Extremely well!!!
Description of Work: I called Bob with a residential problem where water was flooding my basement which I believed to be due to an adjacent land owner improperly engineering their lot after demolishing a previous structure. Although he was unable to help me within my time time he provided me with a wealth of information about how to further research and find someone who could. His patience and the detailed care with which he addressed my issue was ideal from my prospective as a consumer. I would recommend Bob to anyone needing the services of a geotechnical engineer!!!

I’m disappointed that they don’t give you a written printout of the report included in the fee. Charging an extra $100 to simply have in writing what his inspection found is rather over-the-top! I needed the inspection for my own reassurance and not as proof for any home sale or insurance purposes. So, it was not as critical to have anything in writing. But, I like to keep records of everything dealing with my property. The engineer was good at returning my call and setting up an appointment. He arrived on time and took the time to hear my concerns as we walked around the house. I have two large trees growing very close to my house and a large root running under the side of my foundation. The root actually lifted up a large concrete slab that was there as a splashguard for the gutter. I was concerned about any possible structural damage done underneath my crawlspace, plumbing or sewer lines. I was considering having it cut down. He spent about 2 hours doing his inspection under my very tight crawlspace, which I describe as a “belly crawl.” He explained his findings and didn’t find any damage done by the tree root and shared with me that the tree must have a water source under the house since it is growing in that direction. They should just include the report in the inspection fee.
Description of Work: Inspected my foundation for structural damage.

Robert came out when I realized something might be wrong - and provided a thorough analysis of what needed to be done. I used his report to hire a contractor. Bob also reviewed the work at mid-point and at the end, to ensure it was done to code and done well.
Description of Work: Bob analyzed a DIY job done by previous owners to my current home that had been done way under code. He gave me the specs I would need to bring it up to code and ensure it had structural integrity. He is a real pro - and gave me the kind of guidance that ensures the contractors did the job right, and that give future buyers of this house confidence that it was done right.

They were fantastic. In fact, we called several other firms who either did not answer their phones nor did they return phone calls; this firm was genuine, kind, and ended up looking a lot of things for us while he was there. Fantastic!
Description of Work: We simply needed an Engineer's assessment on an odd support wall before we removed a header--from a closet of all places!

We communicated by phone and email at various points, from setting up the appointment to finalizing the report and found Bob to be the things you hope for in a contractor: prompt, friendly, thorough, and professional. We also appreciated his providing additional certified copies of the final report, should we need them in the future. We were a little surprised at the final cost initially because it was higher than the original estimate. After talking with Bob we felt that the price did reflect his time inspecting the problem and preparing the detailed report that was provided to us at the end of his analysis. We discussed the pricing with Bob and came to a resolution that was fair to everyone. Overall we had a good experience.
Description of Work: As a certified engineer, Bob provided a detailed report and drawing of recommended work to be done so that another contractor could provide an estimate of the cost to complete the recommended repairs. In order to have a full understanding of the low spot in the floor between two of our interior rooms and what repairs might be needed, Bob inspected inside the house and spent time thoroughly looking at the respective area inside the crawlspace and explaining things to my husband and I while we accompanied him throughout the house.

He scheduled a visit to assess the structure of my condo the day after I called to accommodate my plans to be out of town. He arrived promptly and worked quickly. He spoke to my contractor soon after to tell him that it was safe to proceed with the project. He advised my contractor on the necessary size of the beam and options for connecting the beam to the other ceiling structures. He later sent the paperwork with his assessment of the project and his seal certifying the project.
Description of Work: Bob certified that it was safe to move a load-bearing post for a kitchen renovation and redistribute the weight with a steel beam.

