+ -1 moreThe Big Deal was a $75 Kitchen Remodel design. The owner cam out and spent about an hour with my wife discussing what she wanted and didn't want. We had some plans that had been drawn by an architect, and she wanted changes to those, and wanted the design photos showing what the finished product would look like. Apparently they took on too many Big Deal clients as they got behind. We had to wait a couple of months for our design, and when we did get them, it wasn't what we wanted. Instead of incorporating the changes my wife wanted, he just gave us a visual representation of what was on the architectural drawings. He did not incorporate the changes my wife wanted. It was a waste of time and our $75.

+ 0 moreUsed an Angie's list coupon for kitchen remodeling design. In early March, Charlie showed up on time, was very knowledgeable, had lots of good ideas and suggestions, listened very well. It took about 3 weeks to get the design back but they were very nice. No price was included, as was promised, and the island needed to be corrected so we could pull up chairs to it. However, he said he would have the price for us in a few weeks, which was ok with us (no rush.) A month later (7 May) we received the revised island drawing but one feature was left off. And no pricing was provided yet. We advised him of the island correction. He explained he was busier than he had been in many years and would choose to sacrifice potential new business to keep his active projects on schedule. We understood but were getting a little bit impatient. But we said no problem - just get to it when you can but not too long. On August 16 (3 months later), I finally called him and explained our frustration. He committed to getting it to us within a month. We finally received our quote for cabinet modifications, cabinet refacing, & the new island (~$19k) on 4th September.

+ -1 moreHonestly, business must be really, really good for Charlie Crippen. This guy is the least responsive contractor I've ever dealt with in my life. I actually made the mistake of reaching out to this person on two separate occasions for estimates - once for cabinets, and more recently for a carport estimate. Charlie will not respond to you unless you send him 3-4 follow-up emails, and that's just to get an estimate! I can only imagine what he's like once he actually starts a job for you. Luckily, I'll never know since he's yet to respond to an estimate request I sent him over 3 weeks ago. He asked me for my project particulars, which I sent immediately, and then he never responded again after 2 more emails where I asked him for the status of the estimate. Personally, I like to feel valued as a customer, and having multiple inquiries flat out ignored by someone is a horrible experience. Beware the Crippen.

+ -1 moreI didn’t want him to do the kitchen, I just wanted the design. He didn’t live up to the expectations. I called him to arrange the appointment to meet with him. He took the measurements, but never got the plan to me. I had to call him back about 2 months later, because he had never responded. He said that he was having a problem with his computer, but that he would get back to me. About 3 weeks later, he said that he would just refund the money. He was very pleasant, but just didn’t follow through.

+ 0 moreI had been discussing a laundry room re-model with Home Depot and wanted to get pricing from a couple of independent contractors. I selected this contractor as a potential as he occurred repeatedly at the top of Angie's list for cabinetry. I contacted him twice, by phone. Once was on/about 16th of October and the other on the 26th. The contractor has yet to even attempt to return my phone call or contact me. I really don't understand how he can be so highly rated when he will not even return a phone call.

He never got back to me. I called a week later, and also filled out their form on the website. Still no response for an estimate. I'm taking my business elsewhere since he doesn't need mine.

+ 1 moreCharlie was diligent and thorough in making sure that we had proper permitting and had a team of skilled professionals. Charlie helped us make solid and good decisions. This went from permitting, to having the porch designed, to roofers, to gutter work, to painting, etc. All of his crew were respectful, professional, showed up to do the work throughout the entire job and cleaned up each day while the job was in process. Charlie was good about keeping in touch with us about updates and progress. We highly recommend him and would most definitely use him again. We love our porch and are thrilled with the job done well.

+ -1 moreWe live in a small, older home where nothing is exactly squared anymore. After many years of staring at a very pink bathroom, my husband decided it was time to start over, which he did from scratch. When it finally came time to put in a vanity, we were both confused as to what we wanted as we looked through the local Do-it-yourself stores. Nothing seemed quite right and nothing was made that well -- in our price range. We decided to look for a carpenter that would make something to fit our old home, in a color we really liked, that would be sturdy enough to last. I was a little nervous about the process and not completely sure what I wanted when Mr. Crippen arrived just a day after I contacted him. He measured the area and we talked about what I wanted, what was possible and what would work best. He made it seem easy. Things went smoothly, phone calls were returned quickly, promises made were kept, arrival times were met. I just don't see how it could have gone any better. And to top it off, the job done was outstanding. I realize this wasn't a big paying job for them, but they treated us like it was!
Description of Work: Mr. Crippen's group (who are all wonderful,btw) built a bathroom vanity along with a floor to ceiling storage cabinet, plywood construction and maple, stained in a rich cherry finish.

