Wanted to mention that Based on reputation and neighbor recommendations, I opted to let them proceed while I was out of town. Between my ring doorbell camera and the texts with pictures I was able to follow the project from removal to form installation, pouring and finishing. Got back in town to a professionally finished job. Well done!

Overall, it was a seamless and smooth situation. I do feel that the project was dragged out a bit too long (not due to weather). But, we are happy with the quality and it was relatively painless. We hope to not need their services again for many years! But, will recommend them to friends and neighbors. The only issues were with communication and the brick layers. The people who poured the concrete for the walkway (leaving room for pavers) did not measure the bricks - causing the bricklayers to have to cut each brick individually by about a centimeter! It was a painstaking process for them that could have been easily remedied with a ruler. They installed a few bad bricks initially, but with one phone call to Hemma, they sent out people to fix the issue without a problem.

This is a contractor which is difficult to properly rate. There were some positive aspects to my experience, and some equally negative aspects. In addition, I do not have experience with other concrete contractors in the area so cannot do a comparison regarding some of the technical/engineering disappointments, in that I do not know if other contractors would have routinely done better. First off, I would say that the concrete subcontractor the Hemma uses ? Thomas Concrete ? has a top notch product and is one of the reasons I decided to go with Hemma in spite of their less than sterling ratings here. (I also was swayed by their BBB rating of A+, they have been in business under the same name for a long time, and that some of their negative ratings here are by people who seemed to only do negative ratings.) Their pre-sales pitch and material is also very smooth and convincing in its detail. In our multiple pre-sales meetings, they were made fully aware of the fact that one of the main reasons we had decided to go ahead with a new driveway was drainage problems with the existing driveway, which they said was a common reason for replacement and that they could resolve the issues pointed out to them with no problem. Those things said, my total experience was rather shy of completely positive. The key item here is that the new driveway they initially installed had a drainage problem that was much worse than the old driveway. Also of note: the complaints of others of poor responsiveness turned out to be valid for their Project Manager, Frank Diaz. He stopped answering calls when the going got rough. However, my experience with their Operations Manager, Jeff Hardman, was rather better. He did reliably respond to my questions and concerns. See below for more detail on these. Obviously I cannot comment on their honoring their warranty at this point. Their quote gave a price that was not the cheapest, but was in the ball park of others and we were not looking for the least expensive, but rather the best value that would solve our problems from a reliable contractor. Their pre-sales gave me the feeling of confidence that they would do this. On the day they said they would arrive to start work, they said they would be there at 7:30AM; they did not arrive until after 9AM., which we were told was because of equipment problems (Bobcat broken oil line). These things happen. Where it started to go wrong was the dumptruck with the underlay material arrived at 10AM while they were just getting underway removing the old driveway. So they have to clear a place for the gravel to be dumped, which happened to be in the area of the drainage problem. I suspect this was the origin of the failure to correct the drainage. (I have photos of the issue.) The workers also told me that they could not do the front door step and approach walkway as had been planned because the ground was too high. In reality, the issue was they had not prepared the area properly, and when I said that no pour would happen with the present setup, the Project Manager returned and with the workers corrected is, so that it would be as originally described and planned. I wonder why would I even need to engage them on this. On the positive side, the shape and location of the new front walkway were very well done. My takeaway is that I do not know if the Project Manager is just overstretched, or otherwise inattentive for some reason, but this and the too early gravel delivery are just poor project management. In addition, the project manager also gets low grades on engineering understanding and skill. I do not fault the original work crew at all. The driveway was completed and we were in the concrete curing stage when a rainstorm came. Ouch! The water from the ?corrected? part of the driveway just flooded over the existing brick wall and into an area that would then seep into our basement. This was what was precisely supposed to have been fixed! So began the effort at resolution. We stopped payment on the check I had mailed in good faith since the appearance of the driveway was very good, even though the work was not finished. (Never again will I make this mistake.) You'll have to decide if they would have responded as they did if we had not done this or the check had already cleared. Their operations manager, Jeff, contacted of us and came out to go over the problem with us. He offered three solutions, two of which really would have been makeshift, so we opted for the third. While this solution did not make drainage flow on the complete driveway the way I feel a well engineered driveway would be, it did fully solve the immediate problem of where the water runoff went. That said, on this one item, I am satisfied with my dealings with Jeff in resolving this, and he continued to respond to and answer issues that came up. The unfortunate final touch was just as I was starting to feel a little better about Hemma, we ended on this note. The removal of 4 panels of the newly made driveway, regrading and a second pour all went well enough. (Slight mismatch in color on the re-pour.) They said they would be back in a week to finish up. I Emailed Frank and said please do not come on the next Wednesday since we would not be here and would he please give us at least 12 hours notice on when they would show up. Yes, you guessed it:: Wednesday they showed up unannounced mid-day. We just happened to have gotten back here. Since then, no note of explanation or apology. Moreover, the workers (different team than installed the driveway) ran their concrete saws with the garage door open; what a mess the clouds of concrete dust made of the garage and car. Would I recommend Hemma to someone? Probably not. Would I tell someone to avoid them at all costs? Also probably not. But I would get more detail written into the quote and I would supervise them very closely, which might be hard to do if you are not retired as I am, especially given their reliability on dates and times. But whatever else is true, take pictures as the work progresses. I will return to this to report their warranty performance should that be needed, but so far, so good.

