+ -1 moreI have used them a couple of times. They are real good. It was a small job and he did it himself and didn’t have his crew come in. I used him to put a roof on my house a couple of years ago, and he was real responsive then and was there when I called him for whatever. If I had any questions, he was there to answer them and stuff like that. He was on time and everything and got it done at the price he said. So, there were no surprises in that. The price was right on the nose and it was whatever he said it was going to cost. If something else came up, he just did it without asking me if it would be paid for. So I am real pleased with him.
Description of Work: He rewired some outlets for me in my house.

+ -1 moreI had french doors removed and replaced in my sunroom. They seemed knowledgeable and the reviews seemed good, so that is why I went with them. I would have fired them if I had been home the very first day. The job went absolutely miserable. Considering that I spend $3000 and then had to spend $3000 again to get it redone I would give them an 'F', they were unknowledgeable about what they do. I know more than they do. They were on time and things like that. I would highly not recommend them to anybody that needed anything done.
Description of Work: I last used Down South Construction and Termite dog inspection in November 2012 for general construction.

Description of Work: We recently decided to replace our kitchen appliances. Since the cabinets were retained, they needed reconfiguration. William did an excellent job making sure all would fit. He was meticulous and neat. And you could tell he put a lot of thought into doing it right. He installed two ovens, a cooktop and a dishwasher, too. When all was in place, his employee came out, cleaned the cabinet doors and drawers and applied a refinishing product in place. William was extremely punctual and polite...I even remarked once about how gently he closed doors when going in and out of the house.

+ -1 moreAll said and done, I have a feeling Mr. Hudson underestimated the amount of work involved with painting the exterior. We were hoping for a more thorough prep job, but we trusted his judgment. Our home has a Great room in the back of the building which added a significant amount of paint and time to the cost. The old paint on the house was very "thirsty" and required more than one coat in many areas. There were a few rotted boards that required replacing, which he did a fine job except for one small area on the trim surrounding a sliding glass door. In his defense, that particular aspect was not part of the original estimate, however he agreed to fix it if we paid the full balance in advance. We agreed to do just that, and that is when William began dragging his feet and showed up less and less. I completely understand that his enthusiasm had run out for this job as it had taken much longer than I would ever have thought. He eventually stopped showing up, leaving his ladder for a few weeks. My wife and I ended up doing the touchup work, and truth be told, the loud colors we chose were a terrible eyesore for the neighborhood, therefore I personally went ahead and repainted the entire front and side of the house! Not Mr. Hudson's fault by any means, however the rotted section around the sliding door trim remains unfixed. I would suggest to Mr. Hudson that in the future he should not hesitate to discuss price adjustments with his customers rather than feel stuck with his original estimate. Had he asked, I am certain we could have worked things out financially. Leaving the job site before completion is not the way to go about it. Perhaps Mr. Hudson might look back on this and chalk it up to experience. Same goes for me. Personally, I still like the guy very much...just needs more time to build a stronger work ethic.
Description of Work: Mr. Hudson is a polite, alert and trustworthy young man, qualities which we held high in addition to the very reasonable estimate.

+ -1 moreDown South Construction Company was very prompt on the job. He came right away to look at it and gave us a time that he could be there that was convenient for us. The timing worked out really well. He was nice, polite, and did a great job. The finished product looks perfect. It's a normal price for what he did. The only thing I didn't like is we had to put down a $100 deposit a week in advance but they didn't take credit cards. They only took cash or checks.

I had received estimates from other "professional companies" and they came in higher and were not timely in their responses. I was happy with my choice in Down South Construction. They built a high quality fence for a reasonable price. In fact they did such a great job I have now hired them to remodel my bathroom! I would highly recommend them to others.

+ 0 moreSection of sidewalk was broken up and removed. A new section with bricks was installed. Mortar on bricked on from porch were repaired as well as a few on the driveway and the front of the house. Caulking around the front door was removed and new grouting installed. Cracks in the front porch were filled with fine mortar and smoothed to match surroundings. A two foot square french drain opening was cut to allow drainage in an enclosed area for the outside A/C unit. Crushed rock was used to fill the 6+ foot depth and a steel grating was installed over the opening.
Description of Work: Repiar section of sidewalk and remove tree roots causing problem. Repair mortar grouting on sidewalks, porch and house. Install french drain in enclosed cement slab for A/C

Description of Work: Will Hudson of Down South Construction Co. continued remodeling two houses (my house and my mother's house) for me in 2011 (Angie's List system made me show one date only) and did an outstanding job of all that he did. He is very easy to work with, gives good estimates of cost of work and made many suggestions that let me get even better results than I had anticipated. Because of the quantity and variety of work Will did for me, I am basically listing with limited detail the types of general remodeling he did. It is impressive that the quality of his work in all these areas is so outstanding. - Ceramic tile - Will beautifully installed the tile in my kitchen, breakfast room, and two baths. Cuts in the tile were very precisely done. - Painting - interior and exterior -- Will painted two bathrooms and touched up crown moulding in the entire house after caulking cracked joints. Refurbished and painted the front door unit to seal cracks in door and paneling under sidelights. He also painted the trim and facia boards of one house. - Hurricane shutters - Due to the great expense of purchasing quality hurricane shutters, Will custom made easily installed when needed hurricane protection out of heavy duty plywood for all my windows and doors, drilled holes in the brick,inserted anchors for screws, and numbered each covering to correspond with each window and door to make attaching protection fast and easy when needed. - Roof and new shed - Will built and roofed a very nice looking shed to cover my new and fully outdoor heating and A/C unit to protect it from debris. - Landscape - Hardscape and Pavers - Will built two patios and a walkway of pavers for me that are a 19 feet in diameter circle and a rectangle 12 feet by 15 feet. The cuts in pavers required for the design were very precisely done, and the pavers were slightly sloped toward the edges to permit proper drainage. Both patios are even more beautiful than I expected them to be. - Plumbing - Will researched the benefits of and installation process for a hybrid electric hot water heater that uses heat pump technology. Prior to installing this hot water heater, he had to reconfigure the pipes and connections because of the size and height of the new unit. (Incidentally, the 50 gallon hybrid hot water heater provides plenty of hot water and is really energy efficient.) Will is currently in the process of installing an irrigation system for me. When this job is completed, I plan to report on it. - Handyman - When Will is doing larger projects for a client, he will do some "handyman" type things if time permits, but he does not do handyman only projects for clients.

