The person showed up to do a estimated on a move. He did not survey the contents of the apartment (opening closets, ect) but gave and estimate saying we need 100 boxes. His estimate was over $700.00 and 5 hours. I had the move completed for $205.00 and 2.5 hours. We used 25 boxes.

Response from Hewes Family Movers
We always look for the worst case scenario when estimating moves. You would be amazed at how many small homes will surprise you on moving day with a room of boxes that "came out of nowhere". Once completing a move we are usually under our estimate. We have occasionally come in at about half our original estimate. Keep in mind that we only request payment for the actual time of the move and not the estimated time. Also if we are over the estimate we automatically charge half rate for extra charges. It sounds like this other moving company did a good job. Assuming that they did - we probably would have taken about the same 2.5 hours or less if we had moved this customer. Our rate for 2.5 hours still would have been over $100 more that what this other company charged for the same amount of time. Our goal is to provide our customer consistently with the best service. I can say with confidence we take the best care of our guys and this gives us the best personnel "consistently". With that said - we usually do not offer the lowest (cheapest) price. We also have a strong commitment to offering a great value and our prices compare very well to other licensed movers in Atlanta. We just don't want to get into a situation of giving the "best case scenario" estimate and then surprise the customer with a much larger bill at the end of the move. I tell this to Preston when he goes out to estimate - "I would rather lose a customer because we estimated to high - than to have a customer upset because of a surprise higher bill". Thank you for reading our response - Bill Hewes

The gentleman who came out to quote the price initially I felt was a little on the high end. Because the company is highly rated on Angie's list I called Bill and spoke to him. He insisted on the same amount of guys, but he did lower the rate to be more competitive. On the day of the move Bill Hewes and his two guys David and Allen were fantastic. Very knowledgeable about the best way to move everything, very quick in their work, polite and professional. Even with three guys (one guy called in sick) they were fast and nothing was damaged. The gf and I have moved several times and something has always been damaged. As David and Allen did all of the loading Bill did all of the packing. They listened well to our concerns and were efficient. The entire job lasted less than 5 hours, which was 2 hours less than originally quoted with four guys. All three of these men were amazing. I have no intention of moving again, but if I were to I would consider talking only to these guys. Hewes Family Movers is just one more reason why I love Angie's List and this is just one more write up to attest to their reputation. Ty Bill, David and Allen and ty Angie.

Overall, I was very happy with Hewes Family Moving. I feel like they could improve in responsiveness and punctuality, but they excelled in all other areas. For the initial in-house estimate, the estimator arrived a couple of hours late due to some logistical issues and on moving day the crew arrived 45 minutes late. In both cases, the company was very apologetic. For responsiveness, my complaint is that I did have to play telephone tag for a bit. It would have been nice if they had a dedicated person handling the phones. I will say though that out of 4 movers I called, Hewes was the only one to return my phone call. Now for the positive! The crew was very friendly and hard-working. They didn't complain at all (even though they had to navigate through 2 sets of stairs and narrow hallways). They didn't damage my furniture or any walls. They completed the move in about half of the estimated time and didn't take any long breaks. I have to move again in a few months and I will likely call this company again.
Description of Work: I called Hewes Family Movers to get a move estimate and they were able to send someone out the same day to my house to provide a quote. The hourly rate was fair but the hour estimate seemed a bit excessive. Regardless, I figured that they may have provided a worst case scenario (since they discount at 50% for every hour they exceed the quote). I ended up selecting them for my move. I moved from one 3-level townhouse to another in the same neighborhood. Hewes moved over my furniture and other larger items.

Excellent experience! These guys are the best. Fabulous attitudes and very positive.....made the move very easy and enjoyable. Not the cheapest, but you definitely get what you pay for. I cannot reccommend them enough. Very professional and on time. We even had a lot of rain to contend with, and they handled it with excellence. Nothing broken and customer satisfaction is there #1 priority.

I assume the other party's experience was fine. I moved into the house they left. There were minor scuffs on the walls, but almost every door had a scrape (or two) on it. I have scrubbed and touched up the front door but at least two of the others will need to be repainted. This damage was caused by the move. I did a walk through before they started and the doors were fine. I have not yet moved my furniture in so there have not been any other movers in the house.

