Closets By Design

As a former employee, I wouldn't recommend this company to ANYONE. Prices are blown way out of proportion for the material being used. Bogus sales prices make the client believe they're getting a deal or a major discount but not in the slightest. We are told (as employees) that there is a three to six month wait-list which makes the company seem legit right? Wrong! By the time the installers get to a clients home, they usually don't even remember what they designed. To make matters worse, we are required to ask the client for payment before the install (which isn't even legal by the way.) Even going as far as writing down your credit card numbers. If that doesn't raise any red flags, then by all means, waist thousands of dollars on particle board. To say anymore seems like a waist of breath. Don't be dumb. Find another Company

NOT WORTH THE NIGHTMARE INSTALLATION. I had a terrible experience with Closets by Design and spent over $10,000.00. On the day of installation, they forgot our pantry and thankfully I saved all the documents because they denied I ordered it. I had to resend the receipts twice to the office to prove what I had purchased, they didn't come the next day to install the pantry as promised. We had to have our kitchen in disarray until they finally came the 3rd day! The first installer to enter my home wore booties on his shoes. I assumed the remaining workers would do the same so I did not put anything down to protect my childrens' nursery carpet or my master bedroom carpet. Unfortunately, the workers did not wear booties or cover the carpets where they were walking during the install. All day, they walked on our bedroom rugs and made them dirty and grimy. When I called to complain, I was told they should have worn shoe coverings for the install. They asked for photos of my carpets which I sent. I had to have the carpets professionally cleaned by Stanley Steamer the next day costing $312. Dee McCart said to send her the receipt and she would have it reimbursed. 2 weeks go by and I follow-up today - She denies her promise and says it is not her department. ***Do not deal with this company. They do not follow professional standards for working in your home and you have to go in circles to get them to do their basic job. Not worth the money or hassle! I was going to have our garage closets done but I will definitely be using another company. RUN!

Please, please, please do not do business with this company. I should have known better. Never trust a company that demands FULL payment BEFORE they will even start the job. We recently had three closets designed and installed at over $10K. Two of the closets turned out fine, despite incorrect measurements done by the designer. The installation team was great and they were able to go back to the warehouse and do some cutting to make things fit, so while the error caused a delay, that issue was resolved. The unresolved issue involves the 3rd closet. The designer made a design error, using a 20 in deep unit in a space with just 33 inches total. That left just 13 inches between the shelving unit and the wall of the closet, meaning it was essentially not usable as designed. We could not walk in to place things on the shelf, you could shuffle in sideways but then could not bend or squat to reach the lower shelves. We immediately contacted the office to explain the problem. After several conversations with the office and then the manager, we were essentially told it was our fault that we did not catch the designer's error on the design and since we signed the contract, any corrections made would be considered a "redesign" and would be at our expense. But hey, they'd be so nice as to give us a discount! So let me be clear, me as the consumer was supposed to have caught the error made by their designer. Does that make any sense? The whole reason we hired this company to design our closets instead of doing it ourselves was to avoid these type of mistakes. Yes, this is a mistake I would make having no experience with closet design, but not one I would expect from a professional design consultant, and I would expect when paying that kind of money, any mistakes made would be corrected at no expense to me. When we got nowhere with the manager, the designer was very apologetic and asked that I give her 24 hrs to see what she could do and that was about 10 days ago and I've not heard a word from her. Expensive lesson learned as we did end up paying another company to fix the error. I absolutely refused to pay Closets By Design one additional penny to repair a mistake they made. We had planned to do two more projects with them this summer, a pantry and laundry room, if this initial project had gone well. That is business they have lost due to their unwillingness to correct a mistake. They also lost business from a friend who was waiting to see how out install went before contacting them about her project. Clearly they are unconcerned about satisfied customers or repeat business.

