We live in East Atlanta and we are preparing for some remodel of our upstairs. We had some heavy pieces we could not bring down to the lower level. We contacted Hewes Family Movers and they were very courteous and professional. They were scheduled for 8am on Saturday moring and were right on time. They completed moving the heavy pieces in a single hour and even moved some other lighter items we had planned to bring down on our own. The gentleman were courteous, professional and took special care of the pieces being moved. We have to move these items back upstairs after the remodel is complete and we definitely plan to use them for that effort also.

Well first of all Bill Hewes came to my house and did a estimate of all my belongings and provided me with a quote. I received 2 prices and Hewes was the best price so I decided based on all the positive responses from Angie's list, to give them a try. The morning of the move I was told by Bill the 4 men and 2 van/trailers would be at our house between 8:00 and 8:30 am. Around 9:10 the men arrived and began to load the 2 trailers. At 2:00 pm it was obvious that Bill had underestimated the amount of furnishing we had and the 2 trailers would not hold all our furnishings. Bill Hewes was notified by his men and it was decided to take both trailers to the new house, unload 1 and return for the remaining items. I waited for 4 hours at the old house until 2 men and the trailer arrived back to load the remaining items. I arrived with the last trailer to the new house at approximately 7:30. Bill Hewes had arrived shortly before to personally help finish up moving the remaining items as well as direct his men to help move the furniture into the rooms we wanted. I was concerned that I would be charged for the 2nd trip back to the old house but Bill Hewes was very sorry for the situation and agreed to hold the price as was quoted. The move was estimated to only take 6 hours but in reality it took 14 hours by the time they left at 11:30 pm. All said, I would recommend Hewes Family movers to all friends and would not hesitate to ask Bill to move me again. All his men were courteous and considerate and took great care of all our furnishings during this short move. Thank you Bill and all your men for taking care of us.
Description of Work: I moved from a 4 bedroom house to a new 4 bedroom house approximately 30 miles away. They moved all my furnishings including all furniture and approximately 115 boxes.

It was a good move. They did a really great job. They were a couple of guys and they came in the morning. It took a little longer than I wanted it to, but everything was in great condition, and they even set up my appliance which lot of people don't do. I don't think they have a warehouse. I thought that their price was good. I would use them again in the future.

We received 5 estimates and Hewes was right in the middle. We went with them because Bill Hewes came out to do our estimate, assured us of his good faith and reputation. He also gave us both a normal estimate and a ?not to exceed" amount on the estimate so we would have some idea what to expect. After checking reviews on Angie?s list, we signed up with Hewes for our move. We did the packing ourselves and were set to move on Wednesday, March 14th. Due to paperwork messed up by our mortgage company, we found out on Tuesday (the day before the move) that we would not be able to close and move on Wednesday. The close was pushed back until Friday the 16th. I immediately called Bill expecting the worst, but he was very accommodating and rescheduled my move to Friday. He did say that 2 trucks and one crew would be tied up on a move on Friday morning, but that they would join the team around lunchtime on Friday. They arrived Friday at 9AM as indicated and began the move at 930AM. The second crew arrived just after 1PM and the move proceeded into the evening. Given the close distance between the homes (7 miles), the movers were able to make a ?first run? to the new place to drop off at around 2PM. The first crew returned about 6PM and the loading and moving continued. The Bill arrived to move our Grandfather clock around 7PM and the final load was done by 10PM. The team worked hard into the late night to finish the unloading and furniture assembly at around 12AM. Our experience was amazing with Bill and his team. They arrived on time, the crew had a great attitude, they worked hard, my wife felt comfortable with them moving our household items, and they were extremely careful. The only broken items was a clay Mexican Fireplace which was probably cracked to begin with. When settling up the bill, Bill came in between the estimate and the not-to-exceed figure, to which were pleasantly surprised given how long they worked on the move. I tipped Bill $100 for his effort and professionalism and would gladly use him again or recommend him to a friend.
Description of Work: Hewes Family Movers moved our household goods from a 5 bedroom home with a finished basement in Cumming, GA to a new home also in Cumming about 7 miles away. Hewes Performed the disassembly, moving, hauling, re-moving, and re-assembly of all items in our home except for good they were prohibited from moving (gasoline cans) and items we preferred to move ourselves (framed pictures).

