I called for an estimate appointment. I explained what I wanted, sod, fencing and aprox 6 trees. She then explained their process, the owner comes out and goes over what I want takes measurements and the goes back to the office and does a landscape plan. I told her I did not need a landscape plan for a fence, sod, and 6 trees. She said it was mandatory she said the fee was $300+ for the plan. I said thank you but no thank you. I think some flexibility on the landscape plan for SIMPLE jobs would be in order. If I were doing lots of trees and plants and decking or walkways then I could see a plan but it is not needed for sod, a fence and a few trees.

We regret that our business model did not match up with what this client prospect was looking for. Over the years we have made the analogy of what we do to compare our process to building a home. We build landscapes for our clients and home building professionals build homes for their clients. Most home builders would not build a home without a scaled drawing, or plan of the finished product. If the project a home building client prospect wanted was very simple, such as adding a small bar to a kitchen or bookshelf to a living room then the owner could tell the builder the exact measurements of what they wanted and he could give them a rough "estimate" of what it may be depending on materials, accessibility, demolition, and many other factors. If the client prospect could not tell him or her this over the phone then it might require more expertise than the prospect thought initially was needed. This then is where design expertise comes in and is the most valuable part of the process. Having a good plan whether it is simple or complex many times negates unforseen changes once the project begins and even after it is finished and begins to "gracefully age". Examples of where this process of planning ahead may save money in the long run range from grass being installed in areas that are not sunny enough for long term health to trees growing too big for the areas they were planted in. If a simple installation of a small amount of landscaping is all a prospect is after and they have never engaged professional landscape companies before we are glad to give rough ballpark numbers over the phone so that they can gauge their readiness for the work. If a client prospect is familiar with our work, is ready to move forward with us and they have a technically accurate plan of what needs to be done we will certainly set up meetings to accept deposits on the work and schedule it appropriately. We also have the philosophy of helping everyone who calls us by referring folks to key contractors who have a different business model who we have referred prospects to over the years for simple projects that don't require a plan. An example of this might be filling in a sinkhole or removing piles of trash from a property. We regularly refer client prospects who call us knowing that when we do give someone a referral our reputation is on the line and that the client prospect's positive experience with the project is what we want because they called us first. We have found that on 95% of landscape projects beginning with a plan is the best way to begin the journey to a successful project. Many client prospects will take the plan and implement it in phases if that is more comfortable for them and we encourage it knowing that the long range outcome is going to work functionally, aesthetically and financially for the owner. This is how we have been blessed to gain most of our business from referrals through the years by helping folks bring their property to it's potential with long term results in mind.

They charged me the design fee. We had a disagreement what he wanted and what I wanted. He wanted to do what he wanted in versus what I wanted and we couldn't come to an agreement.

Prospect asked to replace turf that died because of too much shade underneath big mature oaks. We suggested a low maintenance alternative that would not have to be mowed on a slope that would be borderline dangerous with any dew or rain on it if it did have grass since it is on a slope. Trees would need to be removed to get the amount of sunlight the turf grass would need to thrive. Removing mature trees in this neighborhood is frowned upon and you must get special permission to remove them from the ARC. Chances are getting permission to remove healthy 24"-30" dbh oaks would be a hard sell to the board that would approve it since they are in a large natural ravine with a stream and natives underneath. Neighbors on either side have same scenario but with less trees which gives them more sunlight. Prospect did not want to cut down trees so we gave them a low maintenance deer resistant and colorful alternative to the replanting of turf that has already died once in this area. This community requires a design for any site improvements and we have submitted many drawings over the years to homeowners in this neighborhood as we did here. Presented with the same set of circumstances we would proceed exactly the same in the future. We give clients choices and let them choose. If in a circumstance such as this the client doesn't want to remove trees we feel like it is irresponsible to suggest something that is going to begin to die in the next year after planting and require high maintenance and be potentially dangerous doing so. Grass will live for a short time in the shade but time has proven over and over again that you need a certain amount of sunlight for it to survive. If you have mature trees and you want turf grass to thrive and not die you will need to cut them down. We don't typically recommend cutting mature trees down to grow turf if client likes lower maintenance and lower water use landscaping but that is what would need to happen in a shady area for grass to thrive.

The owner comes back once a month to follow up to make sure all the plants are doing well and everything is watered properly. They have great attention to detail and worked with me as well as offering fair pricing; we did a huge backyard project. They do our regular weekly maintenance and those prices are competitive as well. I will use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used John Newman of Classic Landscapes to redo my back yard and do my weekly yard maintenance. We completely re-landscaped the back yard including hardscaping which is stone patios and walls. We installed new drainage as well as new plantings. They adjusted our sprinkler system and added lines to our sprinkler system so we could water all of the other new plants correctly.
