Shaun Phillips with ATS Painting was hired to paint the exterior of our home in June 2016. He's a very pleasant person, but his follow-up is terrible!!! There were several items that needed to be fixed and never completed. We made the HUGE mistake of paying him in full before he completed the job as he gave us the sob story of having to pay his crew. Big lesson learned here! We saw some online complaints, but decided to give him a chance anyway. We have reached out to him countless times through phone calls, texts, and emails. Sometimes he would respond and set up a time to come by and inevitably never shows up or has an excuse to cancel. Needless to say it's been over 14 months and we have gotten nowhere with him on completing these unfinished items. Now we are to the point of hiring another company to complete the job we paid Shaun and his crew to do. Unfortunately, we could NEVER recommend Shaun Phillips and ATS Painting.

In a word, terrible. Or maybe miserable. Holy cow, run away from this guy. I have never had to deal with someone this bad before. I would have have paid three times the price for someone trustworthy. The funny thing is my neighbor hired someone else to paint her house at the exact same time. She paid a little more, but has been happy for the last six months. I've been losing too much sleep on this Shawn Philips guy that I hired. I've had a rough go with this painter pretty much from the get go. He started painting the house exterior on Feb 28 (over six months ago). It was supposed to be a 3 day job. Unfortunately he was in Texas at the time (Feb 28 - Mar 02), even though he promised he would personally power wash, go over and inspect the house, and do all the caulking personally. Instead he sent out a crew and never actually came by. He knowingly painted over the dry rot that I specifically hired him to fix, and then pretended like there was no problem. I've had to call him out several times on the same wood, get up on my own ladder, push my finger into the wood. He's acknowledged the issue and said that he would fix it several times. The deck is already peeling after his paint/stain job, but he claims it is not his fault. He crew painted it the morning after a rain storm... I have verbally told him I will not make him redo the deck if he just finishes the other items. I just counted our text messages showing 14 times March 06 - Aug 28 that he has promised to come out and just never showed up. There were additional verbal commitments to come out made over the phone. He talks a good talk, always promises, but never delivers. There are a couple times where over periods of several weeks he even refused to respond to my text messages or phone calls. I finally had to call from a work phone with a different number. Lately I've threatened to take him to small claims court several times. All I get is an addition commitment from him that he will take care of it on "Monday".... When will this nightmare end?

