We are a full service Licensed General Contractor offering construction and consulting services at competitive prices to our clients throughout the Atlanta area. Our project experience ranges from basic interior remodeling to large-scale residential construction and renovation. Sheffield Construction has been in business for 40 years. Building and remodeling from New York, California, Florida and Georgia.
The job started off wonderfully and overall mostly turned out nice. However it took waaaaay longer than promised. We were told it would take 8 weeks or less but it ended up taking 17 weeks and when we tried to reach the contractor he became unresponsive for weeks at a time. When he finally surfaced he promised to complete the job by finishing the additional closet they started but never did. Again non-responsive. We've had to go ahead and hire someone else to complete the job.
Description of Work: Sheffield Construction built a room addition.

The project is ongoing and is expected to be complete later this summer. The owner of the company is very knowledgeable and competent in home construction. He and all of the subcontractors have been great to deal with on a daily basis. I would recommend Sheffield Construction to anyone who wants quality work done for a good price.

It went very well and the end product is truly outstanding in execution and workmanship. It was not fast, and took longer than any of us expected, in part because the job extended over a tough winter and holidays. Bill Schwed is extremely experienced and committed to a good job, following code, meeting and even exceeding our expectations. He also helped with the design based on our rough plans, offering suggestions which were based on years in the business. All contractors, of course, juggle more than one job, and there were times we felt the progress drug on and on. But generally all went very well, and Bill Schwed's(owner) ways to tie in the old and new structures were detailed and exacting and went very well. Our house is a much better house than when we began, mostly because he was willing to help us correct some flaws our house had. Bill is also committed to the job looking good,(as well as being a solid structure), and pays attention to details to accomplish that. One thing everyone should consider when chosing a contractor is the quality of his subs, critical to the success of the job. Bill's subs were truly talented, dedicated to doing outstanding work. Also, consider details because they really matter: will retouch of paint happen? will trash be removed? will all the trim be level? will drainage issues be solved? will the entire team respect your property? Sheffield scored high in all the details. (If, however, you need an architect for your design, you would need to look elsewhere for that aspect of the job, I think. ) Another consideration: unexpected discoveries arise in any renovation (I have renovated several buildings), and it is important to have an experienced crew that can problem-solve, then fix things at a fair price, not taking advantage of you. Sheffield Construction won our respect in this area especially. When we changed our minds on some design things we wanted, we had to go back to the drawing board with Bill Schwed and he worked with us. The ability to make changes was very, very important to our final happiness with the completed project. Changes are never convenient and slow a job down and increase costs, but it is important that a contractor be willing to change direction when you have made a and quot;mistakeand quot;/misjudged what you thought you wanted. The Sheffield Construction crew accomodated our changes very successfully. In general, I would highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: We required a very experienced contractor since our job involved replacement of a load-bearing wall, gutting a kitchen, building a new room with basement, a new porch, and a new kitchen, plus replacement of some old plumbing and several windows. This was both a renovation and new construction project, which had to solve several construction problems of the old structure, plus match old structure in materials and design where possible. All the trades were involved: demolition, framing, plumbing, ironwork, flooring, carpentry, sheetrock, countertops, electrical, masonry, roofing, gutters, landscaping, painting. Sheffield did all the work as described over a period of several months.

They came in on time, took out the old cabinets, re-did the plumbing so the kitchen would have a better look and flow. They added some outlets so we could have a better functioning kitchen and even added a breakfast bar on the back side of our sink! It fit so perfectly with the door to the back deck! I am completely satisfied with the color and quality of the cabinets that we received. The overall design of the kitchen was left up to Sheffield Construction and they did a MARVELOUS job!!!!! In fact they are coming back to finish our basement and hopefully our master bath is next!!! Thanks Sheffield Construction!!!!
Description of Work: Removed the old kitchen and replaced it with an amazing new kitchen!