The only reason that I did not go with them was because one of the people that I worked with knew someone that had about the same price but they did a little bit more with the pavers. Their price was comparable as it was the same as the other person. I would consider them in the future if the other person is not available.

+ 5 moreMy family and I were completing some renovations on a rental property and needed help to finish within a specific time frame. I contacted William to arrange a meeting at the property and asked for pricing on specific tasks. He provided a quote for the work to be done and began soon after we reached an agreement. The work was professional looking and done in a timely manner. A couple of areas I was really pleased with were the replacement sheetrock and refrigerator end panel. William removed surrounding base and wall trim where the new sheetrock was placed. He then replaced and furred out the trim so it was still consistent with the surrounding trim on an adjacent wall. The refrigerator end panel turned out nice also. I conveyed my thoughts about the end panel to William and he used his experience and creativity to complete the job.
Description of Work: The scope of work involved many tasks including the following: replacing a large glass panel in an entry door and adjusting the door which was not fitting properly; sheetrocking over partially removed wall paper in a bathroom and hallway area; replacing a p-trap for the bathroom sink; hanging two ceiling fans and two bi-fold doors; installing two light switches, recaulking the kitchen sink; installing and connecting a replacement dishwasher which included filling in areas on either side of dishwasher to give a more custom look within cabinets; adding a cabinet end panel to the wall at refrigerator location to provide a neater, more custom look to the kitchen and cabinet area.

+ -1 moreThis is the third job that Downs Contruction has completed for me. Work was completed on time and was done with attention to detail. As before - execellent.
Description of Work: Installed a french drain to rapidly collect water run-off. Used crush run rock. The trench was about 3 foot deep and about 15 feet in an "L" pattern to allow quick water absorption from greater ground area. Also, placed large river run rock (2-3 inches) in two large areas - (approximately 4 yards). Membrane allowing water absorption and preventing vegatation was neatly laid. Border was placed around areas in a manner to ensure water run off.

+ 8 moreWe employed the services of Down South Construction after consulting with other contractors to build our front porch. The work was extensive including removing an old concrete porch and repair of structural issues. Over the course of two months we followed and tracked the work DSC and their subcontractors performed, and we were amazed at the professional workmanship this company showed to complete the mission. They worked tirelessly in the hottest part of the summer with no complaint to build us the porch of our dreams. My husband and I enjoyed watching them bring everything together to completion. My husband has a background in home building and was very impressed with the integrity of Down South Construction and the final product. Mr Hudson was very responsive to several changes that we wanted to make midstream and always had a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and a willingness to accomodate our requests. We will definitely be using the services of Down South Construction again in the very near future.
Description of Work: Demolition of old concrete porch, temporary support of roof stucture, tear down of old siding, old sheathing, stuctural repair and preparation. Built the new 8' x 42' decking, rebanded the outside receiving perimeter. Laid out the survey for the new concrete and pillar posts. Building from ground up a new gable and roof end totalling the width of the house. Built new concrete pad and stairs along with all the railings and pickets. Bolted the old and new banding together, applied hurricane clips and assorted strapping per the Georgia code for zone 3 hurricane requirements.

Description of Work: Requested a bid on fence. A bid was promptly provided. Fence is steel poles set in cement bedding with metal brackets to mount treated 2 X 4's. Then treated 1 X 6's are attached to the 2 X 4's Work required a cement pad and cement work under a 8 foot gate as well as the poles. The cement pad was graded to obtain the correct water run-off. Diligence was required to ensure the shadow box fencing was spaced so that a small dog could not escape the yard. A metal frame was used for the main gate and was assembled correctly and works well (treated wood is heavy and correct gate assembly is important). Contractor completed the work on time (a day beyond promised date due to rain). Contractor removed a section of the old fencing and removed from site. Quality of materials in the new fencing is very good and the appearance of the completed work is excellent.

Two carpenters arrived at the agreed date and time. The job was a small job and done well. Professional, on time and under budget. One could not ask for more!
Description of Work: Outside door frame needed to be repaired. Door would not shut correctly. Hinge would no longer seat. Door frame wood was cracked. Storm door needed to be removed and re-installed.

+ 0 moreI was initially pleased with the response time to schedule an appointment. The contractor called within an hour of emailing him. My brother and I flew to Savannah (we reside in Houston) this past weekend in part to meet with contractors on Jan 17th regarding some general remodeling to my mother's home. I attempted to call the contractor both an hour before and 20 minutes before our scheduled appointment to make sure he was still coming. The calls went unanswered. The contractor did not show up. Not sure what happened (maybe an emergency???), but needless to say, he won't be the contractor chosen for the job.
Description of Work: No service performed. Contractor did not show up at the appointment to be able to provide an estimate.