He called me on Sat. morning to say that he could drop by that day to look at my basement support. His comments said my structure appears to be .k for the most part. While this was good to hear, I was quickly unimpressed by him as his final price to me was far more than I was expecting. He was at my house for less than 30 mins, yet he had no problem charging me for 1.5 hours. When I asked him to explain his rationale behind that time, he said the travel time from his location in Decatur to my home in LaVista Park can be very congested and time consuming on weekends. Gimme a break! Had I know he was going to nickel and dime me like that, I certainly would not have agreed to a Sat. appointment, and I would have made sure I scheduled him for a time of the day in the middle of the week when I knew traffic would be at it's minimal.
Description of Work: Whatever knowledge or comments he may have had about the basement structural issues I was concerned about in the first place, was overshadowed in the end by the less than favorable impression he left with me as he told me my final bill was for $140. I already knew there was a one hour minimum ($90) which I was fully prepared to pay prior to his visit. But considering that he was at my house for less than 30 mins, and lived less than 5 miles from me, I find his add-on charge to be a bit insulting.

I liked dealing with him. On the first phone call, he thoroughly explained what he planned to do, and if he found problems, what my next steps could be. It was difficult to set an appointment, because he was busy for several days with a big project, but once we got back in touch with each other, he was at my house in several hours, which I really appreciated. I liked how he took the time to explain things, what he was looking for, and suggestions for improvements. I'd definitely recommend him to friends.
Description of Work: I was afraid my house was beginning to settle and cause problems with the floors and foundation. I had Robert come out and do a walk-through and then give his opinion on what (if anything) needed to be done. He inspected outside, inside, attic and crawlspace. Luckily, he concluded that everything was sound and nothing further needed to be done.

I spoke to Bob on the phone and had a leisurely conversation with him which immediately confirmed to me that he was the right guy for the job. A few days later he came out right on time. I told him about our rolling floors and the various remedies that had been suggested by the handymen I had previously spoken to. Then we went into the basement and crawlspace where he noted the poor original materials and workmanship on the framing of our house, but assured me that structurally, the building was sound. Basically we are living in a house that will last, and our floors, though annoyingly warped, will hold us up. Before he left, he sat down and wrote out a comprehensive list of his findings and the things we had talked about doing to make the floors better.
Description of Work: Bob came out to our house, examined the floor joists in the basement and the jacks/bracing in the crawl space. He looked over the whole house and provided a written assessment and options/recommendations for dealing with our situation.

Bob was very personable and his knowledge on the subject was immediately apparent. He laid out all my options and didn't pressure me in the least to spend more money than was necessary. If I should need the services of a structural engineer in the future, I will not hesitate to call on him again.
Description of Work: Bob came to look at our 1957 ranch. I had been noticing cracks along an axis of the house and needed his opinion on how concerned I should be. He came out one Saturday morning and spent an hour looking under the house and talking to us about possible causes and solutions.

Robert is obviously an expert in the field of structural engineering. We discussed my concrete wall problem in great detail. He is very busy at this time, and we need to find a time when we are both available to inspect the wall.
Description of Work: I called Robert to discuss a structural problem with a large concrete retaining wall. He will call me back to schedule a date that I will be in town to have him inspect the wall. Robert was extremely well versed in the problems that could be causing the problem and I will definitely have him inspect the wall and give me advice on a solution to the problem.

Very personable, on time, thorough and provided an un-biased opinion. Robert speaks easily in nonprofessional and technical terms. Answers questions without making you feel unintelligent for asking. He also offers suggestions on how to monitor situations (cracks in walls), alternative solutions for fixing issues, and questions to ask regarding how (answers to the how), the procedures, materials, before others perform work on your home. Prices are reasonable as of 2/2006 he was $80 hour and $40 for survey work. I was unclear that travel time was also charged and at what rate. I suppose I will find out when I get the bill. We spent 2 hours plus travel time together. Originally I was unclear what "travel time" meant. It is the mileage traveled to your home. His fee for mileage was .40 for 21 miles, more than fair in my eyes. The breakdown of the billing was engineering, technician, and mileage. I highly recommend him due to his professionalism, knowledge and fairness in billing. A great experience!
Description of Work: Orginial report: Robert Turton came to my home, built in 1953, to examine the support system for potential problems. (I am considering B-dry to fix my spongy floors.). He was very detailed and thorough. Robert has followed up with me and will provide a written report on the structure and support system of my home. Follow up: This is a follow-up report for the billing of a structural engineering appointment at my home. Plus, Robert Turton called the persons I hired to do the work on my home. Furthermore, he made a follow-up call to me acknowledging he had made contact with the contractor. In regards to billing it was very fair.