Wow - kind of shocked to see this. Not sure why a simple phone call to us first, and maybe we could have made this a good situation. My response is simple - it is rare we put a nick or scratch to our customers homes (walls, doors, floors). The same goes for furniture and items that we move. Almost without exception we get these issues taken care of even if we don't think we were responsible. We are one of the few companies that take care of these kinds of issues to the home and the items we move, without requiring the purchase of extra insurance. We absolutely bend over backwards to keep our customers happy.

Thank you and just want to clarify the description of our moving vehicles. We do have a traditional box truck we can send upon request. Our guys prefer our "furniture haulers". They are easier to load and will hold more than a traditional 26 foot box truck. We are not stuck with the common - Hmmm what do we do with these plants, flat screens, mirrors, pictures, and other stuff that would normally have to be crated. These are custom built vehicles designed for the weight of furniture and not typical commercial equipment hauling. These Furniture Haulers give us a smoother ride compared to a traditional box truck. They also have multiple layers of "E-Track". A system where anything can be strapped where we need it. It also allows us to build shelving if needed so we don't have to stack on top of other items. I wish I could take credit for these things but I kind of "borrowed" the idea from a company I use to work for in my college years. I have easily experienced over 3,000 moves with these Furniture Haulers and they are absolutely the best way to go. Please see our website for pictures. - Bill Hewes

Hewes Family Movers (HFM) significantly exceeded our best expectations. They gave us a "not to exceed" estimate. Their pricing was reasonable and significantly less than an estimate we had gotten from a large national mover. Our antique house in Olde Towne Portsmouth, VA is 3K sq. ft. with 3 floors. There are 4 bedrooms and 2-1/2 baths with large "double parlors" serving as living room and dining room. Our furniture is mostly large, heavy antiques...mostly family, requiring a lot of strength and care to move. They were totally accommodating to our every need. The guys who packed us also drove , unloaded and placed the furniture for us. They showed up exactly when they said they would. Those four guys went right to work upon arrival at 9:30 a.m. and worked tirelessly until they rolled out at 11:30 p.m. Next morning they and our furniture were in Griffin and ready to deliver to us. We stayed in Portsmouth several more days to visit with friends and say good-bye. HFM told us to just let them know when we wanted delivery. We called them 6 days later and they delivered the next morning. The same great four guys made the delivery and worked most of the day putting things here, then when my wife changed her mind, moving them over there. They never seemed to tire of our foolishness and were polite and cheerful throughout the whole move. Moving the contents of our 3,000 sq. ft. antique house in VA to a 1200 sq. ft. chalet (all windows and no wall space) in Griffin, GA at least half of it must be stored for eventual use by our son in Dallas, TX and the guys from HFM told us to just call them when we're ready and they'll move it to storage. We are just blown away: Not only have they greatly exceeded our best expectations, they are delightful young men. My wife and I both have thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with them. We've been moved other companies twice before. From those experiences we very much doubt we could have gotten HFM's level of service even at a much higher price. We would heartily recommend Hewes Family Movers to anyone planning a move. It would be hard to imagine a better moving experience.

These guys are "good". VERY GOOD! They not only showed up on time, but took extra painstaking steps to ask me questions about the move and my items. They worked diligently and this was a move over 3 locations and 11 hours. I have moved over 15 times in my lifetime and these guys are, by far, the very best I've ever encountered. If there was a way to give my phone number so you could hear me rave about their work, I would easily consent.

Everyone I dealt with was extremely polite and professional. Each piece of furniture was wrapped and packed carefully. Delicate pieces of art and furniture were carried in a separate van to ensure their safety. On local moves you pay by the hour with a 2 hour minimum. They finished in half the estimated time so my final bill was half of what I expected, a very pleasant surprise! Everything arrived safe and sound in our new home. I can't recommend Hewes Family Movers highly enough. You won't be sorry.

