They use the Angie's discount offer to pull in customers for the equivalent of a "bait and switch" routine. I made the mistake of hiring them and they performed unprofessional, shoddy work.
Description of Work: Repaired eves and gutters to roof of a ranch house; also replaced outdoor lighting. (I do not remember the exact date or price and our house burned, destroying the records.)

They did fix the drywall and did paint over that section. Then they went and painted the entire room which I did not want. He was delayed and would come in at 10 or 10:30 in the morning and leave at 4:00pm. They stretched it out over three days and then said that it was $3,000 worth of work. I said, no it wasn't. I could of brought someone in to do drywall work and paid them $1,000 in cash and got the work done. It was horrible and he was always trying to get me to hire him for other things. And his prices were way out of line. I did bring him back for a couple of things and he didn't fit the sink and granite piece in correctly. And of course he stretched that out over two days as well. So I decided not to use him again.
Description of Work: I used Penney Brothers Construction last summer. I had a big deal coupon from Angie's List for $3,000 worth of work for $1500. I need some drywall repair work done.

They made a trip out but the let me know that they couldn't do the work for me at the on coupon because of the distance they needed to travel. I appreciated their honesty and got a refund. I am giving them a B because they didn't have their service area listed.

The work went a little slower than I expected and I did not like working with this company.
Description of Work: Project was to remove part of an old deck and re-work the remaing deck. The work went OK but I did not like dealing with this company. I agreed that I would take care of the clean up of the removed deck but found nails had been dropped in the deck area and on the drive at the front of my house, one of which was the cause of a flat tire. Months after the work was completed, I found areas of shotty work and nails I had to hammer in.

We completed a almost impossible task of re-building and making a terrible structure work just fine. The nails are most likely from the people who hauled off all related debris. Not us! Also pricing was a tremendous deal for this customer.

We originally bought an Angie's List Coupon for Penney Brothers. They were so busy that they couldn't schedule the work during that period when we could be home. We got a refund and called them back when it could be scheduled. They said that they would do the work for the original coupon price of $300 but when it took some added time, they asked for more. We purchased the stair unit and all of the parts that they told us they needed for the job but when the trim broke while they were removing the old stair unit, My husband had to go back to Home Depot for that . They did finish the Project, haul off the trash and the stairs work well. I would probably use them again but it would depend on the project.

See above. What was an initial commitment of 6 hours of work ultimately resulted in a repair job of approximately $1,500. In retrospect, I should have stopped the work and gotten a better estimate on the ultimate completion required. The final work product was fine and has weathered well.
Description of Work: Repair of siding and frame on on outside chimney. The repair job was delayed repeatly by other work and commitments as a result of the Angie special. The work finally resulted in a $1,500 cost to complete the work. In retrospect, I should have stopped the work and required a full estimate of what it would have taken to complete and ensured that it was not side tracked by other projects that the company had going on. The final work itself was fine and resulted in the result that I was actually looking for.

The service was very mediocre. They were very slow and inconsistent in the quality of the work. We found parts done well and other parts not done well. We had to call them on the parts that were not done well. It seemed like they became uninterested in finishing the project. I had to renegotiate the contract to be a fixed price as opposed to an hourly rate because it would have been very expensive because of the rate they work. We were disappointed with them.
Description of Work: We had a leak in our basement. They had to put in a new floor and new paneling. They repainted the room. They also had to install a beam and did great work on that. We also had them install some shelving in the cabinets, stained the back deck, cleaned the gutters, and repaired some rotted wood.

The fact of the matter is that these customers wanted something cheap. They purchased the coupon that was a great deal but I guess that was not good enough. They proceeded to do their best at getting me to match pricing from some other comapany that obviously had little experience in the business. They were successful. I gave them a ton of work for practically nothing.Their comments are erroneous. I am not intrested in dealing with them ever again. End of story!