+ 0 moreI called Crippen Woodworks on Tuesday 7/10/12 to set up a estimate to have a new deck and fence built at our home. I set up a appointment for Monday 7/16/12 at 1:00pm and was looking forward to getting a bid. On Thursday 7/12 I called and left a message because I had failed to realize that I had a doctors appointment scheduled at the same time. I stated that earlier or later or even another day during the week would work for and apologized for the error on my end. I never heard back from anyone. I thought about calling again to set up another date, but decided that if coming out to give a estimate to a potential client wasn't worth a phone call back than I probably should use this company. Disappointed as I saw all the great reviews on their work. As a small business owner myself I found the lack of professionalism unacceptable.

+ 0 moreWe would highly recommend Charlie Crippen! He was very thorough, friendly and easy to work with through the entire process. He did a good job of keeping us informed of any issues or delays. His crew worked through much of the Memorial Day weekend to meet the deadline. His price was very reasonable, especially given the curvature in the deck and the quality of the work. I have already spoken to him about doing some more work on the interior of our house and would not hesitate to hire him again.
Description of Work: Charlie and his crew built us a beautiful deck with a curved outer edge, stairs to the backyard and a walkway to our garage. They extended the lower concrete patio with additional concrete as well, since the deck was substantially larger than the one we'd previously had. They demolished the old deck and hauled it away as well. Finally, Charlie arranged to have a sub come out and stain the deck with a sealant of our choice.

Description of Work: Early this year I used an Angie's List big deal to have Crippen Woodwork's provide me with CAD drawings of my kitchen to use to get quotes to redo my kitchen. He was prompt and attentive when called to complete the effort. I was provided with working drawings of my kitchen in a format I could use to seek quotes to remodel the room. I was very satisfied with his work and the time and effort I received from him to complete this project. While he was there I requested a quote from him to do this work himself. Within a few days I was provided with a quote to complete the work. I left that sit for a number of months before I decided to move ahead and have the kitchen updated. As I was rather impressed with Mr. Crippen's work I decided to leverage his firm to project manage, build and install the new cabinets, counter-tops, electrical, plumbing and etc. My existing kitchen was a cheap, sterile unuseful environment that I had lived with for 7 years. I was very unsatisfied with the space and its' function. Six weeks prior to installation Mr. Crippen along with others on his crew came out to do final measurements obtain final choices for other items needed to complete the job - sink, lighting and etc. This also included wood and finish selections of the cabinets. Work began on 6/4 and was 95% complete by 6/8 as promised. I was extremely pleased with the professionalism and timeliness of the work Crippen performed. The transformation from what was to what is was so dramtic I thought I had bought a new home. I simply could not be happerier with how things turned out. I don't typically refer to something as being amazing, but this was nothing short of amazing.

+ -1 moreCharlie and his whole team were excellent. The craftmanship amazing, and level of detail puts them apart from the rest. Be sure that when hiring a deck construction company, to make sure they do all their own work and have a crew in place that has worked together. It will be less expensive that way, rather than the typical deck company that doesn't and hires every aspect of the job, with a mark up on 10-30%. Crippen is slightly higher than average, but you get what you pay for....this deck will look good for much longer than your typical deck and the process was pain and worry free! Crippen Woodworks is the only company we felt safe going with and trusting my gut and their other reviews worked out great. No worries or problems throughout the project. We have hired them to do additional projects. We are very happy with the whole process and the end result!
Description of Work: Deck design and build. 540sqft deck on an incline with 5' wide stairs leading to backyard. Arbor and pergola at opposite ends, pergola to provide privacy for placement of hot tub. Crippen tends to overbuild and err on the side of safety rather than just enough to pass an inspection. This is what we wanted. Even all the edges were routed and sanded so we had no rough edges, everything was smooth and the appearance was better than any deck we have ever admired or visited at friends and family members (sorry, but even family has admitted as much). Railings were one of our favorite details, with black bars (aluminum). And the special gates at the stairs and entrance to our carport are amazing, with wheels at the bottom so they glide rather than scrape the deck. They are solution oriented carpenters/professionals and will customize the job to your problems and specs.We also have Crippen coming back to build and install a carport door system for added privacy and security; and hanging vinyl lattice on the bottom of the deck to enclose.

