We were apprehensive about contacting a contractor because of all the unscrupulous contractors one hears about on the evening news but just at the time we needed to find a contractor I happened on a TV ad by Exovations. It was well done but what really caught my ear was no payment was expected until the job was done and I was satisfied. We later learned that items such as windows and doors that needed to be special ordered were an exception to that but special orders didn't apply to what we wanted done. After looking the company up on the Internet and checking Angie's List, I e-mailed Exovations. They called the following day and we met with their sales rep here at home a few days later. In total we met with the sales rep three times. He arrived on time, was personable and informative. E-mails and questions by phone to him during that period received quick responses. We weren't left hanging. At the end of these discussions we felt we could combine our three projects into one. We signed a contract and was given a date and time that the project manager who would be responsible for coordinating the renovations would meet with us. He also arrived on time, was personable and informative, and before he left he handed us a list as to when materials would be delivered, when work teams [carpenters, stone masons, painters, roofers, gutter guard installers, rain pan installers] would arrive and, giving allowance for bad weather, a completion date and time to meet for the final review of the project. The carpenters, stonemasons, painters and roofers arrived as scheduled and we were astounded as to how quickly and professionally they worked. The same evaluation applies to the gutter guard people although they arrived and completed their part two days later than scheduled. We were amazed and, understandably, very pleased. For whatever reason the rain pan people just couldn't seem to get here to do their install on time. Their part, which took just a few hours, didn't take place until a week after the scheduled project completion date. Our only disappointment in the entire project was unplanned for structure carpentry needed on one chimney frame and the number of extra sheets of plywood needed to set up the chimneys [11] and the roofs [13] at an additional $45 each over our contract price. This, however, can't be laid at the feet of Exovations as rot in the existing plywood couldn't be seen and evaluated until the chimney siding and roof had been stripped of the original covers. We were made aware of the possibility of this additional cost prior to any of the work being started. The house is about 23 years old and we found little or no flashing around the chimneys. I mention it only because such additional charges are unavoidable. Are we happy? Couldn't be happier. Would we recommend or use Exovations In the future? You bet!
Description of Work: 1. Remove siding covering two chimneys and replace it with stacked stone. 2. Cover the front porch with flag stone and replace or cover the steps to it with flagstone and the porch sides with stacked stone. 3. A new roof for the main house, breezeway, garage and the cupola on top of the garage.

I had new Hardie Plank siding installed by another contractor at the end of July. After getting several quotes for painting I went with Exovations. Unfortunately with all the rain they could not come out until October. Everyone was behind in painting jobs. They were suppose to start Monday Oct 28. They called on on Thursday Oct 24 to see if they could come out and pressure wash the house on Friday (which they did). They cam back on Saturday and painted the house.. Porch rail was done on Monday and Tuesday. Painter came back to finish the trim and rail painting. Gutters were install the next day. I had to have them come back out and replace some of the bannisters and paint side door (it was suppose to be a different color)
Description of Work: Exovations installed a new porch and stair railing. They wrapped the porch columns with Hardie Plank. They painted the house.Installed new gutters.

The job did not go as well as expected. The first crew showed up late in the mornings so they could not work a full day. They then got upset because I called the foreman to express concern about the job before it was completed. They rushed through the job missing areas and doing a very sloppy job in other areas. A second crew came back to do the clean up job with over 20 areas needing attention. The second crew came back 2 weeks later to address the failed caulked seams. At this time the foreman told me to expect it to fail again which is has. There are still areas I will need to repaint that were missed that I did not see during inspections. I allowed the crews to use our downstairs bathroom during the work and found that the first crew had tried out our exercise equipment leaving paint on the elliptical machine from their shoes.

Wonderful! The person who presented the product told us a time range for the project and he was exactly right. We had a couple of issues pop up during the project and people responded quickly and resolved everything. We couldn't be happier! We will definitely use them again, as they also install garage doors, which is our NEXT project. Thanks, Exovations. We are now loyal customers!

All employees I interacted with were professional and very helpful. The project manager, Kenneth, laid out every item in the contract, and aside from having to begin the demo 2 days late, finished the project within the same number of days. The on-site construction supervisor was superior. He and his crew worked every day--even if they had to wait out rainfalls! Shawn kept me informed of every issue that came up, and explained all items completely, allowing us to make informed decisions. They cleaned up each day, and did not leave a mess around my backyard or driveway. We left our security cameras in place (attached to the structure under the deck boards) during the entire renovation, and they were not damaged or touched at all--never stopped working! Although the composite is pricier, the product guarantee is good, the unexpected changes to the work that had to be made during the actual construction were made without any hassle, and overall wonderful look and feel of the decking made the experience a good one. We would hire this company to do future work, and recommend to others.
Description of Work: Replaced approximately 600 sq ft of wooden decking and stairs, and replaced with composite. Structure for deck remained, but stringers for stairs were replaced.

