Response from American Service Specialists
[Member Name Removed], Thank you for the review, I constantly work with my guys on insuring customers understand cost and how we standardize pricing for forward work. A lot of times when we look at plumbing issues we have an immediate problem. All of our plumbers and mechanical techs have access to a program which we use for working up work orders which takes a task which has been manipulated in a laboratory 50 different ways and the test professionals have physically manipulated the task thousands of different ways to accomplish the task. These laboratory situations are played out by the MEANS standard and MCA standard. Our program uses the medium of these two to calculate book time. From there we plug in our man hour rate, administration cost, advertising (angie's list cost), truck and tooling cost, parts multipliers which consider warranty cost, and the biggest expense of our business is our insurance multiplier. Our flat rate program then gives our tech's a number and that is what you signed for. I know, you can walk into home depot and check the general pricing of your parts in some situations and you are like a lot of people I have talked to over 20 + years trying to figure out how much plumbers make an hour and most of them are trying to figure this out versus their own working experience. We do our best to adequately manage our scheduling but service plumbing is not precise and we only have a general idea of how long a service call will take to complete until we actually get into the job. One long job on Monday can throw the entire week into chaos as we find ourselves bumping jobs to ensure that expectations about our work quality are met. Every contractor in the business struggles with reaching a perfect pricing paradigm where costs such as insurance, tooling, vehicles, payroll, advertising and licensing are met and the expectations of a public with an on demand mindset are fulfilled. I am truly sorry we failed to meet your expectations and will be reviewing our procedures to prevent this from happening to anyone else. If you have any specific recommendations or concerns please feel free to reach out to me.

Description of Work: I expected them to PERMANENTLY unclog a sink in addition to the hydro-jet service. It was just before Thanksgiving and we had a bunch of relatives visiting from various parts of the country. It was important that our main sewer line was cleared (since we know we had a breakage and roots were encroaching into the line). The hydro-jetting went fine, my concern was when the plumber offered to unclog a sink using what he said was an industrial-grade hydrochloric acid solution. He also installed a sink faucet for us. Overall the job was fine, I just was left feeling as if I was sold acid instead of him going on the roof and clearing the exhaust pipe. Thanksgiving went fine without a problem with plumbing, however we had to call another plumber a month later to do the job this company did not want to do. Also, the plumber did all the talking and when I mentioned to him it was THAT which made me unsure about using his service, he went as far as telling me that he felt "taken back", or something to that effect. This is why I gave them low professionalism score. I encouraged him, as a service provider, to listen more to his customers. But his reaction was totally unexpected, as if I insulted him or something. I would not use this company again, too many competitors to feel as if I was being sold a used car or something.

Thank you sir for the feed back, I am listening to what you are saying, I now it has been a long time since Thanksgiving, I didn't charge you for any of the time element for clearing the line with the acid nor any up charge on the product. Since it was dark and accessing the roof was going to take a large ladder we decided to go this way to insure you had relief for Thanksgiving. You also refused using a camera on the main while jetting. It's not a smoke and mirrors trick, One really works well with the other. That is why we offered a new "big deal" with both. I would say that once you can see what your working on it is insperperal. With the other things you have going on in your home there were many things I could have sold you, and things you wanted to buy. Like removing an old sink in the crawlspace which is acting perfectly like a hub drain for your HVAC and other lines. I Thank you for calling this out because every time I give breaks, don't charge for incidentals and or attempt to take the "low key common since approach" to a customers needs who seem highly sensitive to price, I wind up with a weird review. This situation and review will be used for training purposes. Again Thank you.

Mrs [Member Name Removed], We apparently provided good service, so I am curious about the D rating on price. When speaking with you and finding out what your needs were, there were two tasks at hand, the removal of a laundry tub and rebuilding a toilet tank. I remember your house being very nice and clean. I got the immediate indication upon meeting you that pricing of service, as with most everyone, was of great concern. I gave you our every day pricing for the task at hand. I am aware you paid 39 dollars for the discount which you received. Removing the laundry tub didn't even use the the entire 100 dollar discount, after rebuilding your toilet and receiving and additional 10% senior discount your bill would have been 139 dollars. You refused this work and had the laundry tub removed. I drove 35 minutes to get to you, spent 45 minutes with you and what it cost to do business with you cost 140 dollars. Who deserves the "D" rating?

