We recently had a bonus room turned into a bedroom with a bathroom and closet. Michael was quick to provide a full estimate. After we agreed to move forward we never saw him at the job site. He relies heavily on his various crews to do the work with zero over site. They text him pictures as the job progresses. Any issues we had were difficult to resolve due to the fact that he never came to put eyes on the work. His painters, tile installer and over all project lead man are great to work with and they do fabulous work. His plumbers are unprofessional and do a horrible job. The biggest issue we had was after the job was done and $24,000 had been paid Michael starts nickel and diming us for $500. His crew installed an over sized door for the bathroom which completely blocked the toilet. After I told him it did not work for the room he said it was fine and that he had done 100 barhrooms like that. I wasn’t satisfied so I asked him to put two 18” doors in. He said they would be $140. After they were installed (2 weeks later) and all the crews were gone he texts me and says we owe $500 for the doors. He said it was for labor and hardware. I agreed to pay for the doors and the paint and hardware but I felt he should eat the labor due to the fact that his crew installed an incorrect door and because I am the customer and was not satisfied. He disagreed. I paid him but will NEVER recommend him

Response from Hailey's Home Services
I am sorry that this customer felt this way to write a review like this. Especially, considering this is the only problem he had on the entire job that consisted of so much work. First, I would like to mention that I was at the job on multiple occasions and consistently. I also have a main guy that is on the job almost everyday if not everyday. The only guys that I relied on besides my everyday workers are the HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical. It is unfortunate that he had problems with the plumbing company. I have and will address again with the owner his concerns. Second, the reviewers wife requested to change from a barn style door (they were to provide the door and hardware) to a regular bathroom door. She also changed a regular closet door to a pocket door. I charged them for the new bathroom door (mat only since I was only originally providing labor to install a barn door) for the bathroom and painting that door. I didn’t charge them any more for labor. I also didn’t charge them for changing from a regular closet door to a pocket door even though a pocket door requires more material and labor to install including different framing at the beginning of the job. At the end of the job, he notifies me that the bathroom door won’t work due to it blocking full access to the toilet when open. It would require them to go into the bathroom and close behind them to access the full toilet area. I have built multiple bathrooms including my own house where a door opening into a bathroom would hinder complete access to the open toilet area. This is not something I could have foreseen as an issue for this particular customer ahead of time. I offered to only charge him my overall cost for changing out the door. I believe that this was a very fair solution for something that was not necessarily my fault and more of a personal opinion change. I always try to make my customers happy in the end and believe the end result was what the customer was expecting when they hired my company.

Michael came out and took measurements and provided an estimate much lower than two other bids. His workers were on site and completed the work in 2 days and then Michael came out and inspected it. Turned out better than I had even imagined it looking. We still enjoy it three years later.

1. The BIG problem was this. He incorrectly assumed he would be able to put in a studer vent for a sink in the middle of the basement. We ended up having to dig up the floor and run the drain pipe over to the existing vent pipe ($1200 extra beyond quote for 30' trench). They completed that and then the concrete was laid over the trench. If he knew what he was doing he would have realized he needed to A) Let the concrete dry properly - there's a specific moisture reading you can take if you have the correct tool B) Seal it with a special sealer to stop any moisture coming up. The rest of the floor is fine because it's been there... C) Use a special high bonding glue to hold it down properly. He did not do the above and laid engineered hardwood on the floor including over where the trench was dig and fixed. The glue did not hold properly and it felt spongy when you walked on it. I complained and the guy came out on two occasions to fix and it was not resolved. Within 3 months we started noticing water spots on the wood that was over where the trench had been dug. I called again and they came over and ripped it up. There was mold underneath where the moisture had been coming up through the uncured concrete. Crap!! Hailey said this was not his fault and he could not control the moisture coming up through the concrete. we argued with him and he refused to resolve it under his guarantee. At this point we did not trust him. We sort advice from some professional hardware installers and found out the above made points on how it should have been done. Cost us $700 to have resolved and it's been fine since. 2. Part of the deal was a working gas connection for some log's we installed. When we went to hook up the log's we found the gas connection was not hooked into the house gas supply - he gave a lame excuse that he was planning to hook up later. 3. A couple of months after they left we had a hotwater heater go out (upstairs - not Hailey's deal) - I went to shut off the water and the main shutoff no longer worked! It worked fine before his guys did the basement and how it's messed up. It's abit of a problem when you can't shut off the water supply to the house. I called Hailey - he said he would call his plumber - never heard from him.. 4. The way he quotes work leaves is mis-leading. He leaves just enough wiggle room to figure out ways to charge you more when the occasions arises. 5. His commitment to time was lacking. He would promise to show up and then not be there and call later with excuses - this was frustrating...
Description of Work: Hailey finished off our basement for us. There was some extensive work to do... he made some very specific mistakes and then refused to back his work. Work involved all the typical items for a basement completion job. Electrical, framing, sheetrock, plumbing, tile as well as hardwood floors which was his big downfall with us... Bottom line - don't trust this guy. He lacks integrity.