The move went smoothly (see my comments above).
Description of Work: Hewes Family Movers moved my son from Athens, Georgia to our suburban Atlanta home. They were on time (10 minutes early), professional, trustworthy, and hard working. They moved several large pieces of furniture from a third-floor apartment (with no elevator) in tight quarters to our home, which required dealing with more stairs. From obtaining an estimate ( a few days prior to the move) to the actual move, they were attentive, nice, and professional. I would recommend them to anyone who is moving locally or long distance, and will use them again when we are in need of a mover. Bill Hewes (owner) and Matt and Dave (who did the actual moving) were a pleasure to talk to and work with.

Hewes sent a representative to our house to provide a quote, which was competitive to two other companies. However, we found Hewes to be the most professional and responsive (we had a somewhat short timeframe before moving), and therefore, made the decision to use them. The actual movers did a great job and handled everything with care. Equally as important (and a seemingly rare occurence with movers), the initial quote and final invoice were identical. Anyone who has ever dealt with a dishonest mover can appreciate this fact! I would certainly recommend Hewes for local or interstate moves.

So sorry for the confusion in pricing. I will contact this customer to find out what went wrong. We are sincere about our policy "no payment requested until the move is complete and the customer is satisfied". It is our way to assure you that there will be no "bad surprises" with billing or other issues at the end of your move.

The service provided was very good. The company sent someone out ahead of time to provide an estimate and they noted that if they went over time, the rate would be reduced by 50%. They actually came in under the estimate, but I wanted to provide that feedback because it helped reduce worry about what would happen if the move took longer. Three young men arrived on time, were very polite and moved VERY quickly, while still taking care to not damage anything. Respectful, polite, on-time and moving expeditiously, this was a good choice for a moving company. I have used another large Atlanta moving company before that most are familiar with and while they performed well, I wanted to try Hewes out based on the Angie's List reviews. I'm glad I did, they provided an excellent service and if I ever move in-town again, I will strongly consider using them again.
Description of Work: The move included two pickups, one north of Atlanta and the other within the city limits for an in-city move. The services mainly included moving boxes that were already packed, furniture and typical items from a 2BR/1BA apartment.

I was so pleased with the staff at Hewes. The owner is a wonderful man that helped me a great deal with my move. This is a small, family owned business and they truly care about satisfied customers. Mr. Hewes came to my home to estimate my move, help me determine how many boxes and what sizes I needed, how much tape and packing paper I should purchase, and other moving tips. He gave me quite a few supplies ahead of time, when I asked him how much I owed he said not to worry... just pay for it at the end when the truck is packed. He did not even bother to write anything down or give me a bill. He is a good family man that believes in what our country is all about... small business. His crew came out the day of the load up and worked very hard. I highly recommend Hewes Family Movers.

The four man crew from Hewes arrived at the expected time and started work immediately. They loaded the trailers efficiently and even put up with our indecision over what few items were to go or stay. When all was packed and ready to go, they discovered that the truck battery had died, but it proved to be a minor delay. Once at our new house , they unloaded everything quickly and cheerfully. I personally thought all the fun had gone out of the project by noon, but those guys were always pleasant and upbeat. I know they were exhausted by the end of the day but never failed to take care handling our possessions and maintaining a professional atttitude. My only complaint would be that they hooked up the hot and cold water spigots backwards on the washing machine.

