It was very good. They came out and gave me an estimate and wrote up the price that it was. It was actually more complicated than they had thought but they stuck with the price and they did a good job. They were very quick.

Scheduling the estimate as well as actual appointment went very smoothly, Andy was punctual, thorough and patient with my questions, etc. It went downhill from there....it took 10 days for them to provide the requested estimates. They were not broken out as requested and certain things were unclear. When I followed up via email with some very specific questions I received no response. I had confirmed with Andy that email was an acceptable way to communicate and verified that the email address on his card was the best to use. I finally received a call a month later from the office looking to collect a $75 inspection fee that Andy forgot to get from me at our appointment...still no answers to my questions. I knew about the fee and had reached out offering to pay it, 2 days after my appointment...no response. When I received the call about the $75 I expressed my frustration and demanded to speak with a manager, owner, etc. Louis, the owner was available and got on the phone immediately. He apologized for the lack of communication, waived the inspection fee and offered to review the correspondence personally and get me the answers that I needed. He truly wanted to make it right. He was very persistent in trying to reach me over the next few weeks, however once we did catch up he did not have all the answers I was looking for. Very frustrated that a company followed up on a $75 inspection fee but failed to follow up on initial questions for $25,000 estimate. I ended up using 3 other contractors to fulfill the needs that JH Kinard could have met and delayed my projects several months.
Description of Work: Needed new roof, 2 fireplaces worked on, flus relined and chimney work above the roof as well as duct cleaning...seemed like a great one-stop shop for all of my needs based on prior reviews.

J H Kinard Chimney & Fireplace was quite communicative and friendly on the phone. They were prompt and courteous. Workers (2) arrived on time and covered the area around the fireplace so as not to make a big mess. They used a flashlight to inspect the chimney from the firebox, and a shop vac to clean it from the ground-level firebox. They did not go up to the top of the chimney or use any brushes to clean the chimney or anything like that. We don't use the fireplace a lot, so maybe it just didn't need much cleaning, On the whole, they were here for maybe 30-40 minutes. So, the price (195 fixed) seemed like a quite a bit for what was done. On the other hand, it is good to know that we are all set and the chimney is in good condition, and they did exactly what they said they would do.

We called them out for a sweep and inspection. They missed the two-hour window they gave us by almost half an hour. Then the young man told us it would be $470 - $195 for the sweep and inspection and $275 to caulk the fireplace, but we could not use the fireplace because it was not up to code and he would not give us a price to bring it to code. BTW, the fireplace is original to the house (1999) and has been inspected multiple times without exception. He took our check for the $75 service call (he told us using a credit card would be an additional 3%) and left.

Response from J H Kinard Chimney & Fireplace
The technician was 20 minutes late for the appointment. He called when in route to tell her when he would get there. We try very hard to be on time, but unfortunately, Atlanta traffic will cause us to be late on occasions. Upon the technicians inspection, he found a chimney that needed to be cleaned, $195. A mantel that is not up to code, meaning to close to the firebox. All mantels are to be 12 inches above the firebox, and 6 inches away from firebox on the sides, to be safe to burn. The fireplace also needed a cosmetic seal, $275, totaling $470. The price to bring it up to code can vary depending on material chosen. It can range form $1000-$5000. We do charge $75 for an inspection, but, that can be applied back toward any service. We have been in business for over 60 years. We strive to ensure all customers are 100% satisfied, but, on occasion they don't like what we have to say., We have many repeat customers and prosper because of all the referrals we get from our customers telling friends and family members to call us. It' unfortunate this customer had an unpleasant experience.

I didn't do the work with them. Their price was pretty high. I ended up getting the chimney repaired probably for $3000 or $4000 less than what they quoted. They were professional, they got it to me quickly and it was formatted. It was an e-mail quote, but it was easily understood. Everything was discreetly priced, every element was priced. So it wasn't a bad quote, just high. They were pretty professional, I didn't have an issue with that. It was just that the price was high. They got to me pretty quickly. I would use them in future if their prices were in line.
Description of Work: I got a quote from them. I had a chimney that needed to be essentially torn down and rebuilt on the outside. That's where most of the damage was. There was some roof damage as a result of the chimney leaning over. It was pretty substantial roofing repair. That's what I got the quote for.

Excellent experience. David and another gentleman showed up on time, were courteous, cleaned up after themselves! What a concept but it's rare in today's day. David even gave me his cell and I had to call him later about how to turn on the fireplace since it'd been inactive so long. He was patient and courteous with me again. This company is great! Highly recommended!

The guys (team of 2) did a great job. They cleaned the chimney and sealed around the gas pipe, and answered questions that my husband and I had about the process. They came prepared to install a new back firebrick in our prefab fireplace. They were very courteous and pleasant and cleaned up after themselves. They also sent us a care sheet with details on how to cure the new firebrick. We are so glad we've found a great vendor to keep our fireplace serviced since it had been over 5 years since it was properly cleaned and serviced. We're very pleased and will use them again -- Thank you!

Provider was on time and took great care to not damage my rugs near the fireplace. Cleaned the chimney with wire brush and extensions. The brush was narrower than I thought would have been used. I did see soot come out of the chimney from their one push up and back down. I had expected that the brush would have been put in and out of the chimney more than once. Especially, when I overhead the crew talking it was "really dirty" yet I was informed it looked ok and was safe to have a fire.

Inspected and Cleaned prefab type fireplace, 30 years old. Replaced back wall and cemented and sealed bottom and sides of fireplace where mantel attaches to wall. Fireplace had been unsafe. I am very pleased with their pleasantness, responsiveness, professionalism, and total experience. They have always cleaned my chimney, and I have never had a problem with them. The technician was David Cooper and was so easy to work with. Detailed the problems and gave a price immediately. Work was done at my schedule the next week and price was exactly the quoted price. Even answered questions and explained in detail about converting a gas log fireplace to woodburning. My son has considered this option for his house. I am very pleased and trust them completely. Excellent service and courtesy.