EXPERIENCE BELOW: I INVITE OTHER CUSTOMERS WITH SIMILAR EXPERIENCES WHO HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO RESOLVE THEIR PROBLEM WITH CLOSETS BY DESIGN ATLANTA TO INFORM THE ATTORNEY GENERAL CHRIS CARR ABOUT THIS COMPANY TO INVESTIGATE ITS UNFAIR BUSINESS PRACTICES AT CONSUMER.GEORGIA.GOV. YOU CAN ALSO TRY TO RESOLVE YOUR DISPUTE WITH THIS COMPANY ON THAT WEBSITE AS WELL. This company seemed fair and reputable at first and so on August 2022 my grandmother agreed to let them build a laundry room closet for her. She paid a NON-REFUNDABLE $1500 deposit up front (which they deposited 3 days later) and they scheduled an install date for nearly 3 months later in November 2022. My grandmother had no problem with paying the deposit or waiting 3 months and she did not expect to get the deposit back if she could paid the remainder when the work was completed. But when Closets By Design Atlanta showed up in November, they demanded all the rest of the money ($1500 more) saying for the first time ever on installation day that ALL MONEY WAS DUE UPON DELIVERY BEFORE INSTALLATION MAY BEGIN. My grandmother refused because her contract did not say that; HER CONTRACT SAID SHE WOULD NOT BE PENALIZED FOR ANY UNPAID BALANCE UNTIL THE COMPLETION DAY OF HER JOB. Naturally, she refused to pay them for incomplete work and said she would pay them when the work was complete. They refused to install without being paid for incomplete work up front and then the installers informed my grandmother that her closet would need to be redesigned and installation rescheduled anyway because the design plan they had would violate code by blocking her access to her electric breaker box. SO THEY WERE GOING TO TAKE THE MONEY AND DEPOSIT THE CHECK IF SHE GAVE IT TO THEM UP FRONT WITHOUT EVEN TELLING HER UP FRONT THAT THEY WOULDN'T EVEN BE ABLE TO INSTALL THAT DAY!!! The installers even told us that they have encountered many customers that have a problem with being forced to pay all money up front for incomplete work before they even begin installation. THEY ARE TACKY, UNPREPARED, UNRESPONSIVE, MEAN, UNFAIR, AND WILL WASTE YOUR TIME AND HOLD HOSTAGE ANY MONEY THEY GET FROM YOU EVEN WHEN THEY ARE IN THE WRONG! WE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO RESOLVE THIS FOR 5 MONTHS NOW!!! They seem to be running some sort of quasi scam because when my grandmother tried to speak to management (Mario) and the franchise owner, they were both rude especially the franchise owner Steve Parmer. He yelled at her and talked all over her and threatened to take all of the money for the laundry room project regardless of whether he installed anything in her house. STEVE PARMER IS THE OWNER AND HAS THE FINAL SAY IN CUSTOMER DISPUTES. HE IS UNREASONABLE, SEEMS UNSTABLE MENTALLY, HE SEEMS RACIST AND SEXIST, AND HE ONLY SEEMS TO CARE ABOUT GETTING PAID AND NOT CUSTOMER SATISFACTION OR CUSTOMER RESPECT AT ALL. My grandmother wanted a refund because Closet By Design Atlanta refused to abide by the contract they drew up. They refused to build the laundry room unless she pays them the other $1500.00 before they complete any work; but just like any typical scammer THEY WILL NOT REFUND HER MONEY NO MATTER WHAT. It is January 20, 2023 as I am writing this and even after trying to work with the Better Business Bureau to get a refund, CLOSETS BY DESIGN ATLANTA IS STILL REFUSING TO REFUND HER MONEY. IT HAS BEEN FIVE MONTHS AND WHO KNOWS HOW MUCH LONGER IT WILL TAKE TO RESOLVE THIS WITH THEM? YOU WILL REGRET IT IF YOU DO NOT LISTEN TO ME! NOTHING IS WORTH THE AMOUNT OF DISRESPECT AND UNFAIRNESS MY 87 YEAR OLD GRANDMOTHER HAS GONE THROUGH WITH THIS COMPANY BEFORE SHE EVEN GETS THEM TO DO ANY WORK FOR HER! PLEASE READ THE REVIEWS WITH THE LOW RATINGS AND SEE THAT MY GRANDMOTHER'S EXPERIENCE IS IN NO WAY UNIQUE. THEY TREAT PEOPLE THIS WAY OFTEN. DO NOT TRUST THEM!

We paid for the installation of two closets. One closet is correct, and the other closet is damaged and unusable. The blueprint shows plenty of space to open the center drawers. We have a voicemail to prove that Closets by Design caught this issue and offered a resolution. The resolution was not implemented, and I was on video meetings for work and could not check the work. We called the same day to let them know that the drawers are unusable.The manager refuses to address their planning error and installation mistake. We attempted to resolve within the 3 day window, but we left messages and never got a call back. The photo shows the draws are damaged and cannot be open fully. I will leave this as a 1 star review until the merchant resolves this.

I will NOT utilize their services again, and will NOT refer anyone I know to do so either. Do not hire this company for closet installations unless you want to wait all day for them to get there! The people in the office are money hungry, and will not take responsibility for their awful scheduling practices. They even make excuses and tell you it is approximate even when they arrive several hours outside of the estimated time of arrival. Their customer service is at best an F for Failure to do the right thing for their customers for their less than stellar, unprofessional and inept timeliness of getting the job done in an efficient, effective and prompt manner. Angie's List should remove them from this list of reputable companies.

Not well. Original measurements were off in 4 of 5 closets, so product did not fit properly and had to be cut down or expanded depending on the errors made. Product is very cheap and some shelves were installed with the finish peeled off or damage to the shelf. It took 3 trips and 4 weeks to get things somewhat fixed. Buyer beware when they ask for full payment prior to installation starting. I would highly recommend you research other options.

