hardwood floor

. We agreed to pay $1330. to have the wood installed. The price was supposed to include the entire installation. The contractor showed up with our wood, several bundles of it were torn open with wood exposed in an apparent fork lift accident. First you would think that the installer would not take product like that and secondly Floormax would not send product like that. When we asked about it the contractor said oh don't worry we will just blend that in. (keep in mind the stuff cost almost $4.00 a SQ'). So we pressed on. The wood has to sit for week or so before it's ready to go in, so Monday morning the installer shows up to install the wood. He is supposed to be here between 7:30 and 8:00. He gets here at 10:00. To add insult to injury he doesn't have his Miter Saw and asks to use mine. Like an idiot I let him. The first day seems to go ok, they had to rip out some carpet to start in the great room. I was able to watch them most of the time. He says he will be here the next day at 7:30 and gets here at 9:15. this time he has his saw, but asks to use mine again because his is having a hard time cutting the wood that he supposedly installs all the time. Tuesday I had to leave for an evening appointment and couldn't watch them so I left them with my wife. They are now working on the dining room which is a hard wood floor that needs to be torn up first. To do this they break out a saw and start cutting into the wood to break it up. She approaches them at 4:00 and tells them that she has to go out at 5:30 and she can tell there is no way they can finish in the time left. They assure here that this is not the case and they will be finished before then. 6:00 pm and they are still trying to finish up. She tells them that she really has to go and would rather they not rush. They finally left at close to 7:00. The house was left in a huge mess. Saw dust everywhere.. We had to take every glass and plate out of the china cabinet and clean it. Saw dust coated everyting, apparently they have never heard of a drop cloth. They gave my wife a receipt for items they needed to finish up and she wrote them a check because she was in such a state and so late for here appointment. Upon final inspection of the list of items on the bill they had asked payment for was wood putty, stain and get this a saw blade! later we found a big scrape in the arch of the dining room wall where they had hit the china cabinet when moving it back. The walls along the floorboards were all marked up from their floor jack. The quarter round and threshold that he puts down don't match in color and the threshold is sort of a flat piece of wood that has been nailed to bridge the gap between the tile and hardwood. It sits at an angle and flexes when you step on it. Several pieces of the expensive flooring are face nailed for no apparent reason and are under the dining room carpet so no one can see. They didn't putty any of the nail holes. So now I'm trying every avenue to get someone to fix some of the problems we are having. The K&M guy is suddenly in the witness protection program and the floormax rep at the time his name is Shon Massey, is on the phone with my wife saying why did you write him a check if you wern't happy with the work. To make a long story short, 5 months later we finally the K&M guy to come back out and look at some of the issues, Shon must have threatened him. I was amazed we actually got him to come out. I had already set my expectations low knowing that he was not going to do much if anything, he sure as heck wasn't going to fix drywall or paint. I settled for him removing the quarter round that didn't match and replacing it with some that I had purchased from Home Depot. He did a half a** job of installing that and left the remaining scrap in the driveway which my wife drove over when she pulled out of the garage. Luckely she didn't get a flat tire. In November to my amazement the VP of sales (I think they have 2 guys that sell) Jason called me apparently he had become aware that our installation had not gone so well and he wanted to make things right. They sent out another guy to look at our floor. The guy looked at my floor and said " well we can cut the boards out that were face nailed and glue some boards back." I said "I don't think so, that's one of the reasons we replaced the wood floor in the first place". So I asked Jason if instead of ripping out boards would they pay for the guy to replace the threshold instead. No problem but first you have to order and pay for it. So I order it and pay for it. They sent it to me over the holidays. I call up to make an appointment to have their guy install the threshold. Now the story is well we aren't paying for the install we paid to ship the threshold to your house so we are not obligated to do anything else for you. When I asked why the story had changed they said I can't be pleased. So it's the customer is too demanding now. So while I was surprised that they called me up to try and fix some of the problems, they fell way short of actually resolving much of anything. To date after paying the idiot installer an extra $166.00 for stuff that he shouldn't have been paid for and several pieces of threshold and quarter round and now for threshold that actually matches the color of the floor, I will still have to pay someone to come install the threshold. Oh and I still have to do some drywall and painting. What a lovely experience... and yes I'm the unreasonable one. I don't write these type things much because they take time and I am in the construction business so I know things can go wrong at times... I would like to save someone a little pain if I can. Check out the guy you hire before you commit to doing business with them. I forgot this rule, its easy to get caught up in the project at hand. Sometimes paying a little more for the install is the cheapest way.
Description of Work: We bought some very nice imported hard wood from these people. They told us that we had to use their installer to get the manufacturer to cover the warranty. Their installers company name is K&M Floor Covering. We tried to find some info on him but all we could come up with was a police record where he was charged for starving his horse. If you feel compelled to buy from them then please get your own installer and make sure he is reputable. Also make sure that anything that is agreed upon is in writing. Do not take their word as it means nothing.