Response from Hailey's Home Services
Hailey Home Services was saddened to read this review because this is the type of customer that falsely gives a contractor a bad name. Hailey's Home Services strives 100% to make sure every customer is happy and we follow through with all commitments indicated by all of our positive reviews on our website, Facebook page Angie’s list, ETC…. On this particular job we secured a city permit and the basement was inspected by the city and certain things were required by the city to be completed a certain way. To address the certain items mentioned in this review, some background that was not mentioned, needs to be mentioned. Upon starting the job, it was discovered by our plumber that the original vent piping for the house was not done to the original code. This caused the inspector to not allow the planned route for venting of the bar sink that was in the middle of the basement. Since that sink is surrounded by concrete walls and below ground, the only option that would allow a sink was to dig a trench to run piping that would allow for correct venting and draining. This was definitely unforeseen by HHS. The homeowner was given the option to move forward with this change order at the mere cost to perform the job so that it would pass the inspection. They agreed and we moved forward. The floor part of the basement was an addition to the original basement estimate and was not performed until the basement was 99% finished. The concrete floor was laid 3-4 weeks (above cure time for concrete) before the wood floor was installed and never showed any sign of moisture. The homeowner had multiple companies come out to estimate the job (all knowing that sections of the floor in the past 3-4 weeks had been laid) and none of them discussed checking for moisture or felt moisture was a concern as it was not mentioned in any estimate. No estimate received by the homeowner included sealing the newly laid concrete. Hailey's Home Services was asked by the homeowner to complete the job based on the combined estimates received at a particular price. The homeowner went to the extreme to say “I believe you have $2000 built into this job in profit, I would like to split that with you” (that offer was not excepted nor appropriate). Hailey's Home Services performed the job exactly the way it was asked to by the homeowner based on the estimates received. Upon Hailey's Home Services being contacted, the floor was repaired within days on two (2) different occasions at no cost to the homeowner (warranty issues). At those repair times, it was believed that the glue, in the repaired sections, was not holding the wood in place. After a third call for a review, it was determined that there was moisture developing under the floor causing the glue to release the wood flooring. It was agreed by the homeowner to remove the damaged area and repair. The option to repair the floor was provided by Hailey's Home Services at cost to ease the burden placed on the homeowner. Under any flooring companies warranty (including the multiple companies that gave estimates to the homeowner), any subgrade moisture is not covered under warranty. The other companies warranties were provided to the homeowner along with Hailey's Home Services’ warranty all stating the same thing. Some companies went as far to write that subgrade moisture or moisture of any kind is not covered multiple times in their warranty. Upon Hailey's Home Services removing the damaged floor, the homeowner contacted Hailey's Home Services threatening the company and stating that they would not pay for this repair. To this date, the homeowner has yet to make payment for the damaged wood that was removed and agreed upon before work began. The homeowner, after the wood was removed, states that they paid $700 for the repair. Hailey's Home Services’ estimate to repair the floor and including removing the damaged floor and disposing of trash was $700. Again, when change orders occur out of control of the homeowner or HHS, Hailey's Home Services offers work to be done at cost. The gas pipe was correctly provided in the original estimate. Upon inspection by the city, the inspector requested that the pipe (for some future use) not be connected to the gas meter until the useable end would be hooked up to a source that needs the gas. He only allowed us to pressurize the pipe to make sure there were no leaks. This was explained to the homeowner and Hailey's Home Services told the homeowner to call at any time in the future to have the gas hooked up to any devise desired at no cost. Hailey's Home Services was contacted through text message between 4-6 am about a hot water heater in their attic leaking. Hailey's Home Services responded asking if our plumber needed to be sent out to help. Hailey's Home Services was contacted back stating that the water was off and nothing was needed. At that point, we were not asked to do anything as a company. When working at the basement, the plumber used the shut off valve at the street (valve that was used by homeowner during leak) when turning the water off to the house to perform any work. The shut off valve inside the house was never touched by anyone associated with Hailey's Home Services and the leak is not associated with Hailey's Home Services as the homeowner states. Hailey's Home Services was always in contact with the husband and never the wife of this household in regards to scheduling. All timing and delays were thoroughly discussed with the husband and performed as discussed and agreed upon. Hailey's Home Services home services strives not to have to go back to the homeowner with a change order unless it is out of our control or a change was made by the homeowner. If a change order is needed in the event of something out of Hailey's Home Services’ control or the homeowners’ control, the change order is given at cost to the homeowner. Hailey's Home Services has an impeccable track record with not issuing change orders for items Hailey's Home Services should have predicted and will be happy to give references at any request. Hailey's Home Services performed multiple extras for this homeowner at no charge to ensure they were kept happy while finishing the basement and after.
