They were an hour late to begin with. I would advise you to be assertive if you decide to use this company. He did solve some problems that I had with our air intakes. Within a few weeks, the air conditioning quit and I had a heck of a time getting them to come out to look at it or fix it. I also had some other problems with this unit and they did not get back to me for resolution. Make sure that you know where they are placing the central air unit, so you don't have to pay an extra $400 to have it moved to where you want it.
Description of Work: I had them install a new furnace and central air unit for my 2000 square foot house.

The plumber finally arrived and he had an attitude from the start. The plumber was not prepared to dig nor did he have anything to locate the underground pipe with. He said he needed to call someone with a camera to find the problem. I asked if he had called them; he said he would call them after he finished. WHY he couldn't call at that point, I don't know. He quoted me $225 to fix the broken pipe. I agreed and he said he had to go to the store for parts. I didn't realize that a broken pipe was such a rarity and I always assumed most plumbers had the basic equipment for making such a repair-on their truck. The guy finally returned and finished. He gave me a bill for $265, not the quoted $225. I asked why the difference and he said it was because of the parts. I didn't argue. The guy told me someone would arrive later with a camera to help me with the separate, backup problem. I had a bad feeling after that and called the company to cancel. Will not recommend or use them again.
Description of Work: I was told by a friend to call these people and request a plumber named Carlos. I had a serious backup problem in the master bathroom and I warned them that I had another plumber (from another company) out here previously who had run 225 feet of snake into the toilet with no positive results. I told them that my problem probably wasn't going to be solved by another snake down the toilet. They scheduled and re-scheduled due to misjudging Carlos' work load; After the third day, they called and asked if they could send someone else. I reluctantly agreed and while waiting for the guy to arrive, a pipe under my deck burst due to the previous night's freeze.

I am actually one step from calling the BBB on them. I am trying not to let the frustration come to me, but it is hard. Everything went fine with the work; it was more of a customer service problem. The problem really is still not even fixed. We paid all this money and it is like pulling teeth to get someone to return a phone call for me. I keep leaving messages and no one is calling me back. John is the service manager and he is the one who is supposed to call me back. I know what the problem is; I just need someone out here to fix it. It is 104 degree weather and everyday matters when you have got little ones. I am getting slightly frustrated. It really is not brain surgery; I just need someone to return a phone call.

The unit itself is good but there was a problem with engineering and installation and follow up after the sale. The unit does not cool the house. We only get a 10 degree differential between the outside and inside temperature and the industry standards are a 20 degree differential. I have had 14 service calls since installation on 7/4. The last time, the tech told me that my house had too many windows.

I was generally pleased with the job but did have one minor discrepancy. When I set this up, they agreed to come out and clean the ducts, before starting the job. However, their crew came out were not prepared to clean the ducts. They wanted to start the rest of the job. I called and complained and they did do it the way they had first promised. The system is working fine but there was a problem with some of the duct wrapping coming off. I would probably consider them again, but would shop around a bit too.

I think that Universal gave me the best price quote I could get. The first crew of people who arrived to my home had kind of a bad attitude. I think they had an attitude about doing the work because my condominium is about 100 years old. I think that they really did not want to put much effort in the job. However the second crew that arrived was a whole group of new people who did not complain at all. They came in and got the job done. Overall I was very happy with the quality and their responsiveness minus the small issue I had with the first crew.

In 2005, I originally called the company to get an estimate for a whole-house dehumidifier. Rick Ducharme came out and high-pressure sold me on a new A/C instead. He did not give me any education on what type of A/C to buy, the energy efficiency, or choices I have with them. Instead, he kept telling me that I had a wrong sized unit that should be replaced with a newer heatpump. I decided to buy one since I would get a $300 tax credit. The rest of the ducts located deep in the crawlspace were not covered, but I wish they had inspected and covered as they had many holes to be covered. Just recently (July 2007), I found that one side of the A/C had a 18" x 24" cut and then discreetly covered with aluminum tape, and the whole unit wrapped in insulation. The whole revealed itself after 2 years. The company came out to fix, cautioning that the installation warrantee period has lapsed and possibly get charged for labor. They determined that it was covered, and did not charge me.
Description of Work: in 2005, 15+ yr old gas furnace and A/C was replaced with a 4-ton unit gas heat pump for my 2200 sq. ft. ranch house built in 1966. old metal duct work not in garage was replaced with new flexible, insulated duct work. existing duct work that was easily accessible was covered with insulation. old A/C and furnace and old ducts were hauled off. Work took all day from 8:30 to 4:30 using 2 crewmen and foreman. New programmable thermostat was installed which had 12 time periods, and foreman explained features. It seemed that some shortcuts were taken when insulating ductwork.

