Description of Work: My agreement with the dad was not quite conveyed to the son, who did not quite convey to the workers. The idea was, I believed, to semi-remodel my kitchen - with paint & trim & patching holes and by putting up new ceiling lights that I bought. I pulled furniture away from the walls and so on. They haven't heard of drop cloths. The ceiling lights went up before they painted the ceiling. So my new lights? Covered with paint. Furniture, including a couple of antiques? Paint speckled. The floor - a disaster. The furniture? Not moved back, but instead, piled anyhow. Footprints indicated that the workers didn't care to use ladders. When the son came to collect, I pointed out all of this. He said that I was the one to toss around all of that paint! They didn't know where the furniture went, so it couldn't be moved back into place. What? They didn't notice where the furniture was before they moved it? I'd have to do it. You know what? I just handed him the full amount and added that the firm would not have any of the other work we'd planned. They were highly recommended on Angie's list - different people do different work, right? So, I do not doubt those recommendations. But I do know that the whole clean-up was horrid. The upshot was that I paid over $1,000 to have a room partly spackled and painted. When you use this firm, get it all written down. |

Response from AWT Construction
This project cost was $1000. My Lead on the project was Alex, my nephew. Alex used a copy of our contract as a scope of work for the project. Our first estimate for this project included a complete inside repair and paint. Budget restraints limited our scope of work to the kitchen & dining room. This was limited more to only wall repair and paint. It is not uncommon for a homeowner to talk to multiple contractors about a project. From time to time what has been discussed and whom it was discussed with gets confused. I try to make detailed notes and put as much as possible in my estimates. These estimates are later used as my contract. I then use my contract as a layout for the project's scope of work. In order to provide a quality finished product, I send a crew in to prep the walls for paint before actually painting. This includes tasks such as removing nails and or wall paper and patching sheet rock where needed. Due to the age and state of disrepair of the home, this prep work took two days to complete. The majority of this time was spent on wallpaper removal. The remainder was associated with a wall patching. in the kitchen that was originally paneling and sheetrock. The homeowner changed her mind and told my crew to install lattice work over the paneling. Due to the face that lattice would be difficult to keep clean in the kitchen and would add additional cost to the project. This was not done. Also, at some point in the project we installed new light fixtures in the kitchen. The customer had originally said she could not afford them, I did this for no additional charge. At the end of a work day, my crew straightened up the home with the understanding they would be returning the next day. The homeowner was not satisfied with the way my crew had cleaned up for the day and called and asked that I come to the home and make sure that it was cleaned properly. The next morning, I personally went with the crew and cleaned our workspaces. We removed the little debris that remained, scraped and swept the tile floors. There were specks of paint on the tile, but nothing grievously overlooked, some sheet rock mud and even some of the homeowners pet droppings. But we cleaned the entire space regardless if we were responsible for the dirt or not. I met with the homeowner a few days later to collect on a completed job and was met with frustration and accusations. The homeowner was blaming my crew for getting paint underneath her table and chairs. When I tried to explain to her that the table and chairs had been covered with plastic sheeting and had not moved at all throughout the duration of our work, and that it was likely not our doing, she would not listen. With regards to the antiques, and I use this term because of the items age and not its condition, the damage that she pointed out appeared to have been caused from years of moving the item, not from any recent damage. And the paint that she claimed was on the “antiques” was in actuality sheetrock dust that had been overlooked and was wiped away with the swipe of a dry rag. My original agreement with the homeowner was only to paint two rooms. I waived the prep cost in attempts to work with the homeowners budget. This means that I not only provided a prep service the customer was not paying for, I also installed new lighting in the kitchen at not cost to her. Our work was very high quality and exactly what the homeowner asked for and then some. As for my ethics, I believe that I conducted myself ethically in this scenario. I went above and beyond what the customer and I had agreed upon. The space was cleaner when we left that it was when we arrived and the work that we did was of high quality. If I have not fully address this customers complaints, please feel free to contact me and I will answer any remaining questions you might have.