We purchased a coupon for 40 hrs carpentry work to replace the steps, deck boards and railings on our small front porch. We agreed on an hourly rate up front for any hours exceeding the initial 40 hrs purchased. Although the materials could have been delivered free by the lumber company, Mr. Penney indicated that he wanted to go pickup new materials and deliver himself, while his workers performed the demolition work. The demolition work was performed in only a few hours, but since there was no new materials, they waited several hours for them to arrive, with one worker even taking a nap in his truck. Once the materials arrived they quickly replaced the steps and boards, all of which were accomplished in one day. We picked out the style of railings, including pictures, and provided to Mr. Penney. The carpenters started constructing the railings the next day, but they were not the style that we had picked out. We pointed out this errror to the carpenter and was told that he only knew how to construct one style, and so he continued to construct it. We immediately contacted Mr. Penney and informed him of the situation. Two man days (16 hours) plus materials were lost because of the failure to construct the railings as requested. He called and stopped his workers, and a few days later he had a really good carpenter come in and construct the correct style railing. With the project nearly complete, we were asked to inspect the boards to check if any needed replacing. We marked about 50% of the step boards and a few on the porch that either should not have been installed to start with or were split during the installation. Another 2 man days (16 hours) was spent to replace the boards. Due to the railings already installed, the screws for the replacement boards had to be put in at an angle that could not be made flush. Mr. Penney advised us to wait six months before we performed any painting. During this time, boards started popping up. We discovered that although these boards had the correct number of screws, the screws were not secured into the floor joists below. We had to replace a total of one pound of screws for the porch and step boards. Mr Penney recognized our concerns about the length of total time spent on the job, and the multiple errors performed by his workers, and allegedly took that into account when he finalized the total additional amount we owed him. We paid Mr. Penney a total of $4072.60, to include the initial $1,499.00. Total costs worked out to roughly $38.50 per sf, which we consider excessive.
Description of Work: The job was for 40 hours of carpentry labor only to remove and replace the flooring and steps on our small front porch (166.5 sf). Materials were paid separately to the lumber company. We added some minor structural repairs that were discovered during the work.

It was fine. The paint job was nice the curtain rod was hung properly. I asked them to replace the out door spot lights that required a very tall ladder. They made me aware that the whole fixture needed replacing. As this was unexpected, I had to go to Home Depot to get a new fixture and they charged me for the time it took me to drive there and get it. This was above the original cost for the coupon. Overall I think it was pretty pricey for what they did and can likely find better options in the future.

When you use a coupon company, sometimes they get overwhelmed with customers and Penny Brothers was no exception. We waited for them to finish up several previous projects and then ours began. Overall it went very smooth and the crew was very pleasant to work with. They showed up each day as planed and worked in the very heat of the Atlanta Summer. They were not the fastest crew but they do pay attention to the detail to get it right the first time which evens out the speed. Overall they did a good job for us and yes we would hire them again and plan to very soon. They painted, fixe siding, rebuilt our Trex deck, did some electrical repairs and we were overall very satisified with what we received for what we paid. I think they were very fair.
Description of Work: We bought the coupon as we had several different home projects that we wanted to have taken care of. Kevin Penny and crew to the rescue. We received good value for our money. Kevin and his crew showed up each and every day (which is a rariety in the general contractor area) worked a full day each and every day and finished each project in a timely and professional manor. Of course we had several While Your At It's and there were several add on's and again all were made with proposal and taken care of in proper manor. Penny Brothers is not the most expensive nore the least expensive but you will receive good value for your money. We would and plan to use them again.

Never received the service for which I paid.
Description of Work: The Big Deal for the handyman service was paid for, but service was never received. The Big Deal had a time limit of 6 months from date of purchase, which in my case was March 9, 2012 expiration. My nephew, who was helping me with projects at my house, contacted the company several times starting in January, 2012 and arranged an appointment date, which they did not show up. He contacted them again and the company said we had gotten confused with the appointment date and he scheduled another time in February. Again they did not show up at the appointed time. Again, we left messages and was finally contacted again and was asked if this was from the Angie's List deal for their company and was told yes, it was. The company stated they were extremely busy, because of the Angie's List deal, but would contact us to set up another appointment date in March and stated they would honor the contract even if it was after March 9th, since there had been some scheduling difficulties. Messages were left several times in March and April with no return call to set up an appointment. I finally gave up and decided that I had just lost the $199.00 that I paid. I certainly do not recommend this company.

