and provided a deposit (the special order only took about 2 weeks of that time). However, I was doing this project as a surprise to my husband and Vision was extremely helpful in keeping the secret...billing to make sure it did not show up on our credit card before it was installed, etc. The installer was prompt and friendly. However, the job required punch work (several balusters were loose, shoes were not secured, a little trim work was damaged, general clean-up of the epoxy and a section that needed to be reinstalled as it was not placed on center). They were quick to respond to my concerns, scheduled the punch work and even sent their project manager along with the installer to review my concerns. The finished project is exceptional. They were slow to bill the balance. In fact, I received a late/overdue notice before I ever received an invoice for the balance. I'll admit this irks me a bit, but the work was so well done and they were so responsive to my concerns that I'm willing to overlook a little billing annoyance. Overall, I was very pleased and would recommend Vision to my friends and family.
Description of Work: I hired Vision Stairways and Millwork to replace wooden ballusters with iron on the interior stairs in my home. This included 7 sections with 102 total ballusters.

Before installation was even scheduled, we saw and benefited from Vision's attention to detail. Because our platform inlay had to line up precisely with the inlaid pattern on the treads, accurate measurements were critical. We gave them a sketch with a rough idea of size and positioning, but Wendy came out and measured much more precisely. A few days later, Jim came out and actually made a template, so there'd be no question about the exact dimensions of our platform, any out-of-square conditions, etc. Their care with this single, crucial step reassured us that we'd picked the right company for the job. The two installers arrived as scheduled, worked as quietly and neatly as possible, and left a clean job site overnight. They even worked till nearly 7 p.m. on the first day, to be sure that we had a complete run of functional treads and safe access to our upstairs overnight. When they were finished after 2 days of work, we had a list of questions and concerns that were handled with extreme courtesy the very next day. The final step was for Vision's stain and paint guru to caulk, fill nail holes, paint and put on a final coat of polyurethane. He also arrived as promised, worked neatly and quietly, and left a clean job site overnight. He worked his schedule around to accommodate our need to access upstairs by no later than 8 p.m., which meant that he needed to finish the poly by noon on the day he applied it. Now that our staircase is finished, we're very pleased to be able to give Vision Stairways our highest recommendation. We are picky and we were asking for a very unusual installation with a lot of detailed, custom work. If they found us to be a pain in the behind, they hid it well. All we ever saw was enthusiasm for the unique challenge we were presenting - a chance to make something truly different than a more typical bid request. Again, special kudos to Wendy for her help during the design and quotation phase. Besides helping us settle on a workable pattern for our platform inlay, she also suggested new ideas for our main newel post. We had to request a custom size because the standard newels were either too small or WAY too grand for our small entryway. We just wanted the custom size and hadn't considered anything beyond that. Once we committed to custom sizing, though, she quickly said that if we were paying for a custom white oak newel, why not add a cap of walnut to truly tie it in with our unusual stairs? There was no additional charge for the wood change, so her suggestion wasn't made just to up-sell us. It did enhance our happiness with the end result, though - exactly what you'd hope when you're hiring a professional and asking them for advice.
Description of Work: We wanted to replace our builder's grade, carpeted entry stairway, including its inexpensive colonial railing and white balusters. We initially planned to do the job DIY, so we searched online for treads, risers, railing, etc., and found a company in Indiana with inlaid treads and risers offered through their web site. We loved the look, but REALLY wanted to deal with a local company for such an unusual, custom job. A bit more poking around online led us to Vision Stairways and Millwork. They responded promptly to our initial email and assured us that they could do the inlaid treads we were looking for. We visited their showroom in Woodstock and really put them through the wringer during the quotation phase: we must've asked for a dozen different permutations of wood species for treads and inlays, platform with and without inlays, newel posts both standard and custom, etc. We finally settled on a combination of white oak treads with walnut inlays, white risers, wrought iron balusters and 2 newel posts - one standard in white oak and one custom-sized, with white oak and walnut. We have to give special praise to Wendy, who worked with us during the quotation and design stage. We were able to combine her ideas and our own to finally settle on a pattern for the platform inlay. Now that it's done, that piece really ties it all together - we would miss it if it weren't there. After our visit to Vision's showroom, we were convinced that our staircase was prebuilt off-site and placed in our home as a unit. This made it virtually impossible to do the DIY job we had originally envisioned, so we opted to have Vision do paint, stain and installation in addition to manufacturing our custom stair parts.