They are local and regional movers. I used them as they were highly rated on Angie’s List and also as they were references. They were very competitive. They were on time and cared for what they did. They were very careful while on the job. They always wanted to make things right. I would use them again in the future.

It has been over a month since our move and we have had none of our appliances or tv stand repaired or replaced by Hewes Family Movers, nor have we been compensated for the 6 hours spent mopping up water and drying out the floors at the rental house. Bill Hewes has been non-responsive and is making no attempt to resolve this matter. Even though we have paperwork that states we were covered for 100% replacement value of our damaged goods, we have yet to receive anything but aggravation. Even though we are the victims in this situation, Bill Hewes is treating us as if the mistakes were our fault or that this an elaborate scam to get new appliances. Our decision to hire a professional mover instead of moving ourselves was solely driven by the fact that we didn't want anything to happen to our BRAND NEW appliances. We knew they were big, heavy, & awkward, and didn't want to risk damaging them. We chose to go with Hewes Family Movers because they had great reviews and seemed like super nice people. This was a cross town move, so we figured "how much could go wrong?". Well, Bill Hewes answered that for us......pretty much EVERYTHING can go wrong. We understand that mistakes happen, but the amount of mistakes that happened on our move and the subsequent inaction to remedy the situation is inexcusable.
Description of Work: This was the absolute worst experience we have ever had with a moving company. We hired Hewes Family Movers to move our large appliances and some furniture across town to our new house, but the day from start to finish was fraught with damages and mistakes. 1.) Damaged Refrigerator - While struggling to get the fridge out of the house, the crew did significant damage to the doors and sides of our 3 month old Samsung Stainless Steel fridge. I had explained to them exactly how the fridge was brought into the house and suggested it be taken out the same way, but they refused to listen to my suggestion. After TWO HOURS of trying to shove the fridge through a doorway that was too small, they finally tried it the way I suggested......and it worked. Unfortunately though, at that point, the damage had already been done. They also failed to put it completely back together when it arrived at the new house. They left a plastic piece sitting inside the fridge and we have no clue where it came from. 2.) Damaged Washing Machine - While moving the washer, the crew scratched the lid of our 3 month old Maytag Washer. 3.) Cracked Plasma TV Pedestal - When moving our 42" Panasonic Plasma TV, the crew cracked the pedestal stand. 4.) Icemaker water overflow - For some reason the crew had trouble turning off the water to the icemaker for the fridge in the house we were moving out of. Unbeknownst to us, instead of tightening the shut off valves properly, they let the hose leak, which flooded the kitchen and completely soaked the dining room carpet. Luckily we noticed this when we went back to the house to pick up odds and ends. We turned off the valve, mopped the floor, used towels to soak up the carpet, and set up fans, yet the carpet was still drenched on Saturday (the next day) afternoon. We had our walk through with the landlady on Sunday morning, so this meant that we had to spend more hours at the rental trying to dry the carpet before our walkthrough. 5.) Washing machine hose leak - similar to the icemaker, the crew did not properly tighten the shut off valve for the washing machine. When we went back to the house, the laundry area was flooded to the point that it had leaked though the floor and made a lake in the garage below!! Also similar to the icemaker mess, we were able to get it dried up with blow dryers and fans, and presentable prior to our final walk through Sunday morning, but it was added stress and over 6 hours of our time spent drying up water from the Hewes crew's mistakes! 6.) Dented banister - The crew attempted to carry a dresser, with the drawers inside, up the stairs. As they rounded the corner, the drawers spilled out, smacking and gauging our wooden banister. 7.) Gouged Stair - The crew tried to carry a piece that was too heavy for them and let it drop on the top step, making deep cuts in our wooden staircase. 8.) Late arrival: We were expecting a 9:00 arrival, the crew arrived after 9:30. No courtesy phone call that they would be arriving late. 9.) The crew had difficulty lifting and maneuvering most of our items up/down the stairs (mattress, the bedroom set, the washer/dryer, and the refrigerator). All of these items were in the original estimate, as were the stairs, so we're not sure why a crew wasn't sent who could handle this work. 10.) Black grease all over the white doors - The crew removed both the front and side doors in order to get the fridge into the house, and in doing so, got grease from the hinge pins all over our freshly painted white molding and white wood grain doors. It is also worth noting that the crew unnecessarily removed our side door, which was too small for the fridge to fit through, which they would have known had they used common sense and measured first. The crew made no attempt to clean the grease off the doors or trim.

