About us

I hold an unrestricted electrical license in Georgia with freedom to work in NC, TN, and VA. I am a certified Lutron lighting technician and do consulting work for a variety of lighting applications to include all LED installs. I specialize in eliminating receptacles from kitchen back-splashes and installing high intensity, low energy LED under-cabinet lighting with full dimming control. I also teach the Master Electricians Exam Class. My company does both residential and commercial projects. I also am a certified lighting control technician. Recently we've completed projects that range from installing high-bay commercial lighting to changing out a light switch. My customers tell me that they trust my electrical evaluations and my work. I am often commended for being on time and communicating via phone if I will be delayed. I've never had an unhappy customer because I do what I commit to, and I don't bill the customer until the work is completed to their satisfaction.

In the summer of 2014, I gave Powerworks a B review. Let me clarify something -- I was NOT meaning to give Powerworks that grade. John was very professional, did the job well, and I was very pleased with his work. The only problem I had is that I wasn't very clear about what I needed. He did everything (and beyond) that I actually needed from an electrician. The only thing I can figure out why I gave him that review (unfortunately, did not see it after I hit enter b/c I was at work) is my own mistake and user error. In fact, I want to hire him again for another job. Sorry, John, that it took me 5 years to rectify this. I don't get on Angies List that often so didn't see your response.

I had a dimmer switch catch on fire and completely melt. Luckily damage was contained to mostly the outlet box. Matt came out to inspect, replace charred wire, and install new box and switch. Great work, great service. Very professional. Would highly recommend.

HDMI was not completed due to difficulties. Was disappointed bc I still had to pay $125. They did spend a few hours but you would think that electricians would have these things figured out. Have skinny hdmi cords with long lengths to sell on spot, or behind the tv brackets for cable box etc... Couldn't do wifi thermostat because there was no c wire pre-installed. ( why they didn't check during estimate is beyond me) Had a local heating and cooling guy (well versed on updated thermostats) come out and told me to buy a relay on amazon and then put thermostats in for similar cost. Great work on things that were completed but disconnect between estimate and actual install. Overall disappointed.

No follow thru and lack of communication. Seemed very over priced for what they did and they did not fix the problem.
Description of Work: Check electrical outlets for safety. They said three needed to be replaced. It was very difficult to get info from them. They checked the three and put LED bulbs in. I needed to know what parts I needed to get to have them replace. They never told me and they charged $155 to check it out and put in the bulbs. He said it would be @ another $155 to change the fixtures,I could not get info on what they would charge to get the fixtures. Not very satisfied with there follow thru.

Outstanding. Matt was able to diagnose 1 bad outlet that was the root cause for most of the issues. He also changed an outdoor light for us, replaced a few GFCI's and provided a diagnosis on 2 additional outdoor outlets that had been installed by the previous owner for landscaping. He was extremely helpful, quick and easy to work with.

John Donaldson the Master Electrician was very professional and explained everything as he was testing the circuits and replaced one of the outlets in the bedroom and flourescent lights in the pantry and closet. He was on time, explained what he was doing and completed all the work in under an hour (about 50 minutes). I would definitely use PowerWorks again for electrical issues.

First of all, I called John around 1:30pm to schedule an appointment for an estimate. To my pleasant surprise, he said he could come the same day and was at my house 3 hours later. My husband happened to be home, but true to other reviews on Angie's List, I felt perfectly comfortable with him in my house. He is a true gentleman. (After telling me that he was a former school teacher, I now understand why he is so calm and patient because one has to have the patience of a saint to work with high school kids!) At any rate, John had both tasks done within an hour. Did I mention that the upstairs light John fixed hasn't worked since we moved in? That was about a year ago! I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for this light to be fixed and it kept getting put on the backburner as our "to do" list grows and grows. It was time to call a professional and give my sweet husband a break. Thank you Angie's List! I would never have found PowerWorks Electric without you. I will be calling PowerWorks Electric again for other projects in the future and will definitely recommend him to others. Thanks John!

How'd it go? I would say very well.
Description of Work: An Angie’s special deal helped me get acquainted with PowerWorks Electric and its owner, master electrician John Donaldson. The special deal was a control panel tune-up and safety inspection for $95. I had no real idea what a control panel tune-up was and whether I really needed that, but I figured the whole process would enable me to get acquainted with a highly-rated local electrician, and to have the benefit of his thoughts and cost estimates on electrical issues on my property. Little did I realize then that one of my issues would shortly become a major one, and it turned out that John was extremely helpful in resolving it promptly, properly, and at a cost that seems quite fair. The electrical power to a building on my property came to a pole right outside the building, and through an outside electrical meter box attached to that pole. Over its 40+ year existence, the utility line leading to that pole endured major weather events (ice, falling tree limbs, high winds) that caused the pole to tilt a bit and the line to sag. Getting concerned, I brought this to the attention of the local electric utility. After inspection the utility technicians determined to install an additional taller pole close to the old one, anchored to the ground, and with a much higher wire eventually connecting to the electrical meter box. That took three men with two large trucks three hours to do, at no charge to me. But then came the clincher: they found the old pole itself had either rotted or snapped at the bottom and was simply holding because a bracket on top held it to the building’s fascia. Because of the danger that presented I was given four weeks to relocate the meter box or else they would come remove their meter and I would have no power. That was to be my responsibility and my expense. That’s when I called John. He came the next day, looked the situation over, and informed me of the delicate situation I was in because the local government would require me to get a permit, and the utility, which would disconnect the power while the job was being done, would not reconnect without authorization from the local government after approval from a government inspector. Since my well pump was powered by that electric line, no power meant no water until the power was put back on. John outlined the work he would have to do, putting up a mast, a new meter box, and new grounding rods while trying to keep cost at a minimum, and he scheduled the work for 13 days later. For a while he had a crew of four working while two additional utility linemen were doing their part in changing their connecting point. The local government inspector came later in the day while no one else was there, and asked for two unrelated minor corrections and the addition of an additional ground wire that John had warned me the inspector might insist on. But meanwhile my power was left on (most likely owing to John’s diplomatic work on my behalf), and John’s personnel took care of the changes the inspector wanted. PowerWorks absorbed all the permit and inspection fees. It’s hard not to like an electrician who is that helpful and has the skills to enlist the cooperation of so many people.

John is enthusiastic, professional and knows his trade. There was a mix up with our original appointment time and some confusion on starting date and time, but once we got going, we were extremely pleased with the progress, work provided and quality of the servicemen. My husband is a maniac about clean-up and was quite pleased with the service, advice and post-work clean up. We look forward to the additional work that we want PowerWorks to do for us. Very very very good experience.