A Trane air conditioning salesman at Home Depot said a Trane engineer would come out and design a system and give us a quote at no charge to supply and install a new system. Rick Ducharme with Universal Heating & Cooling came out and spent about 30 minutes walking around looking at the existing system and ducts. He asked no questions and expressed no concern about the amount and type of windows, doors, insulation, etc. He then quoted $5,452.00 for the system. We told him we would like to think about it. He then stated that he needed an answer right then - that the price would be an additional $681.00 if we waited. We felt that this was in no way a "free estimate" as advertised, that it was in fact a high pressure sales pitch. We decided not to do business with Universal through Home Depot.

MISERABLE! Not only did the "plumber" not know how to fix the diverter, he took the valve apart and then couldn't figure out how to put it back together, so he left us with a worse leak than before he came! He also lied to us about the water pressure in our home, saying that it was too high but refusing to show us his gauge. When we got our own gauge, it was not over the limit. Do not call Rescue Rooter, they are completely incompetent. The only plus side: we only had to pay the home warranty fee.

The installers were so late that I had to leave to go to work, at least two hours. I was going to go with another vendor, but they assured me this sort of thing never happens and gave a slight monetary incentive. The second set of installers were on time, but they damaged the wall in our hallway and left the carpet filthy and didn't say a word about it. They also did an unprofessional job installing the water heater. One of the copper pipes was patched together in a zigzag shape because they didn't have the correct parts. This was the first thing you could see entering the house thru the garage. They would not return phone calls until I had the bank threaten to do a charge back. It took two other trips to get it ''right.'' I use that term loosely. They promised a 6 month automatic maintenance call. It has been a year and no maintenance call.

This was my 4th bid and end of the month. VP Sales was training a new sales guy. After the summer, both the heater and AC were still working, but on their last leg. I learned a lot from the 4 guys, some was conflicting sales opinions. Carrier bid without 5 inch filter, $6100 Lennox verbal bid from owner without 5 inch filter $6500 (today only), somehow under impression AC was broken. Other Trane installer bid for same system no 5 inch filter $6300. The sales process was easy. The install was near perfect. These guys really made it a perfect install. It looked great! They put the heater on a box, which gave it more room from the return and another right angle. Did I say this is much quieter? Well, it must be 70% quieter. My TV room is right next to the HVAC and return. Oh, they forgot to relight water heater, but came back at 9 that night. They guys had a trailer at Home Depot and their display looked the same as my finished product. Would highly recommend!!
Description of Work: Replaced 2 ton 1985 Carrer AC/2 ton 19 SER multi-speed Trane AC and a 1996 Goodman 80% efficiant Heater/80% Trane Heater. Added 5 inch filter.

Heat Pump and Air Conditioner over sold by at least 3 times what was needed with the result that we have almost no dehumidification in the summer as the Air Conditioner dosen't run long enough. The duct work was very sloppy and 1 outlet was not installed until after the Air Conditioner was replaced. This was done instead of refunding $712.37 for labor to replace the Air Conditioner and it dosen't provide the required air to the room it is installed in. The reason the Air Conditioner burned out is they didn't use the proper size wire to it. When they replaced the Air Conditioner they reran a new larger wire to it but ran this wire OUTSIDE the house!!!

1. The 19 SEER is a two compressor A/C unit, Trane states in their manual the small compressor cannot ''push'' the freon beyond 25' in elevation. My attic unit was beyond that limit so this unit would have burned out on a regular basis. 2. The 19 SEER unit used different freon from the old units and it would be difficult to ''vacuum'' out all of the residual freon. 3. Charts showed the 4 ton unit of the 19 SEER compressor (A/C) was actually only equal to 16.5 SEER in the 4 ton model. When compared to the cheaper 15.5 SEER, the cost difference to operate was only about $25 per year, 4. Because the 19 SEER A/Cs only come in 1 ton increments, I was paying for a larger unit which was not needed nor recommended as most HVAC people will tell you that buying a ''larger than needed'' unit will result in the unit being on for a shorter period of time, thus, it will not pull the humidity out of the air.
Description of Work: Had a 3.5 and a 4 ton Trane HVAC unit installed to replace two 16 year old units. The installation took two days and the two installers did a meticulous job. I am totally pleased and extremely satisfied. By getting hooked up with Universal H&AC I saved $5000 over the other bids which were for high priced equipment which did not make sense on a cost per year basis (as shown by Danny Dominey of Universal HVAC). One dealers bid was interested only in pushing the high-end Lennox system, which other forums suggest it is hard to obtain parts for. Another dealer wanted to sell me the high end 19 SEER Trane units - I needed two HVAC systems for my home - so this was going to be an expensive investment. When Universal's rep (Danny) came out, he then pointed out the following deficiencies with the other Trane bid (please see ''comments'' section)