Removed as much of the blockage as possible, then replaced a valve in the faucet. It turns out that the valve was never the actual issue, but he had already assessed it as the culprit and went to buy the replacement part, which is the bulk of the cost.

I thought I would have a finished, ready to use shower but after the job was done, I was left with a new shower that had large gaps between the shower edge and drywall and was told I would have to pay another $350 to get it fixed. I originally was going to have a tile shower installed, which would require a $350 shower pan, but decided to get fiberglass which I was told doesn't require a shower pan. I was still charged for the shower pan. EDIT: After reading Carl's response, I've changed my review. I think it boils down to a lack of communication or misunderstanding on both of our parts caused partially by difficult personal circumstances, and that all other areas were quite professional and of high quality. They did a great job on a new water heater for which I wrote an all A's review. I've got the trim for the shower handled with my friend so no worries there. I would recommend this company's services plus, as I said in my other review, they are cool guys and fun to deal with.

[Member Name Removed] Thanks for the review, I am sorry I personally dropped the ball on managing your expectations. I thought for sure the first time we met about your fiberglass shower enclosure that I had spelled out the differences in going with tile verses installing a new sectional fiberglass unit. Then I thought about it this morning reading the review. I had definitely taken it for granted that you had studied the two options when you approved going forward with the tile job. I did take for granted that you had considered the fact that we still needed drywall work and painting. The tile, though more expensive would have been the completed job. Since our conversation on Sundays install I spoke with Todd, the office manager about discussing parts with clients as he is not a plumber, and obviously confused you when talking about a shower pan. I am surprised with this review, but in retrospect it is good because this will help us tighten up our procedures especially when regarding long drawn out projects. They do say no good deed goes unpunished and I guess my sensitivity to your families recent bouts with cancer and my fathers recent death kinda clouded my judgment when doing extra work to make it the best job possible with your choices. And by the way, 350 dollars is a wild guess, I am not a dry wall paint and finish guy. This work may cost more. As I told you after my plumbing work was finished, feel free to call us for a referral for your drywall and paint work. I do hope your best friend the carpenter has time to help you and I wish you all the best. Carl Forsman Master Plumber lic mp-208338

[Member Name Removed] Thank you for your review, this kind of feed back is very instructional and welcome. Technology is awesome when it is working. My staff is actively trying to reach you and find out if you need a written invoice mailed to you. I have instructed the tech who came to your property to use your phone, get with the office and have our office make sure you get the electronic invoice emailed to you next time if he is out of range on his device. I have experienced this myself and since it is rare it is my fault for not making a procedure. Please send us an email and let us know how you would like to resolve this. I work for a contractor so it was in my nature to call a lot of plumbing companies and get a lot of prices before I commit to someone to help me with my plumbing issue. Out of all the plumbers I called, American Service Specialists were by far the most responsive, knowledgable, and professional. They were willing to discuss my problem and try to help me before they even came out or got any payment from me. Most of these plumbers are going to put you in touch with a call center scheduler that has no knowledge of plumbing and is planning on charging you 4 or 5 times what American Service charges just to look at the issue. These other plumbers send out plumbers with 1/4 the knowledge Carl has and they just are out to get as much money from you as possible. We dealt with Todd in our scheduling and Carl was the Master Plumber that came out. It's my profession to deal with trade contractors such as plumbers for larger commercial buildings. I can tell you that Todd and Carl are among the most knowledgeable I have ever encountered. This is very rare to find in residential plumbing services. They are also more than fare and not out to over charge you or provide unneeded services. They provided just the right amount of assessment and service I needed and even came out after hours and provided a very low price compared to the five other plumbers I called. If you want the best plumber for the lowest price you need to use American Service Specialists. Don't waste your time dealing with these other plumbing companies that will charge you insane prices and send unqualified people. I will use them for all my plumbing service needs from now on. I have been dealing with trade contractors for 17 years and I can tell you it was a real pleasure working with them.
Description of Work: Carl came out and did a full assessment of my property to help me find out where my water damage was. It ended up being an issue with the foundation and some of the exterior elements that were effecting the inside. American Service Specialists spent a tremendous amount of time helping me on the phone reviewing pictures and hours at my property late in the evening reviewing conditions with my issue. They still didn't charge anywhere near what the other plumbers would have charged. These guys are fare and not out to get your money like everyone else.