First Preston came out to visually survey to make an estimate. Even though it took a day longer and cost more than the original estimate it was about $5000 - $8000 LESS than the other estimate I got from another Angie's List "A-rated" mover who chose to give me a phone estimate without sending an actual appraiser The actual moving date kept changing b/c our closing date seemed to be a moving target. Bill Hewes and I had to change the date a few times and he was very flexible and accommodating. The move began with 8 movers and 4 packers on the first day. The movers started putting everything on the trucks that didn't need packing in boxes, like furniture. The packers were very fast and efficient at packing up everything that I hadn't had time to pre-pack myself, which turned out to be TONS of stuff. It took them about 5 hours. I had already spent 10 days packing and hadn't made a dent in the amount that had to be packed. The packers were amazing, organized and quick. Meanwhile the movers were loading the trucks, starting on the top floor (3 bedrooms and 2 baths) and working their way down. At the end of the first day they had finished loading the top floor and much of the main floor including the Master bedroom. It was all happening so fast I can't remember what time we started to the new house to unload and get the Master BR set up so we could stay there that night but they didn't leave my new house until about 10-ish. The next morning they finished unloading the 3 trucks that had been packed the 1st day and then headed back to the old house to finish loading there. Again, they were amazingly quick, but careful with our belongings. They started on the basement which can't be described accurately b/c it contained not only the workshop (which was overwhelming by itself) but it had 35 years of stuff we had collected ranging from memorabilia to furniture we saved for our children to use for their houses. To look at the amount of things that had to be moved would blow your mind. Not only did they manage to move it, they took great care to make sure it all made it to the new house and was placed in an organized fashion and not just dumped in piles, which is what happened on our last move 11 years ago. Because it took a day longer than had been estimated, Bill Hewes, the owner, came on the 3rd day to ensure his workers had been accurate in their description of how much stuff had to be moved. When he saw how much stuff still had to be moved and how much the crews had already moved he understood why it had taken longer than estimated. Not only did he come to inspect how his crews were performing, he helped them and worked as hard as they did all day. They placed every item or box exactly where we asked no matter how heavy or difficult it was. If we later changed our minds and wanted to rearrange, no problem. They did it willingly and with a smile. BTW, the crews worked just as hard the days when Bill was not on site. When everything was unloaded and placed where we wanted it we did a "walk-through" and found a couple of things we wanted moved around again and Bill and 2 of his guys stayed and rearranged until we were satisfied. After that we sat down with Bill and he explained all the charges and since it took a day longer than expected we knew it would cost more than the estimate he was very generous in our favor with how he figured it. The only damage we have found was 2 small scuffs on the wall where very large sofas had to squeeze through a narrow passage and a fixable ding on the finial of a post on our bed, of which Bill is having repaired. That is amazing considering how many things were moved. We could not have been more pleased with the professionalism of the crews and how Hewes Family Movers turned an excruciatingly stressful situation into a tolerable experience. Moving is not fun but they made it as easy and as pleasant as possible. These guys are actual employees and not some day laborers off the street. They knew what they were doing and did it well. Thanks to Matt, Bill, Chris, Jessica, Christie, Dallas, Jeremy, another Jeremy, Jordan, Preston, Colby and all the others whose names I'm so sorry I can't remember b/c my brain is still scrambled from the overwhelming experience. You were all so professional, polite and hard working. I never once saw anyone slacking off. You guys were a pleasure to work with. It was a breath of fresh air to see workers who actually worked hard without complaining. You don't see that much these days. I could keep writing until next week about how good these guys are but I think you get the idea by now. I just can't say enough good things about you all. Merry Christmas to Bill and the entire crew!!
Description of Work: Moved entire 4 bedroom household of furniture, 2 pianos (one baby grand and one upright player), plus a very large basement full of storage items and a fairly large workshop with many tools, power tools, lumber, other wood, etc. Plus we had a 16 foot storage pod that they unloaded as well.

Bill and his crew showed up on time and ready. They had worked with us to time the move so they could pack us up on a Friday for a move to North Carolina. We arranged for them to arrive in NC on Tuesday which gave us time to make final arrangements for the apartment we were moving into. We had done a good bit of packing prior to their arrival which expedited things and they were quick, efficient and experienced. They arrived at 9 AM and were finished at 3 PM and left with two full trucks. They arrived in NC on time and dealt with moving the contents of a 4 bedroom house into a 3 bedroom apartment again with efficiency and good humor. They arrived at 8:30 and were on the road by 3 PM. Bill Hewes is a very hands-on type of guy and we dealt with him personally throughout the move. I would hire Hewes Family Movers unconditionally for any future move. .

We have used other movers and were going to use them again but we felt more comfortable with these guys since they actually come out and see what needs to be moved before providing you with a "better than estimate" price. The move ended up taking a few hours longer than expected and the "better than estimate" deal was honored which saved us a couple hundred dollars (the estimate is for how many hours they expect it will take and they charge half their normal hourly rate for any hours over that estimate). The guys they used were very good and overall very nice people.