Description of Work: They repaired siding in two places that was torn down in storm. They did that free because they noticed that we had rain issues despite having gutters. Gutters done by another company were too small, so they used the older downspouts that were in very good shape and put 6 inch seamless gutters in place. They did everything in a long day and did it well never complaining about the 103 degree day with heat index of 116 degrees. Storm afterwards showed they were 100 percent correct about our drainage issues. These gutters actually work well!

Description of Work: Wayne Taylor's team replaced our roof shingles in January 2015 while dodging some cold and rainy weather. One of the things I liked was they did about 40% of the job (the back side) and stopped. There was no exposed roof, just old shingles on the front, new shingles on the back side, and some shingle bundles draped over the roof peaks. Then it rained the next day. Prior to starting the job they had delayed one day since the temperature was too cold to handle the shingles. On the last day they finished the job and very little evidence was left in the yard from the old shingle removal. | |There was one mix up with the shingles installed on the roof that worked out in the end. My wife and I were shown a specific Owens Corning product during our initial discussions on this project when the estimate was provided by AWT. However, a different Owens Corning shingle was delivered for the job. My research online and with Consumer Reports showed this delivered shingle was a good buy for our home, but cost less than the shingle type shown during our initial consultation. I payed the invoiced amount but brought this discrepancy to Wayne's attention and he provided an explanation based on his business practice. I asked him to make an appropriate adjustment, which he did. | |Overall, this was a positive experience. I expect to have AWT perform some additional work on our home in the near future. When it gets warmer! |

Description of Work: Came to the house, asked a few questions, took some notes. Gave rough estimate and sent me some pictures off a simple program that gave me nothing to sink my teeth into. Unless they follow-up with a better idea of what could be done, this will be a complete waste of time and money.

Response from AWT Construction
Not sure were the confusion was here. This was a Deal ID #285261 $49 for a Kitchen or Bathroom Design Consultation with 3-D Renderings. On November 5th at 10 am. We meet. I looked the kitchen over and made notes. On November 6th at at 6:21 you were emailed the 3D drawings to review. This is a very unusual space to work with. The home has been added on to several times over the last 25 years. The design options here are unlimited. I gave a cost range to help him build a budget for the project. The email on November 6th read as follows. (Removed Member Name), Mauri has played with this most of the day. She feels this is the best starting point that looks good. One of the main things that you need in a good working kitchen is a good work triangle. To give you the best use of your space in the large kitchen. She has added a prep sink in the bar. This acsually gives you 2 different work triangles in the kitchen. Look these over and let me know what you think. Wayne I called on November 7th and left a message. I also caller again on November 11th and left a message. This review is a little mixed up. Take out the fact that we have not spoken since I was there on November 5th. I preformed a serves and it was not Gutters. It was to give a 3D kitchen Drawings. This was done Rather Fast. The program we design our kitchen is 20/20 and it costs just over $6000.00. It is be fair simple. It is one of the best cabinet design programs on the market. I made my field drawings on a Motion 3500 tablet PC. With all of this I can't help a customer that want return my calls or emails. The 3D drawing deal is not to help me draw more kitchens. I give the $300 design for $49 so I can sell kitchens. Hopefully (Removed Member Name) will return my call So we can help him with his new kitchen.

Description of Work: At this writing we have interviewed two siding/window/gutter contractors (both with Angie's List) and have decided to go with AWT Construction for whole house vinyl, vinyl replacement windows, and leaf-free gutter replacement. This is a two story house with all "wood" siding and an excess of 20 windows. AWT owner Wayne Thompson provided a thorough estimate and was willing to spend as much time with us as we needed to answer our questions and provide friendly, no-pressure advice. He also left us with samples of all the products and color options. He called ahead, arrived on time, and was courteous and amiable. He made two visits: One for the initial estimate and one for the window measurements. He even suggested an option of having the entire job done at one time or to stagger the work to better suit our financial comfort level. | |Window replacement starts in about a week (last week of June 2014) and when that is all done, we will begin phase two: siding and gutters. We will provide a follow up report when the work has been completed.