Customer contacted contractor to schedule a garbage disposal service. The conversation revealed that the current disposal was likely broken and the business owner/ contractor (Todd) advised customer which disposal to purchase. Contractor sent service tech to house to install disposal. Work was satisfactory, but price was exorbitant - far in excess of the $150-$175 this service should cost. Customer asked for an explanation from business owner, who was exceedingly unprofessional and rude. After agreeing to refund $100 of the total charged, the contractor/owner has now reneged and disappeared. UPDATE 1/21/2016: TO THE BUSINESS OWNER - I have seen your response below, and find it hard to believe that I had to first hear from you in this manner, rather than contacting me personally given the severity of my complaint. When I first asked for an explanation for the price, Todd (I thought he was the business owner) was unprofessional and rude responding, "You paid it didn't you?!". Your method of handling my complaint makes the other reviews on the site highly suspect. If you're the owner you should have contacted me yourself, rather than allowing your employee to renege on a committment, and waiting for the bad review. "F" rating reiterated.

Mr. [Removed Member Name] Thank you for your review. As for my office not responding to you that is per my instructions as I understand you were being very unreasonable on the telephone. My staff tells me that you wanted an additional 100 dollars after your Angie's list discount which brought your bill to $234 dollars which I might add that you were aware of and you agreed to before work was performed on your property. This additional $100 dollars was to be refunded to prevent your giving us a bad review. It is obvious that you are an uninformed consumer so I will be happy to share with you how and why or how pricing of all legitimate businesses happens. Why do services cost so much? Ours, and most all companies largest expense, insurance. Insurance cost 32 to 46 cents of every dollar a legitimate contractor is able to charge for goods and services. After that the rest is broken down to paying the guy who you met at your property, vans, trucks, parts, office staff and yes our program that generates our pricing for us even includes a 12 to 15 percent profit margin. That being said after a lot of study, we are about 3 to 5 percent lower than most medium sized companies. Neck and neck with the down town and Decatur companies and as much as 20 percent lower than the guys you see on the billboards around town. Basically we run this like a real business, paying taxes, some advertising, highly insured, and well equipped to perform the work. On the same day you had your disposal installed we had another client with the same repair tell us they had just had one of the big companies come to their home and simply unstop their disposal for about 50 dollars more than you paid for your change out. That process took about 12 minutes. That customer was happy to pay for the same service you received after that experience. I know it is sometimes aggravating to hire a company, have a tech show up and he is finished faster than you can blink. I have people everyday attempt to watch what I am doing so they can do it themselves later. I am good with this and quite honestly if you are a customer of ours and want to attempt something on your own I am always happy to offer advice. The gentleman who came to your home is my youngest guy, he has been with me about 16 years. He is also a licensed plumber, boiler maker, certified controller and specializes in sterilization units. This is our youngest and least experienced guy, I know he sounds a little over qualified to change out your disposal, but there is no job too small and we work on houses as well as commercial and industrial properties. If we didn't make it look easy, wouldn't you question our abilities? I hope this clears things up for you and anyone else that took the challenge to read this passage. If we can help you any further please give us a call Carl Forsman Master Plumber Unrestricted, MP208338

Carl, the plumber, was prompt and extremely cordial. He took the time to explain what he was doing and how to avoid repeat problems. He also took the time to check out what we thought might have been another plumbing problem, and made suggestions of things to do to avoid the plumbing problems which can occur as a building ages. He cleared the kitchen drain, ran enough water several times to makes sure that it was draining properly, and left the area clean and dry. As an aside, in chatting with him he explained some of the factors that go into the costs of plumbing and why the service charges can result in high "sticker shock". While that does not necessarily reduce the impact of plumbing cost, I very much appreciated that he took a few minutes to provide me with a perspective I had not considered. As I have other plumbing work that will need to be done in the near future I will certainly give these guys first crack at the job. And with the discount provided by the Angie's list promotion I got away with a fraction of what I had feared the call would cost. In all, I am exceedingly happy with American Service Specialists.

I called them on a Friday night because I needed someone to come out and fix a faucet that was running. I had to shut off the water until it was repaired, and the co-owner, Carl, came out at 7 pm, saw what was wrong, and picked up a new faucet to install around 7:30 and was finished around 8. It was an excellent response and the price was right?they didn?t charge me extra for coming out on a Friday night, either.
