Please see "describe the service performed", I told the entire story there. Oh, one other item, the "B" in punctuality was because of not beginning the work on the day promised, also on the last day he was about an hour and a half late, other than that, they showed up on time and worked hard and long hours. Something else that I left out - his original quote, which did not mention, so I wrongly assumed it included, moving the furniture to remove the carpet and put down the hardwoods. I did not find out until after I had agreed to the work that it cost extra for him to actually move the furniture! I also thought this rather unprofessional. Make sure that you require a quoted line item for moving and putting back the furniture. We ended up moving some of it ourselves and paid him to move some of it. I don't know quite how he expected to get the carpet out and the new floor in without moving the furniture, and that something as essential as that would have been included in his quote, but it was not. Just something to be aware of if you use him, or anyone else. Be sure that the quote that you get includes moving the furniture and putting it back.
Description of Work: We had the carpet in our over the garage apartment replaced with hardwood (laminate) flooring. We also had the flooring in a downstairs room, which was a double bedroom, replaced with the same hardwood (laminate) flooring. Dave was quick to respond to my call and came promptly to give a quote. He was also contracted to begin fairly quickly with the work. He did require payment for the material before work began. I don't know if this is common practice now or not since it's been about 5 years since we have had any major work done at our home. I have never had to do this before and was quite skeptical about it, but paid. I had assumed I had paid for all the material (which as it turned out I had not, explanation below). Dave was supposed to begin on a Wednesday and was not able to begin until a Friday, he said due to the material not having arrived to where ever he ordered it from. He was apologetic and did arrive Friday morning on time to begin work - it did however make me extremely nervous, since I'd already paid him for the material. There were a couple of problems that occurred along the job, none of which was extremely bad, but which future customers need to watch out for. His estimate was VERY confusing. One of the line items stated "removal of carpet, staples, etc", which I assumed meant REMOVAL of the carpet. Any time in the past 27 years of marriage we had had carpet changed or other flooring removed the quote always included removal of the carpet. Dave only meant taking it out of my house, not disposing of it. Some of these problems may be of a cultural nature, he is from the north and said many times, "this is how we do it up north". It's never been the way I've had it done here in Georgia. He is new to Georgia. So we were left to find our own way to dispose of over 1100 square feet of removed carpet. The next little hiccup came concerning the quarter round molding. Apparently he had not ordered enough, by over 140' worth, and then could not find any more molding to match the color he had already put down. I ended up going to Home Depot myself and picking up molding that while not the same color, was not too far off. It still seemed a very unprofessional thing to do. A more picky person probably would have required him to take up all the molding he had already put down and go get the total amount that matched and replace it with that. The next hiccup came with the confusion over the final bill. Apparently he was adding a labor charge into the material AND a separate line item labor charge, which I discovered while going over the bill, and mostly because I had gone to buy the remaining molding myself. I noticed that I had purchased what was almost the most expensive molding Home Depot sold, but Dave had charged me more than $.60 cents more per foot for the molding he had purchased. He readily admitted that he had added a "labor charge" to the price. When I questioned him about the separate line item for labor his response to me was that no one had ever questioned him about that before and that everyone adds some to the cost of the material for profit. Perhaps this is true. I'm not certain of that, I know when we have had work done in the past there has always been a separate charge for material, and for labor. With all of that being said, the work Dave and his assistant did was excellent. They worked hard, worked long hours and did a very good job. The discrepancies on the bill could be the way work like that is always done, I don't know for sure. I just have never found it to be the case. Just be aware that if you are having carpet removed to put in your hardwood floor that "removal" does not mean actual disposing of the old carpet, and to be sure to be very certain of the line items on your bill. He did seem rather surprised about the Angie's List coupon that I showed him and I kind of felt he was not prepared for that because that was when he started trying to add some little things to the bill like tax, which I had assumed had been included in the original quote - it was not. The Angie's List coupon did not specify that it needed to be shown at the time of the quote. Again, I would use Dave again, I would just know now what to be very aware of and require a much more specific quote. Perhaps a more savvy homeowner would have known these things, but we have had quite a bit of work done over the years so - that's why I thought perhaps it was more of a differing way of doing business between the north and south.
