I initially asked him to install a tile floor in my guest bath he asked for measurements and quoted me $100. He came at 7am Tuesday, 3/8, left for lunch around 11:00am and returned around 2:30-3pm and left around 9pm. When he arrived I showed him the tile as I had laid it out and I had an accent strip which he said is a design and would cost more. I told him I thought it was worth more than $100 when he quoted me over the phone AND I would pay him more. I did not want tile installed only around the cabinet and asked that he do the whole floor, so the cabinet was removed it was damaged beyond use but that was okay because it was a cheap cabinet and I preferred to get another. I gave him $100 to start (I had all materials and supplies) he only needed his tools. When he removed the toilet I told him I didn't want to put the same back and had gotten a new one, he told me "you know a plumber charges $150 to change a toilet even though you have to take one out to install tile part of the work I thought). I again told him I would pay him for all of his services and gave him $120 more. As he removed the spacers I told him the floor looked nice but I noticed that some of the tiles were not level with each other and he said he would fix them. He then installed the toilet. As he was putting in the cabinet in he discovered the hoses were too short for the sink and a flex adapter of some sort was needed because the pipe from the sink was not long enough to fit in the drain, we discussed that I didn't know exactly what to get from the store- if he would get it, and I asked if he would clean up the wall that was damaged around where the cabinet was removed. I asked him how much more to do that, he asked for $30, I gave him $44 and told him that I got paid on Friday and would pay him the rest (whatever that was as he never really gave me a total price). This was Wednesday, he arrived around 8:30-9am and left my house around 12-1pm. I called him Thursday early afternoon and left a message asking when he could come back, no response, called again voice mail full. I called his wife and she told me they were going out of town and would not return until Sunday, I called back thinking he had taken the hoses from the sink and not wanting to be unable to use the bathroom until Monday or later, and she asked him if he had which he said he did not and I found them in the tub. She told me they would not be back until Sunday and I would have to find someone else to put the sink back in. I called him Monday around lunch time and he said that I could drop the hoses at his house (which I did leaving them at his driveway) and that he would get them and the flex adapter and put the sink/cabinet back in, I told him I had already repaired the wall around the cabinet. I told him that a few tiles were not level and that both my son and I had tripped on them and they needed to be re-done. He said he would take care of it and correct any problems. I then received calls from his wife (I was in tub could not answer), so when I called her back she said he never felt he was getting paid for his time and how much a plumber would have charged and I told her I have already paid him $264 and will pay the remaining balance when he finishes the job - though he never gave me a fixed price. She brought the hoses left them on my porch and told me he did not want to deal with it. So I now have to find another person to install my sink AND correct the bad tile job. And by the way, while he was installing the durock on Tuesday he screwed into the hot water line which resulted in leaking water that finally burst through the ceiling in my garage on Friday. Thank God I have a home warranty which repaired the leak and will repair the ceiling and light fixture damage.