Sent an email to Hewes Services on 02/26/12 outlining my move and asking what needed to be done for a quote. Mr. Hewes replied that same evening saying he would provide an estimate the next day. I have never heard back from him.

Response from Hewes Family Movers
We try so hard to make everyone happy. I hope our other reviews show I am very personally involved making sure we are always doing our best. I felt quite bad to open our email and find we had someone who was not happy with us. On February 26th this potential customer emailed us and I replied the same day that we would get an estimate to her via email in the morning. I now have my brother, daughter, good friend, and his wife helping me with emails and phone calls. Everyone who is a part of this company is so very excited about the growth we are experiencing. We are working so hard to accommodate this growth and maintain the absolute best service in the moving industry. I was able to bring on my son in law and another son late last year as full time employees. Anyway - I forwarded this email request for an estimate to my friend, and as of a few years ago, business partner Chris. He promptly emailed me back an estimate. I goofed and did not send it on to the customer. I don't know how I missed it. Completely my fault. I really wish the customer would have perhaps given us the chance of maybe just one reminder email or other contact. We would have loved the opportunity to make this a great situation for everyone. - Bill Hewes

We looked around for for quality movers. We have had nothing but nightmare moving experiences in the past. We took the plunge with Hewes and crossed our fingers and I must say it was the best ever. The 2 man crew that was sent over worked relentlessly without stopping (except for an off the clock lunch) until the job was done. Their "Better than an estimate" policy is the most unique in the business and is the perfect blend between a FLAT RATE and the vague quotes you get from other movers. If your like me and hate moving because you never know the cost, your worried the crew will be "lazy" or reckless - go with Hewes !!

I called several movers from Angie's List that were highly rated, in my area and specifically advertised "in house move" or "piano moving". Bill Hewes was the most responsive and the best price. One mover had a 2 hour minimum charge, another could not promise a schedule. Bill was able to fit me in between some other jobs in the area, which saved a scheduled move (which cost more). Instead I paid for their gas and labor, which was very reasonable. Bill and his associate showed up on time, and moved the piece with a minimum of effort. Due to steep basement stairs, they carried the piece out the front door, around the back and through an outside door to the basement. No problems, and they were done within 45 minutes. They took pains to remove their shoes and avoid getting mud on the carpets. I would definitely recommend Hewes Family Movers for small jobs, and I would also use them in the future for a larger moving job.
Description of Work: We needed to move a large, heavy piece of furniture from the main level of our house to the basement. I didn't want to spend much money, and I needed it done fairly quickly.

