We contacted SGLC and Tina arrived on time for the initial assessment. She proposed a solution we liked and we scheduled the job for the end of Nov. A few days later I was supposed to meet with Danny to clear up any details and mark the exact spot for the concrete pad but traffic and work got the best of me so I could not. In retrospect, the misunderstanding below is partly my fault. Due to inclement weather and rainy days we could not commence on time and we eventually had Dec 4 as the date. I was not in when the workers did the job so when I came home that night I found a few things not the way I was expecting them to be (grade was not high enough next to stairs, pipe was not routed onto street level but in a small pop-up valve in the grass, and a few other small things). I texted Danny and sent him pics and on the next day stayed at home for an hour. We finally met with Danny and I showed him what I was expecting. He said with a smile: and quot;No problem, we'll get it done.and quot; And when I came home on the 5th, all was the way it was supposed to be. We are very happy with the quick work, the price and the solution we were given and would happily recommend SGLC to all of our friends and family members. Thanks Tina, Danny and Renand eacute;e!
Description of Work: Connect two downspouts underground and route them under concrete sidewalk and onto street level. Install 3x4 foot concrete pad for a future project. Pour concrete and route water over it (was draining underground and causing erosion issues). Install sod on side of house to raise grade. Install sod on side of stairs to raise grade and create a gravitational drainage.

The company did everything it said it would. There were a few problems encountered along the way, but Tina Cook creatively adjusted the plan to accommodate and solve every problem that arose. I highly recommend Shady Grove Landscaping Company. In fact, I have engaged them this week to add an expansion to the existing installation.

The walkways were beautifully done and they held up great. They are a great design. The front porch railings are fine. They did a great job executing the project. They planned in small portions. As the plants were placed and matured, they didn't do well where were placed. However, they were delightful to work with and we really liked them a lot. They did everything on time and exactly as proposed. It just simply didn't work. We spent a lot of time re-transplanting. The bottom line is that we invested a good bit of money in the project and we really do not think we got our monies worth. I would recommend them, but only with reservation.
Description of Work: I hired them for landscaping. They also did the railings on our front porch and the walkways to our porch.

Unprofessional.....we would NEVER use this company again. I chose Shady Grove because of Tina's friendly and easygoing demeanor. She also seemed to understand what we were looking for and claimed that there would be some degree of flexibility as the project progressed. As it turned out, dealing with Tina was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Initially, she agreed to do a rough drawing of the work we discussed, but every time I asked for it she kept saying that a and quot;to scaleand quot; detailed drawing would cost @$600.00. At least 5 or more times I reminded her that a pencil sketch is all we needed and she had agreed to do this. We never did get it. When the work on the walkway began, my husband noticed that they weren't using grade stakes for proper placement of the steps at even intervals. Our yard slopes some and I wanted the walkway done this way to make it as safe and easy as possible for our aging parents to get up to the house. We ended up with 3 steps placed at random intervals, then 5 steps of varying depths bunched close together at the top (EXACTLY what I DID NOT WANT! and Tina knew this from the beginning) all this because they didn't measure the grade of the slope. When they were building the top steps, I called Tina to tell her that it wasn't right and neither were the pavers added to trim the front of each step instead of using all flagstone ($ saver?). We had requested pavers only along the outer edge of the walkway (in a grayish or gold hue, we got pink). Her response to my concerns was rude and astonishingly unprofessional; she went off about the cost of materials and and that she'd done everything she could to please us and and quot;what more did we want from her?and quot; Her demeanor was so unlike anything I'd experienced from her before, it was very disturbing. She also claimed the pavers on the steps were necessary for stability or something (never mentioned it before). This wasn't true, I have seen plenty of flagstone steps and none look quite as spasmodic as ours. So, now I have uneven steps that are part flagstone and part pavers. The 5 top steps are of differing depths, so the pavers on these steps is strangely out of proportion with the amount of flagstone, it feels like an optical illusion. You have to be careful when going down, because it feels like you may and quot;trip downand quot; the stairs, thus, defeating the purpose of creating a safer and more attractive walkway. The walk was also supposed to end in a flare shape at the top to make a smooth transition into the rounded landing. Instead it was cut at a sharp angle (obviously a faster, easier method). In addition, the bottom step leading up to my front porch was removed (I guess because they and quot;thoughtand quot; that's where they'd level the landing). Well, the height of the landing came up a bit short. So, instead of rebuilding the wooden step as it was, they rebuilt the one step out of pavers which just looks out of place. The whole thing looks odd from just about any angle you view it. Finally, with the ok from Danny Cook and the crew, we used 5 or 6 of the flagstones (some were out of the dumpster) in a spot where water was pooling making it muddy and slippery......Tina smugly told us and quot;she could quote us a price for thatand quot;! These are materials we already purchased! The entire area around the driveway was supposed to be prepped, shaped and mulched. This wasn't done at all nor did we get any plantings or edging for any of the beds. Also, two large Magnolia trees and some Holly's were supposed to be trimmed. That work was not done either. As a bonus, they left a nice big crack in our driveway from the dumpster. The tree removal company did excellent work, very professional. Danny and the crew were pleasant and amenable, and I suspect would have made it right, but it seemed Tina called the shots. We should have dealt with it at the time to reach a satisfactory resolution, but she was not going to budge and we weren't ready to deal with a civil court case. Long story longer, get an itemized quote with details, details, details.
Description of Work: We had extensive work done in our front yard in 2008, including tree removal, a new flagstone walkway, Zoysia sod, preparation & mulching of plant beds with some limited plantings and edging. The original walkway was poured concrete. Since our yard slopes slightly, we wanted the new walk designed to be safer for our aging parents as well as have curb appeal. The area surrounding the driveway was supposed to be included , but it never got done.