I've waited to cool down a bit before writing this review. I wanted to be fair and not have my emotional state play into the review too much given our experience with ATS Painting borders on the absurd it was so bad. If you read no further... I DO NOT recommend these guys. Don't let them anywhere near your home! Please also note there are at least two complaints filed against this outfit with the Better Business Bureau (neither of which were my doing, so there may be another soon). Overall, the deck looked great when initially completed and the interior paint ultimately came out looking good as well. However, we had a series of significant issues. The real problems started when ATS painted ALL the interior trim/doors/wainscoting/plantation shutters/etc... with latex paint. However, these had originally been painted with an oil based paint. So, in places the new paint would peel off in ribbons and almost everywhere it came off when bumped or handled. Shaun admitted the mistake and immediately agreed to fix it (great we thought). Unfortunately, "fixing" took over three months. And, during those months literally dozens of times Shaun would tell us he'd be working at our home and then would just fail to show up. So, for the duration our home was "being worked on", but on any given day we'd never know if someone would actually be working. What made this additionally burdensome was at the time my wife was about 5 months pregnant. And, as the painters were using chemicals to strip off their initial latex paint job, we couldn't live in our home. So, for the duration we stayed in a variety of hotels and friend's guest rooms ? hoping Shaun would step up and finish the job he'd started. Adding insult to injury, in the midst of this ordeal, Shaun left town (we discovered after the fact) for a 5 day vacation in Mexico. After about 12 weeks of "someone may or may not work on your home" (and after consulting with a lawyer and a variety of other painting professionals) I offered Shaun an additional $3,000 if he could commit to the job and finish it. He agreed to this and immediately we went from having one guy working at the house occasionally, to having a crew of guys working routinely. Just over two weeks later the job was done... sort of. Though the paint looked good, here's a list of some of the issues we had (you'll get the idea): - Paint on plantation shutters couldn't be fixed (these all needed to be replaced costing an additional ~$5,000) - Antique dining table was badly scratched (had items piled on it without protection/covering of any kind) - Living room console was scratched (again, items placed on it without anything down to protect the furniture) - Brand new teak kitchen table wasn't covered properly and was spattered with paint - Brand new washer/dryer were dented in several places when moved to paint baseboards - Alarm control pad wasn't covered when painting and paint got into the housing, this failed and needed to be replaced - Floors and quarter-round painted in MANY places - Kitchen and pantry cabinets badly hit with over spray - Window locks painted, then removed for repainting, then incorrectly re-installed (and one was lost) - Weather stripping on windows painted in many places (needed to be replaced for the whole house) - Chemicals used to strip paint were dumped on the front lawn, killing a large patch of the grass - Painters took a drop cloth from my basement workshop (not theirs), used it, left it out under the back deck where it became covered in mold. Shaun said he would replace this, but he did not. - Painters used Williams-Sonoma dish towels they found in our kitchen as paint rags. Shaun said he would replace these, but did not. - Painters helped themselves to our vacuum cleaners to clean up paint debris (actually walked in to find one using our steam cleaner as a vacuum to pick up paint dust). - Metal scrapers were used when stripping trim, damaging it (only because Shaun completely failed to oversee what his people were doing). - A bathroom light fixture was smashed. We had to discover this on our own while working on a punch list. Again, Shaun said he would replace this, but did not. I could go on for a bit here. The entire experience was terrible. Shaun is unreliable and his crew is extremely unprofessional. I did have several other painters in over the course of this (as many times I wanted to fire Shaun had have someone responsive take over), however, none these wanted to take over the mess Shaun had created (only one gave me a written estimate and that was for almost $25,000 NOT including the plantation shutters, which they and all the other painters we had in told us would be cheaper to replace). After many false starts Shaun did finally get things painted. However, before he'd completely addressed our punch-list (which ignored most of the damage listed above), he demanded final payment ($1,500 - half of the "extra" $3,000 I had to offer him to finish the job). When I told him I'd pay him once the punch list was completed... he checked out and disappeared, not returning my calls/texts. Note: it's been only about 3 1/2 months since Shaun walked away from our job. I already have cracking paint on my crown molding and chipping paint in a few other places. I am NOT happy with this painter's work, I would NOT recommend him, and I DEFINITELY NEVER use him again for ANYTHING!

A friend of mine recommended ATS Painting after he did a repaint on her house. He recommended a change in trim color and her house looked great. I contacted Shaun Phillips for a quote. Excellent job in all respects. Good prep work, paint application on main house and all the trim was excellent. This was a rental property with repaint using same colors. I now plan to ask ATS to look at my personal residence and I will be getting Shaun's recommendations on new paint colors. He is very knowledgeable about color selections. When providing a quote, he will break down the estimate by labor and different prices based on the quality of paint you select. I won't call his prices "cheap", but they are a "very good value" for the quality of work provided.

The job was completed on time and without any mistakes. Shaun Phillips and his wife Nicole were prompt in returning our phone calls to schedule the painting, they showed up when expected, and stayed until it was finished. The guys who did the painting were professional, courteous, and prompt.
Description of Work: ATS Painting did a wonderful job painting our dining room and family room. The dining room was a difficult job, since the walls had venetian plaster on them previously and ATS Painting had to do a lot of priming before even beginning to paint. ATS Painting was slightly more expensive than other quotes we received, but the quality was definitely worth it and they knew what they were doing. I would definitely hire them again for our painting needs, both interior and exterior.