Awful experience with Hemma Concrete. No professionalism and not dependable.
Description of Work: My wife and I called Hemma Concrete and talked to Reginald Cook. He first was very nice and was willing to do what he called a small job as a favor to my father-in-law who had a large job for him that he completed. Reginald Cook made a verbal contract with my wife to do our job at our home. We had to work with Frank Diaz as the project manager. Frank would tell us that we were scheduled to get our job done and he would call us. However, he would never call us. After several times, I called Reginald back. Reginald keep talking about that he was doing us a favor and that we needed to be patient with the timing. It was already approaching four weeks. To make a long story short, Reginald Cook got made because I was calling out the unprofessionalism of his staff and company that he told me he was not going to do our job and good luck with it. He hung up the phone. I do not recommend this company at all! When some tells you that they will do something or call you, I expect them to do it. I don't believe it is too much to ask. Unprofessionalism and no dependability. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY In response to Reginald Cooks comments, this customer did not degrade his employee. Frank Diaz would tell me he was going to call me on a certain day and I would never receive a phone. I waited days later and then I would call Frank Diaz who was the project manager. I only spoke of what actually occurred. I believe that I was very patient with Reg Cook and Frank Diaz. When we first called to when the verbal contract ended by Frank Cook, it was a month and one week. I believe that anyone would say that I was very patient. The unprofessionalism of Hemma speaks for itself. Please use your own judgement when it comes selecting Hemma for your projects. A company does not get a B rating on Angie's List if it does not have issues.

Response from Hemma Concrete Inc
Quite honestly, this review is close to the truth. We certainly learned our lesson not to try and help folks out whose projects are well below our minimum amount (this was a 200SF patio job, our projects average 2,000SF). Especially during the rainy season here in Atlanta! But when someone degrades my employees in the manner that this client responded, I will not tolerate it. When I told this client he needed to be patient for us to help out, I meant what I said. For every single review like this one Hemma Concrete can produce literally hundreds of very positive reviews. We have the most talented and seasoned team of professionals in what is one of the most challenging service areas of homeowner construction projects. This won't happen again. Sincerely, Reg Cook

No issues with Hemma. Did a great job, nice people, always on time.
Description of Work: Hemma took out my old, cracked driveway, removed debris which had been buried underneath it when the house was constructed, filled back the pits with clean fill, and put in a beautiful new concrete driveway. It is the nicest looking driveway on my street. Beautiful detailed edging that was included in the cost. They also replaced the walk to the front porch and steps there. They were always on time and kept me informed of the mounting cost as the work progressed. They were not the cheapest of the estimates I received but the quality of the job is unsurpassed. Neighbors up the street had their driveway replaced about a year before I did mine. They used a different company - driveway doesn't look as professional as mine and is already crumbling at the junction with the street.

They were just going to repave a part of our drive, but we found that it was being undermined by construction debris. They removed 2 dumpster loads of stumps, drywall, and other construction leftovers. Then they repaved a much bigger area. We would have had the same problem, if they had not taken care of it.

We had Hemma put in a driveway, and it cracked within 6 months. Their answer-read the fine print in the contract. Our bad-never thought we would be dealing with an obvious crack within less than six months! When we emailed the Residential General Manager, Lee Roberts, with pictures of the crack attached, he told us " I am forwarding your email to Jeff Hardman as he handles all of our warranty issues. On the surface it does not seem to be a warrantable crack at this time. In keeping with industry standards, our warranty provides for warranties on cracks that are 3/8" wide or wider." No one ever called back or came out to see the actual crack. Fortunately, the crack is in a very obvious place at the end of the driveway, near the sidewalk. When our neighbors walk by and ask us what happened to our drive way(and they have),and who put it in, we tell them "Hemma, and it cracked in less than six months!"