Sheffield Construction went above and beyond to ensure I was completely satisfied with the work. They ran into electrical issues in this older home due to earlier remodeling from the previous homeowner and resolved the wiring issues. Mr. Schwed and Wesley are friendly, very knowledgeable guys, who are extremely informative throughout the project. They explained what they were going to do and answered all my questions every step of the way. They cleaned up after themselves at the end of each day. What impressed me the most with Sheffield Construction was Mr. Schwed's skill set and suggestions to save me money with the project and still get the same end results I wanted. I highly recommend this company and will be using them in the future!
Description of Work: A weight bearing wall was removed between the living room and den area with a concealed header installed in the attic for a more open floor plan layout to an older 1960's ranch style home. They corrected electrical problems to adjacent walls of these rooms and made 2 electrical outlets independent of the light switch. They installed 4 recessed can lights, 2 ceiling fans, 2 hallway light fixtures, 2 outdoor GFI outlets, 2 3-way lighting switches, 2 dimmer switches, relocated existing vents, telephone line, and electrical outlets from the removed wall. They closed up an existing window in the kitchen and mounted a cabinet on that wall to maximize storage in my small kitchen. They cut the existing cabinet which was originally custom-made for a drop-in range to accommodate my free standing range. Now, my stovetop is leveled with my countertops.

Although this was a rather small job i could see it was not easy. The job started and finished on time. I had noticed some cracks in our front basement foundation wall. I called Sheffield Construction Co to check it out. Bill came back with a method of marking the cracks so we could see if there was pressure coming from the outside of the wall. He also checked the foundation drain to make sure it was clear. Since the cracks were rather high on the wall he asked about outside events. We did have a rather large tree cut down in the front yard and when some of the chunks hit the ground the whole house shook. From that he surmised that the hits to the ground may have cracked the foundation. His team cut some holes in the foundation wall, forced re-bar in and filled with cement. They painted over the wall and it looks as good as new.
Description of Work: Identify and repair cracks in front basement foundation wall.

Working with Billy is a good experience in that he is very personable, honest, and wants to please the customer. We can be quite picky and Billy has been patient and never condescending. We plan to use him to install tile floors in our kitchen, breakfast room, and laundry. Tile work is one of his specialties. We would definitely recommend Billy's work. Our only real frustration with Billy is his, at times, unrealistic timeline for when he'll be on site for work. It's not unusual for him to say he'll be able to come on a particular day to start/do a job and end up coming one or more days later. However, he is good to call us a bit ahead before he is actually coming and, thus, we can go about our day until he gives us the and quot;30 minute calland quot; that he is on his way.
Description of Work: Billy and his men have done several repair/remodeling jobs for us. The biggest job was filling a sink hole that included the top of our dirveway and a fairly large area in our back yard (approximately 20' X 20'). Billy had to assess what needed to be done, remove landscaping and "sunken" concrete, obtain the fill dirt, have it compacted, lay a new drain line under the new drive, have the concrete poured, and lay sod where the area in the yard was filled. Billy really knows construction. We have much confidence in his knowledge, ability, and integrity. Also, he will respect the customer's concerns. We are very careful about toxic exposure and wanted to make sure that the fill dirt was not laden with toxic chemicals. We ourselves actually found a source we felt good about and Billy happily purchased the dirt from that source. Billy has also done numerous plumbing repairs/upgrades for us, including replacing a toilet, repairing plumbing leaks, replacing the faucets/washer box in our laundry, replacing outside faucets, changing faucet cartridges, and doing other plumbing repairs. Billy and his crew have also done a variety of other small jobs for us: adding crown molding, installing additional support beams in the basement to reduce vibration when we walk in the first floor rooms, replacing the vent hood in the kitchen and the exterior flapper, caulking jobs, and several small electrical jobs. It is very nice to have someone who is willing to do small jobs as well as big. We found Billy through our next door neighbors for whom Billy did a huge rebuilding/repair and remodeling after their house suffered extensive damage when their back basement wall collapsed.

The job started in late September 2009. We moved back into our house in early April 2010. With ongoing rains in September and a frigid winter the foundation repairs were completed by mid-November. The interior re-build/repairs and additions were completed by April 2010. The siding on the back of the house was so twisted it also had to be replaced. Exterior painting was completed by another company. The re-built foundation wall was reinforced with cement and re-bar. This is the smoothest straightest and most uniform cement block wall i have ever seen. Bill also did the tile work in our renovated master bath and it is absolutely fabulous. As with any project I would get a written work plan and have regular progress reviews.
Description of Work: The foundation of our house was crushed by hydro-static pressure caused by the 500 year rain of Sept 2009. The entire back half of the house dropped 4 feet. Bill and his company jacked up the house, rebuilt the foundation to current code. They had to gut the back half of the house to make repairs to broken pipes, snapped and stretched wires and broken vents. While the rebuild was progressing we added a sun-room and renovated the master bath. Bill is a master at cement and tile work and he has a number of excellent craftsmen on his crew.