Upon calling Hewes Family Movers to get an estimate for a move, I spoke with owner Bill Hewes. Right away I felt that I was speaking with a professional. Rather than just give you a ball park figure on price, Bill actually comes to your home, or in my case storage facility, to really see what you'll be moving, etc. This way he gives you a more accurate price estimate, and I felt his pricing was reasonable and within market rates. As noted above, my move actually consisted of picking up one large and very heavy dining room table and the chairs from a residence and then picking up the remaining furnishings from 4 storage units at a climate controlled storage facility, with everything being delivered to a 3rd floor apartment, with only stairs, no elevator. Bill and I had discussed the need of 2 or 4 strong individuals because of the 3 flights of stairs and the fact that I had the heavy table and an extra large armoire to get up to the apartment. Ultimately, Bill sent 2 of his guys and they handled everything heavy or not, in a timely and professional manner. They also offered and helped to consolidate some of the items not leaving storage, which allowed me to do away with two of the storage units immediately. Once at the apartment, they again performed their task in a timely manner even though the large armoire did present a problem once it was at the front door because it wouldn't go through the door. They figured out a way to resolve the problem to my satisfaction and the entire move was completed within the scheduled/estimated time, even though at the apartment they practically had to battle freezing wind in the breeze way of the apartment to get everything inside. Overall from begining conversations with the owner to the job being completed it was a positive experience, and I would not hesitate to recommend this company, and will not hesitate to call them for my next move.
Description of Work: The company picked up a large dining room table and chairs at a residence first, then picked up the remaining items from 4 storage units at another location. Everything was then moved to my new 3rd floor apartment, no elevators, just stairs.

I hired Hewes to move a grand piano and the rug underneath from one room to another within our house. I also had them remove some furniture from the house which they took to a donation center. They moved a few pieces around for us inside the house. They were excellent in all respects. I am very pleased with the company and their professionalism. I have used a lot of good moving companies over the years so feel I am a good judge even though we did not do a major house move. I would have no hesitancy in hiring them for a major move. I am sure I will call on them again in the future.

I talked to Bill at Hewes who was very helpful. He sent over 2 young guys (Alan and Thomas.) They were amazing! Completely professional, worked like machines and never slowed down. They followed my instructions and were a pleasure to be around. I hired them for 4 hours and they accomplished more than I would have in 3 days. I had also arranged for them to haul away the boxes and packing materials. That was a huge help. I would definitely recommend them for this kind of service. Their rates were very reasonable.

Two movers arrived on time, and packed everything in the truck in very good time. They took absolute care of everything--there was not a single breakage or scratch in the entire move. At the other end, they made sure that everything was in its right place, nothing was damaged, and that we did not need any further help. They were totally accommodating in every way possible, and made every effort to make a stressful event as easy as possible. They stuck to their quoted price, even though it was a bigger job than we had estimated. I cannot recommend them highly enough!
Description of Work: We provided an inventory of furniture items to be moved from Mobile, AL, to Griffin Ga (~350 miles). We could not specify the exact number of boxes, since we had not packed these yet. They worked up a price without requiring an onsite visit. All correspondence was by email.

The experience was very positive from start to finish. Bill Hewes personally worked with me to develop the estimate and plan the move. (Actual amount paid was a little less than the estimate.) I found them on Angie's List. I selected them because of the good reports. Bill Hewes is the owner. Their price was good and the movers were excellent. It was just a local move, but I was really surprised that they could manage everything in one day. What they do is that they really have a lot of people. Some movers may just have 2 guys pack, but Hewes had full crew come in and pack and full crew help with the moving. It was a quick experience. They were very professional. Their responsiveness and punctuality was good. Their professionalism was excellent. I would use them again in the future if need be.

Saw the reviews here on Angie's List and decided to give them a call. Was one of several I contacted, and while not the least expensive, their prices were certainly competitive and better than others. But what set them apart right from the start was their willingness to give you a hard and fast cap to what the move would cost. Other moving companies pointed out that they would give an estimate based on how long they expected but that if it went longer, I would be paying more. Hewes promised that any time beyond what they estimated would not be passed on to me. Bill Hewes and one of his associates came over to give the estimate, and spelled out in detail the pricing structure. Initially we said we would want them to pack up smaller items - which was priced separately from the actual moving - but in the end decided to do it ourselves (spent about $125 on boxes and tape, saved about $400). The crew of three arrived more or less on time, went right to work. A couple hours later we were heading up to the new house, though we had to come back to make a second trip. From the beginning the guys were nothing but professional. Very courteous, no request on our part was a hassle, nothing damaged even slightly in the move. Couldn't have been more pleased.
Description of Work: Had Hewes move us from our condo in Midtown to a house in Buckhead. Nothing especially difficult about the move, no pianos or anything large like that. Just one crib to take apart, and some expensive framed prints to transport.