I've had them come out a couple times for quotes. I can see that this company does outstanding work by all the great comments, unfortunately, the last two times I've received quotes from them they are just way higher then anyone else. Although cheaper is not necessarily better, I am wanting to find reasonable and comparable prices when I get work done on my house.

Thank you for your feedback. I understand your frustration with the difference in proposals especially if they do not provide clear specifications. Here is an excerpt from a recent article posted on NARI Daily 5 Remodel that explains the current market conditions and pricing well. Here is an excerpt from the article. “In the residential remodeling industry, everyone was affected by the economic downturn in one way or another. Our revenues went down and our expenses (insurance, materials, overhead) went up. Many companies cut wages and reduced staff, and a good many closed their doors forever. The products we needed to perform your remodels were also affected. Manufacturers backed off on production. Many suppliers and stores that sold these materials closed. Often now, when we need certain products for your remodel, we need to order them and wait weeks for them to be fabricated, instead of quickly getting them "off the rack." Then there's the challenge involving workers. In short, our industry has very little new blood, and much of the old blood have priced themselves out of the market. When the housing market tanked, many construction professionals took other forms of work, if they were able to find it. Scheduling plumbers, electricians, tile-layers and other trade-specific contractors that do quality work became difficult due to everyone’s smaller staff and rising backlogs. Meanwhile, diminishing numbers of young people did not see good reasons to enter the trades, nor did their parents or guidance counselors steer them this way. When we began to re-hire, we realized that you homeowners would no longer throw money at your homes, and therefore we couldn't pay the kinds of wages we paid before the recession. Yet many of the experienced professionals we would like to hire don't want to work for these wages. I just interviewed one who was effectively making about $10 an hour trying to run his own business. He told me he expected $35 an hour from me. So here we are. There are fewer of us who qualify as experienced, legitimate remodeling contractors. Yes, you can opt for the companies who are available quickly and cheaply. But do so at your own risk. Here's why: That "fast and cheap" contractor may be staffed by people who used to work in new construction. Remodeling and new construction are entirely different fields. New construction has a logical progression and is performed without people living in the home. Remodeling requires additional skills: We must understand the existing structure and the impact that alterations may have on it. We need to carefully deconstruct before blending in the new work so it that fits the home's existing style and does not cause problems to the structure or systems. And, of course, we often do this work while you are living in the home. We therefore need to take special precautions for your health and safety. All this takes extra effort, planning and time. You get what you pay for. Much of the work we're doing today involves replacing shoddy construction done during the building boom, when homeowners would hire anyone who could fog a mirror. That work is falling apart. The work performed by cheap contractors today will hold up just as badly in the long run. Third, no truly professional remodeler — one that was around 10 years ago and will still be around 10 years from now — can match the kinds of lowball proposals the cheap contractors are offering. Contractors that pay for highly skilled labor and quality materials, along with all the required taxes, insurances (for your protection), licenses, permits and educational expenses, logically must charge more.”

Overall I liked working with the folks from Exovations. The PM Jim was very knowledgable and on time for every meeting. The person who came to do the initial quote was very detail oriented and took lots of notes and make sketches of everything that needed replacing. Unfortunately they miscalculated some of the materials needed and the project cost went over the original estimate by almost 20% which was too much in my mind. I had to pull back on some additional work I had wanted to get done to cover the overage. The project turned out great and I felt like they did a really good job. I have recommended them but I have thrown in the caveat that they did not hit the original estimate and were pricey overall.

Thank you for your response. While we do not like to ask our clients for additional money for any project, there are times when we run into structural damage and/or additional rotted wood that could not be seen without removing other areas. Our contracts are detailed so that you know exactly what you are paying for and if any additional work is necessary, there should be no question as to whether it was included in the contract. We understand the unknowns of remodeling can be frustrating at times. We appreciate your business.

They were great! They are very pricey but I believe the reason why is because they are so thorough and safe and meet their city codes. Katie Ward is the woman that came out for the estimate and she was wonderful. They were very professional and timely in getting back to me. Katie actually called me to let me know she was on her way, I had called them the night before to let them know I would have to be a little late for the appointed time. She actually sat and waited for 15 minutes so we didn't have to reschedule, they were very accommodating! I was impressed!

Member - It is difficult to address a problem that occured 2 years ago. I believe you purchased an EXOVISION Architectural Rendering through the Angie's List Big Deal. EXOVISION is a drawing showing what your home would look like after our work is performed. The process is great for people who have a hard time envisioning what a renovation to the exterior of their home would look like especially if we are adding a porch, changing material types, adding stone, or changing colors. You were expecting a full set of architectural plans that involved adding additional square footage to your home. We informed you that this was outside the service offering we provide and did not provide a proposal. Because you believed you were mislead by the Angie's List Big Deal, we suggested you contact Angie's List and receive a refund.