Following you will find the series of emails followed by the original proposal for the member's project. Shady Grove Landscape Company does not understand why the memberwould leave such an ugly report of our company. We do not remember charging for a design, although that is common in our industry. You will read in our email exchange followed by an extremely detailed proposal, that we certainly did listen to her requests and actually developed a positive working relationship. We apologize for any part we may have had in causing her to have ill will toward us and wish she and her family the best. First email from the member: We have a wooden patio that is a few inches to a few feet off the ground. I want it removed a replaced with a patio. My ninety year old father lives with us and enjoys being outside as much as possible. Any steps down to the patio will need to be wide because he has vision problems. We also need to have our driveway lengthened and a retaining wall extended. Finally our backyard is small, not level, with drainage problems. I am writing this report in answer to your request of many months ago. I have waited a long time to share my opinion of Shady Grove Landscape Company with Angie's List. I wanted to be as fair as I could and have some of the negative feelings dissipate, so I could get a clear picture of just what I wanted to say without emotion playing a part. Late in 2008 I started a big landscape project at my home in Johns Creek, to be accomplished in several phases. This, in conjunction with a major remodel of the house. The design was very nice - It was going to be VERY expensive, but, I felt they were committed to making this a priority job, and were capable. Everything went well for the first phase. Things seemed to progress in a timely fashion - the design called for extensive construction work. An ambitious project to be sure. I didn't speak with anyone that they had done work for - I'm not sure they had ever done a job this extensive. The real problems began at the end of the phase that included the new sod in the back. The irrigation system that they installed was on a timer and was assumed to be functioning properly. They had embarked on another project at that time - knowing the final phase of my job would not resume for several months due to more general construction that had to be completed prior to the finish of the entire job. We experienced serious flooding of the property in the natural area as well as the sodded areas - something was VERY wrong! After repeated calls, conversations and cries for help......NOTHING was addressed or fixed! We endured this BIG mess for at least six weeks. When they finally got out here and found the problem - which of course, were leaks, the extensive damage was done. The sod was ruined - many plants died and as time has gone on, we are continuing to see the real damage that this negligence has caused. The water bill was HUGE! Apologies were made - after all, we had another phase to be done. And the promise of replacement of the sod and other plantings was made albeit with a very unprofessional attitude. All this could not even be planned till the following spring causing us to go through the entire fall and winter without any resolution and a back yard with a big ugly mold problem and was a serious and ldquo;mud-pitand rdquo;. Great, when you have several large dogs. Well, the same problem occurred a second time - this time Shady Grove sent another contractor out to address the problem. They fixed it. It remains fixed. From that time to this, we have not heard from anyone at Shady Grove. The last phase, being done before the sod was replaced, was completely unacceptable with Mrs. Cook exhibiting unprofessional and irrational behavior. Once the majority of the work was done, and most of the money was paid, they definitely lost interest in this project. Mistakes were made that resulted in costing a lot to rectify, as we had to hire other contractors to finish the work. Much had to be taken out and redone. I realize now that portions of their work were sub-standard, as we are seeing problems with other areas, including brick and stone work. We are hoping that they don't turn out to be serious and be expensive to repair. I spent $195,000.00 with them and another $12,000.00 to finish their part of the job. This does not include the replacement of the trees and plants that were killed during all of this. It has not been done yet - really, you can't replace a beautiful old Dogwood that was the focal point of the back yard now, can you? We are working with another landscape company, trying to salvage the sod and other plantings. Shady Grove proudly advertise this job as theirs, saying how happy I am with their job and other inaccuracies. It certainly is a stretch. To summarize, the design was VERY nice - I wish now I had not been as trusting and willing to let them have carte blanche. If I had more knowledgeable people on my team to stay on top of it all, it would not have been such a disappointing experience.
Description of Work: I had a large landscaping/hardscaping project that needed done.

This member is the one of the nicest, kindest most considerate clients we have ever had the pleasure to work for. We enjoyed a wonderful two year relationship and she gave us creative license to makeover her property. We were honored and inspired by her trust and are still incredibly proud of the work that we did there. Shady Grove won an Award of Distinction from the Metro Atlanta Landscape and Turf Association for our efforts. To date, the member is the only client that we have knowing left unhappy and we still feel terrible about it. After two years of working closely together, the relationship fell apart. Perhaps we were too close. We absolutely accept our part of the blame for the sad ending. Please note that the member received everything that she paid for. We left with the contract complete. Also note that we did honor our warranty and replace many trees and plants as well as all of the Zoysia sod in the backyard at our own expense. Again, sincere apologies this member. We still lose sleep over the termination of our relationship and wish you the very best that life has to offer.

They seemed to have the most practical, realistic solution to the problem we had. I was very pleased with the interaction with the company. They did a very good job. We did have some issues afterwards, but they were prompt to come out. What we thought was related to their work was not, but they were still quick to come out and help us identify the problem. I thought they were a bit pricey, but overall I felt it was a very good value. They stood by their work and did solve the drainage problem we had on the side of our house.

After reading other reviews, this was the first and only company I contacted. Tina met with me within days after I called. I told her my budget for the project and within about 20 minutes of discussion she had a good grasp of the situation. She sent me a proposal within a few days. She didn't think she could get to the project until Sept. (this was in July), but everything was completed by mid-August. She and Danny designed a wonderful back yard for me under budget! This company is amazing - very professional, prompt, and creative. After the work was completed, Tina came back to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction and to give advice and answer any questions.