I was impressed with their pre-sale communication and the work they did was astounding. The new patio does add a bit of bling to our backyard. The ONLY issue I have is that about two years afterwards, some of the finish appeared to be flaking. It wasn't the concrete but the dye used in the stamping process. Hemma called to do a follow up, and I mentioned the flaking. They promised to send someone out to look at it, but I never heard back. I called again and asked for a status, and they never replied. I don't know why they dropped the ball. The flaking has not continued, and it's only in a few spots. So the otherwise dark brown concrete appears light tan in a few spots. I just wish I knew what was going on and whether or not it could be easily corrected. I would likely use them again, but that item would come up during the discussions, and I would expect an answer before moving forward.

I was very happy until I began to have problems covered under warranty, as confirmed by Hemma. At the end of my driveway, Hemma tore up part of the asphalt street. They patched the asphalt but it did not hold up. It took MANY telephone calls but the job was not repaired for over 6 months. It has not held up and I dread starting the process again to have them repair it. It was not really the amount of time it took for the repairs to be made -- what was so frustrating was that the office contact, Barbara Cogen, stopped answering my phone calls; I was always transferred over to her voicemail. And, of course, she stopped returning my calls. Finally one day after I left ANOTHER message for her, I immediately called Ms. Cogen using a friend's telephone and she answered the phone -- so I was quite convinced that she was avoiding me. Also, shortly after the driveway and sidewalk were done, the on-site project manager, Frank Diaz, stopped by my house. He took note of several insignificant items that were to be corrected but no one ever contacted me about them and I never complained about this. I have recommended Hemma to neighbors and Hemma was given a job by two neighbors with adjoining driveways. The job cost roughly $25,000. They have had issues and, to my knowledge, have not gotten satisfactory answers or correction of their problems. No, I cannot use Hemma again, despite the fact that they did a very good job initially. Their customer service stinks and the warranty is barely worth the paper it is written on. Not to mention that I so regret having recommended them to anyone.

I contacted Hemma in early December 2013 for an estimate on a driveway replacement. Lee Roberts came out and measured and within a few days e-mailed a proposal. The price quoted was excellent and the reviews I read indicated that they did quality work, so I called and was put on the schedule. Note the proposal did not include the square footage, only a price. The work was scheduled to begin on January 16. On January 14, more than a month after the original proposal and two days before the work was to begin,Hemma came back and "remeasured" claiming the original measurements were inaccurate, and they would call back with a new price. On January 15, the day before the work was to start, Hemma called and told me the revised measurements would cause the price to increase over $4000. The new price was now over $2000 above any of my other estimates from equally qualified companies.. When I called the office to cancel, Hemma made no attempt to offer any kind of apology. It was as if the didn't care at all. I wasted over a month dealing with Hemma and delayed a landscaping project. I question how a supposedly ethical company could use a defective wheel as they stated and not notice it for over a month. Can you say bait and switch?

It wasn't the greatest job. The salesman who sold us the job was fabulous - he was the owner. Come to find out, he sent his out of work father in law to do the work. Once the work was started, the salesman was no where to be found. The salesman was very knowledgeable, but the father in law didn't know what he was doing. The concrete has low spots that hold rain. We told them that we wanted this for a wheelchair, and at the last minute, they put in a step in. When we complained, they had to go buy a bag of concrete - which didn't match the rest of the work. We'd never use them again.

When I got the estimate, I assumed that the curb was part of the driveway but found out later that it was not. To replace the curb cost an additional $300. The free PVC conduit for sprinkler, phone or internet was laid approximately 10 from the street across the full width of the driveway. I did not notice that they had butted the PVC cap up against my water meter. The water meter is only 2.5 inches from the driveway thus making it almost impossible to use the conduit if I ever needed to. I am quite pleased with the driveway. It looks great and Hemma did a fantastic job except for the PVC conduit.
Description of Work: Hemma removed my old driveway and front sidewalk. They excavated an area under the old drive which had contained a sinkhole. This area was then filled with crushed stone. The new driveway and sidewalk were framed and the surface prepared and the concrete was poured and finished.

I couldn't be happier -- they did a tremendous job with everything. We get compliments on the retaining walls all the time. They demolished the old sidewalk and driveway and poured new concrete. The workers were prompt, quiet and courteous. When we discovered one of the blocks in the wall (about 3 blocks down) was misshapen and I called them, they were out the next day and took the blocks apart, replaced the defective one and put the blocks back in place. I would heartily recommend them to anyone.