This was an awful experience. My apartment flooded and the building was evacuated the day before installation. I called the company to reschedule, and they were not sympathetic. I lived in a hotel for a month! Nevertheless, they charged me a fee for rescheduling - but said they would waive the fee if I wrote a good review for them on Google. I would have written a good review, but when they were finally able to install the closet, they did an terrible job! They actually broke the closet doors! I can't believe their customer service. I would not recommend this company to anyone. Awful customer appreciation and terrible install.

Design associate was nice and didn't pressure me into anything I wasn't looking for. Installation mechanic was running a little late but kept me updated on the job. Overall the closet looks great.

The installer arrived on time to do the work. When he was finished I inspected the cabinet and immediately noticed an extremely strong odor coming from the drawers. When I asked about it the installer said that the smell was from a cleaning solution he had just used to clean the drawers and it would go away in a day or so. However after he left and I started putting my clothes away I noticed that the drawers were full of a dusty substance so there was no way he had cleaned inside them. After weeks went by and the smell did not go away I called Closets By Design and expressed my concerns about the odor which smelled like the formaldehyde from the frogs I had once dissected in a high school science class. Stephanie came to my house to check out the problem and said that she could smell the odor but that she was used to the smell because it smelled like the workshop where the cabinets were made. She agreed to talk with someone back at the office and get back with me. When we talked again she said that the cabinet/drawers must have been made from a new batch of melamine and it would take about six months for the smell (which was out gassing of formaldehyde) to go away. She also said that they could make cedar insets to go in the drawers to mask the smell and if that did not work they could try covering the exposed particle board on the bottom of the drawers to see if that helped. I chose to wait it out hoping that the smell would go away. I tried many things to solve the problem like using baking soda in the drawers to absorb the smell, leaving the drawers outside in the sun every day that I could and storing them in my basement until six months had gone by. Nothing worked. When I tried storing my clothes in the cabinet they soaked up the smell and I had to wash them before they could be worn. The smell gave me headaches and caused irritation of my eyes and throat. Finally I decided to have a formaldehyde test done and results showed that after more than six months the levels in the cabinet were still elevated. I called Closets by Design again and talked to Claire. I explained the problem and asked her to have Stephanie call me. I told her that I wanted them to remove the cabinets. She said that Stephanie would call. It never happened. What should have been a positive experience of getting a new cabinet for my closet turned out to be a major headache in more ways than one. For anyone wanting to have a closet system or cabinet installed be sure to ask about the materials used by the company before you make a purchase. Make sure they use materials that do not reek of formaldehyde. To deal with my problem my husband removed the cabinet from the closet and we will be replacing it with a quality cabinet built with environmentally safe materials.

It was a great experience! First Kathy, the designer, came over to talk about what we needed. She was terrific! She worked within our budget and helped us design a layout that would make the best use of the space and what we needed. She was so knowledgeable about the options, what would work for us and how to keep it in our budget. We set up a time for the install. Brett came as scheduled a couple weeks later and went to work. He did an amazing job! Our closet has lots of odd angles and he installed everything beautifully! The finished work was perfect, better than we expected & he left the room clean & ready for us to move our things in. We couldn't be happier with this whole experience & we highly recommend them!!!

Closets by design installed three closets in our house. They initially estimated that the work will take 2 business days but they finished the entire project in an 8 hour window, cleaned up after themselves and now we have beautiful closets. I would certainly recommend Closets by design.

The products could have been better. Their viewing area was very limited. You couldn't really see what the product was like.

Design consultant was uncomfortably pushy and wouldn't accept "no" on the spot after me stating several times I wasn't going to make a decision that day. Follow up calls and texts were too aggressive and too frequent.

They were very professional and provided us with excellent service. We are very pleased with the quality of the cabinets.

I loved Judith's design- she took the time to study my daughter's closet and designed a great closet. It is perfect. It is so well organized for shoes, belts, clothes. I love that we can adjust the shelves and the hanging rods. Judith then designed a storage solution for our golf clubs and gear for the garage. She listened to what I had in mind. The 2 installers arrived on time, were very professional and did a great job on the installation. I highly recommend Judith and Closets by Design.

The sales agent as well as the installers were timely and professional. The company provided a broad price point range. There was a good range in the types of material to select from as well.

Karen helped me design a piece that would work for my space and storage needs. She came out and measured, showed me samples and gave suggestions, and then provided me with a sketch of the final design. They built my unit and after about 4 weeks, came out and installed it. The installation was an all-day project, but it was interesting to watch it all come together. They use particle board, but it seems to be industrial grade and it works well. They worked with me on the price to keep it within my established budget, and I am quite pleased with the finished product. My only complaint is that the installer forgot to drill a hole for my TV wires to go through (he says I did not ask him to do that, but common sense would dictate a required hole to plug in the TV. Anyway, when I asked him to return to provide the hole, I had to argue to get him to do it without charging me another $75 trip fee. He finally agreed, but I just went and bought a drill bit and drilled the hole myself. All is well.