We had a very good time moving this customer and am very thankful for the review. Wanted to mention that we sent a smaller truck to fit into the loading dock area. For customers considering us... we never charge time to go back and forth if the truck we sent was not big enough. We are so excited to be completing more moves in the down town and Buckhead area. Thank you - Bill Hewes

I had seen the Hewes trucks in my Dunwoody neighborhood so when it was time to move I gave them a call for an estimate. I spoke to Bill who was very courteous and professional. (The guys he sent later told me that he was one of the nicest people that they have ever known and I believe it!). He explained what kind of vehicle they would send and the care that they would take while moving my belongings and about the guarantee that anything broken or damaged would be replaced. At the end of our conversation I scheduled with them and I am so happy I did. The two cuties that he sent to do my small move (downsizing) were nice, professional, VERY hard working and extremely competent. They talked to me when they arrived and we agreed on a game plan and they got to work. The whole exercise was done in 2 hours and they were on their way, but not before they checked and double checked that I was satisfied. Great group! I highly recommend them.

Bill and John were terrific! They were running a few minutes late, but called an hour beforehand to let us know. They were incredibly hardworking and courteous the entire time (on a 7 hour day that included two hours of driving time and lifting a lot of heavy stuff). They did not scratch one piece, and they were diligent in wrapping and securing everything in their trailer. They were honest and pleasant. I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone who needs help with moving!!

Overall, it was a terrific experience. I contacted Bill Hewes after using his company a few months ago to move a few items within my house. I had been so impressed with them that I didn't even want to bother with getting competitive quotes. I did get the quotes, however, because we were working with a fixed moving budget. Hewes's quote for the move was in line with the others I checked, but their packing charge was substantially more reasonable, so combined with my previous experience with them, it was a no-brainer to hire them. Since I was handling the move by myself, I did need help with packing. I packed up the non-breakables (books--I have hundreds; linens, clothing, etc. Hewes packed up fragile things and heavy things (china, dishes, kitchen, garage, tools, etc.). They did not charge extra for boxes, which many companies do. If I were still in the Atlanta area, I would be sure to give them back the boxes because I know they are expensive, but as it is, I will pay it forward by giving them to someone else who may be moving. Here are some ways that Hewes stands out: They take extreme care of your belongings. I have a lot of antiques and fragile items, and all were handled with great care. One small wooden wheel broke in transit and they immediately accepted responsibility for it and had it replaced. None of my glassware or antique lamps was so much as scratched or cracked. They are extraordinarily polite, respectful, and friendly. At the end of two long days of loading and unloading, they were still energetic and smiling. I, on the other hand, wanted to collapse, and I wasn't working nearly as hard, so I know those guys were exhausted! Still, they were entirely professional. Since no one is perfect, I will admit that their strongest suit is not their punctuality (here I'm talking about the packers, not the movers), and there were times it was hard to get a hold of Bill. I really don't hold that against them, however, because I sense that they are going through some growing pains as business increases for them. And business should increase, because where the rubber meets the road--the actual move--they are the best! I heartily recommend them. I've used them before, and I'd use them again. They offer that rare combination of hard work, professionalism, customer service, respect, and kindness.
Description of Work: Hewes Family Movers moved my household from the Atlanta, Georgia, area to the Tallahassee, Florida, area (about 280 miles). They also helped with some of the packing.

They came out initially to give me an estimate and were there at exactly the time promised. The estimate was carefully explained and they checked with me a number of times prior to the move date to ensure my plans hadn't changed. On the day of the move they ran into a slight delay and contacted me ahead of time to let me know, and arrived only 30 minutes later than originally scheduled. The two movers were professional and did an excellent job packing up and moving my household. The other movers contacted for quotes never even bothered to send me the quotes - these guys met and exceeded expectations.