My Mom passed away a short while ago, and I asked Bill Hewes and his team to help us close out her apartment. Items moved were furniture, boxes containing glassware and china, file boxes containing paperwork, and other items. Much of the furniture went to consignment, some went to storage along with files, glassware and china, and other boxed items, and other items were donated to a women's shelter. A few items were thrown away. Bill and his team handled all these items, getting everything safely to their destinations. Nothing was broken or defaced in any way.. Bill and his team worked quietly, efficiently, and neatly, and their manner was soft-spoken, polite, and friendly. There were items that I did not know what to do about, and Bill made good suggestions. When we got to the storage part of the move, Bill and his team unloaded everything into the storage cell, then suggested that we might get a smaller one, which would have saved us some money; however, it turned out that the smaller units had lower ceilings and would not work for us. I appreciated Bill's efforts on our behalf, however. I would definitely use Bill Hewes' services again and would recommend this company to friends.
Description of Work: 1. Move furniture, boxes, and file cabinets, and other items into truck. 2. Bring furniture to consignment store. 3. Bring boxes and cabinets to storage 4. Bring other items (furniture and smaller items) for donation to Women's Shelter. 5. Bring a few items to my home.

We had used Hewes once before on a very small job, and we had received excellent service. We had a need to swap dining room tables with a family member, so I called Hewes again to see if they could do the job for us. We needed the job done fairly quickly due to the timing of the estate sale. Bill Hewes called me back promptly, and was able to work us in during the week after another job that he had in our area. Like the first job, Bill and his mover David did an excellent job wrapping the furniture on our end and at our family's house. The job was done quickly and carefully, at an excellent price. Beyond that, Bill is a great person to work with. I would use Hewes Family Movers again, and would recommend them for any size moving job.
Description of Work: Small moving job: we were swapping dining room tables with a family member who was having an estate sale. We are in Norcross, family is in Marietta. Hewes came to our house and loaded our dining room table and a couple other small pieces of furniture; drove to our family's house, unloaded our furniture, and loaded the other dining room table, as well as a couple of large bookcases; and drove back to our house, unloading the furniture back into our house.,

Hewes completely packed four bedrooms, five baths, plus yard equipment, workbenches and large tools from a small barn and some outdoor articles. They packed the bedding and took down the beds, wrapped and packed everything in the large kitchen, the bathrrom cabinets, the closets, storage areas, and everywhere. The four packers were exceptional; they noted any damaged items prior to packing and marked all of the boxes with room and contents. They were courteous, professional, very cheerful and they really hustled. There was no wasted time at all. The move went very well. The new location was less than one mile from the old location, so the travel time was negligeable. The movers were very professional also, and they hustled to the point I saw several of them almost running at times. Oh yeah, they even bought my lunch. I would use Hewes again without hesitation and recommend them highly,
Description of Work: Total packing of a historic home consisting of five bedrooms and five baths; several large storage areas, living room, dining room with large china cabinet, large kitchen with a multitude of cabinets, outdoor lawn equipment and statuaries, a small barn with large power tools, and lawn equipment. Two refrigerators, a commercial-sized washer and dryer, a large entertainment center full of electronics, and a rolltop desk full of computer equipment. Loading, moving and unloading one full truckload of household goods and a second trip with all of the lawn and barn articles; mowers, carts, tools, large gang box etc. They totally set up my computer and my entertainment center, the washer, dryer and the beds. They did not leave until I had checked everything and was fully satisfied.

They were excellent. We were very pleased with them. They were punctual and efficient. They were willing to go above and beyond what we considered the call of duty. They emptied our attic for us. They were very cooperative and very business-like. We would recommend them highly. They were not the most expensive or the least expensive, but we got our money’s worth for the work they did. They would be the first people we would call if we were to move again.

My husband set up our move with Hewes Family movers. We actually used PODs and initially hired the Hewes to help load the PODs. We were so impressed with the 2 guys they sent out that we hired them a second time to unload the PODs a month later. The 2 guys worked so hard to get the POD loaded to the maximum. They were very careful with all my delicate and expensive furniture. This is the first move I have ever had where NOTHING was broken! I can't say too much about how respectful, courteous, and professional the guys were.
Description of Work: Loaded and unloaded our 3 PODs.
