Our only suggestion to Exovations would be to have a complete, final invoice at walk through so correct payment is made the first time. We had two add ons to our original quote and the amount we paid at walk through differed from the actual balance. For some reason we had to get the check for the balance to them in a matter of hours for some sort of deadline so we ended up having to pay the balance with a credit card over the phone. Exovations can aleviate this problem by have a "final invoice" ready to go at walk through.
The end result definitely exceeded our expectations and after 19+ years, our house looks new again.
I would say that this is by far and away, our best experience with any construction trade vendor EVER.
Smoothly as hoped.
Another thing that I really appreciated of Exovations was their formality in writing and signing their contract. Other contractors gave us written estimates that could hardly qualified as such. Exovations not only provided us with a detailed itemized estimate, but also had a very well written legal contract that made us feel VERY comfortable in doing business with them. They also offered an amazing guarantee on their work, and they didn't require us to pay a penny up front. The complete job would be paid up upon completion and no sooner. I was very pleased. At this point the only down side was that, due to their workload, they couldn't start the work as soon as we would've liked them to.
Soon after, Joy called me and informed me that our assigned project manager, Tony Fricks, would meet with me to discuss the schedule and other details. This was another great experience. Tony was right on time and did a review of all the items covered in the contract I had with Joy. After this he gave me a detailed schedule with start date and finish date, and what work would be done when. His instructions were very useful.
A few weeks later, just when they said they would, the crew showed up and got to work. The whole crew was very professional as well, very nice and polite. Tony was in constant communication with us making sure we were happy. He even came over more than a couple of times upon request to do a walk through and make sure everything was looking like we expected it to look. I was very impressed when the crew would realize something needed to be done and would just go ahead and do it, because that's how you do things right. Our gutters were replaced completely although our contract only specified replacing the downspouts. A couple window sills were rotted and could not be painted that way. Our contract did not include replacing the sills, but the crew decided to do it anyway. Also, they were not required to re-paint the interior of the house in the areas where the window installation affected the walls, but they did that regardless as well. Any incidents that occurred were taken care of immediately (for example, a little bit of paint was spilled on the carpet, an existing window was cracked, paint was slightly scratched. And all these incidents were reported to us and taken care of immediately.
The whole project was delivered right on time. Tony did a final walk through with us and made sure we were 100% satisfied with the work.
Thank you Joy and Tony for your excellent work and professionalism!
I would recommend Exovations in a heartbeat, and I would consider them my only option if I ever had to get any similar work done.
"Thank you so much for your review and your kind words about our company and staff members. Please let us know if you need anything in the future and we certainly appreciate your business!!"
I met with three or four different contractors to get estimates and an idea of the people I would be turning my home over to. My sales consultant Joy impressed us right from the get go with her knowledge, professionalism, and understanding of what we wanted. Joy made some excellent recommendations that I had not considered nor had any of the other vendors I had met. She was never pushy and I felt she was genuinely interested in providing us the best value and long term benefits of a home renovation when it came time to sell our home. I started out with the idea of only replacing my siding and ended up with new and bigger gutters, a badly needed replacement garage door, a new patio door that had rotted trim work on the outside, and new shutters and painted windows all around the house.
My project manager Jim came out to meet me shortly after and did a complete review of the proposed work and validated the materials necessary to complete the job. Jim provided me with an implementation schedule that was adhered to except for a few days of a rain delay. He worked with me on each request or question I had about the work and never came across as defensive or looking for a way not to comply. In fact it was just the opposite, he typically did what we asked for and it usually meant doing more with no added expense. I never got the standard "that is going to be extra" response from Jim or Joy. The entire experience was a pleasure and the exterior of our home looks better today than it did when we moved in 16 years ago.
I would also like to mention that craftsmanship of the Excavations siding installers. Every piece of siding was installed per manufacturers guidelines and they also went out of their way to make recommendation to maximize the appearance of the siding based on their years of installation experience.
We are very happy with the work Excavations did for us and I would recommend them to anyone without hesitation.

I hear every job like this has a punch list. Ours did, too. However, I feel some items should not have been on the punch list in the first place. They include sanding and repainting areas where old paint was flaking, replacing a cornice because the repair job they did looked terrible, and cleaning window panes after making them dirty in the normal course of work. This last item was especially disappointing. The outside window panes of the house were clean when Exovations arrived. They did not clean them when done. Nor would they clean them when asked on the punch list, saying they don't clean windows.