'We called JH Kinnard to install a top sealing damper on a fireplace for a home we recently purchased. The fireplace was a prefab and the original damper was warped and could not be closed. The damper could not be replaced since the fireplace was a prefabricated unit. JH Kinnard was the only company we could find to offer us the option of the top sealing damper as opposed to completely replacing the fireplace at a cost of over $5,000 estimated by other companies, which would not even include repair to drywall after the new chimney was in place. I am so happy we found JH Kinnard and a much cheaper alternative to replacing the fireplace unit. Quinton Reilly was our technician and he was extremely professional and knowledgeable. He had also been our technician previously for chimney cleaning which was purchased through an Angie's list deal. We will defintely use JH Kinnard in the future and will recommend them to our friends and neighbors!

The two men showed up on time. After looking at the chimney, one of the persons stated that the chimney wasn't that dirty and really didn't need to be cleaned. He said that they would refund the price of the cleaning, which I appreciated. I asked them to go ahead and clean the chimney anyway. They were careful to not get soot all over the living room. They showed me the total amount of soot removed and cleaned up everything. Woudl definitely use them again.

Within a few days of them putting the liner in, my fireplace was not drafting correctly. If I closed the door on the fireplace it would completely put the fire out. I called them to fix the issue, and they claimed I would need to purchase the original liner that I wanted in the first place. The price would have been fair if he had done the correct job. When I had another chimney service come to fix the job, they explained he had really deceived me. I have spent a lot of time and money fixing this issue. I just read the provider response and found several *incorrect* statements. First, there was NO fire in the stove when they came for their inspection. Not only that, I always have the fireplace cleaned out and the the hearth cleaned off, ready for the men to do their work. I used the fireplace in my old house for 30 yrs and I feel it's common courtesy that I make their work space ready. Secondly, the wood stove insert was constructed with a very specific connection to be used *with* a metal liner with no modifications needed. I did call the company and was told the only solution was to purchase a new fireplace insert and have a metal liner installed with the new insert. Subsequently, two other chimney sweeps have told me my original fireplace insert is completely compatible with a metal liner and the clay liner was wholly inadquete and dangerous for use with a fireplace insert. My use of the clay liner in every day manner lead to a stage 3 creosote condition which could have caused a chimney fire. It was directly caused by the clay liner used in combination with a wood stove. A clay liner is for use with an open fireplace, not a wood stove. My hands-on experience with 30+ years of safely using my wood stove and having it cleaned yearly and *safely* by competent contractors tell me that this company has serious trouble with putting customer safety over an easy profit in the hopes the customer doesn't figure out they've been given second rate, dangerous work.
Description of Work: I had recently purchased my home. I needed a liner put in my fireplace. The company put in a liner that I did not prefer. I have a fireplace insert stoves, which means they should have used a metal liner. They put in a clay liner, which is not compatible with my specific fireplace. This is incredibly dangerous.

Response from J H Kinard Chimney & Fireplace
Our company was called to inspect and clean this homeowners’ chimney and older model woodstove. After the technician did his inspection, he determined that there were gaps in the mortar joints of the terra cotta tiles lining the chimney. This makes it unsafe for a wood burning fire, by today’s standards. Older stoves were made to be compatible with terra cotta chimneys and old fashioned fireplaces, which aren’t built today because of the cost. We did a repair installing a fire clay mortar in between terra cotta tiles lining the flu. This was the least expensive option and best application making sure it is safe to burn wood. The homeowner could have purchased a newer stove or the old one could have been modified to use with a steel lining, but we always offer a customer options from the most expensive to the least expensive while keeping safety our number one priority. The homeowner called back she didn’t feel the woodstove was functioning the same as it was prior to our repair. When the tech arrived there was a fire in the stove and we were not able to do a thorough inspection, it was too hot. The technician stated, in his professional opinion, it appeared to be functioning perfectly normal. The homeowner called again December 26, 2013, she heard a loud thud and believed something had fallen in the chimney. Our technician went back out January 9, 2014 and pulled out the woodstove to do a thorough inspection. He did not find any problems with the woodstove or chimney. We did not hear from this homeowner again until this review was posted on February 23, 2015. We were unaware that she still believed there was a problem. We attempted to call her after reading her comments and seeing this review to obtain more information. However, the number we have on file for her is no longer working. My 35 years of hands on experience leaves me confident that the work performed was safe for her woodstove application and far less costly, as long as you clean the woodstove annually. Wood burning stoves produce a slow smoldering fire ensuring good heat production. They also produce a lot of carbon build up. You need to clean woodstoves annually to remove the carbon build up. We would have done everything within our power to make sure this homeowner was satisfied had we had the opportunity. If you researched our company we believe our reputation speaks for itself. Good customer relationships and quality service is what we have built our business upon for over 60 years. We pride ourselves on building customers for life.

My insurance company had told me I needed a new chimney cap. I had two companies come out to give me estimates. The first company told me that I needed two new pieces, and that one of the pieces was no longer being made. He told me that he could order one piece, and that he could just paint over the other piece for me. When J H Kinard came out, they led me to believe that they would be able to get me both pieces new, and quoted me $400 more than the other company. I decided to go with them, thinking I would get all new pieces. Once the work was done, I noticed that they had in fact just painted over the old piece, just like the first company said they would do. I ended up paying $400 more with JH Kinard than I would have with the other company, for the exact same work. They were not upfront and honest with what exactly they would be doing.
