Description of Work: Pat Murphy updated several electrical outlets that were not up to code. They also installed a light fixture and dimmer in my kitchen. They give wonderful advice and really care about their customers' safety. Their prices are top of the line, but well worth it. Part of their work was to correct another vendor's mistake. I will always call Pat Murphy first from now on!

Description of Work: I had a previous estimate of $4200.00 for repair of an electrical failure. He did all that was required to complete the repair plus installation of whole house surge protection for approx. $600.00. He showed me what was wrong and what actually needed repairing. Very professional and competent.

The gentleman from Pat Murphy's came by Thursday, discussed what needed to be done, and examined the crawlspace & my breaker box. He came back the next morning with a colleague & did the work promptly and expertly. The price was higher than the original estimate, but additional work had to be done due to the age of my house. All of the work was completed satisfactorily, with a full explanation offered. I have used Pat Murphy several times before -- they always deliver good & prompt service. Their prices run a bit high, but the work they've done is excellent & has stood the test of time.

Description of Work: Basically a diagnosis, however, they were prompt, honest and not overly expensive. I would use them again.

Description of Work: After a detailed discussion with the office manager/appointment setter, she mentioned that I would be expected to pay a $54.95 service fee just to send the electrician, that would be credited if we did the work that was recommended, which of course was understandable and acceptable. (We had a problem with flickering lights in our kitchen on the main floor as well as in the living room in a ground floor apartment.) The technician showed up within the allotted time frame and seemed professional enough. He and I stood iin the kitchen while I showed him the lights that had the flickering problem and described the area in the house where the other lights flickered. After a mere 30 seconds of such discussion, he said it would cost $350 to diagnose what the problem was and THEN I would need to pay for whatever repairs were necessary. I said, "So for $350 you will tell me what's wrong, and then it could be an additional $1,000 for repairs?!" He said, "Yep, these problems can be really tricky and expensive." I told him I was never informed by the office manager/appointment setter, after giving her a thorough description of what my problems were, that there would be a "diagnostic fee" of $350 (if that's not the precise price quoted, it was close to that number), and that I found that practice to be deceptive. He said, "Well, then, write me a check for $54.95 and I will leave." So I did, and he did. I was aghast. Two minutes later, I called a contractor I had used in the past (Good Electric), and the technician came the next day and diagnosed the problem without flinching or sticking his hand out for a diagnostic fee. He went right to work in the circuit breaker box, running up and down the stairs to understand how the two sets of overhead lights could be affected. Total price: $282. Time spent: About 90 minutes. Problem fixed. The next day, I noticed a couple of outlets in an unrelated part of the house did not work so I called Good Electric back. The same technician came within a couple of hours and realized that his "fix" the day before affected those outlets, so I spent an additional $145 on a new circuit breaker switch and another piece of hardware (I don't remember the terminology). He went to buy the supplies and spent about an hour installing them and checking that everything operated correctly, which it did. He did not charge me for his time that day, just the hardware. He also reprogrammed the timer on a set of outdoor lights which I could not figure out, again at no additional charge. The reason I joined Angie's List and considered a new electrical contractor was as a kind of "gut check" to ensure that the typical fees I paid to (and service I received from) Good Electric were competitive and in keeping with industry standards. I am happy to recommend Good Electric, but would not recommend Pat Murphy.