Speaking of windows, Exovations did not clean the storm windows or the opposite windows even though that was in the contract. When given this on the punch list, the end result was that they cleaned the windows badly. I had to show them the bad work, have them try again, and even give them my own window cleaning gear because theirs was not effective.
Finally, there are the little things that the project manager said I was "pretty particular" about but for which I disagree. Examples include the following, which make me wonder whether to recommend Exovations to others: You know how you paint in a gap between two pieces of wood that aren't flush with one another by painting thicker than on the surface? Exovations didn't. When presented with ground cover, do you try to avoid stepping on the plants as much as possible? Exovations didn't.
Follow-up to provider's response:
The same day the company responded here, a construction manager called to look at things with me. When he came over, he agreed with everything I said, saying it all should have been done in the first place, and scheduled a day to fix it all. He also said if my plants die, they will replace them. Their follow-up work was to sand and paint two areas where they had simply painted over flaking paint, to clean storm windows per the original contract, and to clean window panes they made dirty in the normal course of work (he said they should always completely clean windows they work with). After their follow-up work, the flaking areas still show old flakes, but not as bad. They did paint over them thick enough to cover them adequately. The flaking isn?t as bad, but it obviously was not sanded smooth. All the storm windows but one are now clean, with the one not clean having been worked on, but not well. All the window panes were cleaned well. I thought I would receive a follow-up phone call after this, but didn?t. After talking with numerous homeowners, I conclude my original review and ratings should stand as is.
"September 6, 2011 Member- I appreciate your assessment of our performance. The issues you describe should have been addressed by our project manager. I apologize that they were not. I will have our Construction Manager call you today to schedule a time to review these items and resolve them to your satisfaction. I appreciate your business. October 6, 2011 Member – We are extremely disappointed to hear that you are still unsatisfied. All indications were that you were happy with the touch ups. What is puzzling to us is that you choose to communicate through your reviews. If you are still not happy, we will come back and make sure you are happy with our work. You spent your hard earned money with us and we appreciate your business. We are confident that we can make you happy with your paint project. That’s why we offer a lifetime workmanship warranty on everything we do. Whatever we did to make you feel as if you can’t pick up the phone and give us call, I sincerely apologize. Feel free to call the office and ask for the owner or call our Construction Manager (with whom you met with) directly and either of them will be happy to schedule another round of touch ups. We look forward to hearing from you."
"Thank you for your review. I am not clear as to why the wood would have holes or need to be sanded. Decking material should be finish grade and not require any sanding. I will have our Construction Manager call you to schedule a time to inspect these issues and resolve them to your satisfaction."
All done in 3 working days. Outstanding team.
UPDATE: A satisfactory new picture window was finally installed in September, a full SIX (6) months after the original work was done. During that time, we were shown 3-4 windows, which also had defects and were unsatisfactory. The installers who came to our home with the windows said that there had been several other defective windows that they had rejected in their own warehouse without bothering to tell us about them. While Jim McCulluch was initially good about contacting us about the status of the replacement window, he ultimately dropped the ball in handling the situation. He tried to hand the instillation job off to the manufacturing company, who had no real understanding what we were dealing with. He did not tell his supervisor about the difficulties we were having and made no additional efforts that were visible to us to make sure the job was handled correctly. Each time someone was scheduled to install the window, Jim said he would "try to show up" and never did, nor did he ever call to see how the instillation had gone. He was always surprised to hear from me that things were still not fixed. In the end, we were told that the factory that had been making the defective windows was finally at the end of their contract and we were given a window made in another facility which produced higher quality windows. The instillation was finally completed by Exovations after we contacted Joy Branch yet again (we had to return to her 2-3 times during this process to try to move things along) and she finally handed the situation over to the owner of the company. Jim McCulluch's supervisor handled the instillation nicely and we were given a $50 gift card for dinner and a personal apology from the owner of the company. While we were pleased to have the company acknowledge their shortcomings, it was too little too late and we will not be using this company for any future work on our house, as we once planned. If you choose to use Exovations, and especially Jim McCulluch, be sure to stay carefully on top of things from the beginning to the end and do not hesitate to go further up in management if things are not handled to your satisfaction.