+ -1 moreGreat experience. My house, built 10 years ago, deck included. The deck passed inspection, somehow, but since I'm not a construction expert, I failed to realize just how poor of a job was done. The desk support posts were built on fill dirt, where a hole was dug, and filled, for a septic tank. There is enough of a slope that the posts continued to slide, even after the builder supposedly corrected the problem. Charlie spent some time with me, looking at the deck and explaining in great detail, what should have been done, and what he would do to correct the problem. Charlie was extremely informative and kind. He gave me a quote, that even he admitted was not the cheapest in town. After dealing with inferior workmanship, I was prepared to pay a little more to have the job done right, and Charlie and his crew were worth every penny. They did what they promised, in a very timely manner, and I don't think I've seen a sturdier deck (and my deck is 15ft high). Not only did they keep to the quote, but Charlie graciously avoided an opportunity to ring a little extra cash out of me. I did not penalize them for being a little more expensive, because their quality, and my peice of mind, was well worth what I paid.
Description of Work: Deck Structure Repair. Replaced posts and main support beam. Repaired flashing against house.

Description of Work: I met Charlie and his crew previously when he was called in by another contractor to properly make needed repairs. He was able to correct the mistakes my contractor had made, quickly and completely. I then used them to design and build a portico on my front porch and they did a wonderful job, at a fair price. Charlie Crippen does excellent work, is honest, fairly priced, and has long-term, qualified employees. Their workmanship is the best. If anyone has need of top quality woodworking, cabinet design and construction, outdoor kitchens, decks or other remodeling , Charlie Crippen is the man to call. You will never be disappointed.

+ 1 moreCharlie was very quick to respond to my initial call and came out soon after to look at the porch. He spent a good 20 - 30 minutes talking about what he could do, and even took some time to look at my back deck since I will need to replace that soon as well. Charlie was up front about pricing as well, saying that he would not be the least expensive option because they prefer to do more high-end work, with better quality wood and construction - which is exactly what I wanted. However, I still found his estimate very reasonable for the work being done, and I had a choice between 3 types of wood, which varied the price, so it was nice to have the option to choose which wood/pricing that I preferred. Charlie and his team were able to finish the work within a week, and stayed in communication with me the whole time in case they had any questions/issues. Overall, I think they did excellent work, and I look forward to using them again on future projects.
Description of Work: My front porch needed tearing down and replacing because the frame was old and the footings were no longer any good and the porch was slanting. I also needed the wrap-around side porch rebuilt as well, as I had torn that down previously while performing some foundation work to the house.

+ 0 moreMr Crippen answered my call for an estimate and came out very soon. He took measurements, and gave me a rough estimate then and there. He emailed me later that day with a final estimate that was very close to his rough one, and which he stuck to. He also estimated that it would take ten days to complete the work in his shop and bring the pieces in to install. Later that week, my wife and I went shopping and bought a new desk for the study, an impressive black desk with gold trim. We decided that the bookshelves needed to have a matte black finish, rather than the cream I initially specified. I called Mr Crippen immediately and he informed me that I'd caught him in time to change the color at no additional charge. At the agreed on date, Mr Crippen brought in a crew and installed the bookshelves in a day. They are superb. They make the room. I am highly impressed

+ 1 moreI found Crippenwoods on Angie's list. I took out one wall and completely demolishes and redid my kitchen. Although Crippenwoods is a cabinetmaker/installer, they have people to perform all of the other associated services. I used some of them and a couple of people I found independently. From the beginning it was an excellent experience. From the beginning Crippen worked to make sure I got the product I wanted. He made sure there was no wasted space as he inserted a small cabinet wherever there was an extra inch. The end product is terrific as the kitchen looks great. The best part however was the service. The guys who work for Charlie were extremely nice and helpful. While they did put up plastic, etc., to try to minimize the mess the area around the kitchen was a mess. Fortunately Charlie did such a great job of scheduling that it was the fastest job in history for the work done and all without sacrificing quality. Charlie was done, including taking down a wall, painting, floors, appliances, etc., in just over 3 weeks. Charlie coordinated all of the workers, including those such as the electrician that I found on my own. I gave Charlie their names and I never had to speak to them again. All of this was done with a smile at all times. Really just an all around great experience.

+ -1 moreI originally gave this company a D rating based on my initial experience. Charlie missed a schedule appointment with us which caused the bad rating. The next day after posting the review on Angie's list Charlie called to apologize and gave a very plausible explanation on why he missed the appointment and took full ownership for the problem. He said he wasn't looking to save the job but just wanted me to know what happened, he agreed with all my comments.. I appreciated the call and Charlie taking responsibility for the missed appointment. so I gave Charlie another opportunity to provide a quote to me. This time he arrived right on time, was very helpful, offered some good suggestions, and went out of his way to make up for the initial bad experience. In the end I wound up going another route due to price and some concrete work we wanted done.. In looking at the quote the main driver of the higher price centered around my need for the concrete work that Charlie would have to sub-contract. Given that another vendor had experience and examples of this kind of work we decided to go with them. Once we got the missed appointment issue behind us Charlie was a pleasure to work with, he over delivered on his promises, and followed up with us after the quote. I will be calling Charlie again when we get ready to remodel our kitchen.