Everyone involved with the project were most professional. Job was completed on time and on budget. We would definitely use this company for future projects.
Description of Work: Everyone--- from the estimator to the project manager to the painters ---were most helpful and professional. Everything was completed as promised and on time. The project manager took great care to look at all areas of the house prior to scheduling. We needed extra repair work on the columns on the front porch. He explained what they would do and warned us that extra charges might be needed once the repair work started. Great care was taken to protect our landscaping. Painters cleaned up completely each day. Final walk about with the project manager was meticulous and no detail was overlooked. And no extra charges. So project was done on time and on budget. Would definitely not hesitate to use them again !,

These people came out, did a detailed consult, explaining the different kind of windows available, & what would be best for my house. They kept in contact & assigned me a salesman who was very attentive (for one window, no less!) I had had another of my windows replaced a few years ago by another company. They charged me $300 more, & put in a vinyl window, which does not go with the house. The window had to be custom made, which took about 4 weeks. No problem to me for quality. They showed up on time to install. They installed the window without damaging any of the molding, cleaned up, & took the old window away for disposal. The window is great. My house backs up to I-20 & the room was very noisy before. With the new window I don't hear anything & it really controls the temperature in the room. I really love these people. I would use them again for any other doors or windows I need replaced.
Description of Work: I needed one window replaced in a 100 year old house. Most companies would not even come out for an estimate for that! My windows all have all have detailed molding & ledges around them, so replacing windows is a tricky, messy affair.

It was one of the best experiences that I've ever had with a company. There were other companies quoting less on the price but I wanted the job to be done right and in a timely fashion. And Exovations did just that! They completed work in 3 & 1/2 days. Dumpster removed the next day. An Exovations' manager comes by for a final walk through to discuss work performed. If satisfied, you pay after work is done. I would highly recommend their services to others!
Description of Work: Exovations did a great job! Very professional and prompt service. A project manager was assigned to keep me up to date on daily progress. Front exterior siding was removed, replaced with CertainTeed siding, powerwashed & painted. I was given log-in/password information to their website to keep up with progress on work being performed. Notes were entered daily by the project manager. If I had any questions, I could always call and actually talk to project manager about any specific work being done that day.

Katie is the young lady who came out to speak with us. WE asked her a million questions and she was awesome. We narrowed down what we had in mind and she brought us several quotes. The most immediate for us was a roof quote. We obtained 3 quotes for roof replacement. Katie's quote was lower than our first quote but higher than our third. All aspects of a good roof replacement were there. We were in no way disappointed with the quality we were offered. . Because of an unexpected large repair expense - unrelated to Exovations, we had to put the other projects on hold. I would gladly talk with them again, especially Katie. She was a delight and really seemed to know her stuff.

Exovations was the 'general contractor', using subs for each phase. All the subs were on time and did a good job and cleaned up very well. A special mention is warranted for the project manager assigned to me (Charlie Whitfield) who was a JOY to work with. He was interested and VERY responsive to any question I had. I had a couple of issues which I brought to his atttention and he was on it. As with any home improvement, it's wise to question costs up front and don't take things for granted. The final result was a great job!

I called them and explained that I wanted a window enlarged and asked it they would do such a small job and they assured me that it was something they could do. I did have to wait about a week before they could get me an appointment. Katie Ward came out and was doubtful that they would want to install someone else's window if they weren't providing it. She asked if she could quote us on replacing all the windows and I asked if they were competitive because I found a good company with a good price. I said that I'd like her to go ahead and give us a rough quote because I really needed someone to enlarge this window and the other company wouldn't do it. I also asked her to quote a very large project we're going to do - rebuilding our deck and adding a roof. As she was looking at it, she did almost nothing but tell us the negatives (we'll have to replace these boards because they're not code, and they'll have to charge a fee to check for lead paint because our house is old) but said absolutely nothing positive (like suggest ideas to make it even better). My husband and I were chatting about the project and being friendly but she wasn't remotely friendly. She showed no interest in our vision (or general friendliness I usually receive from contractors - like 'oh, what a lovely view you have'. She was all serious.) It seemed from the moment she arrived she was trying to talk us out of using them. It was the strangest thing I had ever encountered. It's as if she didn't believe that we might actually hire them - no matter what I said. Both my husband and I just looked at each other and shook our heads in amazement after she left. But I had read very good reviews and thought well, maybe she's just a bad apple and likely would have hired them anyway just based on their other reviews. I was looking forward to getting their quotes. But it's been 10 days, so apparently they don't want to work for us. It's not like we were rude or the house is a shack or something. I couldn't figure it out. But, she did waste our time and set us back. I don't just call a bunch of random people. I pretty much decide who I'm going to use and then call them. So now I have to start from scratch. Very frustrating and very unprofessional.