I had talked with the owner about all the projects, especially about weather stripping the large front wood door. This was particularly important because the standard weather stripping you can buy at the big box stores doesn't seem to work. It makes it hard to shut the door, so I needed a better solution. The owner had suggested one solution that sounded reasonable and I thought that he would be the one doing the work. Turns out, he sent his son (I think) and another very young guy. They took care of the dry rot and worked on the storm door as well as they could. It doesn't shut all the way, but it's a little better. However, for the front door, they bought the standard weather stripping from a big box store and installed. To this day, I have to force it to shut the door. They couldn't repair the screens on the front porch, but offered to replace them. They took measurements and told me that they would get back to me on the price. Never heard from them again.
Description of Work: I had a few items on the list including removing some dry rot in the basement, fixing a storm door that wouldn't close, weather stripping the front door, and repairing/replacing some screens on the front porch.

.The company impressed me at first. As soon as I purchased the coupon for handyman services I was contacted. Brandon was responsive and seemed to understand the job I needed done. I even had pictures of how I wanted the lattice to look. I needed lattice put up on 2 sides of my deck. It was a job we both agreed would only take a few hours. The deck is already built and I just needed the lattice for some privacy. Brandon arrived on time. He was supposed to bring someone with him but they were sick. I even said we could re-schedule if he needed someone to help him. To make a long story short...Brandon was at my home from 9am-8:00pm! I had to purchase additional time because he moved so slowly. At 8:00 pm only the top part of the lattice had been put up. He had not even started the bottom half. I finally told him I needed to get dinner on the table and just to finish what he could. I also could not afford to pay another $400 which is what it would have cost to finish the job. Only half of the lattice was put up. There were nails and wood scraps left all over the deck. I was in udder disbelief that the job wasn't completed hours ago. He kept saying it was hard for him to line the lattice up. We spent a total of $800 for a job that wasn't finished. That includes the materiasl . Half of the lattice is still on my deck. It has taken me months to write a review. I was so angry and didn't want to even talk about how bad this experience was. I wish I could show pictures of this job. Unbelievable. I will never buy a coupon from Angie's List again. I guess you do get what you pay for.
Description of Work: The service should have been, to add lattice to the upper and lower sides of our deck. We only needed it on the side parts of our deck-not the entire deck. The dimensions were approx. 4 ft by 8 ft.

Kevin Penney came out to give us an estimate on replacing our steps, arriving as scheduled. He explained to us what was wrong with our steps and what needed to be done. We also had him check out our deck, which he said was up to code and appeared to be in good shape. The following week, Kevin and his crew came and accomplished everything we had discussed: the old steps were removed, new wider steps were built with a landing, a gate was added at the top of the steps, everything on our deck was re-nailed, and the 12" concrete landing that was the base of the old steps was broken up and removed. All of this was accomplished in one day, and we now have safe, secure steps that look great. The crew cleaned up everything before leaving and even filled in the hole left when the concrete was removed. Overall our experience with Kevin Penney was excellent. We could not be happier with our new steps.
Description of Work: The steps to our deck needed replacing. We have a deck off the upper story of our house, and the steps went straight up, with no landing. The steps were also not adequately supported, so they were very unstable. Kevin Penney replaced the steps with ones that were wider, properly supported and included a landing halfway down. He also built a gate for us for the top of the steps and removed the concrete base of the old steps.

It took him at least 3 weeks to return first call I made to set up appt. . I finally called again and he came out following week. Took too long for him to return first call(3 wks) and then when he came out to see what projects I needed done, told me he'd be back in a week or 10 days.
